Gregory University has no separate cut-off mark for Optometry. Its minimum UTME score for all courses was 140 in both 2024/2025 and 2025/2026, but JAMB’s 2026 minimum for universities is 150, so 150 is the real floor for 2027/2028 candidates. I would aim for 180 or more.
2027/2028 update: Gregory University cut-off marks usually stay the same from one year to the next, so the figures on this page are what 2027/2028 candidates should plan with. They come from the latest notices available: Gregory’s 2024/2025 and 2025/2026 screening notices, read together with JAMB’s 2026 minimum for universities, because no 2026/2027 Gregory notice with a score could be found. If the 2027/2028 notice changes anything, we will update this page.
Optometry is on JAMB’s list for Gregory and the College of Allied Health Sciences names an Optometry department, but I could not confirm that NUC has accredited it, and I found no Optometrists and Dispensing Opticians Registration Board (ODORBN) record for Gregory or any report of Gregory optometry graduates being inducted. NUC’s results publication could not be read as far as Gregory. If you want a programme with a published status, ABSU Optometry, also in Uturu, is listed by NUC as fully accredited to 2027; ESUT Optometry is another option. If you still prefer Gregory, ask the university for its NUC letter for Optometry before you pay acceptance.
Gregory University cut-off mark for Optometry: the official figures
| Item | Position for 2027/2028 planning | Source |
|---|---|---|

Cut-off history at Gregory University
| Session | Figure | What it is | Status |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2024/2025 | 140 | Gregory minimum for screening, 2023 UTME | Official Gregory news page |
| 2025/2026 | 140 | Gregory minimum for screening, first choice | Reprint of Gregory notice (Myschool) |
| 2026/2027 | Not found | No Gregory notice with a score could be opened | Unconfirmed |
| 2026 (national) | 150 | JAMB minimum for all universities | Official |
The 140 figure is the floor for every course at Gregory, not a figure for one department. Because JAMB fixed 150 as the university minimum for 2026 admissions, I would not plan with 140 any more. Plan for at least 150, and read Gregory’s 2027/2028 notice the day it comes out.
Safe target score for Optometry at Gregory (my advice)
Gregory publishes no admitted scores. My bands are lower than for Nursing or Pharmacy at Gregory because demand for Optometry at this university looks smaller, but treat them as judgement, not data.
| Your UTME score | My read for this course at Gregory |
|---|---|
| Below 150 | Not eligible under JAMB’s 2026 rule |
| 150 to 164 | Eligible; borderline |
| 165 to 179 | Possible with good science credits |
| 180 to 209 | Competitive |
| 210 and above | Strong |
Before you settle on Optometry here, compare the Gregory programme with the ABSU one a few kilometres away. ABSU’s Optometry has a long record and a published NUC status; Gregory’s has neither in any source I could reach. If you choose Gregory, decide in advance which related course you would accept, such as Physiology or Anatomy.
Gregory Optometry subject combination and O’level requirements
JAMB’s brochure entry for Optometry, reprinted by Myschool, lists Physics, Chemistry and Biology for the UTME. The entry carries remarks for FUTO, UNILORIN and ABSU, but none for Gregory, so the general rules apply.
| UTME subject | Status |
|---|---|
| Use of English | Compulsory |
| Physics | Compulsory |
| Chemistry | Compulsory |
| Biology | Compulsory |
O’level rules
| Requirement | What applies at Gregory |
|---|---|
| Brochure rule | Five credits in English Language, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Biology |
| Gregory remark in the brochure | None (UNILORIN asks for one sitting; FUTO allows two) |
| Exams accepted | WAEC, NECO or NABTEB (Gregory notice) |
| Sittings | Up to two sittings in Gregory’s general notice |
Optometry leans on Physics more than most health courses because optics runs through the first three years. A weak Physics credit is a warning sign about the subject you will find hardest.
Direct Entry into Gregory Optometry
The brochure’s general Direct Entry line asks for A level passes in Physics, Chemistry and Biology or Zoology. The ABSU remark that accepts ND or HND in ophthalmic dispensing applies only to ABSU, and there is no Gregory remark. Gregory runs Direct Entry, JUPEB and IJMB admission, so ask its admissions office whether Optometry takes DE candidates and at what level before you pay for a form.
How Gregory University screening works for Optometry
Gregory runs one screening exercise for all its degree courses, and Optometry applicants go through the same portal as everyone else. The details below come from the university’s 2024/2025 news page and the 2025/2026 notice as reprinted by Myschool. I could not find the 2026/2027 notice itself, although news headlines show the university advertised 2026/2027 Post-UTME, Direct Entry, transfer, JUPEB and IJMB admission.
| Detail | What Gregory published |
|---|---|
| Who could apply (2025/2026) | Candidates who scored 140 or more with Gregory University as first choice |
| Where to register | gregoryuniversityuturu.edu.ng/postutme |
| Uploads | Passport photograph (PDF), UTME result slip, O’level result (WAEC, NECO or NABTEB) |
| O’level sittings | Up to two sittings allowed in the general notice |
| Fee | ₦2,000, non-refundable, paid online by ATM card (2025/2026) |
| Written test or interview | Not stated in any notice |
| Other entry routes | Direct Entry, inter-university transfer, JUPEB and IJMB (named in 2026/2027 headlines) |
| Phone lines on the 2024 notice | 0806 094 4681 and 0803 733 3920 |
No Gregory notice mentions a computer-based test, so do not pay anyone selling Gregory “past questions”. My working assumption is that the university ranks applicants on UTME score and O’level grades, then sends offers through JAMB CAPS. If a later notice adds a test or an interview, follow the notice.
Worked example: two Optometry applicants
Gregory has not published an aggregate formula, so this example only compares scores with JAMB’s 150 floor and my target. It is illustrative.
Adaeze scored 197 in the UTME. She has B3 in English, B3 in Mathematics, B2 in Physics, B3 in Chemistry and B2 in Biology from one NECO sitting.
- Eligibility: 197 minus 150 = 47. Clear of the national floor, and well clear of Gregory’s old 140.
- Against my target: 197 minus 180 = 17 above the score I call safe.
- O’level check: all five required credits are in place.
- What to do: register on the Gregory portal as soon as it opens and accept the CAPS offer quickly.
Kelechi scored 163. He has all five credits over two sittings, with C5 in Physics. He is eligible (163 minus 150 = 13) but 17 marks under my target. He should still register, and decide early whether he would take a related course if Gregory offers one through CAPS.
How to apply for Optometry at Gregory University, step by step
- Get your JAMB profile code: send NIN, a space and your 11-digit NIN to 55019 or 66019 from the phone line linked to your NIN.
- Register the UTME with Gregory as first choice: pick Optometry and write Use of English with Physics, Chemistry and Biology. The 2025/2026 notice addressed first-choice candidates, so if Gregory is not your first choice, do a JAMB change of institution before screening.
- Upload your O’level to CAPS: at a JAMB-accredited CBT centre. Awaiting result candidates must upload as soon as results are out, because CAPS will not treat you as qualified without them.
- Register on the Gregory portal: at gregoryuniversityuturu.edu.ng/postutme, fill the form and upload your passport (PDF), UTME result and O’level result.
- Pay the screening fee online: ₦2,000 in 2025/2026, by ATM card. Print the receipt and the completed form.
- Accept on CAPS: log in at efacility.jamb.gov.ng, open Check Admission Status and then Access my CAPS. Accept the offer before you pay anything to the school.
- Pay acceptance and clear: Gregory’s acceptance fee and tuition were not in any official source I reached. Pay only the amount on the invoice the university portal generates.
Warning
Gregory University’s website warns applicants to pay only through its official portals and says it has no admission agents. Real offers appear only on JAMB CAPS, so do not pay anyone who promises a Optometry “slot” or a place on a “departmental list”.
JAMB set 30 November 2026 as the 2026/2027 admission deadline for private universities, Gregory included, so anyone who applied this year should keep checking CAPS. Our JAMB CAPS guide explains every status you might see there.
Studying Optometry at Gregory University
Gregory is a private university at Amaokwe-Achara, Uturu, Abia State, licensed in 2012, according to the university. Optometry is one of six departments its College of Allied Health Sciences lists. A September 2026 Voice of Nigeria report on Gregory’s pharmacy accreditation says the university’s 2025/2026 accreditation exercise also covered Optometry, but it gave no result for it. The Sun’s April 2026 feature on Gregory’s health programmes did not mention Optometry at all.
What you study
Gregory’s Optometry curriculum was not online in any source I reached. A Nigerian Doctor of Optometry (OD) programme usually covers:
- First-year physics, chemistry, biology and mathematics, then anatomy, physiology and biochemistry
- Geometric, physical and visual optics
- Ocular anatomy and physiology
- Clinical optometry: refraction, contact lenses, low vision and binocular vision
- Ocular disease and ocular pharmacology
- Supervised clinics in the later years and a research project
Duration, accreditation and licensing
Nigerian optometry degrees lead to the OD and usually take six years; Gregory has not published its own duration or degree title. Gregory’s line in NUC’s accreditation results, 1990 to 2025 could not be read, and no NUC report page for this programme turned up, so its status is not confirmed. To practise, graduates register with ODORBN, and I found no ODORBN record for Gregory. These are the two documents to ask for at the admissions office.
Careers

Mistakes that cost Optometry applicants a Gregory place
- Assuming every listed course is accredited: a JAMB listing is not NUC accreditation.
- Writing Mathematics in place of Physics: the UTME combination is Physics, Chemistry and Biology.
- Relying on ABSU’s Direct Entry remark: it applies only to ABSU.
- Planning with 140: JAMB’s university floor for 2026 is 150.
- Forgetting to accept on CAPS: an unaccepted offer can be lost.
