ESUT Optometry Cut-Off Mark 2027/2028: Doctor of Optometry Requirements and Subject Combination

ESUT set 220 as the minimum UTME score for the Doctor of Optometry in 2027/2028, the first session it appears in the advert. See the official figure, a safe target score, subjects, O’level rules, screening and CAPS steps.

The ESUT cut off mark for Optometry for 2026/2027 is 220 in the UTME. Enugu State University of Science and Technology listed the Doctor of Optometry at 220 in its official 2026/2027 Post-UTME advert, posted on 4 July 2026 and signed by the Registrar, Ambrose G. Ugwu. That puts Optometry in the same tier as Pharmacy and Doctor of Physiotherapy, one step below Medicine and Nursing at 240.

2027/2028 update: ESUT cut-off marks usually stay the same from one year to the next, so the figures on this page are what 2027/2028 candidates should plan with. They come from the latest official notice (2026/2027). If the 2027/2028 notice changes anything, we will update this page.

A score of 220 let you register for ESUT’s screening for Optometry. ESUT does not publish the final merit score for the course, and as a professional health degree with limited clinical places, it admits above the minimum. This guide covers the official figure, what we know about Optometry at ESUT (it is new to the advert), a safe target score marked as my advice, subject and O’level rules, the screening process with a worked example, and the CAPS steps.

Optometry cut-off history at ESUT

SessionFigureStatus
2026/2027220 minimum UTME to applyOfficial ESUT advert
2025/2026Not listedOptometry does not appear in the reprint of ESUT’s 2025/2026 screening notice (DTW Tutorials, 30 July 2025)

There is no older ESUT figure for Optometry to compare with. The 2025/2026 cut-off groups, as reprinted, named Pharmacy alone at 220. For 2026/2027, ESUT added the Doctor of Optometry and the Doctor of Physiotherapy to that tier. As far as I could find, 2026/2027 is the first session in which the Doctor of Optometry appears in ESUT’s admission advert.

ESUT has not said when the programme was approved, and I could not find a report of its NUC approval or of any accreditation visit by the NUC or the Optometrists and Dispensing Opticians Registration Board of Nigeria (ODORBN). It is listed for 2026/2027 admission, so it is open to applicants. Its accreditation status is not confirmed, and that is worth asking ESUT about before you accept an offer.

Safe target score for Optometry at ESUT (my advice)

This is my reading, not an ESUT rule. Optometry draws candidates who also considered Medicine or Pharmacy, and the clinical training needs eye clinic places, so intakes tend to be small. A new programme can also be less crowded in its first years than one with a long reputation, which cuts the other way. Without an ESUT figure I would plan conservatively.

Your 2026 UTME scoreMy read for ESUT Optometry
Below 220Not eligible for Optometry at ESUT this session
220 to 234Eligible, but I would not rely on it
235 to 249Possible with strong O’level grades
250 to 269Competitive
270 and aboveStrong

For the 2027 UTME, I would aim for 250 or more, with A1 or B2 in English, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Biology.

How Optometry compares with ESUT’s other health courses

All of these take the same four UTME subjects (English, Physics, Chemistry, Biology in JAMB’s usual combinations), so one UTME result can keep several of them open to you. The minimums below are from ESUT’s 2026/2027 advert.

CourseESUT minimum UTME 2026/2027
Medicine and Surgery240
Nursing Sciences240
Pharmacy220
Doctor of Optometry220
Doctor of Physiotherapy220
Medical Laboratory Sciences200
Medical Radiography200
Anatomy180

If your score lands between 220 and 239, Optometry, Physiotherapy and Pharmacy are the highest-tier ESUT health courses you can apply for. Pick the one you would actually want to practise, because a CAPS Transfer Approval later will usually move you to a course lower on this table.

Catchment

ESUT does not publish a catchment list. It is owned by the Enugu State Government, so Enugu indigenes are its primary catchment, but it admits candidates from all states. It has not published any merit, catchment or ELDS split.

Physics matters more in Optometry than students expect. Optics, the physics of lenses and light, runs through the course, and JAMB’s usual combination for Optometry includes Physics in both the UTME and O’level lists. ESUT’s brochure remark for the course was not available to me, so check your e-Facility profile.

The advert also requires matching names across your O’level, UTME and other documents.

How ESUT screening works for Optometry

ESUT’s 2026/2027 screening was online only: no aptitude test and no physical screening. You registered, paid ₦2,000 and made sure your O’level results were on JAMB CAPS.

Worked example for an Optometry candidate

ESUT has not published an aggregate formula, and with no test this session there is no Post-UTME score to add. So the calculation that helps is your UTME score against the minimum and against a safe target.

Take Nnamdi, who scored 247 and has B2, B2, B3, B3 and C4 across English, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Biology, all in one sitting.

  1. Eligibility: 247 minus 220 = 27. He is 27 marks above ESUT’s Optometry minimum.
  2. Against my target: 250 minus 247 = 3. He is 3 marks short of the score I call competitive.
  3. O’level: five credits in the right subjects, one sitting, on CAPS.
  4. My advice: a realistic Optometry candidate. He should keep an eye on CAPS for a Transfer Approval to a related course in case Optometry fills up.

Ugochi scored 224. 224 minus 220 = 4. She was entitled to apply, but a place in Optometry would need a thin field of applicants.

You may see 50:50 or 60:40 formulas for ESUT online. Some Nigerian universities rank that way; ESUT has not published a formula, and there was no test score this session to plug in.

How to apply for Optometry at ESUT

  1. Profile code: send NIN plus a space and your 11-digit NIN to 55019 or 66019 from the phone number linked to your NIN.
  2. UTME registration: choose Optometry with English, Physics, Chemistry and Biology, and pick ESUT first. Candidates who did not choose ESUT need a JAMB change of institution before ESUT’s screening.
  3. O’level upload: put your result on CAPS through your JAMB profile or an accredited centre. ESUT makes this compulsory.
  4. ESUT screening form: visit portal.esut.edu.ng, select 2026/2027, and under Regular Students open “2026/2027 Admission Screening Registration”. Enter your JAMB registration number and fill the form to generate an invoice.
  5. Pay ₦2,000: at a commercial bank through Enugu State IGR Pay Direct, or online with a debit card.
  6. Submit: come back, re-enter your JAMB number, complete and confirm the form, then print your acknowledgement slip.
  7. CAPS: log in at efacility.jamb.gov.ng, choose Check Admission Status, then Access my CAPS and Admission Status. Accept within JAMB’s four-week window.
  8. Acceptance fee: ESUT has not published it in any source I reached. Blogs report about ₦26,000 (₦26,100 in some reports). Confirm on the ESUT portal before paying.

Before you accept

ESUT has not published the accreditation status of its Doctor of Optometry. If you are offered Optometry, ask the department or the ESUT admissions office whether the programme has NUC and ODORBN approval to train and graduate optometrists.

Myschool reported on 13 October 2026 that ESUT’s 2026/2027 provisional admission list was on JAMB CAPS. JAMB set 31 October 2026 for public universities to conclude admissions, so check CAPS now if you applied. Our JAMB CAPS guide explains each status.

Studying Optometry at ESUT

The Doctor of Optometry sits in the Faculty of Allied Health Sciences. ESUT’s main campus is at Agbani, and the medical and health programmes are linked to the College of Medicine and ESUT Teaching Hospital, Parklane, Enugu; ESUT has not said exactly where Optometry teaching takes place. In Nigeria the O.D. degree normally runs for six years, though ESUT has not published its own duration.

  • Early years: basic sciences and mathematics, then anatomy, physiology and biochemistry with a focus on the eye.
  • Optometry core: geometric and physiological optics, ocular anatomy and physiology, refraction, contact lenses, binocular vision, low vision and ocular disease.
  • Clinical training: supervised eye examinations and patient care in eye clinics.
  • Licensing: registration with the Optometrists and Dispensing Opticians Registration Board of Nigeria after graduation and internship.
  • Careers: hospital eye clinics, private optometry practice, public eye health programmes, the optical industry, teaching and research.

Mistakes Optometry applicants make at ESUT

  • Using old cut-off lists: many lists online do not include Optometry at ESUT at all, or give a general 160. The 2026/2027 minimum is 220.
  • Dropping Physics: it is in JAMB’s usual combination for Optometry.
  • No O’level on CAPS: ESUT requires every candidate to upload it.
  • Late awaiting results: results released after 30 September 2026 were not accepted.
  • Not asking about accreditation: with a new programme, ask before you pay acceptance and school fees.
  • Accepting on CAPS and stopping: ESUT’s acceptance fee and clearance are separate steps.
