The ESUT cut off mark for Computer Engineering for 2026/2027 is 160 in the 2026 UTME. Enugu State University of Science and Technology did not name Computer Engineering in the score bands of its Post-UTME advert of 4 July 2026, so it falls under the general 160 line for “other courses”. That surprises many candidates, because Computer Science was named at 200 in the same advert.
2027/2028 update: ESUT cut-off marks usually stay the same from one year to the next, so the figures on this page are what 2027/2028 candidates should plan with. They come from the latest official notice (2026/2027). If the 2027/2028 notice changes anything, we will update this page.
160 is only the score to apply, and it is not a sign that Computer Engineering is easy to get. ESUT does not publish the merit score that decides admission. This guide sets out the official figures, the cut-off history, a safe target (my advice), the JAMB subject combination and ESUT’s O’level remark, the online screening with a worked example, CAPS steps, COREN’s last report, and how the course differs from Computer Science and the new Software Engineering degree.
ESUT cut off mark for Computer Engineering 2027/2028 at a glance
| Item | 2026/2027 position | Status |
|---|---|---|
| JAMB national minimum for universities | 150 | Official (JAMB policy meeting, 11 May 2026) |
| ESUT minimum UTME for Computer Engineering | 160 | Official general minimum (course not named in the advert) |
| ESUT final admission (merit) score | Not published | ESUT does not release one |
| Post-UTME test | None | Online screening only |
| Screening fee | ₦2,000 | Official |
| Faculty | Faculty of Engineering | ESUT 2026/2027 advert |
| UTME subjects | Use of English, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry | JAMB brochure general entry |
| Admission list | On JAMB CAPS from 13 October 2026 | Myschool report |
The minimum UTME score (160) is the gate to screening. The merit score is the lowest UTME score ESUT actually admits into Computer Engineering after ranking applicants, and ESUT does not release it. Because the advert left the course in the general group, the gap between the gate and the real admission score is likely to be wide.
Computer Engineering cut-off history at ESUT
| Session | Figure | What it is | Status |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2026/2027 | 160 | Minimum UTME to apply (general line; course not named) | Official ESUT advert |
| 2025/2026 | 180 | Minimum UTME to apply (“Engineering” listed as a group) | Previous year, from a blog summary of ESUT’s notice |
The minimum dropped on paper from 180 to 160 because ESUT’s 2026/2027 advert named only Civil, Electrical/Electronic and Software Engineering. The 2025/2026 figure comes from a blog summary that listed “Engineering” as one group, which may have been a simplification. I found no ESUT document giving a separate departmental cut-off for Computer Engineering. Minimums change from year to year, so check the new advert each session.
Safe target score for Computer Engineering at ESUT (my advice)
This section is my advice, not an ESUT rule. Computer Engineering attracts the same candidates who apply for Computer Science and Electrical Engineering, and COREN’s 2018 visitors gave it the highest score of any ESUT engineering programme. Expect it to fill with candidates scoring well above 160.
| Your 2026 UTME score | My read for ESUT Computer Engineering |
|---|---|
| 160 to 189 | Eligible for screening. Admission is unlikely; list a backup. |
| 190 to 209 | Possible with strong O’level Mathematics and Physics. |
| 210 to 229 | A fair chance. |
| 230 and above | A good chance. This is the range I would aim for. |
For a 2027 attempt, my safe target for ESUT Computer Engineering is 230 or more, roughly where I would also set it for Computer Science. Mathematics and Physics decide most of your early results in this course, so give them most of your UTME preparation time.
Catchment and state of origin
ESUT does not publish a catchment list. It is an Enugu State Government university, so Enugu indigenes are its primary catchment, but it admits candidates from every state. The federal 45/35/20 split of merit, catchment and ELDS places has not been stated as ESUT policy, so do not plan around it.
JAMB subject combination and O’level requirements for ESUT Computer Engineering
| Requirement | Computer Engineering |
|---|---|
| UTME subjects | Use of English, Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry |
| O’level (general) | Five credits including English Language, Mathematics, Further Mathematics, Chemistry and Physics |
| ESUT O’level remark | ESUT requires credit passes in English Language and all other relevant subjects |
| Sittings | Not stated in ESUT’s advert. Two sittings is the common ceiling |
| Direct Entry (general) | Three A’level passes in Pure Mathematics (or Pure and Applied Mathematics), Chemistry and Physics |
| Direct Entry (ESUT remark) | None for this course. ESUT has not published its own DE grades |
| Special requirements | None published by ESUT |
These come from the JAMB brochure entry for Computer Engineering (Myschool reprint, checked 29 October 2026). The general O’level line lists Further Mathematics among the five credits, which is unusual. Many schools never offer Further Mathematics, and ESUT’s remark only says it wants credits in English and “all other relevant subjects” without explaining whether Further Mathematics is one of them.
My advice: if you have a Further Mathematics credit, you are safe either way. If you do not, check JAMB’s current e-brochure on IBASS before you register, and ask the Faculty of Engineering whether a fifth science credit such as Biology or Technical Drawing is accepted in its place.
How ESUT screening works for Computer Engineering
ESUT ran its 2026/2027 screening on these terms, taken from the official advert.
| Detail | ESUT 2026/2027 screening |
|---|---|
| Who could apply | Candidates who chose ESUT in the 2026 UTME, and candidates who did not choose ESUT but changed institution to ESUT through JAMB first |
| Score needed | The minimum UTME score ESUT set for the course (see the table above) |
| Direct Entry | Screened online too; former institutions must verify and clear DE candidates on JAMB e-facility |
| Registration window | Tuesday 7 July to Saturday 15 August 2026 (closed) |
| Fee | ₦2,000, paid at a bank through Enugu State IGR Pay Direct or online by debit card |
| Test | None. Screening is online only, with no physical screening and no aptitude test |
| Awaiting results | Allowed for May/June 2026 WAEC, NECO and NABTEB, but results released after 30 September 2026 are not accepted |
| O’level upload | Every candidate must upload O’level results on JAMB CAPS |
| Names | Must match on your O’level certificates, UTME result and other documents |
| Admission status | Published on the ESUT portal and JAMB CAPS |
Is there an aggregate score?
ESUT has not published an aggregate formula. The 2026/2027 advert sets a minimum UTME score per course and an online screening with no test, and it says nothing about weights or O’level grade points. So the only arithmetic you can do with official figures is to check how far you are above your course’s minimum. Some blogs quote a Post-UTME percentage for ESUT; that cannot be right for 2026/2027, because there was no Post-UTME test to score.
Worked example for a Computer Engineering candidate
Take Kosi, who scored 219 in the 2026 UTME and has A1 in Mathematics, B2 in Physics, B2 in Further Mathematics, B3 in Chemistry and C4 in English.
- Eligibility check (official): 219 minus the 160 minimum = 59 marks above the line.
- UTME half (illustrative method): 219 ÷ 8 = 27.38 out of 50.
- O’level half (illustrative method): 10 + 9 + 9 + 8 + 7 = 43 out of 50.
- Illustrative total: 27.38 + 43 = 70.38 out of 100.
Tobenna scored 236 with B3, C4, C4, C5 and C6, giving 29.5 + 31 = 60.5 on the same method. If ESUT ranks on UTME alone, Tobenna is ahead by 17 marks; on a combined method, Kosi leads by almost 10 points. ESUT has not said which it uses, so be strong in both.
To see why your O’level grades can still matter, here is a method some other Nigerian universities use: half the aggregate from the UTME (your score divided by 8, out of 50) and half from five O’level subjects (A1 = 10, B2 = 9, B3 = 8, C4 = 7, C5 = 6, C6 = 5, out of 50). ESUT has not published this or any other formula. I use it only to compare two candidates, never to predict an ESUT cut-off.
How to apply for Computer Engineering at ESUT, step by step
- Get your JAMB profile code: text NIN, a space and your 11-digit NIN (for example NIN 12345678901) to 55019 or 66019 from the phone number linked to your NIN. JAMB replies with the profile code you need to buy the UTME form.
- Register the UTME with the right subjects: pick Use of English, Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry and choose ESUT and Computer Engineering. ESUT’s 2026 advert also let candidates who chose another school apply after a JAMB change of institution, but choosing ESUT from the start saves you that step and its cost.
- Upload your O’level to CAPS: once your WAEC, NECO or NABTEB result is out, have it uploaded to your JAMB profile at an accredited CBT centre or JAMB office. ESUT’s advert makes this compulsory for every candidate, and a result that is missing on CAPS can hold your admission back even after ESUT picks you.
- Open the ESUT screening form: go to portal.esut.edu.ng, select the session, and under Regular Students open the Admission Screening Registration for that session (Direct Entry has its own form). Enter your JAMB registration number and fill the details form to generate an invoice.
- Pay ₦2,000: pay at a commercial bank through Enugu State IGR Pay Direct with the printed invoice and its reference number, or pay online with a debit card.
- Finish and print: return to the portal, re-enter your JAMB registration number, complete the form, confirm and submit, then print the acknowledgement slip. ESUT warns that false information leads to disqualification.
- Check and accept on CAPS: log in at efacility.jamb.gov.ng, choose Check Admission Status, then Access my CAPS and Admission Status. If ESUT has offered you Computer Engineering, accept it, then print your JAMB admission letter.
- Pay the acceptance fee on the ESUT portal: blogs report ESUT’s acceptance fee at about ₦26,000 (₦26,100 in some reports). ESUT’s 2026/2027 notices I checked do not state it, so confirm the amount on the portal before you pay, and keep the receipt for clearance.
Warning
Paying ESUT’s acceptance fee does not accept your JAMB offer. Accept the admission on JAMB CAPS first, because an offer left unaccepted on CAPS can be withdrawn, and ESUT cannot register you without it.
Myschool reported that ESUT’s 2026/2027 admission list went up on JAMB CAPS on 13 October 2026. JAMB gives four weeks to accept an offer and told public universities to finish admissions by 31 October 2026. If ESUT offers you a different engineering course from Computer Engineering, it shows on CAPS as a separate offer that you can accept or reject. Myschool also reported ESUT change of course and transfer forms for 2026/2027 on 28 October 2026; I have not seen their terms, so read the notice on the ESUT portal before you rely on a later switch.
If a CAPS status confuses you, our JAMB CAPS guide explains each one. Candidates who chose another school can read the JAMB change of institution guide, and if you plan to sit the UTME again, start with when JAMB 2027 registration starts.
Studying Computer Engineering at ESUT
Computer Engineering is one of ten programmes in ESUT’s Faculty of Engineering for 2026/2027 and leads to a five-year B.Eng., the NUC standard for engineering. ESUT’s main campus is at Agbani in Nkanu West, Enugu State. COREN’s 2018 visitors recommended that all engineering departments move to the main campus, and ESUT’s notices I checked do not say where each department sits now, so confirm at clearance.
What you study
- Foundations (years 1 and 2): engineering mathematics, physics, chemistry, engineering drawing, workshop practice and basic electrical engineering.
- Electronics: circuit theory, analogue and digital electronics, and electronic devices.
- Computer hardware: digital logic design, computer architecture, microprocessors and embedded systems.
- Software: programming, data structures, operating systems and software engineering.
- Systems and networks: data communication, computer networks, control systems and signal processing.
- Industrial training and project: SIWES placement and a final-year hardware or software project.
This is the usual shape of a Nigerian B.Eng. under the NUC engineering standards, not ESUT’s own course list. The department’s handbook gives the exact course codes after admission.
Accreditation: NUC and COREN
Two bodies matter for an engineering degree. The NUC accredits the programme as a university degree, and the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN) accredits it for professional registration as an engineer. The Enugu State Government reported in May 2025 that ESUT secured full NUC accreditation for programmes in its Faculty of Engineering, among others, after the 2024 exercise. That statement is at faculty level and names no programme.
COREN’s report of its February 2018 visit to ESUT lists undergraduate Computer Engineering with a score of 76%, the highest of the seven ESUT engineering programmes it visited, and a recommendation of full accreditation, matching its 2012 to 2017 status. The report says only the COREN Council gives the final verdict, and I found no newer COREN report on ESUT, so ask the department for the current status.
How Computer Engineering compares with other ESUT engineering courses
ESUT’s 2026/2027 advert lists ten engineering programmes. Only three are named in its minimum score bands; the rest fall under the general 160 line. The COREN column is from the 2018 visit report and is the latest programme-level record I found.
| ESUT engineering programme | 2026/2027 minimum UTME | COREN 2018 visit (undergraduate) |
|---|---|---|
| Agricultural and Bioresources Engineering | 160 (not named) | Full accreditation recommended (70%) |
| Biomedical Engineering | 160 (not named) | Not in the 2018 report (newer programme) |
| Chemical Engineering | 160 (not named) | Full accreditation recommended (71.5%) |
| Civil Engineering | 180 (named) | Full accreditation recommended (72.5%) |
| Computer Engineering (this page) | 160 (not named) | Full accreditation recommended (76%) |
| Electrical/Electronic Engineering | 180 (named) | Full accreditation recommended (71%) |
| Mechanical and Production Engineering | 160 (not named) | Full accreditation recommended for Mechanical Engineering (71.5%) |
| Mechatronics Engineering | 160 (not named) | Not in the 2018 report |
| Metallurgical and Materials Engineering | 160 (not named) | Full accreditation recommended (71%) |
| Software Engineering | 200 (named) | New for 2026/2027; NUC-approved, not yet accredited |
Computer Engineering sits between two other ESUT options. Computer Science (minimum 200, Faculty of Physical Sciences) is a four-year B.Sc. focused on software and theory. The new Software Engineering degree (minimum 200) is NUC-approved for 2026/2027 but not yet accredited. Computer Engineering is the one with hardware, electronics and a COREN track record, and Electrical/Electronic Engineering is its closest engineering neighbour.
Career paths after Computer Engineering
- Embedded systems and hardware design engineer.
- Network and telecommunications engineer.
- Software developer, especially for systems close to hardware.
- IT infrastructure, data centre and cybersecurity roles.
- Research and postgraduate study in electronics, robotics or computing.
Mistakes Computer Engineering applicants make
- Ignoring the Further Mathematics line: check it on JAMB’s current e-brochure and with ESUT before you rely on another credit.
- Reading 160 as an easy course: the low minimum reflects how the advert grouped courses, not how many people apply.
- Assuming the minimum guarantees a place: it only makes you eligible for screening.
- Mismatched names: ESUT requires the same name on your O’level, UTME result and other documents.
- Leaving O’level off CAPS: ESUT made the CAPS upload compulsory for every candidate.
- Paying acceptance before accepting on CAPS: the CAPS acceptance comes first.
ESUT cut off mark for Computer Engineering: frequently asked questions
What is the cut off mark for Computer Engineering in ESUT 2026? ESUT’s 2026/2027 advert did not name Computer Engineering, so the general minimum of 160 applies. The real admission score is higher and not published; I would aim for 230 or more.
Is Further Mathematics compulsory for Computer Engineering at ESUT? JAMB’s general entry lists Further Mathematics among the five O’level credits, and ESUT’s remark asks for credits in all relevant subjects. ESUT has not said whether it waives it, so confirm with the faculty if you lack it.
Is it easier to get Computer Engineering than Computer Science at ESUT? The minimum is lower (160 against 200), but ESUT does not publish either merit score. Both draw strong candidates, so plan for a similar score.
Does ESUT write post UTME for Computer Engineering? No. ESUT’s 2026/2027 screening was online only, with a ₦2,000 fee and no aptitude test or physical screening.
