ESUT Cut-Off Mark for Mechanical and Production Engineering 2027/2028: Aggregate Breakdown and Requirements

ESUT’s minimum UTME score for Mechanical and Production Engineering in 2027/2028 is 160; the 260 on blogs is unofficial. See an honest aggregate breakdown, the safe target, JAMB subjects, ESUT’s HND remark, screening and COREN status.

The ESUT cut off mark for Mechanical and Production Engineering for 2026/2027 is 160 in the 2026 UTME. Enugu State University of Science and Technology did not name the course in the score bands of its official Post-UTME advert of 4 July 2026, so the general 160 line for “other courses” applies. You may also see “260” quoted on blogs; that figure has no ESUT source behind it, and I explain below why you should not treat it as the cut-off.

2027/2028 update: ESUT cut-off marks usually stay the same from one year to the next, so the figures on this page are what 2027/2028 candidates should plan with. They come from the latest official notice (2026/2027). If the 2027/2028 notice changes anything, we will update this page.

160 makes you eligible for screening. The score that secures admission is higher and ESUT does not publish it, nor does it publish an aggregate formula. This guide covers the official numbers, the history, an aggregate breakdown done honestly, a safe target (my advice), the JAMB subjects and ESUT’s Direct Entry remark, the CAPS steps, COREN’s last report and the careers the degree leads to.

The minimum UTME score (160) is the gate to screening. The merit score is the lowest UTME score ESUT actually admits into Mechanical and Production Engineering after ranking applicants, and ESUT keeps it internal. Expect the merit score to sit well above 160 for a core engineering course.

Mechanical and Production Engineering cut-off history at ESUT

SessionFigureWhat it isStatus
2026/2027160Minimum UTME to apply (general line; course not named)Official ESUT advert
2025/2026180Minimum UTME to apply (“Engineering” listed as a group)Previous year, from a blog summary of ESUT’s notice
“2025” (as labelled)260Course figure in a Legit.ng listUnofficial; no ESUT document cited

The official minimum fell on paper from 180 to 160 because ESUT’s 2026/2027 advert named only Civil, Electrical/Electronic and Software Engineering. The 2025/2026 figure is from a blog summary that grouped all of Engineering, which may have been a simplification.

The 260 comes from a Legit.ng article updated in November 2025 that lists course figures “in 2025” (for example 314 for Medicine and 297 for Law). It cites no ESUT document, ESUT’s own advert for that year set Medicine’s minimum at 240, and the list does not say what the numbers measure. It may reflect the score of top admitted candidates, but I cannot confirm that, so I do not use it as a cut-off.

Safe target score for Mechanical and Production Engineering at ESUT (my advice)

This section is my advice, not an ESUT rule. Mechanical Engineering is a core engineering course with steady demand across manufacturing, oil and gas and power, and ESUT’s version adds production engineering on top. Candidates who miss Electrical or Computer Engineering elsewhere often list it as a second choice, which pushes the real admission score up.

Your 2026 UTME scoreMy read for ESUT Mechanical and Production Engineering
160 to 189Eligible for screening. Admission is unlikely; list a backup.
190 to 209Possible with strong O’level Mathematics and Physics.
210 to 229A fair chance.
230 and aboveA good chance. This is the range I would aim for.

For a 2027 attempt, my safe target for ESUT Mechanical and Production Engineering is 225 or more, with at least B grades in Mathematics and Physics. If the 260 figure ever turns out to reflect real admitted scores, that target will need to rise, which is one more reason to aim as high as you can.

Catchment and state of origin

ESUT does not publish a catchment list. It is an Enugu State Government university, so Enugu indigenes are its primary catchment, but it admits candidates from every state. The federal 45/35/20 split of merit, catchment and ELDS places has not been stated as ESUT policy, so do not plan around it.

JAMB subject combination and O’level requirements for ESUT Mechanical and Production Engineering

RequirementMechanical and Production Engineering
UTME subjectsUse of English, Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry
O’levelFive credits including English Language, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and any other science subject
ESUT O’level remarkNone for this course
SittingsNot stated in ESUT’s advert. Two sittings is the common ceiling
Direct Entry (general)A’level passes in any two of Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry
Direct Entry (ESUT remark)ESUT accepts a first degree or HND upper credit in relevant programmes into 300 level
Special requirementsNone published by ESUT

These come from the JAMB brochure entry for Mechanical and Production Engineering (Myschool reprint, checked 29 October 2026); the separate Mechanical Engineering entry lists the same UTME subjects and O’level credits. The ESUT remark matters for HND holders: an upper credit HND in a relevant field can take you straight to 300 level through Direct Entry.

Technical Drawing is a useful fifth O’level subject for this course, because engineering drawing is taught from year one, but it cannot replace Physics, Chemistry or Mathematics.

How ESUT screening works for Mechanical and Production Engineering

ESUT ran its 2026/2027 screening on these terms, taken from the official advert.

Is there an aggregate score?

ESUT has not published an aggregate formula. The 2026/2027 advert sets a minimum UTME score per course and an online screening with no test, and it says nothing about weights or O’level grade points. So the only arithmetic you can do with official figures is to check how far you are above your course’s minimum. Some blogs quote a Post-UTME percentage for ESUT; that cannot be right for 2026/2027, because there was no Post-UTME test to score.

Worked example for a Mechanical and Production Engineering candidate

Take Uche, who scored 224 in the 2026 UTME and has A1 in Mathematics, B2 in Physics, B3 in Chemistry, B3 in Technical Drawing and C4 in English.

  1. Eligibility check (official): 224 minus the 160 minimum = 64 marks above the line.
  2. UTME half (illustrative method): 224 ÷ 8 = 28 out of 50.
  3. O’level half (illustrative method): 10 + 9 + 8 + 8 + 7 = 42 out of 50.
  4. Illustrative total: 28 + 42 = 70 out of 100.

Adaeze scored 241 with B3, C4, C4, C5 and C6, giving 30.13 + 31 = 61.13. On UTME alone she is ahead by 17 marks; on a combined method Uche leads by almost 9 points. ESUT has not published which approach it uses, so the only safe plan is to be strong on both.

To see why your O’level grades can still matter, here is a method some other Nigerian universities use: half the aggregate from the UTME (your score divided by 8, out of 50) and half from five O’level subjects (A1 = 10, B2 = 9, B3 = 8, C4 = 7, C5 = 6, C6 = 5, out of 50). ESUT has not published this or any other formula. I use it only to compare two candidates, never to predict an ESUT cut-off.

How to apply for Mechanical and Production Engineering at ESUT, step by step

  1. Get your JAMB profile code: text NIN, a space and your 11-digit NIN (for example NIN 12345678901) to 55019 or 66019 from the phone number linked to your NIN. JAMB replies with the profile code you need to buy the UTME form.
  2. Register the UTME with the right subjects: pick Use of English, Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry and choose ESUT and Mechanical and Production Engineering. ESUT’s 2026 advert also let candidates who chose another school apply after a JAMB change of institution, but choosing ESUT from the start saves you that step and its cost.
  3. Upload your O’level to CAPS: once your WAEC, NECO or NABTEB result is out, have it uploaded to your JAMB profile at an accredited CBT centre or JAMB office. ESUT’s advert makes this compulsory for every candidate, and a result that is missing on CAPS can hold your admission back even after ESUT picks you.
  4. Open the ESUT screening form: go to portal.esut.edu.ng, select the session, and under Regular Students open the Admission Screening Registration for that session (Direct Entry has its own form). Enter your JAMB registration number and fill the details form to generate an invoice.
  5. Pay ₦2,000: pay at a commercial bank through Enugu State IGR Pay Direct with the printed invoice and its reference number, or pay online with a debit card.
  6. Finish and print: return to the portal, re-enter your JAMB registration number, complete the form, confirm and submit, then print the acknowledgement slip. ESUT warns that false information leads to disqualification.
  7. Check and accept on CAPS: log in at efacility.jamb.gov.ng, choose Check Admission Status, then Access my CAPS and Admission Status. If ESUT has offered you Mechanical and Production Engineering, accept it, then print your JAMB admission letter.
  8. Pay the acceptance fee on the ESUT portal: blogs report ESUT’s acceptance fee at about ₦26,000 (₦26,100 in some reports). ESUT’s 2026/2027 notices I checked do not state it, so confirm the amount on the portal before you pay, and keep the receipt for clearance.

Warning

Paying ESUT’s acceptance fee does not accept your JAMB offer. Accept the admission on JAMB CAPS first, because an offer left unaccepted on CAPS can be withdrawn, and ESUT cannot register you without it.

Myschool reported that ESUT’s 2026/2027 admission list went up on JAMB CAPS on 13 October 2026. JAMB gives four weeks to accept an offer and told public universities to finish admissions by 31 October 2026. If ESUT offers you a different engineering course from Mechanical and Production Engineering, it shows on CAPS as a separate offer that you can accept or reject. Myschool also reported ESUT change of course and transfer forms for 2026/2027 on 28 October 2026; I have not seen their terms, so read the notice on the ESUT portal before you rely on a later switch.

If a CAPS status confuses you, our JAMB CAPS guide explains each one. Candidates who chose another school can read the JAMB change of institution guide, and if you plan to sit the UTME again, start with when JAMB 2027 registration starts.

Studying Mechanical and Production Engineering at ESUT

Mechanical and Production Engineering is one of ten programmes in ESUT’s Faculty of Engineering for 2026/2027 and leads to a five-year B.Eng., the NUC standard for engineering. The “production” part adds manufacturing and industrial engineering to the usual mechanical core. ESUT’s main campus is at Agbani in Nkanu West, Enugu State. COREN’s 2018 visitors recommended that all engineering departments move to the main campus, and ESUT’s notices I checked do not say where each department sits now, so confirm at clearance.

What you study

  • Foundations (years 1 and 2): engineering mathematics, physics, chemistry, engineering drawing, workshop practice and applied mechanics.
  • Mechanics and design: strength of materials, mechanics of machines, machine design and engineering materials.
  • Thermofluids: thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, heat transfer, internal combustion engines and refrigeration.
  • Production: manufacturing processes, metrology, production planning and control, industrial engineering and operations research.
  • Control and automation: control systems and instrumentation.
  • Industrial training and project: SIWES placement and a final-year design or research project.

This is the usual shape of a Nigerian B.Eng. under the NUC engineering standards, not ESUT’s own course list. The department’s handbook gives the exact course codes after admission.

Accreditation: NUC and COREN

Two bodies matter for an engineering degree. The NUC accredits the programme as a university degree, and the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN) accredits it for professional registration as an engineer. The Enugu State Government reported in May 2025 that ESUT secured full NUC accreditation for programmes in its Faculty of Engineering, among others, after the 2024 exercise. That statement is at faculty level and names no programme.

COREN’s report of its February 2018 visit to ESUT lists undergraduate Mechanical Engineering with a score of 71.5% and a recommendation of full accreditation, matching its 2012 to 2017 status; the postgraduate diploma got an interim recommendation (64.5%). The report uses the name Mechanical Engineering, not Mechanical and Production, says only the COREN Council gives the final verdict, and is the latest COREN report on ESUT I found. Ask the department for the current status.

How Mechanical and Production Engineering compares with other ESUT engineering courses

ESUT’s 2026/2027 advert lists ten engineering programmes. Only three are named in its minimum score bands; the rest fall under the general 160 line. The COREN column is from the 2018 visit report and is the latest programme-level record I found.

Career paths after Mechanical and Production Engineering

  • Maintenance and plant engineer in manufacturing, cement, breweries and oil and gas.
  • Production, quality and operations roles in factories.
  • Automotive, HVAC and energy systems engineering.
  • Design engineer using CAD tools.
  • Teaching, research and postgraduate study in manufacturing or energy.

Mistakes Mechanical and Production Engineering applicants make

  • Treating 260 as the cut-off: it is an unsourced blog figure, not an ESUT number.
  • Trusting a Post-UTME percentage: some blogs quote one for ESUT, but there was no Post-UTME test in 2026/2027.
  • Assuming the minimum guarantees a place: it only makes you eligible for screening.
  • Mismatched names: ESUT requires the same name on your O’level, UTME result and other documents.
  • Leaving O’level off CAPS: ESUT made the CAPS upload compulsory for every candidate.
  • Paying acceptance before accepting on CAPS: the CAPS acceptance comes first.
