SUMAS Industrial Physics Cut-Off Mark 2027/2028: Admission Requirements and Departmental Cut-Off

Industrial Physics at SUMAS needs 150 in the UTME for 2027/2028; no departmental cut off has been published. It is not yet NUC-accredited (due 2026) and was on the October 2026 supplementary list. Requirements, JAMB subjects and careers.

The SUMAS cut off mark for Industrial Physics in 2026/2027 is 150 in the UTME. That is the general minimum the State University of Medical and Applied Sciences (SUMAS), Igbo-Eno, Enugu State, set for all programmes in its 2026/2027 Post-UTME and Direct Entry notice, and it was also 150 in 2025/2026. The course appeared as “Pure and Industrial Physics” on the SUMAS supplementary admission list in October 2026, which was open to candidates with 150 or more in the 2026 UTME.

2027/2028 update: SUMAS cut-off marks usually stay the same from one year to the next, so the figures on this page are what 2027/2028 candidates should plan with. They come from the latest official notice (2026/2027). If the 2027/2028 notice changes anything, we will update this page.

There is no departmental cut off for Industrial Physics at SUMAS: the university has not published one for any year, and it has released no aggregate formula, merit list scores, catchment list or ELDS list. You should also know that Industrial Physics is not yet NUC-accredited. It runs with NUC approval and is among the SUMAS programmes due for accreditation in 2026. Below are the verified figures, the JAMB subject combination, O’level rules, a worked screening example, my safe score advice and the career options.

The 150 gets you into screening. A departmental cut off would be the lowest score SUMAS admitted into Industrial Physics after screening, and SUMAS has never released it. Its batch lists show masked JAMB numbers by course without scores. Any page that gives an official SUMAS departmental cut off for Industrial Physics is guessing. A private directory quotes 160 for SUMAS and calls it federal; that is not a SUMAS figure, and SUMAS is owned by Enugu State. The 150 itself is reviewed after each JAMB policy meeting, so check the 2027/2028 notice.

Industrial Physics or Pure and Industrial Physics?

The SUMAS 2026/2027 Post-UTME programme list names the course Industrial Physics. The supplementary list, as reported by Myschool and FreshNote, calls it Pure and Industrial Physics. SUMAS runs one physics degree, so both names point to the same programme. On JAMB, select the name SUMAS shows in the course list for its institution code, and use exactly the same name on the SUMAS portal.

Industrial Physics on the 2027/2028 supplementary list

On 17 October 2026, Myschool and FreshNote reported that SUMAS had opened supplementary admission for courses with places left after the main batches. I could not find the notice on sumas.edu.ng, so read these details as reported.

  • Score: 150 or more in the 2026 UTME.
  • Who could apply: candidates who chose SUMAS first but missed their course, and candidates willing to make SUMAS their first choice.
  • Physics-based courses also listed: the six Engineering degrees (Biomedical, Chemical, Civil, Computer, Electrical and Electronics, Mechanical), ICT, Industrial Chemistry and Architecture.
  • Not listed: Computer Science, Quantity Surveying and the main health courses.
  • Portal: register on samp.sumas.edu.ng if you never did SUMAS Post-UTME; if you already applied, use your existing account.

Many Industrial Physics applicants first wanted Engineering or Computer Science. Engineering was reopened; Computer Science was not.

Supplementary deadline

SUMAS has published no closing date for the supplementary round, and JAMB told public universities to finish 2026 admissions by 31 October 2026. If you want Industrial Physics this session, make your JAMB change and call SUMAS admissions (08067390088) now.

Is Industrial Physics at SUMAS accredited?

Not yet. SUMAS announced that the NUC fully accredited 15 programmes after the exercise held from 28 October to 3 December 2025, and called those “all the fifteen academic programmes due for accreditation”. Industrial Physics was not among them. SUMAS said its other programmes are due for accreditation in 2026, awaiting NUC scheduling.

This is normal for a young programme. The NUC usually accredits a course when it is close to producing its first graduates, so “not yet accredited” here means the programme is approved and running but has not reached that stage. The NUC has not assessed it and found it wanting. Ask about the accreditation visit when you get to SUMAS, and check our post again after the 2026 NUC exercise.

UTME subject combination and O’level requirements

JAMB’s general entry for Industrial Physics, as reproduced by Myschool, asks for Use of English, Physics, Mathematics, and Chemistry or Biology. SUMAS is not named in the brochure’s remarks (EBSU, GOUNI, ESUT and a few others are), so the general rule should apply. Confirm on the JAMB e-brochure when you register.

RequirementIndustrial Physics at SUMAS
UTME subjectsUse of English, Physics, Mathematics, and Chemistry or Biology
O’level (JAMB brochure)Five credits in English Language, Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics and one other science (Further Mathematics, Biology or Agricultural Science)
O’level (SUMAS rule)Five credits including English Language, Mathematics and Physics, plus two relevant subjects
SittingsNot more than two
UTME score150 or more in the 2026 UTME
AgeAt least 16 by 30 September 2026
ChoiceSUMAS first on JAMB CAPS
Direct Entry (SUMAS rule)At least second class lower or its equivalent in OND, HND or a first degree, cleared on JAMB e-Facility
Direct Entry (JAMB brochure)Two A level passes in Physics and Mathematics

Two tips:

  • Write Chemistry as your fourth UTME subject. Biology is allowed for Industrial Physics, but Chemistry keeps you eligible for the Engineering degrees and Industrial Chemistry too, which helps if SUMAS offers you a change of course.
  • Get a Chemistry credit at O’level. JAMB’s entry lists it among the five subjects, alongside English, Physics and Mathematics.

How SUMAS screens Industrial Physics applicants

SUMAS called its 2026/2027 Post-UTME a screening exercise, published no written test, and has not said how it ranks candidates. A later notice asked some admitted candidates who skipped Post-UTME to register on SAMP, pay the screening fee and report to the ICT Unit for verification, which suggests screening on records. SUMAS has not confirmed this.

Before ranking, these will knock you out: a score below 150, SUMAS not as first choice, O’level results missing from CAPS (the 2026 SUMAS deadline was 15 August), a third sitting, or details that differ between JAMB and the SUMAS portal.

Worked aggregate example

The 50/50 aggregate used by many Nigerian universities is shown here for illustration only, because SUMAS has not published its formula.

  1. UTME part: UTME score ÷ 8, maximum 50 points.
  2. O’level part: five relevant grades scored A1 = 10, B2 = 9, B3 = 8, C4 = 7, C5 = 6, C6 = 5, maximum 50 points.
  3. Aggregate: the sum, out of 100.

Emeka scored 176 in the UTME (English, Physics, Mathematics, Chemistry). Over two sittings, his grades are C5 in English Language, B2 in Mathematics, B3 in Physics, C4 in Chemistry and B3 in Further Mathematics.

PartWorkingPoints
UTME176 ÷ 822
O’level6 + 9 + 8 + 7 + 838
Aggregate22 + 3860 out of 100

Under a method like this, Emeka’s strong Mathematics and Further Mathematics grades make up for a modest UTME score. Each grade step is worth the same as 8 UTME marks.

Admission odds and the score to aim for

Industrial Physics is one of the less crowded courses at SUMAS. It was reopened in the October 2026 supplementary round, which shows places remained after the main screening. SUMAS has not published a quota, catchment states or ELDS states, and the 45% merit, 35% catchment and 20% ELDS split quoted online is a federal university guideline that SUMAS has not said it follows.

My advice, not an official figure: a UTME score of 170 or more, with credits in English, Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry at no more than two sittings, gives you a comfortable chance. Candidates between 150 and 170 can still be considered, particularly in the supplementary round.

What you study in Industrial Physics

Industrial Physics applies physics to industry, energy, electronics and instrumentation. SUMAS has not published its course outline, so this list reflects what Nigerian Industrial Physics programmes normally cover:

  • Mechanics, waves, optics and thermodynamics
  • Electricity, magnetism and electronics
  • Mathematical methods and computational physics
  • Instrumentation, measurement and control
  • Solid state and materials physics
  • Renewable energy and solar technology
  • Medical and radiation physics, geophysics (as electives)
  • Workshop practice, SIWES and a final year project

Industrial Physics is in the Faculty of Natural and Applied Sciences on the Igbo-Eno campus in Udenu Local Government Area, Enugu State. Plan for four years as a UTME entrant, the usual length for this B.Sc. in Nigeria; SUMAS has not published its own duration. The only SUMAS fee schedule online is for 2022/2023, which charged Applied and Natural Sciences students ₦251,400. Treat that as a guide and add the ₦50,000 acceptance fee.

Careers after Industrial Physics

  • Energy: solar and renewable energy firms, power companies and energy research.
  • Electronics and instrumentation: equipment maintenance, calibration and control systems in factories and oil and gas.
  • Telecoms and ICT: network and hardware roles, often with extra certification.
  • Health: medical physics and radiation safety, usually after postgraduate training.
  • Teaching and research: secondary school teaching (with a teaching qualification), or an M.Sc. and Ph.D. for university and research work.

Both are awaiting their first NUC accreditation. Engineering leads to COREN registration and design work; Industrial Physics is broader and suits candidates who enjoy theory, instrumentation and energy. If you are torn, write English, Physics, Mathematics and Chemistry so you qualify for both.

Mistakes to avoid when applying for Industrial Physics

  • Choosing a name SUMAS does not show on JAMB: use the exact course name on SUMAS’s JAMB list.
  • Writing Biology when you also want Engineering: Chemistry keeps more doors open.
  • A third sitting: SUMAS accepts no more than two.
  • Two SUMAS applications: only one is allowed.
  • Paying agents: SUMAS takes payments only through its own portals.
