UNN Cut-Off Mark for Educational Foundations and Guidance and Counselling 2027/2028: Admission Guide

UNN needs 160 in the UTME to screen for 2027/2028 and has published no departmental cut-off for Educational Foundations. See what the department offers, how to get into Guidance and Counselling, O’level rules and the score to aim for.

The UNN cut off mark for Guidance and Counselling and the other Educational Foundations programmes for 2026/2027 is 160 in the UTME, the score the University of Nigeria, Nsukka asked for in its screening notice of 13 July 2026 for candidates who chose UNN first. UNN has not published a departmental merit or catchment cut-off for Educational Foundations for 2026/2027 or 2025/2026, so any “official departmental” figure you see on a blog did not come from the university.

2027/2028 update: UNN cut-off marks usually stay the same from one year to the next, so the figures on this page are what 2027/2028 candidates should plan with. They come from the latest official notice (2026/2027). If the 2027/2028 notice changes anything, we will update this page.

You will also see 200 quoted. That is the minimum UNN declared at the JAMB 2026 policy meeting on 11 May 2026, as reported by Vanguard. In practice, UNN accepted screening forms from 160, its declared benchmark was 200, and the score that actually wins a place depends on how many people apply for your course and state. This guide sorts out what UNN’s Department of Educational Foundations offers at undergraduate level (Early Childhood Education, Primary Education and Guidance and Counselling), how you get into each, the 2026/2027 screening, an aggregate example and the score I would aim for.

One education blog groups every UNN Education course together at about 160 to 200 for “2025/2026”. It calls its figures estimates based on trends and does not say whether they are UTME scores or aggregates, so read it as an unofficial estimate and nothing more.

What does UNN Educational Foundations offer?

In Nigerian universities, Educational Foundations is usually the department behind the core education courses that every education student takes: philosophy, sociology and history of education, educational psychology, measurement and evaluation, and educational administration. At undergraduate level it also runs its own degrees. Its programmes page lists:

ProgrammeEntry routesWhat the department says
B.Ed. Early Childhood EducationFour years (UTME), three years (Direct Entry)The page’s main programme; covers crèche, nursery and kindergarten education
Primary EducationFour-year and three-year course tables are publishedEntry rules are not stated on the page
B.Ed. Guidance and CounsellingMainly Direct Entry for NCE holders on UNN’s older page; also combined with a teaching subject (see below)The department’s history calls it the only B.Ed. option still running in 2015

Two other names often show up in guides. Educational Administration and Planning, and Measurement and Evaluation, appear as courses inside the department, not as separate first degrees. The old B.Ed. in Principles and Methods has been phased out. Separately, news reports in September 2026 listed Educational Management among 12 new programmes UNN got NUC approval for from 2026/2027; the reports do not say which department will run it, so check UNN’s admission brochure before you choose it.

UNN cut off mark for Guidance and Counselling: how to get in

This is where most applicants get confused. UNN’s older departmental page described the B.Ed. in Guidance and Counselling as a two or three-year programme for NCE holders with distinction, credit or merit, which is a Direct Entry route. The JAMB brochure reprint carries UNN remarks that add a UTME route: Guidance and Counselling combined with a teaching subject, as a four-year degree.

RouteWhat applies
UTME, combined with a science teaching subjectSame UTME and O’level rules as the Education/Science combination (see our UNN Science Education guide)
UTME, combined with an arts teaching subjectSame rules as the Education/Arts combination (see our UNN Education Arts guide)
Direct Entry (professional, three years)NCE at distinction, credit or merit; UNN also accepts TC I and ACE, according to the brochure remarks

The brochure does not list UNN among its school options for Guidance and Counselling (UNN appears only in the remarks), and the full list of qualifications UNN accepts for the three-year route is cut off in the reprint. Before you register, open the course list for UNN on your JAMB profile and confirm that the exact Guidance and Counselling option you want is there for the 2027 UTME. If it is not, the Early Childhood Education route or an Education/Arts or Education/Science option is the safer way into this department’s field.

UTME subjects and O’level for Early Childhood and Primary Education

The department’s page gives the O’level rule for Early Childhood Education: UNN’s general requirements plus credits in five teaching subjects, including English Language and Mathematics, at not more than two sittings of SSCE, WASSCE, GCE or NECO. It does not list UTME subjects.

JAMB’s usual combination for Early Childhood and Primary Education is Use of English plus any three subjects, ideally ones you also passed at credit level in O’level. I could not open JAMB’s IBASS brochure from here, so confirm on your JAMB profile. A sensible set for an Arts student is Literature in English, CRS or IRS and Government; a science student can use Biology, Chemistry and Mathematics.

Direct Entry into Early Childhood Education

The department accepts an NCE with at least a merit pass, or a diploma in Education Music, Religion, Adult Education, Health or Physical Education, for the three-year programme. Register through JAMB Direct Entry and choose UNN first.

UNN screening for 2027/2028: what Educational Foundations candidates had to do

UNN did not run a written post-UTME test for 2026/2027. The Registrar’s notice of 13 July 2026 described an online screening registration only, with no test date and no exam format. If a website is selling you “UNN post-UTME past questions for 2026/2027” as preparation for Educational Foundations, know that the official notice did not mention any paper.

The portal route was unn.edu.ng, then UNN Portal at the top right (unnportal.unn.edu.ng), then Prospective Students and the 2026/2027 screening form. You entered your JAMB registration number, generated and paid the invoice, came back to fill personal and O’level details (including centre and exam numbers), uploaded your documents, reviewed, submitted and printed the acknowledgement slip. The notice warned that date of birth cannot be changed after submission.

The window is closed. If you did not register by 5 August 2026, UNN cannot consider you for 2026/2027, whatever your score.

How UNN ranks Educational Foundations candidates (aggregate example)

UNN has not published its aggregate formula. Neither the 2026/2027 screening notice nor the 2025/2026 advert notice gives weights or grade points. The 2025/2026 advert notice did refer to a separate screening score with a 160 threshold, but it did not say how that score is worked out.

Several Nigerian education blogs describe the same method, and it is the one you will see most often: 60% of your UTME score plus 40% of an O’level score built from four relevant subjects, where A1 = 100, B2 = 90, B3 = 80, C4 = 70, C5 = 60 and C6 = 50. Treat the example below as an illustration of that blog method. It is not an official UNN formula.

StepWorking
UTME score185
O’level: English LanguageB3 = 80
O’level: MathematicsC5 = 60
O’level: BiologyC4 = 70
O’level: CRSB2 = 90
O’level total (out of 400)300
60% of UTME185 × 0.6 = 111
40% of O’level300 × 0.4 = 120
Aggregate (out of 400)111 + 120 = 231

That Early Childhood Education candidate scores 231 out of 400 on the blog method. Lifting Mathematics from C5 to B3 adds 8 aggregate points, which is about 13 UTME marks. UNN has not confirmed its formula or which subjects it counts, so use this only to compare your own results.

Merit, catchment and ELDS for Educational Foundations at UNN

UNN is a federal university, so it works under the federal admission guideline that is widely reported as 45% merit, 35% catchment and 20% educationally less developed states (ELDS). UNN has not published its own split for any course, so read that as the national policy rather than a UNN figure.

  • Merit: the top scorers in the course, from any state, fill this list first. It is where the highest cut-off sits.
  • Catchment: UNN has not published its catchment list. It is generally understood to be the South-East states; confirm on JAMB CAPS or with the UNN admissions office before you count on it.
  • ELDS: this is a federal designation. UNN does not publish its own ELDS list, and I would not rely on any blog that names states “for UNN”.
  • State of origin: the state on your JAMB profile is what counts, and UNN asks for an LGA identification letter as proof during screening.

These programmes attract fewer applicants than UNN’s flagship courses, which gives South-East candidates on the catchment list a reasonable chance near the lower end of the score range. UNN has not said how many places each programme had for 2026/2027.

What score should you aim for in Educational Foundations at UNN?

My advice (not a UNN figure): aim for 190 or more in the UTME, and 200 or more to clear UNN’s declared benchmark. If you hold an NCE with merit, Direct Entry is often the easier route into Guidance and Counselling.

Your UTME scoreMy reading for Educational Foundations at UNN
Below 160Not eligible for UNN screening
160 to 179Possible, mainly on catchment; keep a backup
180 to 199Reasonable chance with good credits

Warning

JAMB’s 2026 policy gives candidates four weeks to accept an admission offer on CAPS. An offer left unaccepted after that can be withdrawn and given to someone else, so check CAPS every few days once UNN starts releasing lists.

  1. Get or recover your JAMB profile code: text NIN, a space and your 11-digit NIN (for example, NIN 12345678901) to 55019 or 66019 from the phone number linked to your NIN. JAMB replies with your profile code, which you need for registration and other JAMB services.
  2. Make UNN your first choice: UNN screens only candidates who chose it first. If you are planning for 2027, pick UNN and Educational Foundations at registration so you do not pay for a change of institution later.
  3. Upload your O’level to CAPS: your WAEC, NECO or NABTEB result has to show on your JAMB profile. For 2026/2027 UNN asked for the upload to CAPS and the UNN portal by 5 August 2026. A JAMB-accredited CBT centre can do the CAPS upload for you.
  4. Register for UNN screening: when the next notice comes out, fill the form on unnportal.unn.edu.ng, pay through Remita and print your acknowledgement slip.
  5. Check CAPS: log in at efacility.jamb.gov.ng, click Check Admission Status, then Access My CAPS and Admission Status. On a phone, switch your browser to desktop view first.
  6. Accept or reject: read the course name carefully, then click Accept. If you see a Transfer Approval, UNN is offering you a different course, and you must respond to that before anything else.
  7. Print your JAMB admission letter and pay acceptance: after CAPS, pay UNN’s acceptance fee on the UNN portal. Blogs report it as ₦25,000, but I found no official 2026/2027 figure, so confirm the amount on the portal before you pay.
  8. Clearance: follow your faculty’s clearance instructions with your original documents. Nobody can “secure” a place for you on CAPS for money.

UNN’s homepage already carries 2026/2027 notices for its primary admission list, its Direct Entry list and lists for candidates with disabilities and foreign candidates, and Myschool reported on 25 October 2026 that the list is checkable on CAPS. JAMB also told public universities to conclude 2026 admissions by 31 October 2026. Our JAMB CAPS guide explains every status message you may see.

Careers

For Early Childhood Education the department lists teaching in or setting up crèches, nurseries and kindergartens, lecturing in colleges of education and universities after a higher degree, and desk officer roles with ministries of education, State Universal Basic Education Boards, UNICEF and child-focused NGOs. UNN’s older page on Guidance and Counselling mentions teaching with state and federal ministries of education and work as a guidance counsellor in schools, social welfare institutions and prisons.

  • School guidance counsellor in secondary schools.
  • Nursery and primary school teacher or proprietor.
  • Officer with SUBEB, a ministry of education or an education NGO.
  • Counselling roles in social welfare and correctional services.
  • Postgraduate study in guidance and counselling, educational psychology or early childhood education.

Related UNN courses: UNN Adult Education, UNN Psychology, UNN Education Arts and UNN Social Work.

Common mistakes

  • Assuming Guidance and Counselling is open to every UTME candidate: check the exact option on JAMB first.
  • No Mathematics credit: Early Childhood Education names it.
  • Mixing up department and programme: you apply for Early Childhood Education or a combination, not for “Educational Foundations”.
  • Choosing UNN second: UNN screens first-choice candidates only.
  • Not uploading O’level to CAPS: CAPS cannot clear an offer without it.

UNN Educational Foundations cut off mark: frequently asked questions

Does UNN offer Guidance and Counselling for UTME candidates? UNN’s brochure remarks allow Guidance and Counselling combined with a science or arts teaching subject as a four-year degree, while the older departmental page describes a Direct Entry programme for NCE holders. Confirm the exact option on your JAMB profile before registering.

Is 180 enough for Early Childhood Education in UNN? It is above the 160 screening minimum and gives you a chance, especially on catchment, but it is below UNN’s declared 200 benchmark, so aim for 190 or more.

Can NCE holders study Guidance and Counselling at UNN? Yes. UNN describes a B.Ed. Guidance and Counselling route for NCE holders with distinction, credit or merit, and the brochure remarks add TC I and ACE.

Can I use awaiting result for UNN Educational Foundations? No. UNN’s 2026/2027 notice said candidates awaiting results were not eligible for screening.
