The Caritas University Mechanical Engineering cut-off mark is effectively 150 in the UTME. Caritas still advertises “140 and above” for all applicants, but JAMB set 150 as the 2026 minimum for universities, and CAPS will not carry an admission below it. Caritas has published no departmental figure for Mechanical Engineering and sets no written Post-UTME test, so a score of 150 or more with the right subjects makes you eligible.
2027/2028 update: Caritas University cut-off marks usually stay the same from one year to the next, so the figures on this page are what 2027/2028 candidates should plan with. They come from the latest official notice (2026/2027). If the 2027/2028 notice changes anything, we will update this page.
Mechanical Engineering is the best-documented of Caritas’s four engineering courses. The NUC’s own technical report records a visit on 29 November 2024 that gave it Full accreditation with a score of 81.60%, and the NUC’s 1990 to 2025 results list carries it to a maturity date of 2029. The course is on JAMB’s Caritas list as Mechanical Engineering. The weak spot is Direct Entry, where JAMB’s brochure contradicts itself about Caritas. This guide covers that, plus subjects, O’level, screening, a safe target and the CAPS steps.

Caritas Mechanical Engineering cut-off mark history
| Session | Figure | What it is | Status |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2026/2027 | 140 and above | Caritas’s stated minimum for all applicants | Official Caritas admissions page, read 30 October 2026 |
| 2026/2027 | 150 | JAMB minimum for all universities | Official (JAMB policy meeting, 11 May 2026) |
| 2025/2026 (as titled) | 140 | Caritas admission notice signed by the Registrar, M. I. Onwuka | Official, but the text is carried over from older years |
| 2025/2026 | 150 | JAMB minimum for universities | Reported by Nairametrics, 8 July 2025 |
The notice titled for 2025/2026 still refers to the “2019 JAMB UTME” and a closing date of 15 February 2025, so it is old text that Caritas keeps reposting. I use it only for two points that have stayed constant: the 140 figure and the statement that there is no Post-UTME screening test. Blogs such as O3schools (January 2026) and Studentship repeat both points.
Caritas has used 140 for years without changing it when JAMB moved the university minimum up. For Mechanical Engineering in 2027/2028, read the website figure as the old advert and JAMB’s 150 as the rule.
Score warning
Caritas’s admissions page still says candidates with 140 and above can apply. JAMB’s 2026 minimum for every university is 150, and JAMB has said admissions outside CAPS are illegal, so a UTME score from 140 to 149 cannot give you a valid Caritas admission. Do not pay any agent who promises to “process” one.
Safe target score for Mechanical Engineering at Caritas (my advice)
Caritas sets no test and publishes no quota, so a qualified candidate who applies on time has a good chance. The risk sits elsewhere: candidates who scrape 150 often have weak Mathematics or Physics, and those are the subjects that decide whether you survive 200 level.
| Your UTME score | My read for Caritas Mechanical Engineering |
|---|---|
| Below 150 | Not eligible through UTME this session |
| 150 to 169 | Eligible; apply early and check your O’level carefully |
| 170 to 199 | Comfortable for Caritas |
| 200 and above | Strong; UNN and ESUT are realistic too |
I would aim for 170 or more. It gives you room at Caritas and keeps a public-university option open if you change your mind before CAPS closes.
UTME subject combination and O’level for Mechanical Engineering at Caritas
Caritas does not appear in the UTME or O’level remarks of JAMB’s Mechanical Engineering entry, so the general rules apply. It appears twice under Direct Entry, which is covered below.
| Requirement | Mechanical Engineering at Caritas |
|---|---|
| JAMB course name | Mechanical Engineering (Caritas University) |
| UTME subjects | Use of English, Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry |
| O’level (JAMB general) | Five credits in Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, English Language and any other science subject |
| O’level (Caritas Faculty of Engineering) | English, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, and Biology or Agricultural Science |
| Sittings | Not more than two; WAEC, NECO and NABTEB can be combined |
| Awaiting result | Allowed if the result is out by resumption |
The Direct Entry contradiction
JAMB’s brochure entry for Mechanical Engineering mentions Caritas twice in its Direct Entry remarks, and the two remarks disagree:
- One remark groups Caritas with UNIPORT and NDU as offering no Direct Entry.
- Another says Caritas accepts two A-level passes in Chemistry, Physics and Mathematics with an O’level credit in English, and also accepts ND, NCE (Technical) or HND in Mechanical Engineering.
Until Caritas settles it, treat Direct Entry into Mechanical Engineering as uncertain. If you hold an ND or HND, email info@caritasuni.edu.ng and ask whether the department admits Direct Entry candidates for 2027/2028 and at what level, and keep the reply. Then register for JAMB Direct Entry only if the answer is yes. Writing the UTME and entering at 100 level is the safe route if the reply is vague.
How Caritas screens Mechanical Engineering applicants
| Detail | What is known for 2026/2027 |
|---|---|
| Advert | “Admission ongoing for 2026/2027 session” on the Caritas admissions page |
| Who can apply | Candidates with 140 and above, whether or not Caritas was their first choice (150 in practice) |
| Written Post-UTME test | None, according to Caritas’s admission notice |
| Form fee and closing date | Not published |
| Aggregate formula | None published |
| Fees | Described as “revised”; no amounts published |
Because the no-test statement sits in a notice Caritas has reposted for several years, it describes Caritas’s usual habit. No 2027/2028 rule has been announced. Check the admissions page before you apply in case anything has been added.
Worked example
With no test or aggregate, the useful sums are your margin over the floor and over my target, plus an O’level check. These examples are illustrative.
Emeka scored 163. His NECO result has C4 in English, C6 in Mathematics, C5 in Physics, B3 in Chemistry and C4 in Agricultural Science.
- JAMB floor: 163 minus 150 = 13. Eligible.
- Against my target: 163 minus 170 = minus 7. He is below my comfort line but still admissible at Caritas.
- O’level: all five credits, with Agricultural Science as the fifth, which Caritas’s faculty list accepts. He qualifies.
- My advice: apply early, and spend the months before resumption revising Mathematics, because a C6 suggests he will find engineering mathematics hard.
Compare Adaeze, who scored 191 with Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry, and has five credits including Biology. She is well placed at Caritas, and with 191 she could also consider UNN or ESUT, whose 2026/2027 screening minimum for Mechanical Engineering was 160.
Admission odds and advice
- Accreditation counts in Caritas’s favour: the NUC visited in November 2024 and gave Full status, and the report is public.
- Settle Direct Entry in writing before you register as a Direct Entry candidate.
- Put Caritas as first choice on JAMB: Caritas accepts other candidates, but a first choice makes the CAPS step simpler.
- Know the 2026/2027 date: JAMB’s admission window for private universities runs until 30 November 2026 for the current session.
- Ask about workshops: mechanical engineering needs machine shops, a thermofluids lab and a strength-of-materials lab. Ask to see them when you visit Amorji-Nike.

How to apply for Mechanical Engineering at Caritas, step by step
- Profile code: text NIN, a space and your 11-digit NIN to 55019 or 66019 from the phone line registered with your NIN, then use the code to register.
- UTME registration: choose Caritas University and “Mechanical Engineering”, and write Use of English, Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry.
- O’level on CAPS: upload your WAEC, NECO or NABTEB result at a JAMB-accredited centre as soon as it is out. CAPS cannot show you to Caritas without it.
- Caritas application: go to the admissions page on caritasuni.edu.ng, use the application link or the “Contact admissions” option, and apply for Mechanical Engineering. Caritas has not published the 2026/2027 form price, so pay only the amount the official portal shows and keep the receipt.
- Screening: there is no written Post-UTME test on record. Expect Caritas to check your UTME score, subjects and O’level, and bring originals if you are called for document screening.
- Accept on CAPS: log in at efacility.jamb.gov.ng, open Check Admission Status, then Access my CAPS, and accept the offer once it appears. Our JAMB CAPS guide shows every screen.
- Acceptance and school fees: Caritas says its fees were revised but publishes no amounts. Pay only into the account on your official Caritas invoice, then print your JAMB admission letter.
Studying Mechanical Engineering at Caritas University
Accreditation
- NUC: the NUC technical report for Caritas’s Mechanical Engineering records a visit dated 29 November 2024, a programme score of 81.60% and Full accreditation. The Accreditation Results 1990 to 2025 list shows earlier results of Full, Interim and Full before the current Full, with a maturity date of 2029. A 2027 entrant should graduate around 2032, so the programme will need one more NUC visit during that time.
- COREN: COREN publishes its own accreditation visit reports, and I found none for Caritas. Ask the department for its COREN accreditation letter, since your registration as an engineer later depends on it.
Degree, duration and what you study
Caritas awards a B.Eng. in Mechanical Engineering. Nigerian B.Eng. programmes take five years from 100 level, and Caritas has not published a different duration. A typical outline:
- Foundation years: calculus and engineering mathematics, physics, chemistry, engineering drawing, workshop practice and applied mechanics.
- Core mechanical courses: thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, strength of materials, theory of machines, manufacturing technology and machine design.
- Industrial training: SIWES placements, usually in a factory, power station, automotive workshop or oil and gas service company.
- Final year: options such as heat transfer and power plants, refrigeration and air conditioning, automotive or production engineering, a design project and a research project.
Careers
Mechanical engineers maintain and design machinery in manufacturing plants, work in power generation, oil and gas, automotive and agricultural equipment, building services and HVAC, and in maintenance planning. Many go into project management or start fabrication businesses. Registration with COREN is the route to practising as a professional engineer.

Mistakes that cost Mechanical Engineering applicants a Caritas place
- Trusting the 140 on the website: below 150 CAPS will not process the admission.
- Registering Biology in place of Chemistry: the UTME combination is Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry.
- Assuming Direct Entry is open: the brochure contradicts itself for Caritas, so get written confirmation.
- Keeping another university as first choice: a JAMB change of institution fixes this.
- Paying people who claim inside contacts: pay only through the official Caritas portal and invoice.
Caritas Mechanical Engineering cut-off mark: frequently asked questions
Is 140 enough for Mechanical Engineering at Caritas University? No. Caritas’s website says 140, but JAMB’s 2026 minimum for universities is 150, and an admission below it cannot go through CAPS. Aim for 170 or more.
Can I enter Mechanical Engineering at Caritas with ND? JAMB’s brochure has one Caritas remark accepting ND, NCE (Technical) or HND in Mechanical Engineering and another saying Caritas has no Direct Entry. Ask Caritas in writing before you register for Direct Entry.
How many years is Mechanical Engineering at Caritas? Nigerian B.Eng. degrees run for five years from 100 level, and Caritas has not published anything different. SIWES industrial training is part of those five years.
Can I use awaiting result for Mechanical Engineering at Caritas? Yes. Caritas accepts awaiting-result candidates as long as the result is available by resumption, and you must upload it to CAPS before JAMB can process your admission.
Sources and updates
The 150 minimum, the 30 November 2026 deadline for private universities and the warning that admissions outside CAPS are illegal come from JAMB’s 2026 policy meeting as reported by the News Agency of Nigeria (11 May 2026). The 2025 minimum is from Nairametrics (8 July 2025). Caritas’s 140 figure, the statement that first-choice and other candidates may apply, the awaiting-result rule and the faculty O’level lists come from the Caritas University admissions page, read on 30 October 2026. The no-test statement comes from Caritas’s admission notice signed by the Registrar, M. I. Onwuka, with O3schools and Studentship as secondary confirmation. The course name and subject rules come from Myschool’s reprint of JAMB’s Caritas course list and the brochure entry for Mechanical Engineering, including both Caritas Direct Entry remarks, checked on 30 October 2026. Accreditation is from the NUC’s Accreditation Results 1990 to 2025 (September 2026) and the NUC technical report for Caritas Mechanical Engineering. Comparison figures come from the SUMAS, UNN and ESUT 2026/2027 notices covered in our linked guides. Safe target scores and worked examples are my own advice, not Caritas figures. Checked on 30 October 2026; this page will be updated when Caritas or JAMB publishes 2027/2028 figures.
