The CCU Education and Social Studies cut-off mark is 150 in the UTME, which is JAMB’s minimum for every Nigerian university in the 2026/2027 cycle. Coal City University, Enugu has not published a separate cut-off for this course and did not declare its own figure at JAMB’s 2026 policy meeting. If you score 150 or more and your O’level is in order, you can be considered. Any higher “CCU Social Studies cut-off” you see on a blog did not come from the university.
2027/2028 update: CCU cut-off marks usually stay the same from one year to the next, so the figures on this page are what 2027/2028 candidates should plan with. They come from the latest official notice (2026/2027). If the 2027/2028 notice changes anything, we will update this page.
Education and Social Studies is on JAMB’s list for Coal City University under exactly that name, and CCU’s own Faculty of Education page lists a B.Ed. Education and Social Studies. The NUC’s latest results publication shows Social Studies at CCU with full accreditation, maturity date 2028. Below I cover the UTME subjects (the brochure list is narrower than many candidates think), the O’level rule, Direct Entry with an NCE, screening, a safe target score and the CAPS steps.

CCU Education and Social Studies cut-off history
| Session | Figure | What it is | Status |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2026/2027 | 150 | JAMB national minimum for universities | Official (JAMB, 11 May 2026) |
| 2026/2027 | Not published | CCU’s own figure for Education and Social Studies | CCU did not declare one |
| 2025/2026 | 150 | JAMB national minimum for universities | Reported by Nairametrics, 8 July 2025 |
| 2025/2026 | Not published | CCU’s own figure | None found |
AbsTechConnect (25 May 2026) gives a CCU cut-off of 150 without citing a CCU notice. It matches JAMB’s floor, so it changes nothing for you. Older blog posts that quote 140 for CCU are out of date: 140 is below the 2026 university minimum, and CCU cannot admit anyone under 150 this cycle.
Safe target score for Education and Social Studies at CCU (my advice)
CCU does not publish the score of the last candidate it admitted into any Education course, so this table is my judgement as an admissions adviser. Education courses at private universities in Enugu usually attract fewer applicants than Law, Nursing or Computer Science, which works in your favour. The risk is less about score and more about O’level gaps and late applications.
| Your UTME score | My read for CCU Education and Social Studies |
|---|---|
| Below 150 | Not eligible for any university this session |
| 150 to 159 | Eligible; workable if your O’level is complete and you apply early |
| 160 to 179 | Comfortable for a private university Education course |
| 180 and above | Strong; also keeps ESUT and UNN within reach |
For the 2027 UTME I would aim for at least 170. That clears the 160 line ESUT and UNN used for their Education faculties in 2026, so you can still move your application to a public university if your plans change.
UTME subject combination for Education and Social Studies at CCU
I checked the JAMB brochure entry for Education and Social Studies (Myschool reprint, 30 October 2026). It has remarks for DELSU, UNIBEN, UNICAL, EBSU, AAUA, UNILORIN, TASUED, EKSU and ABU, but none for Coal City University, so CCU follows the general rule.
| Requirement | Education and Social Studies at CCU |
|---|---|
| JAMB course name to register | Education and Social Studies (Coal City University) |
| UTME subjects | Use of English plus any three of Christian Religious Studies, Economics, Geography or Physics, Government, History and Islamic Religious Studies |
| Example that fits | Government, Economics and CRS |
| O’level | Five credits including English Language and two Arts or Social Science subjects |
| Mathematics | Not named in the general brochure line; CCU’s earlier admission notices asked for credits in English and Mathematics, so get a Mathematics credit |
| Exams accepted | WAEC, NECO or NABTEB (CCU has not published its own list) |
Why Literature and Commerce are risky picks
Many Arts students assume any three Arts subjects will do. The general rule for this course names six subjects only: CRS, Economics, Geography or Physics, Government, History and IRS. Literature in English and Commerce are not on that list. EBSU accepts any three Arts or Social Science subjects, and DELSU adds Commerce, but those are remarks for those universities. If you sit Literature, Government and Economics, one of your three subjects falls outside the CCU line. Ask CCU’s admissions office before registering such a combination, or pick from the six named subjects.
The Mathematics question
The brochure’s general O’level line asks for English and two Arts or Social Science credits and does not name Mathematics. SchoolNGR’s summary of CCU’s 2022/2023 admission notice said CCU wanted five credits including English and Mathematics in no more than two sittings. That notice is older than this cycle, but it is the only CCU-specific rule I found. A D7 or E8 in Mathematics is the most common reason Arts and Social Science candidates lose a place they scored high enough for, so I would treat a Mathematics credit as required.
Direct Entry into Education and Social Studies at CCU
The general brochure rule accepts either an NCE in Social Studies from a recognised college or two A-level passes in relevant subjects. Direct Entry candidates usually start at 200 level. CCU has not published its own Direct Entry rules for this course, and its 2026/2027 form (AbsTechConnect, May 2026) was open to UTME, Direct Entry and transfer applicants.
- NCE holders: an NCE with Social Studies as one of your subjects is the closest match. Several universities ask for at least merit passes; CCU has not stated a grade, so ask before applying.
- A-level, IJMB or JUPEB: two passes in relevant subjects such as Government, Economics, History or Geography.
- O’level still counts: Direct Entry does not replace your five O’level credits, so the English and Mathematics advice above still applies.
Direct Entry registration is a separate JAMB process from the UTME. CCU runs JUPEB, IJMB and pre-degree programmes for 2026/2027 too, which some candidates use as a route into 200 level.
How CCU screening works for Education courses
| Detail | What is known |
|---|---|
| Admission advert | CCU invited applications into its undergraduate programmes for 2026/2027 (Myschool reprint of the notice, 18 May 2026) |
| Who could apply | UTME candidates, Direct Entry applicants and transfer students (AbsTechConnect, May 2026; unofficial) |
| Application portal | portal.ccu.edu.ng (the Apply Now link on ccu.edu.ng) |
| Form fee | ₦2,000 according to AbsTechConnect; CCU has not confirmed it in any notice I could open |
| Screening date and format | Not published |
| Aggregate formula | Not published |
| Admission letters | Only through the CCU admission portal and your registered email (CCU notice, 13 August 2026) |
Worked example for an Education and Social Studies candidate
CCU has not published an aggregate formula, so I will not invent one. What you can calculate is your margin over the minimum and over a sensible target, then check your O’level line by line.
Take Amarachi, who scored 168 with Government, Economics and CRS. Her WAEC (one sitting) shows English C4, Mathematics C6, Government B3, CRS B2, Economics C5 and Civic Education B3.
- Eligibility: 168 minus 150 = 18 marks above the minimum.
- Against my safe target: 168 is 2 marks short of the 170 I suggest, which is fine at CCU but tight if she later moves to ESUT.
- UTME subjects: all three are on the brochure’s list of six.
- O’level: English plus Government and CRS covers the general rule, and she has a Mathematics credit too.
- My advice: apply on the portal as soon as the form opens, upload the result to CAPS and keep CCU as first choice.
Now Ikenna, who scored 181 with Literature in English, Government and Economics, and has a D7 in Mathematics. His score is 31 above the minimum, yet two things could stop him: Literature is outside the general subject list, and the Mathematics grade fails CCU’s earlier rule. I would tell him to confirm the subject question with CCU in writing and to resit Mathematics in the November/December series.
Admission odds and practical advice
- Your O’level decides more than your score: above 150, a complete O’level and an early application matter more at CCU than an extra ten marks.
- Make CCU your first choice: if you chose another school, do a JAMB change of institution before admissions start.
- Know how CCU packages Social Studies: its Faculty of Education page lists Education and Social Studies on its own and also Social Studies paired with Educational Management or with Guidance and Counselling. Tell the admissions office which one you want.
- Mind the 2026/2027 deadline: JAMB set 30 November 2026 for private universities to finish 2026/2027 admissions. Expect a similar cut-off date in the 2027/2028 cycle once JAMB announces it.
How to apply for Education and Social Studies at CCU, step by step
- Get your JAMB profile code: send NIN, a space and your 11-digit NIN to 55019 or 66019 from the phone line linked to your NIN.
- Register the UTME correctly: pick Coal City University and the course “Education and Social Studies”, with Use of English plus three of CRS, Economics, Geography or Physics, Government, History and IRS.
- Upload your O’level to CAPS: do it at a JAMB-accredited centre once your result is out. CCU cannot recommend you on CAPS without it, and awaiting-result candidates stay stuck until the upload is done.
- Apply on the CCU portal: open portal.ccu.edu.ng (the Apply Now link on ccu.edu.ng), fill the undergraduate form, pay the fee the portal shows and print your slip.
- Watch for screening: CCU has not published a screening date or format for Education courses, so check the portal and your registered email after you apply.
- Accept on CAPS: log in to efacility.jamb.gov.ng, choose Check Admission Status, then Access my CAPS, and accept the offer. JAMB gives four weeks to accept. Our JAMB CAPS guide explains each status.
- Pay acceptance and clear: CCU has not published its acceptance or tuition fees in any source I could open, so pay only what your portal invoice shows, through the channel on the portal.
Warning
CCU said in an August 2026 notice that admission letters come only through its admission portal and the email you registered with. Ignore anyone who asks you to pay into a personal account or over WhatsApp for a “CCU slot”, and check that any offer shows on your JAMB CAPS page before you pay acceptance.
Studying Education and Social Studies at CCU
CCU received its operating licence from the Federal Government on 22 November 2016. Its Faculty of Education page, last updated in February 2024, places Education and Social Studies in the Department of Education Foundation, alongside Educational Management, Guidance and Counselling, Business Education and the other single-subject Education degrees. The dean named on that page is Professor Rev. Fr. Augustine Akubue.
Accreditation
The NUC’s “Accreditation Results 1990 to 2025” publication (September 2026) lists Social Studies under CCU’s Education programmes as Full, maturity date 2028, with 2019 shown as the start year. Full accreditation lasts five years, so this programme has its next NUC visit due around 2028, after a 2027 entrant has started.
What you study
CCU has not published its course outline. A four-year B.Ed. or B.Sc.(Ed.) Social Studies in Nigeria normally combines education courses with social science content:
- Education courses: history and philosophy of education, educational psychology, curriculum studies, measurement and evaluation, and teaching methods for Social Studies.
- Social Studies content: Nigerian society and culture, citizenship and civic education, population and environmental studies, economics and government topics, and social problems.
- Teaching practice: supervised teaching in secondary schools, usually in the later years, plus a research project in the final year.
Careers and teacher registration
Graduates teach Social Studies and Civic Education in junior and senior secondary schools, and also work in curriculum development, school administration, community development and NGOs. To work as a registered teacher in Nigeria you also have to pass the Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria’s Professional Qualifying Examination, which TRCN has held since 2017. An education degree on its own does not get you on the register.

Other Social Studies options in Enugu
| Institution | Entry route | Minimum for 2026/2027 |
|---|---|---|
| Coal City University | B.Ed. through UTME or Direct Entry | 150 UTME |
| Federal College of Education, Eha-Amufu | NCE Social Studies | No UTME score; four O’level credits and JAMB NCE registration |
| University of Nigeria, Nsukka | Social Studies Education in the Department of Social Science Education | 160 UTME to screen |
See our UNN Social Science Education guide for the UNN route. If a degree is not possible this year, the FCE Eha-Amufu Social Studies NCE guide explains the no-UTME NCE route, and an NCE in Social Studies is one of the Direct Entry qualifications for this degree.
Mistakes that cost Education and Social Studies applicants a CCU place
- Registering Literature or Commerce as one of the three: neither is on the general list. Fix it with a JAMB change of course window if you need to, or confirm with CCU first.
- No Mathematics credit: CCU’s earlier notices asked for one.
- O’level not on CAPS: CCU cannot recommend you without it.
- Paying agents: letters come only through the portal and your registered email.
If you are preparing for the 2027 UTME, start with when JAMB 2027 registration starts, then what to do with your JAMB score once results are out.
CCU Education and Social Studies cut-off mark: frequently asked questions
Is 160 enough for Education and Social Studies at Coal City University? Yes. 160 is 10 marks above the 150 minimum, and CCU has no higher cut-off for this course. Your O’level and early application will decide the rest.
Can I use Literature in English for Social Studies Education in JAMB at CCU? Literature is not one of the six subjects in the brochure’s general rule, and there is no CCU remark adding it. Ask CCU before you register it, or use Government, Economics and CRS or History.
Is Social Studies Education at CCU accredited? Yes. The NUC results publication lists Social Studies at CCU as Full, with a maturity date of 2028.
Can I enter CCU Social Studies with an NCE? Yes. The brochure accepts an NCE in Social Studies or two A-level passes for Direct Entry, usually into 200 level, and you still need five O’level credits.
Sources and updates
The 150 national minimum and the 30 November 2026 admission deadline JAMB set for private universities in the 2026/2027 cycle come from JAMB’s 2026 policy meeting as reported by the News Agency of Nigeria on 11 May 2026; the 2025 figure is from Nairametrics (8 July 2025). CCU’s absence from the list of universities that declared their own 2026 cut-offs is based on News Central’s list (11 May 2026). The course name and subject rules come from Myschool’s reprint of JAMB’s CCU course list and the JAMB brochure entry for Education and Social Studies, both checked on 30 October 2026.
