SUMAS Cut-Off Mark for Mechanical Engineering 2027/2028: O’Level Subject Rules and Requirements

The SUMAS cut off mark for Mechanical Engineering in 2027/2028 is 150. Here are the O’Level subject rules, UTME combination, accreditation status, supplementary admission and steps to get in.

The SUMAS cut off mark for Mechanical Engineering in 2026/2027 is 150 in the UTME. That is the general minimum the State University of Medical and Applied Sciences (SUMAS), Igbo-Eno, Enugu State, set for all its programmes in the 2026/2027 Post-UTME notice, and the same 150 applied in 2025/2026. Mechanical Engineering was also on the SUMAS supplementary admission list in October 2026, again for candidates with 150 or more in the 2026 UTME.

2027/2028 update: SUMAS cut-off marks usually stay the same from one year to the next, so the figures on this page are what 2027/2028 candidates should plan with. They come from the latest official notice (2026/2027). If the 2027/2028 notice changes anything, we will update this page.

There is no departmental cut off for Mechanical Engineering at SUMAS. The university has never published one, and it has not published an aggregate formula, a merit list with scores, or catchment and ELDS states either. The programme sits in the Faculty of Engineering and the Built Environment, runs with NUC approval, and is not yet accredited because its NUC visit is due in 2026. This guide sets out the verified numbers, the O’Level subject rules that trip people up, a worked screening example, my safe-score advice and the admission steps.

Read the 150 as an entry ticket. It lets you into SUMAS screening for Mechanical Engineering; it does not tell you the score that eventually got admitted, which is what a departmental cut off would be. SUMAS has never published that second figure. The minimum is reviewed each year after JAMB’s policy meeting, so use the 2027/2028 SUMAS notice when it is out. You may see 160 for SUMAS on a private directory that also calls it a federal university. That is not a SUMAS figure.

O’Level subject rules for SUMAS Mechanical Engineering

This is where most Mechanical Engineering applicants lose out, so it comes first. Two sets of rules apply at once: the SUMAS rule for every programme and JAMB’s entry for the course. Your results must satisfy both.

RuleWhat it asks for
SUMAS rule (all programmes)Five credits including English Language, Mathematics and Physics, plus two other relevant subjects, at not more than two sittings
JAMB brochure (Mechanical Engineering)Five credits in Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, English Language and any other science subject
What to presentEnglish Language, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and one more science, such as Further Mathematics, Technical Drawing or Biology

A few points that matter in practice:

  • Chemistry is not optional. The SUMAS rule alone does not name Chemistry, but JAMB’s Mechanical Engineering entry does. Leave it out and your O’Level may not qualify.
  • English must be a credit. Some universities accept a pass in English for engineering. SUMAS names English Language among its required credits, so do not rely on that waiver.
  • Two sittings at most. WAEC plus NECO is fine; a third result is not.
  • Upload everything to CAPS. SUMAS screens using the results on JAMB CAPS. The 2026 deadline for uploading was 15 August.

UTME subjects and Direct Entry for Mechanical Engineering

RequirementMechanical Engineering
UTME subjectsUse of English, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry
Direct Entry (SUMAS rule)At least second class lower or its equivalent in OND, HND or a first degree, cleared on JAMB e-Facility
Direct Entry (JAMB brochure, general)Two A Level passes from Chemistry, Physics and Mathematics; or ND upper credit, NCE (technical) or HND in Mechanical Engineering

The UTME line comes from JAMB’s usual Mechanical Engineering entry as reproduced by Myschool. SUMAS has not published its own copy, so confirm it on the JAMB e-brochure when you register. For Direct Entry, the SUMAS notice speaks of OND, HND and degree holders and does not mention A Levels or NCE. If you hold an ND in Mechanical Engineering, ask SUMAS which level you will be placed in before you apply.

Our JAMB Chemistry syllabus guide covers one of your four UTME papers.

Mechanical Engineering on the 2027/2028 supplementary list

On 17 October 2026, Myschool and FreshNote reported a SUMAS supplementary admission exercise for programmes with places left. Mechanical Engineering was on it, along with the other five engineering programmes. I did not find this notice on the SUMAS website, so treat the details as reported.

  • Who could apply: candidates with 150 or more in the 2026 UTME who put SUMAS first but were not admitted into their course, and candidates ready to make SUMAS their first choice.
  • Other programmes on the list: Architecture; Biomedical, Chemical, Civil, Computer, and Electrical and Electronics Engineering; Health Administration and Hospital Management; Prosthetics and Orthotics; Dental Therapy; Dental Technology; Applied Microbiology; Biochemistry; Genetics and Biotechnology; ICT; Industrial Chemistry; Pure and Industrial Physics; Pharmacology; Human Physiology.
  • Not on the list: Medicine, Nursing, Pharmacy, Medical Laboratory Science, Radiography, Physiotherapy, Nutrition and Dietetics, Public Health, Human Anatomy, Computer Science and Quantity Surveying.
  • Closing date: none was reported.

Engineering admissions then appeared in Batch 2 on 21 October 2026. A course that is reopened to new applicants while its main list is still being released has more seats than takers, which is good news if your score is modest.

Supplementary admission

No closing date was reported for the October 2026 SUMAS supplementary admission. If you want Mechanical Engineering this session, contact the SUMAS admissions office (08067390088 or admissionofficer@sumas.edu.ng) now, before the lists close.

Is Mechanical Engineering at SUMAS accredited?

Not yet. The NUC granted full accreditation to 15 SUMAS programmes after its exercise of 28 October to 3 December 2025, and SUMAS said those were all the programmes due at the time. Mechanical Engineering and the other engineering degrees were not on that list. SUMAS says its remaining programmes are due for NUC accreditation in 2026, once the NUC schedules the visit.

“Not yet accredited” is the right description. A programme usually gets its first accreditation visit once it has run long enough, so this reflects timing, not a failed visit. COREN accredits engineering programmes separately, and I found no published COREN accreditation for SUMAS. COREN’s public lists can lag, so ask the department about the COREN visit at clearance.

How SUMAS screening works for Mechanical Engineering

SUMAS described its 2026/2027 Post-UTME as a screening exercise and published no written test or date. It has not explained how it combines UTME scores and O’Level grades. A later notice asked some admitted candidates who skipped Post-UTME to register on SAMP, pay the screening fee and report to the ICT Unit for verification, which suggests screening on records. SUMAS has not confirmed this.

Here is the 50/50 aggregate used by many Nigerian universities, to show how the parts could add up. SUMAS has not published its formula; this is an illustration only.

  1. UTME part: UTME score ÷ 8, maximum 50 points.
  2. O’Level part: five relevant grades scored A1 = 10, B2 = 9, B3 = 8, C4 = 7, C5 = 6, C6 = 5, maximum 50 points.
  3. Aggregate: the sum of both, out of 100.

Amaka scored 196 in the UTME. Her WAEC and NECO results (two sittings) give B2 in Mathematics, B3 in Physics, C4 in Chemistry, C5 in English Language and B2 in Technical Drawing.

PartWorkingPoints
UTME196 ÷ 824.5
O’Level9 + 8 + 7 + 6 + 939
Total24.5 + 3963.5 out of 100

If Amaka had a C5 in Chemistry and nothing else changed, she would lose one point, the same as eight UTME marks. If she had no Chemistry credit at all, the arithmetic would not matter, because she would fail the subject rule.

How competitive is Mechanical Engineering at SUMAS?

Less competitive than the health courses SUMAS is known for. Mechanical Engineering was opened to supplementary applicants in October 2026; Medicine, Nursing, Pharmacy and Computer Science were not. That tells you there were places to fill.

SUMAS has not published a quota, catchment states or ELDS states. The 45% merit, 35% catchment and 20% ELDS split quoted online is a federal university guideline, and SUMAS, a state university, has not said it uses it.

My advice (not an official figure): aim for 180 or above in the UTME with credits in English, Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry at no more than two sittings. That gives you a comfortable chance for Mechanical Engineering at SUMAS. During the 2026/2027 supplementary exercise, candidates closer to 150 could still be considered, but you should not plan your year around the bare minimum.

How to get admission into SUMAS Mechanical Engineering

  1. Get your JAMB profile code: text NIN, a space and your 11-digit NIN to 55019 or 66019 from the line linked to your NIN, then use the code to register for the UTME.
  2. Make SUMAS your first choice: choose State University of Medical and Applied Sciences, Igbo-Eno, and Mechanical Engineering. SUMAS screens first-choice candidates only. If you chose another school, do a JAMB change of institution; this also applies if you are moving to SUMAS for the supplementary exercise.
  3. Upload your O’Level on CAPS: confirm English, Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry credits are all showing. The 2026 SUMAS deadline was 15 August.
  4. Meet the age rule: at least 16 years old by 30 September 2026.
  5. Register on the SUMAS portal: apply at sumas.edu.ng/apply or on samp.sumas.edu.ng, pay ₦2,000 with your JAMB registration number as the narration, and enter the same JAMB number, date of birth, state of origin and course as on CAPS. Only one application is allowed.
  6. Check your admission: watch the SUMAS batch lists, then log in to JAMB e-Facility, use Check Admission Status and Access my CAPS, and confirm on SAMP.
  7. Accept, and change course if needed: accept the offer on CAPS and print the JAMB admission letter. If SUMAS offers you Mechanical Engineering after you applied for another course, change your course on JAMB within three days, as the 2026/2027 notice required.
  8. Pay the acceptance fee: log in at eportal.sumas.edu.ng as NEW STUDENT with your JAMB number and SAMP password, generate the ₦50,000 acceptance fee and pay through the SUMAS Revenue Portal only.

For the full screening rules, read our SUMAS Post-UTME form 2026/2027 guide. Clearance is covered in our SUMAS instructions to successful candidates post, and our JAMB CAPS guide explains each CAPS status.

What you study in Mechanical Engineering at SUMAS

Mechanical Engineering deals with machines, energy and materials: how things move, carry loads, heat up, cool down and are made. The first years are shared with other engineering students and cover mathematics, physics, chemistry, engineering drawing, workshop practice and computing. You then build up through engineering mechanics, strength of materials, thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, machine design, manufacturing processes, heat transfer, vibrations, control and automotive or production topics, ending with a final-year design project. Students usually go on an industrial attachment (SIWES) before the final year.

SUMAS has not published the duration of this programme. Nigerian B.Eng. degrees usually last five years for UTME entrants, so plan for that and confirm with the department. Lectures hold at the Igbo-Eno campus, Udenu Local Government Area, Enugu State.

The only fee schedule on the SUMAS site is for 2022/2023, which charged Engineering students ₦251,400. No 2026/2027 fees have been published, so use that as a rough guide, plus the ₦50,000 acceptance fee.

Career paths after Mechanical Engineering

Mechanical engineers work in manufacturing plants, oil and gas, power stations, automotive and equipment maintenance, building services (heating, ventilation and air conditioning), agro-processing, mining and construction. Some move into project management, design consulting, renewable energy, or teaching and research after a master’s. You register with COREN after graduation and the required experience, so the programme’s COREN status is worth following.

Common mistakes Mechanical Engineering applicants make

  • No Chemistry credit: JAMB’s Mechanical Engineering entry needs it, even though the SUMAS rule only names English, Mathematics and Physics.
  • A pass in English: SUMAS asks for a credit.
  • A third sitting: SUMAS takes no more than two.
  • Different course on CAPS and SAMP: the details must match exactly.
  • Waiting for a closing date: none was published for the supplementary exercise, so apply early.
