SUMAS Cut-Off Mark for Public Health 2027/2028: Subject Combination, Accreditation and Career Path

The SUMAS cut off mark for Public Health in 2027/2028 is 150. The course is approved but not yet NUC-accredited (due 2026). See the subject combination, O’Level rules, a screening example and careers.

The SUMAS cut off mark for Public Health in 2026/2027 is 150 in the UTME. The State University of Medical and Applied Sciences (SUMAS), Igbo-Eno, Enugu State, set 150 as the minimum for all programmes in its 2026/2027 Post-UTME notice, the same figure it used in 2025/2026. With 150 or more, SUMAS as first choice and the required O’Level credits, you could apply for screening into Public Health.

2027/2028 update: SUMAS cut-off marks usually stay the same from one year to the next, so the figures on this page are what 2027/2028 candidates should plan with. They come from the latest official notice (2026/2027). If the 2027/2028 notice changes anything, we will update this page.

There is no separate Public Health cut off from SUMAS. The university has never published departmental cut offs, an aggregate formula, merit scores or catchment lists. One more thing to know before you apply: Public Health at SUMAS runs with NUC approval but is not yet accredited, because its accreditation visit is due in 2026. This guide explains what that means, what subjects you need, how screening appears to work, the score I would aim for and the career paths the degree opens.

Keep the two kinds of cut off apart. The general one (150) is the entry requirement for screening. A departmental cut off would be the lowest score SUMAS admitted into Public Health in a given year, known only after screening. SUMAS has never released the second kind.

Universities review the minimum every year after JAMB’s policy meeting, so the 150 that held for two sessions could change for 2027/2028. Watch for the new SUMAS notice. A figure of 160 shows up for SUMAS on a private directory that also describes it as a federal university; SUMAS has not used that number.

Is Public Health at SUMAS accredited?

Not yet. In the NUC exercise held from 28 October to 3 December 2025, SUMAS received full accreditation for 15 programmes, which it described as all the programmes due for accreditation at that time. Public Health was not among them. SUMAS said its remaining programmes are due for accreditation in 2026 and are waiting for the NUC to schedule the visit.

That is normal for a new programme. The NUC usually accredits a degree once it has run long enough to be assessed as a whole, often when the first set of students is close to graduating. Public Health at SUMAS is approved and admitting students; it simply has not had its accreditation visit yet. Two practical points follow:

  • Your degree: if the programme earns accreditation before your set graduates, your certificate is unaffected. If a visit goes badly, the NUC can give interim status and come back later, or deny accreditation and stop new admissions until the problems are fixed.
  • What to ask: at clearance, ask the department when the NUC visit is scheduled. It is a fair question, and a department that knows its timeline will tell you.

UTME subjects and O’Level requirements for Public Health

SUMAS follows the JAMB brochure for subject requirements. The brochure’s university entry for Public Health, as reproduced by Myschool, is below. JAMB also lists Public Health Technology and Health Education as separate courses with different subjects, so pick the right entry when you check the e-brochure.

RequirementPublic Health at SUMAS
UTME subjectsUse of English, Physics, Chemistry, Biology
O’Level (JAMB brochure)Five credits in Mathematics, Chemistry, Biology, Physics and English Language
O’Level (SUMAS rule)Five credits including English Language, Mathematics and Physics, plus two other relevant subjects
SittingsMaximum of two
Direct Entry (SUMAS rule)At least second class lower or its equivalent in OND, HND or a first degree, cleared on JAMB e-Facility
Direct Entry (JAMB brochure)Two A Level passes from Biology or Zoology, Chemistry and Physics; or a registered nurse (RN) qualification with five relevant O’Level credits

So you need credits in English, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Biology, and Physics sits in both your UTME and your O’Level list.

The SUMAS Direct Entry rule covers OND, HND and first degree holders. The JAMB brochure also allows A Level and nursing qualifications for Public Health in general, but the SUMAS notice does not mention those routes. If you are a registered nurse or have A Levels, confirm with the admissions office (08067390088) before you pay for anything.

Our JAMB Biology syllabus and JAMB Chemistry syllabus guides will help with two of your three science papers.

How SUMAS screening works, with an example

SUMAS called its 2026/2027 Post-UTME a screening exercise and did not publish a written test or a test date. It has not said how much weight it puts on your UTME score compared with your O’Level grades. A later notice told admitted candidates who skipped the Post-UTME to register on SAMP, pay the screening fee and go to the ICT Unit for verification. That points to screening based on your records, though SUMAS has not confirmed it.

To show how a records-based ranking can work, here is the 50/50 aggregate that many Nigerian universities use. SUMAS has not published its formula; this example is for illustration only.

  1. UTME: divide your score by 8 (400 becomes 50).
  2. O’Level: give each of five relevant grades points: A1 = 10, B2 = 9, B3 = 8, C4 = 7, C5 = 6, C6 = 5 (maximum 50).
  3. Total: add both for a score out of 100.

Emeka scored 196 in the UTME. His WAEC result has B3 in Biology, B3 in English Language, C4 in Chemistry, C4 in Mathematics and C6 in Physics.

PartWorkingPoints
UTME196 ÷ 824.5
O’Level8 + 8 + 7 + 7 + 535
Total24.5 + 3559.5 out of 100

A C6 is still a credit, so Emeka meets the SUMAS rule. Under a method like this, though, every grade above C6 counts, and raising Physics and Chemistry to B3 would add four points, the same as 32 more UTME marks.

How competitive is Public Health at SUMAS?

Moderately, as far as the evidence shows. Public Health was not on the October 2026 supplementary admission list, which reopened programmes that still had places, so it seems to have filled through the main batches. It also did not appear in the summaries of Batch 1 or Batch 2 that I could read, so check every batch SUMAS posts, including Batch 3 and later ones.

SUMAS has not published a quota, catchment states or ELDS states for Public Health. The 45% merit, 35% catchment and 20% ELDS split is a federal university guideline, and SUMAS, a state university, has never said it applies it.

My advice (not an official figure): aim for 190 or above in the UTME for Public Health at SUMAS, with clean credits in English, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Biology. Candidates from 160 to 190 can still be screened and may be admitted, but you are measuring yourself against an unpublished line, so keep a backup plan.

Step by step: from JAMB registration to SUMAS acceptance

  1. Profile code first: send NIN followed by a space and your 11-digit NIN to 55019 or 66019 from your NIN-linked number. JAMB texts back a profile code, which you need to register for the UTME.
  2. Choose SUMAS and Public Health: make State University of Medical and Applied Sciences, Igbo-Eno, your first choice and Public Health your course. If you already registered for another school, do a JAMB change of institution before screening, because SUMAS screens first-choice candidates only.
  3. Upload O’Level results to CAPS: SUMAS can only screen you if your WAEC, NECO or NABTEB results are on CAPS. Its 2026 deadline was 15 August.
  4. Apply on the SUMAS portal: use sumas.edu.ng/apply or samp.sumas.edu.ng, pay ₦2,000 with your JAMB number as the narration, and make sure your JAMB number, date of birth, state of origin and course match CAPS. Only one application is allowed.
  5. Track admission: check each SUMAS batch list, then log in to JAMB e-Facility, Check Admission Status and Access my CAPS. Confirm on SAMP.
  6. Accept on CAPS: accept the offer and print the JAMB admission letter. If SUMAS offered you a different course, you had three days in 2026/2027 to change it on JAMB.
  7. Acceptance fee: at eportal.sumas.edu.ng, click NEW STUDENT, log in with your JAMB number and SAMP password, generate the ₦50,000 acceptance fee and pay on the SUMAS Revenue Portal.

Our SUMAS Post-UTME form 2026/2027 guide lists every eligibility rule, and our SUMAS admission list guide explains clearance. For CAPS, see our JAMB CAPS guide.

Check every batch

SUMAS releases 2026/2027 admissions in batches, and Public Health was not named in the Batch 1 or Batch 2 summaries available. Keep checking the SUMAS website and your JAMB CAPS until the lists end, and accept quickly when an offer appears.

What you study in Public Health

Public Health deals with the health of whole populations instead of one patient at a time: how diseases spread, how to prevent them and how to organise health services. Your early courses are in the basic sciences, then anatomy, physiology and microbiology. Later you study epidemiology, biostatistics, environmental and occupational health, health promotion and education, reproductive and family health, nutrition, health policy and management, and research methods, with fieldwork in communities and health facilities.

SUMAS has not published the degree title or how long the programme runs. Public Health degrees in Nigeria generally take four or five years, so confirm with the department. You will be at the Igbo-Eno campus in Udenu Local Government Area, Enugu State, next to the developing SUMAS Teaching Hospital; the Enugu State Government reported in January 2026 that its outpatient department, a 100-bed Mother and Child Hospital and a 120-bed Medical Centre were complete.

The only SUMAS fee schedule online is for 2022/2023, when Pharmacy and Allied Health students paid ₦301,400. No 2026/2027 figure has been released. Budget for the ₦50,000 acceptance fee as well.

Career paths for Public Health graduates

Public Health graduates work in disease surveillance and control, immunisation and primary health care programmes, health promotion, environmental health, and monitoring and evaluation for government agencies, NGOs and international organisations. Others go into health research, data analysis, hospital and programme administration, or a Master of Public Health (MPH) to specialise in epidemiology, health policy or global health.

If you like the population side of health, these SUMAS programmes are close cousins:

Mistakes Public Health applicants make

  • Skipping Physics: at SUMAS you need Physics, Chemistry and Biology in the UTME and a Physics credit at O’Level.
  • Calling it “unaccredited”: it is not yet accredited because its visit is due in 2026. That is different from failing accreditation.
  • Missing later batches: if your name is not in the first lists, keep checking.
  • SUMAS as second choice: you will not be screened.
  • Mismatched portal details: your SAMP details must match CAPS exactly.

SUMAS Public Health cut off mark: frequently asked questions

Is 170 enough for Public Health in SUMAS? A 170 is above the 150 minimum, so SUMAS will screen you. With no published departmental cut off, nobody can say whether it is enough; strong O’Level grades help, and I would feel safer at 190 or more.

Is Public Health at SUMAS accredited by NUC? Not yet. It was not among the 15 programmes accredited in late 2025, and SUMAS says its remaining programmes, Public Health included, are due for NUC accreditation in 2026.

What subjects do I need for Public Health at SUMAS? In the UTME: English, Physics, Chemistry and Biology. At O’Level: credits in English Language, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Biology, in no more than two sittings.

Can a nurse get Direct Entry into Public Health at SUMAS? The SUMAS notice allows Direct Entry with at least second class lower or its equivalent in OND, HND or a first degree. It does not mention nursing certificates, so ask the admissions office before applying.
