The SUMAS cut off mark for Nursing Science in 2026/2027 is 150 in the UTME. The State University of Medical and Applied Sciences (SUMAS), Igbo-Eno, Enugu State, used 150 as the minimum for every programme in its 2026/2027 Post-UTME and Direct Entry notice, as it did in 2025/2026. To be screened you also needed SUMAS as first choice and five O’level credits, including English, Mathematics and Physics, in no more than two sittings.
2027/2028 update: SUMAS cut-off marks usually stay the same from one year to the next, so the figures on this page are what 2027/2028 candidates should plan with. They come from the latest official notice (2026/2027). If the 2027/2028 notice changes anything, we will update this page.
That 150 only gets you into the screening. SUMAS has never published a departmental cut off for Nursing, and Nursing was full before SUMAS opened its supplementary round in October 2026, so the real competition sits well above 150. There is one more thing every Nursing applicant should know before choosing SUMAS: the university’s Nursing degree has full NUC accreditation, but SUMAS does not appear on the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria (NMCN) list of approved schools. This guide covers both, along with the subjects, screening, a worked aggregate, a safe target score and the steps to admission.

SUMAS publishes its admission lists as masked JAMB numbers under each course, with no scores beside them. So the lowest score admitted into Nursing is known only to the university. A website that gives you a precise SUMAS Nursing cut off is guessing.
NMCN approval: what Nursing applicants should check
Nursing is a licensed profession. Nursing students in Nigeria are indexed with NMCN, and graduates sit NMCN’s licensing examination before they can register and practise as nurses. NMCN keeps a list of the schools it has approved.
NMCN’s “List of Approved Schools 2025 (Updated)”, a PDF it uploaded in January 2026, does not include SUMAS. It is missing from the approved university nursing departments and from the separate group of universities allowed to admit while awaiting NMCN accreditation. In Enugu State, the list names the University of Nigeria Enugu Campus and ESUT Parklane as approved, and Maduka University, Coal City University, Godfrey Okoye University and Peaceland University as admitting pending accreditation.
SUMAS’s own late 2025 notice said several professional bodies had verified its programmes and that others had not yet scheduled visits. It did not name NMCN either way. A council list can also lag behind a recent approval. What we can say is that no NMCN approval for SUMAS Nursing is on public record, and that is worth checking before you commit five years to the course.
Check NMCN status
SUMAS Nursing Science has full NUC accreditation, but SUMAS is not on NMCN’s list of approved schools (2025, updated January 2026). Before you accept a Nursing offer, ask the SUMAS admission office (08067390088, admissionofficer@sumas.edu.ng) whether NMCN has approved the programme and whether students are being indexed.
UTME subjects and O’level requirements for SUMAS Nursing
JAMB’s usual combination for Nursing Science is Use of English, Biology, Chemistry and Physics. SUMAS is not among the universities with special remarks in the brochure entry as reproduced online, so the standard rule applies as far as anyone can tell. Confirm on the e-brochure on your JAMB profile.
| Requirement | Nursing Science at SUMAS |
|---|---|
| UTME subjects | Use of English, Biology, Chemistry, Physics |
| O’level credits | Five: English Language, Mathematics, Physics plus two relevant (Biology and Chemistry) |
| Sittings | Not more than two (WAEC, NECO, NABTEB or equivalent) |
| UTME score | 150 or above in the 2026 UTME |
| Age | 16 or older by 30 September 2026 |
| First choice | SUMAS on JAMB CAPS |
| Direct Entry | At least second class lower, or the equivalent in OND or HND, cleared by JAMB |
A credit is C6 or better. Biology and Chemistry are the two subjects most likely to separate you from other candidates, because they are the ones Nursing leans on most.
Direct Entry for nurses
SUMAS’s notice asks all Direct Entry candidates outside Medicine for at least a second class lower or the equivalent in an OND, HND or first degree. It does not set any extra rule for Nursing. Across Nigeria, the JAMB brochure lets universities take registered nurses (RN) with the right O’level credits, and some ask for nursing experience. SUMAS has not published whether it takes RNs or how much experience it wants, so ask the admission office before you register as a Direct Entry candidate.
How SUMAS screens Nursing candidates
SUMAS did not publish a written Post-UTME test for 2026/2027. The screening was an online application: you registered on the portal, paid ₦2,000 with your JAMB number as narration, and submitted your details. SUMAS later told admitted candidates who skipped Post-UTME to register on SAMP, pay and get verified at the ICT Unit. That suggests ranking on your records, though SUMAS has not explained its method.
The checks SUMAS has stated:
- 150 or more in the 2026 UTME
- SUMAS as first choice
- Five O’level credits uploaded to JAMB CAPS by SUMAS’s deadline (15 August 2026)
- Registration number, date of birth, state of origin and programme matching on JAMB and the SUMAS portal
- One application only
Worked example (illustration only)
SUMAS has not published how it combines UTME and O’level. A common method at Nigerian universities uses UTME ÷ 8 (up to 50 points) plus five O’level grades (A1 = 10, B2 = 9, B3 = 8, C4 = 7, C5 = 6, C6 = 5, up to 50 points). It is shown here only so you can see how the parts trade off.
Blessing scored 238 in the UTME. In WAEC she has B2 in Biology, B3 in Chemistry, C4 in Physics and B3 in English; in NECO she added B3 in Mathematics.
| Part | Working | Points |
|---|---|---|
| UTME | 238 ÷ 8 | 29.75 |
| O’level | 9 + 8 + 7 + 8 + 8 | 40 |
| Aggregate | 29.75 + 40 | 69.75 out of 100 |
Her classmate Tobenna scored 255 but has C6 in Chemistry and C5 in Physics with B3s elsewhere: 31.9 + (8 + 5 + 6 + 8 + 8) = 66.9. Despite 17 more marks in JAMB, he ranks below Blessing under this method. The lesson holds for any method that counts O’level: strong science grades help as much as a high UTME score.
What score should you aim for in SUMAS Nursing?
This is my advice, not a SUMAS figure. Nursing is one of the most requested courses in Nigerian universities, and at SUMAS it filled during the main admission batches: it appeared on Batch 2 on 21 October 2026 and was left off the supplementary list. With that in mind, I would aim for 240 or more to feel safe, and treat 220 to 240 as a fair chance with strong O’level grades. Below 210, have a second option.
SUMAS has published no catchment or ELDS list. Your state of origin may or may not count, and there is no rule to plan around.
If you miss Nursing at SUMAS, the Allied Health courses with the same UTME subjects include Medical Laboratory Science, Radiography and Radiation Science and Physiotherapy. Public Health is another option for candidates interested in community health.
Studying Nursing Science at SUMAS
Nursing at SUMAS sits in the Faculty of Allied Health Sciences, on the Igbo-Eno campus in Udenu Local Government Area, on the Ninth Mile to Obollo-Afor road. A B.N.Sc. in Nigeria usually takes 5 years. SUMAS has not published its own programme outline, so here is what an NUC Nursing curriculum typically includes:
- Anatomy, physiology and biochemistry for nurses in the early years
- Foundations of nursing and nursing ethics
- Medical-surgical nursing, maternal and child health nursing, and mental health nursing
- Community and public health nursing
- Clinical postings in hospital wards and community health centres
- Research methods and a final year project
The 2022/2023 fee schedule, still the only one on the SUMAS website, put Pharmacy and Allied Health Sciences at ₦301,400. Your portal invoice may differ and is the one that counts.
Nursing Science is one of the 15 SUMAS programmes that received full NUC accreditation after the NUC exercise held from 28 October to 3 December 2025.
Careers for Nursing graduates
Once licensed by NMCN, graduate nurses work in hospital wards, theatres, intensive care, public health programmes, schools, industry and the armed forces. Many go on to midwifery, nurse education, nursing administration or a master’s degree. Nigerian nurses also take licensing exams to work abroad, which is one reason demand for Nursing places is so high. Each of these routes starts with NMCN registration, which is why the approval question above matters.
Steps to get admission into SUMAS Nursing
The 2026/2027 Post-UTME closed on 4 October 2026. These are the steps to follow from JAMB registration to clearance.
- Generate a JAMB profile code: send NIN, a space and your 11-digit NIN to 55019 or 66019 from the phone number linked to your NIN.
- Register for the UTME with SUMAS first: choose Nursing Science with Use of English, Biology, Chemistry and Physics. Our JAMB Biology syllabus breaks down the topics.
- Upload your O’level to CAPS: at a JAMB accredited CBT centre, or online where JAMB allows it, before SUMAS’s deadline.
- Apply for SUMAS screening: at sumas.edu.ng/apply or samp.sumas.edu.ng. Pay ₦2,000 with your JAMB number as narration and keep Nursing Science as your programme on both JAMB and SUMAS. Our SUMAS Post-UTME form guide covers each screen.
- Check your admission status: on efacility.jamb.gov.ng, go to Check Admission Status and Access my CAPS. Also check the SUMAS batch lists and confirm on SAMP. Our JAMB CAPS guide explains each message.
- Accept on CAPS: accept the offer and print your JAMB admission letter. If SUMAS offered you a different course, change it on JAMB within 3 days.
- Pay the acceptance fee: generate the ₦50,000 fee on eportal.sumas.edu.ng (NEW STUDENT, JAMB number and SAMP password) and pay it on the SUMAS Revenue Portal.
- Clear online and in person: submit the online clearance, then see your Faculty Officer with your documents. The medical report must come from the SUMAS University Medical Centre. Our SUMAS clearance guide has the full list.
Common mistakes Nursing applicants make
- Treating 150 as enough. Nursing filled before the supplementary round. Aim much higher.
- Accepting without asking about NMCN. The approval is not on public record. Ask in writing.
- A weak Chemistry or Physics grade. It drags your ranking down under any method that counts O’level.
- SUMAS as second choice, or no O’level on CAPS. SUMAS named both as reasons it did not process applications in 2026/2027.
- Paying agents. Every SUMAS payment goes through its Revenue Portal.
SUMAS Nursing cut off mark: frequently asked questions
Is 230 enough for Nursing in SUMAS? It gives you a fair chance, especially with strong grades in Biology, Chemistry and Physics. SUMAS has published no Nursing cut off, and the course filled in the main batches, so 240 or more is safer.
Is SUMAS Nursing approved by NMCN? SUMAS is not on NMCN’s list of approved schools uploaded in January 2026, and SUMAS has not published an NMCN approval. Its Nursing degree does have full NUC accreditation. Ask the admission office about NMCN status before you accept.
Can I use awaiting result for SUMAS Nursing? No. SUMAS needs your O’level result uploaded on JAMB CAPS by its deadline (15 August in 2026), and an awaiting result cannot be uploaded.
Does SUMAS accept two sittings for Nursing? Yes. Nursing Science accepts O’level results from not more than two sittings. Only Medicine and Surgery requires one sitting.
