SUMAS Cut-Off Mark for Applied Microbiology and Brewing 2027/2028: Requirements and Admission Guide

The SUMAS cut off mark for Applied Microbiology and Brewing in 2027/2028 is 150, and the fully accredited course was on the October 2026 supplementary list. See subjects, the Physics rule and admission steps.

The SUMAS cut off mark for Microbiology, offered as Applied Microbiology and Brewing, in 2026/2027 is 150 in the UTME. That is the general minimum the State University of Medical and Applied Sciences (SUMAS), Igbo-Eno, Enugu State, set for all programmes in its 2026/2027 Post-UTME notice, and 150 also applied in 2025/2026. The course appeared, as “Applied Microbiology”, on the SUMAS supplementary admission list in October 2026, which was open to candidates with 150 or more in the 2026 UTME.

2027/2028 update: SUMAS cut-off marks usually stay the same from one year to the next, so the figures on this page are what 2027/2028 candidates should plan with. They come from the latest official notice (2026/2027). If the 2027/2028 notice changes anything, we will update this page.

SUMAS has not published a departmental cut off for Applied Microbiology and Brewing in any year, and there is no published aggregate formula, merit list with scores, catchment list or ELDS list. On accreditation the news is good: Applied Microbiology and Brewing is one of the 15 SUMAS programmes that received full NUC accreditation after the 2025 exercise. Below are the verified figures, the subject rules (including the Physics credit many science candidates forget), a worked screening example, my safe-score advice and the admission steps.

The 150 is the minimum to be screened. A departmental cut off would be the lowest score actually admitted after screening, and SUMAS has never released one for this course. The general minimum is reviewed each year after JAMB’s policy meeting, so check the 2027/2028 SUMAS notice. You may see 160 for SUMAS on a private directory that also calls it a federal university; it is not a SUMAS figure.

Applied Microbiology on the 2027/2028 supplementary list

On 17 October 2026, Myschool and FreshNote reported that SUMAS had opened supplementary admission for programmes with places left. “Applied Microbiology” was on the list. SUMAS runs one microbiology degree, Applied Microbiology and Brewing, so the entry refers to this programme. I could not find the notice on the SUMAS website, so read the details as reported.

  • Who could apply: candidates with 150 or more in the 2026 UTME who chose SUMAS first but missed admission into their course, and candidates willing to change their first choice to SUMAS.
  • Other science programmes on the list: Biochemistry, Genetics and Biotechnology, ICT, Industrial Chemistry, Pure and Industrial Physics, Pharmacology and Human Physiology, plus Architecture, the six Engineering programmes, Health Administration and Hospital Management, Prosthetics and Orthotics, Dental Therapy and Dental Technology.
  • Not on the list: Medicine, Nursing, Pharmacy, Medical Laboratory Science, Radiography, Physiotherapy, Nutrition and Dietetics, Public Health, Human Anatomy, Computer Science and Quantity Surveying.
  • Closing date: none was reported.

Many candidates who wanted Medicine, Medical Laboratory Science or Pharmacy end up looking at microbiology. If that is you and you scored 150 or more in 2026, this list was your route into SUMAS this session.

Supplementary admission

No closing date was reported for the October 2026 SUMAS supplementary admission. If you want Applied Microbiology and Brewing this session, contact the SUMAS admissions office (08067390088 or admissionofficer@sumas.edu.ng) now, before the lists close.

Is Applied Microbiology and Brewing at SUMAS accredited?

Yes. SUMAS announced that the NUC granted full accreditation to 15 of its programmes after the exercise of 28 October to 3 December 2025, and Applied Microbiology and Brewing is on that list under this exact name. Biochemistry and Genetics and Biotechnology, the two closest courses, were also fully accredited.

If your goal is to work as a licensed scientist in a hospital diagnostic laboratory, that is Medical Laboratory Science, a different degree regulated by the Medical Laboratory Science Council of Nigeria (MLSCN). Applied Microbiology and Brewing leads mainly to industry, research and public health work.

UTME subjects and O’Level requirements for Applied Microbiology and Brewing

SUMAS follows the JAMB brochure. The table shows JAMB’s usual entry for Applied Microbiology and Brewing, as reproduced by Myschool, next to the SUMAS rule. Confirm the SUMAS line on the JAMB e-brochure when you register.

RequirementApplied Microbiology and Brewing
UTME subjectsUse of English, Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics
O’Level (JAMB brochure)Five credits in English Language, Mathematics, Chemistry, Physics, and Biology or Health Science
O’Level (SUMAS rule)Five credits including English Language, Mathematics and Physics, plus two other relevant subjects
SittingsMaximum of two
Direct Entry (SUMAS rule)At least second class lower or its equivalent in OND, HND or a first degree, cleared on JAMB e-Facility
Direct Entry (JAMB brochure)Two A Level passes in Biology and Chemistry; NCE merit in Biology and Chemistry; or ND/HND in Biology or Food Technology

Two things stand out:

  • Mathematics is the fourth UTME subject, not Physics. JAMB’s entry lists Mathematics, Chemistry and Biology. One university in the JAMB entry accepts Physics in place of Mathematics, but that waiver is not for SUMAS.
  • You still need a Physics credit at O’Level. Both JAMB’s entry and the SUMAS rule ask for it. Biology students who dropped Physics in SS2 often fall here.

For Direct Entry, the SUMAS notice speaks of OND, HND and first degree holders with at least a second class lower or equivalent. ND holders in Science Laboratory Technology or Food Technology should confirm their placement with SUMAS before applying.

Our JAMB Biology syllabus and JAMB Chemistry syllabus guides cover two of your UTME papers.

How SUMAS screening works for Applied Microbiology and Brewing

SUMAS called its 2026/2027 Post-UTME a screening exercise and published no written test or date. It has not explained how UTME scores and O’Level grades are combined. A later notice told some admitted candidates who skipped Post-UTME to register on SAMP, pay the screening fee and report to the ICT Unit for verification, which suggests screening on records. SUMAS has not confirmed this.

The 50/50 aggregate used by many Nigerian universities shows how the parts could combine. SUMAS has not published its formula; this is an illustration only.

  1. UTME part: UTME score ÷ 8, maximum 50 points.
  2. O’Level part: five relevant grades scored A1 = 10, B2 = 9, B3 = 8, C4 = 7, C5 = 6, C6 = 5, maximum 50 points.
  3. Aggregate: the sum, out of 100.

Ifeoma scored 188 in the UTME. Her WAEC result shows B2 in Biology, B3 in Chemistry, C4 in Mathematics, B3 in English Language and C6 in Physics.

PartWorkingPoints
UTME188 ÷ 823.5
O’Level9 + 8 + 7 + 8 + 537
Total23.5 + 3760.5 out of 100

Her C6 in Physics still counts as a credit, so she meets the subject rule. Under a method like this, lifting it to C4 would add two points, the same as 16 extra UTME marks.

How competitive is Applied Microbiology and Brewing at SUMAS?

Moderately. The course was reopened on the October 2026 supplementary list, so SUMAS still had places after its main screening. The health courses many microbiology applicants first wanted, such as Medicine, Medical Laboratory Science and Pharmacy, were not reopened.

SUMAS has not published a quota, catchment states or ELDS states. The 45% merit, 35% catchment and 20% ELDS split quoted online is a federal university guideline, and SUMAS, a state university, has not said it uses it.

My advice (not an official figure): a UTME score of 180 or above, with credits in English, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Biology at no more than two sittings, gives you a comfortable chance in Applied Microbiology and Brewing at SUMAS. Candidates closer to 150 could still be considered during the 2026/2027 supplementary exercise.

How to get admission into SUMAS Applied Microbiology and Brewing

  1. Get your JAMB profile code: text NIN, a space and your 11-digit NIN to 55019 or 66019 from the line linked to your NIN, then use the code to register for the UTME.
  2. Make SUMAS your first choice: choose State University of Medical and Applied Sciences, Igbo-Eno, and Applied Microbiology and Brewing. SUMAS screens first-choice candidates only. If you chose another school, do a JAMB change of institution; this also applies if you are switching to SUMAS for the supplementary exercise.
  3. Upload your O’Level on CAPS: make sure Physics is among the results on JAMB CAPS. The 2026 SUMAS deadline was 15 August.
  4. Meet the age rule: at least 16 years old by 30 September 2026.
  5. Register on the SUMAS portal: apply at sumas.edu.ng/apply or on samp.sumas.edu.ng, pay ₦2,000 with your JAMB registration number as the narration, and enter the same JAMB number, date of birth, state of origin and course as on CAPS. Only one application is allowed.
  6. Check your admission: watch the SUMAS batch lists, then log in to JAMB e-Facility, use Check Admission Status and Access my CAPS, and confirm on SAMP.
  7. Accept, and change course if needed: accept the offer on CAPS and print your JAMB admission letter. If SUMAS offers you Applied Microbiology and Brewing after you applied for another course, change your course on JAMB within three days, as the 2026/2027 notice required.
  8. Pay the acceptance fee: log in at eportal.sumas.edu.ng as NEW STUDENT with your JAMB number and SAMP password, generate the ₦50,000 acceptance fee and pay only through the SUMAS Revenue Portal.

The screening rules are in our SUMAS Post-UTME form 2026/2027 guide, and our SUMAS instructions to successful candidates post walks you through clearance. Our JAMB CAPS guide explains each CAPS status.

What you study in Applied Microbiology and Brewing

The programme studies microorganisms (bacteria, fungi, viruses and others) and how they are used or controlled in industry, health and the environment. The brewing side adds the science of malting, fermentation and beverage production. Early years cover biology, chemistry, mathematics, physics and general studies. Later courses typically include general and medical microbiology, microbial physiology and genetics, immunology, virology, mycology, food and industrial microbiology, environmental and public health microbiology, fermentation technology, malting and brewing science, quality control and biostatistics, with laboratory practicals throughout and a final-year research project. An industrial attachment (SIWES) is usual before the final year.

SUMAS has not published the duration. Similar B.Sc. programmes in Nigeria usually take four years for UTME entrants, so plan for that and confirm with the department. You study at the Igbo-Eno campus, Udenu Local Government Area, Enugu State, close to the SUMAS Teaching Hospital.

The only SUMAS fee schedule online is for 2022/2023, which charged Applied and Natural Sciences students ₦251,400. No 2026/2027 fees have been published, so treat it as a guide and add the ₦50,000 acceptance fee.

Career paths after Applied Microbiology and Brewing

Graduates work in breweries and beverage companies (fermentation, quality control, production), food and dairy processing, pharmaceutical manufacturing, water treatment, environmental and public health agencies, research institutes and agro-allied industries. Some move into regulatory work, sales of laboratory and industrial products, or postgraduate study in microbiology, biotechnology or public health.

Common mistakes Applied Microbiology applicants make

  • No Physics credit: both JAMB’s entry and the SUMAS rule need it.
  • Physics instead of Mathematics in the UTME: JAMB’s entry asks for Mathematics, Chemistry and Biology.
  • Confusing it with Medical Laboratory Science: they are different degrees with different careers and licensing.
  • A third sitting: SUMAS accepts no more than two.
  • Paying agents: all SUMAS payments go through the official portals.
