SUMAS Medical Laboratory Science Cut-Off Mark 2027/2028: B.MLS Requirements and Aggregate Guide

SUMAS requires 150 in the UTME to apply for Medical Laboratory Science (B.MLS) in 2027/2028, with no published departmental cut off. See the subjects, O’level rules, an aggregate example, a safe target score and accreditation status.

The SUMAS cut off mark for Medical Laboratory Science in 2026/2027 is 150 in the UTME. The State University of Medical and Applied Sciences (SUMAS), Igbo-Eno, set 150 as the minimum for all programmes in its 2026/2027 Post-UTME and Direct Entry notice, and it used the same figure in 2025/2026. You also needed SUMAS as first choice and five O’level credits, including English, Mathematics and Physics, from no more than two sittings.

2027/2028 update: SUMAS cut-off marks usually stay the same from one year to the next, so the figures on this page are what 2027/2028 candidates should plan with. They come from the latest official notice (2026/2027). If the 2027/2028 notice changes anything, we will update this page.

SUMAS has not released a departmental cut off for Medical Laboratory Science (B.MLS), and it has not published how it calculates an aggregate. What we do know is that MLS was not among the courses with places left when SUMAS opened supplementary admission in October 2026, so the competition is well above 150. This guide covers the B.MLS subject combination and O’level rules, how screening works, an aggregate example you can adapt to your own grades, a safe target score, accreditation and the admission steps.

The general cut off is a gate set before screening. The departmental cut off, the lowest score actually admitted into MLS, would only be known after ranking, and SUMAS has never released it. Its admission lists carry masked JAMB numbers under each course and no scores.

UTME subject combination and O’level for SUMAS MLS

JAMB’s usual combination for Medical Laboratory Science is Use of English, Biology, Chemistry and Physics. The brochure entry, as reproduced online, gives special remarks for a handful of universities, and SUMAS is not one of them. Confirm on the e-brochure on your JAMB profile before you register.

UTME subjectsUse of English, Biology, Chemistry, Physics
O’level creditsFive: English Language, Mathematics, Physics, plus two relevant subjects (Biology and Chemistry)

UTME score150 or above in the 2026 UTME
AgeAt least 16 by 30 September 2026
ChoiceSUMAS as first choice on JAMB CAPS
Direct EntryAt least second class lower, or the equivalent in OND or HND, in a related programme

A credit is C6 or better, and WAEC, NECO and NABTEB are all accepted. Chemistry and Biology matter most in MLS, since most of the degree is built on them.

Direct Entry into B.MLS

SUMAS sets one floor for all Direct Entry candidates outside Medicine: a second class lower or equivalent in an OND, HND or first degree. It does not say which diplomas count as related for MLS. Across Nigeria, the JAMB brochure’s general Direct Entry rule for MLS is A level passes in Physics, Chemistry and Biology or Zoology, and several universities also take laboratory technician certificates or related degrees. If you hold a Medical Laboratory Technician certificate or an ND in Science Laboratory Technology, ask SUMAS whether it accepts it before you register for Direct Entry. Your awarding institution must also clear you on JAMB e-Facility.

How SUMAS screening and the aggregate work for MLS

SUMAS published no written Post-UTME test for 2026/2027. Its screening was an online application: register at sumas.edu.ng/apply or the SAMP portal, pay ₦2,000 with your JAMB number as the narration, and submit your details. Admitted candidates who never did Post-UTME were later told to register on SAMP, pay and go to the ICT Unit for verification. That suggests screening on records. SUMAS has not explained the ranking.

What SUMAS checks:

  • UTME score of 150 or more in the 2026 UTME
  • SUMAS as your first choice
  • Five O’level credits uploaded to CAPS by SUMAS’s deadline (15 August 2026)
  • Matching JAMB registration number, date of birth, state of origin and programme on JAMB and the SUMAS portal
  • A single application per candidate

MLS aggregate example (illustration only)

Many Nigerian universities rank candidates by adding two halves: the UTME score divided by 8 (up to 50 points) and five O’level grades (A1 = 10, B2 = 9, B3 = 8, C4 = 7, C5 = 6, C6 = 5, up to 50 points). SUMAS has not said it uses this method. I use it here so you can see how much your grades can move you.

Chukwuebuka scored 226 in the UTME. His WAEC has B2 in Chemistry, B2 in Biology, B3 in Physics, C4 in Mathematics and C4 in English.

PartWorkingPoints
UTME226 ÷ 828.25
O’level9 + 9 + 8 + 7 + 740
Aggregate28.25 + 4068.25 out of 100

To see how to use this for yourself, work out your own two halves:

  1. Divide your UTME score by 8.
  2. Convert each of your five O’level grades to points and add them.
  3. Add the two numbers.

Under this method, every 8 marks in JAMB equal one grade step in one O’level subject. If Chukwuebuka had scored 250 with the same grades, his total would be 71.25; raising his two C4s to B3s instead would give him 70.25 without any extra JAMB marks. If you are still resitting WAEC or NECO, better science grades are worth chasing.

What score should you aim for in SUMAS MLS?

My advice, not a SUMAS figure. Medical Laboratory Science draws heavy demand across Nigeria, and at SUMAS it had no places left by the supplementary round. I would aim for 230 or more to feel safe, and treat 210 to 230 as a fair chance if your Chemistry and Biology grades are strong. Below 200, have a second course ready.

SUMAS has published no catchment or ELDS list, so do not count on your state of origin to lower the score you need.

If MLS does not work out, the related SUMAS programmes are Applied Microbiology and Brewing and Biochemistry, both of which were on the October 2026 supplementary list. Other Allied Health options with the same subjects are Nursing Science and Radiography and Radiation Science.

Accreditation: NUC and MLSCN

BodyPosition for SUMAS MLSSource
NUCFull accreditation, exercise of 28 October to 3 December 2025SUMAS NUC accreditation notice
MLSCNNo accreditation or approval publishedNo MLSCN or SUMAS notice found

Medical Laboratory Science is one of the 15 SUMAS programmes granted full NUC accreditation in the 2025 exercise. That covers the degree itself.

The Medical Laboratory Science Council of Nigeria (MLSCN) regulates the profession, and graduates register with it before they can practise as medical laboratory scientists. I could not find an MLSCN accreditation or approval for SUMAS’s programme, and SUMAS’s late 2025 notice said some professional bodies had not yet scheduled visits without naming them. That may only mean MLSCN has not visited yet, but you should ask.

Ask about MLSCN

SUMAS MLS has full NUC accreditation, but no MLSCN accreditation has been published. Before you accept an MLS offer, ask the SUMAS admission office (08067390088, admissionofficer@sumas.edu.ng) about the programme’s MLSCN status and student induction.

Studying Medical Laboratory Science at SUMAS

B.MLS at SUMAS is in the Faculty of Allied Health Sciences, on the Igbo-Eno campus in Udenu Local Government Area, Enugu State. The degree usually takes 5 years in Nigeria. SUMAS has not published a course outline online; a typical NUC B.MLS curriculum covers:

  • Basic medical sciences in the early years: anatomy, physiology and biochemistry
  • Medical microbiology and parasitology
  • Haematology and blood transfusion science
  • Chemical pathology (clinical chemistry)
  • Histopathology and cytology
  • Immunology and molecular diagnostics
  • Laboratory management, quality control and safety
  • Hospital laboratory placements and a final year project

The 2022/2023 fee schedule, the only one on the SUMAS website, put Pharmacy and Allied Health Sciences at ₦301,400. Your portal invoice may be higher and is the figure you pay.

Careers in Medical Laboratory Science

A licensed medical laboratory scientist runs the tests doctors depend on. Graduates work in:

  • Hospital laboratories, public and private, often specialising in one of the areas above
  • Blood banks and transfusion services
  • Public health and disease surveillance laboratories
  • Research institutes and universities, after a master’s degree
  • Pharmaceutical, diagnostics and laboratory equipment companies
  • Their own private diagnostic laboratories, subject to MLSCN rules

Admission steps for SUMAS Medical Laboratory Science

  1. Get your JAMB profile code: text NIN, a space and your 11-digit NIN to 55019 or 66019 from the number linked to your NIN.
  2. Register for the UTME: choose SUMAS first and Medical Laboratory Science as your course, with Use of English, Biology, Chemistry and Physics. The JAMB Chemistry syllabus is worth studying closely for this course.
  3. Upload your O’level to CAPS: at a JAMB accredited CBT centre, or online where JAMB allows it, before SUMAS’s deadline.
  4. Register for SUMAS screening: at sumas.edu.ng/apply or samp.sumas.edu.ng, pay ₦2,000 with your JAMB number as the narration, and keep the same programme on JAMB and the SUMAS portal. See the SUMAS Post-UTME form guide.
  5. Check your status: log in at efacility.jamb.gov.ng, open Check Admission Status, then Access my CAPS, and check the SUMAS batch lists. Our JAMB CAPS guide explains every status.
  6. Accept on CAPS: accept and print your JAMB admission letter. If SUMAS offered you another course, change it on JAMB within 3 days, as the 2026/2027 Batch 2 notice required.
  7. Pay the ₦50,000 acceptance fee: generate it on eportal.sumas.edu.ng (NEW STUDENT, JAMB number and SAMP password) and pay on the SUMAS Revenue Portal.
  8. Complete clearance: do the online clearance, then physical clearance with your Faculty Officer. The SUMAS clearance guide lists every document.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Assuming 150 is enough. MLS filled before the supplementary round.
  • Credit missing in Physics. SUMAS makes Physics compulsory at O’level for every programme.
  • SUMAS as second choice, or no O’level on CAPS. SUMAS gave both as reasons it did not process applications in 2026/2027.
  • Paying anyone outside the Revenue Portal. SUMAS warns against agents and personal accounts.

SUMAS MLS cut off mark: frequently asked questions

Is 220 enough for Medical Laboratory Science in SUMAS? It gives you a fair chance, especially with strong Chemistry and Biology grades. SUMAS has published no MLS cut off, and the course filled before the supplementary round, so 230 or more is safer.

Is SUMAS Medical Laboratory Science accredited? It has full NUC accreditation from the 2025 exercise. No MLSCN accreditation has been published, so ask SUMAS about it before you accept.

Can I use awaiting result for SUMAS MLS? No. Your O’level result has to be uploaded on JAMB CAPS by SUMAS’s deadline (15 August in 2026), and a result that is not out cannot be uploaded.

How much is the SUMAS Post-UTME form for MLS? ₦2,000 for 2026/2027, the same for every programme. The window closed on 4 October 2026 after an extension from 31 July.
