GOUNI Political Science Cut-Off Mark 2027/2028 and Admission Requirements

GOUNI’s cut-off mark for Political Science is 150 and the form is free. See the JAMB subjects, the Mathematics credit rule, Direct Entry, a target score and the December 2024 NUC full accreditation.

The GOUNI Political Science cut-off mark is 150 in the UTME. Godfrey Okoye University, Enugu, lists 150 as the minimum JAMB score for “other programmes” in 2026/2027, and Political Science is one of them. That matches JAMB’s national minimum for universities, and GOUNI charges nothing for the application form.

2027/2028 update: GOUNI cut-off marks usually stay the same from one year to the next, so the figures on this page are what 2027/2028 candidates should plan with. They come from the latest official notice (2026/2027). If the 2027/2028 notice changes anything, we will update this page.

On JAMB, choose Political Science. JAMB’s course list for GOUNI also carries “Political Science and International Relations” and “International Relations”, and the three are easy to mix up on the registration screen. GOUNI’s own 2026/2027 list has Political Science and International Relations as two separate degrees, with no combined course, so pick the plain Political Science entry.

Political Science is also the one GOUNI social science course with a recent, public NUC result: full accreditation at 95.41 percent after a visit in December 2024. Below you will find that result, a target score, the subjects, how GOUNI admits, worked examples, and what the department teaches.

Is 150 enough for Political Science at GOUNI?

Yes, by GOUNI’s published rule. Only Medicine and Surgery and Law (200 each) and Nursing (180) sit above the general 150 line. AbsTechConnect reported the same figures on 24 May 2026, though it is a blog.

GOUNI does not publish merit lists or departmental cut-offs. In my judgement, a 150 candidate with Government and a Mathematics credit should have a fair chance, because GOUNI admits on a rolling basis through its online form. The risk grows the later you apply in the cycle.

How GOUNI compares for Political Science in Enugu

University2026/2027 figure for Political ScienceType
Godfrey Okoye University (GOUNI)150Private
University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN)160 to apply for screeningFederal
Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT)180 (Political Science is in ESUT’s 180 band)State

UNN’s figure is from its screening notice of 13 July 2026 and ESUT’s from its Post-UTME advert of 4 July 2026. See our UNN Political Science guide and ESUT Political Science guide for those schools. A candidate with 165 who chose ESUT first would miss ESUT’s band but clear GOUNI comfortably, which is why GOUNI is a common change of institution destination.

Safe target score for GOUNI Political Science (my advice)

Your UTME scoreMy read for GOUNI Political Science
Below 150Not eligible at any Nigerian university in 2026/2027
150 to 164Eligible; apply early with Government and a Mathematics credit in place
165 to 179Comfortable
180 and aboveStrong, and it keeps ESUT’s band within reach as well

For the 2027 UTME I would aim for 165 or more. It gives you a margin over GOUNI’s line, clears UNN’s 160 screening mark, and costs you nothing extra in preparation if Government is already your strongest subject.

UTME subject combination and O’level for GOUNI Political Science

RequirementPolitical Science at GOUNI
UTME subjects (JAMB rule)Use of English, Government or History, and two other Social Science or Arts subjects
GOUNI UTME remarkNone
O’level (JAMB rule)Five credits in Government or History, English Language and three other subjects, with a pass in Mathematics
GOUNI O’level remark in the brochureCredit in Mathematics (listed as “GO” with ABUAD, OOU, UNICAL, OAU, LASU and EKSU)
GOUNI’s own curriculum (2023 to 2028 handbook)Five credits including Government or History, English Language and Mathematics, in not more than two sittings
GOUNI form page (all courses)Five credits including English and Mathematics
JUPEB combination at GOUNIGovernment, Literature in English, and CRS or Economics

Which UTME subjects should you write?

Government is the safe anchor. History is allowed under JAMB’s base rule, but several universities (UNN and UNICAL among them) refuse History in place of Government at O’level, so Government keeps more doors open. For the other two, Economics and Literature in English or Economics and CRS both fit the base rule and GOUNI’s JUPEB combination.

If you might apply to a school such as OAU, AAU or Bowen later, note that they demand Mathematics as a UTME subject for Political Science. GOUNI does not, so English, Government, Economics and Literature is fine here.

The Mathematics credit

JAMB’s base rule for Political Science needs only a pass in Mathematics. GOUNI asks for a credit, in its brochure remark, its curriculum and its form page. A D7 or E8 is not enough at GOUNI. Two sittings are allowed, so you can combine WAEC and NECO to cover the five credits.

Direct Entry into Political Science at GOUNI

SourceWhat it says about Direct Entry
JAMB brochure (base rule)Two A-level passes including Government or History
JAMB brochure, GOUNI remarkA-level passes in Government and one of Economics, Mathematics or Geography; IJMB is accepted
GOUNI curriculum (three-year programme)Five O’level credits including Government or History, English and Mathematics, plus credit passes in three relevant subjects at GCE A-level or equivalent
GOUNI admission form pageApply with the current JAMB Direct Entry form

The GOUNI remark and the curriculum line up on Government at A-level (or IJMB) plus an economics, mathematics or geography subject. GOUNI’s JUPEB programme is another route, with Government, Literature and CRS or Economics. Diploma holders are not mentioned in either GOUNI source, so ND or NCE candidates should e-mail admissions before buying a DE form.

How GOUNI admission works for Political Science

GOUNI’s 2026/2027 admission page describes an online application with a decision by e-mail within three working days. There is no written Post-UTME test or interview for undergraduates on that page, and no closing date.

Worked examples for Political Science applicants

With no published aggregate formula, the check is your UTME score against 150 and your O’level against GOUNI’s credits.

Obinna scored 163 in English, Government, Economics and CRS. He chose ESUT first. His WAEC from one sitting has C4 in English Language, B3 in Government, C5 in Mathematics, B2 in Economics and C6 in CRS.

  1. ESUT: 163 is below ESUT’s 180 band for Political Science, so he will not be considered there.
  2. GOUNI eligibility: 163 minus 150 = 13. He is 13 marks above GOUNI’s minimum.
  3. O’level check: credits in English, Mathematics and Government, with Economics and CRS. He meets GOUNI’s rule.
  4. What I would advise: do a JAMB change of institution to GOUNI, fill the free form, and watch both his e-mail and CAPS.

Ada scored 185 in English, History, Literature and CRS and has a credit in History but only a pass in Government and a D7 in Mathematics. Her UTME subjects fit JAMB’s base rule because History is allowed. Her O’level is the problem: GOUNI needs a Mathematics credit. GOUNI’s form page applies the Mathematics credit rule to every course, so switching to another GOUNI course will not fix it. I would tell her to resit Mathematics in the next GCE or NECO series and get the result onto CAPS before GOUNI’s window closes. With a credit added, her 185 makes her one of the stronger applicants.

How to apply for Political Science at GOUNI

  1. Get your JAMB profile code: text NIN, a space and your 11-digit NIN to 55019 or 66019 from the phone line linked to your NIN.
  2. Register the right course: pick Godfrey Okoye University and the course exactly as JAMB lists it, Political Science, with the correct UTME subjects.
  3. Fix your choice if needed: GOUNI says candidates who did not choose it first must do a JAMB change of institution to GOUNI. Our change of institution guide walks you through it.
  4. Upload your O’level to CAPS: do this at a JAMB-accredited centre, and check that every grade shows correctly on your e-Facility profile.
  5. Fill GOUNI’s online form: open the Fill Admission Form page on gouni.edu.ng and apply for Political Science. Use an e-mail address you check daily, because the decision comes by e-mail.
  6. Form fee: free for Political Science. Anyone who charges you for this form is not GOUNI.
  7. Wait for the e-mail: GOUNI says it replies within three working days of submission.
  8. Accept on CAPS: log in at efacility.jamb.gov.ng, open Check Admission Status, then Access my CAPS, and accept the offer. Our JAMB CAPS guide explains each status.
  9. Pay fees the right way: after an offer, GOUNI asks students outside Medicine, Nursing and Law to pay acceptance, tuition, ICT and other fees. Use only GOUNI’s official online platform.

Warning

GOUNI tells applicants to pay only through the university’s official online payment platform and says money paid into a personal account is at the payer’s own risk. Nobody can sell you a GOUNI admission slot. Every genuine offer shows on JAMB CAPS.

For the 2026/2027 cycle, JAMB set 30 November 2026 as the admission deadline for private universities, and GOUNI repeated that date in its news post of 12 May 2026. That window runs until 30 November 2026. JAMB has not announced the 2027/2028 dates yet; they normally come after the UTME, so 2027 candidates should watch for them then.

Studying Political Science at GOUNI

Political Science at GOUNI is a B.Sc. in the Faculty of Management and Social Sciences: four years through UTME and three through Direct Entry. The department’s handbook for 2023 to 2028 builds the degree around five areas: political theory, comparative politics, political economy, public administration and international relations. It follows NUC’s core curriculum (CCMAS) for the social sciences.

What you study, level by level

LevelExamples of courses in GOUNI’s curriculum
100Introduction to Political Science, Introduction to African Politics, Organisation of Government, Nigerian Legal System, Nigerian Constitutional Development
200Nigerian Government and Politics, Introduction to Political Analysis, Political Ideas, Foundations of Political Economy, Introduction to International Relations, Introduction to Public Administration
300History of Political Thought, Political Behaviour, Public Policy Analysis, Comparative Federalism, Statistics for Political Science, Theories of International Relations, Democratisation Studies
400Civil-Military Relations, Nigerian Local Government System, Nigerian Foreign Policy, International Law and Organization, Political Parties and Pressure Groups, Research Project

GOUNI’s own GOU-POL and GOU-IRE courses give the degree a South East slant: Politics in Igbo Land, Election Management in South East Nigeria (elective), Budget Administration in Enugu State, Nigerian Security Institutions, Legislative Studies I and II, Gender Politics in Nigeria, Political Economy of South East Nigeria, and the African Union in World Politics. The Legislative Studies courses carry practical hours, and the final-year research project (POL 407) carries 180 hours. The handbook mentions no SIWES.

Statistics for Political Science sits at 300 level, which is part of why GOUNI wants a Mathematics credit at entry.

Accreditation

NUC’s accreditation report entry 7604 names “Godfrey Okoye University, Ugwuomu-Nike, Enugu State” and gives B.Sc. Political Science full accreditation with 95.41 percent, after a visit from 10 to 12 December 2024. Full accreditation normally runs for five years, so the programme should not face another NUC visit until about 2029. GOUNI’s accreditation page also says all its programmes are NUC accredited. Of the five GOUNI social science courses I checked, this is the only one with a NUC result newer than 2021.

Careers after Political Science

Graduates go into the civil service at federal, state and local levels, legislative offices and political parties, the electoral commission, NGOs and development agencies, journalism and public affairs, and research. Many use it as a first degree before law, a master’s in international relations or public policy, or the foreign service.

Mistakes Political Science applicants make at GOUNI

  • Choosing the wrong JAMB entry: “Political Science and International Relations” is on JAMB’s GOUNI list but not on GOUNI’s 2026/2027 list of programmes.
  • A Mathematics pass instead of a credit: JAMB’s base rule accepts a pass; GOUNI does not.
  • No Government or History in the UTME: JAMB makes one of them compulsory.
  • Leaving GOUNI as second choice: GOUNI asks for a change of institution.
  • O’level missing on CAPS: JAMB cannot process the admission without it.

If you need to switch courses on JAMB, see our JAMB change of course guide. Writing again in 2027? Check when JAMB 2027 registration starts.
