GOUNI Sociology Cut-Off Mark 2027/2028 and Admission Requirements

GOUNI’s cut-off mark for Sociology is 150 and the form is free. See the JAMB subjects, the Mathematics and social science credits GOUNI wants, Direct Entry, a target score and the NUC position.

The GOUNI Sociology cut-off mark is 150 in the UTME. Godfrey Okoye University, Enugu, publishes 150 as the 2026/2027 minimum JAMB score for “other programmes”, and Sociology is in that group. It matches JAMB’s national minimum for universities, and the GOUNI form for Sociology costs nothing.

2027/2028 update: GOUNI cut-off marks usually stay the same from one year to the next, so the figures on this page are what 2027/2028 candidates should plan with. They come from the latest official notice (2026/2027). If the 2027/2028 notice changes anything, we will update this page.

Register it on JAMB as Sociology. That is the name on JAMB’s course list for GOUNI, and GOUNI’s degree is a B.Sc. Sociology, not the combined Sociology and Anthropology you find at UNN and ESUT. The course appears on GOUNI’s 2026/2027 list of available programmes and was among the GOUNI programmes reported to have full NUC accreditation in 2021. That accreditation cycle is now due for renewal.

This guide gives the official figure, my target score, the UTME and O’level subjects (with the Mathematics credit GOUNI adds), how GOUNI admits, two worked examples, and what GOUNI’s curriculum contains, including several courses you will only find there.

Is 150 enough for Sociology at GOUNI?

Yes, by GOUNI’s published rule. Medicine and Surgery (200), Law (200) and Nursing (180) are the only courses above the general 150 line. AbsTechConnect repeated the figures on 24 May 2026; it is a blog, and GOUNI’s own page is the source I rely on.

GOUNI publishes no merit list. My judgement is that a 150 candidate with Mathematics and Government or Economics credits has a fair chance at Sociology, and that applying early in the cycle matters more than a few extra marks at a school that admits on a rolling basis.

How GOUNI compares for Sociology in Enugu

UniversityCourse name2026/2027 figure
Godfrey Okoye University (GOUNI)Sociology150
University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN)Sociology and Anthropology160 to apply for screening
Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT)Sociology/Anthropology160

UNN’s figure is from its screening notice of 13 July 2026 and ESUT’s from its Post-UTME advert of 4 July 2026. See our UNN Sociology and Anthropology guide and ESUT Sociology and Anthropology guide. Candidates who score between 150 and 159 miss both public universities but still qualify at GOUNI.

Safe target score for GOUNI Sociology (my advice)

Your UTME scoreMy read for GOUNI Sociology
Below 150Not eligible at any Nigerian university in 2026/2027
150 to 164Eligible; a fair chance with the right O’level
165 to 189Comfortable
190 and aboveStrong, with UNN and ESUT well within reach

For the 2027 UTME I would aim for 165 or more. That clears the 160 UNN and ESUT used in 2026 and gives a cushion at GOUNI if its general line moves. GOUNI is private, so no catchment or state quota applies.

UTME subject combination and O’level for GOUNI Sociology

RequirementSociology at GOUNI
UTME subjects (JAMB rule)Use of English and three Social Science or Arts subjects
GOUNI UTME remarkNone
O’level (JAMB rule)Five credits in Government or History, English Language and three other subjects, with a pass in Mathematics
GOUNI O’level remark in the brochureFive credits including English, Mathematics, History or Government or Economics, and two Science, Arts or Social Science subjects
GOUNI’s own curriculum (Sept 2023)Five credits including Mathematics, English Language, and Economics, Geography or Government, plus two others, in not more than two sittings
GOUNI form page (all courses)Five credits including English and Mathematics
JUPEB combination at GOUNIGovernment, Literature in English, and CRS or Economics

Which three UTME subjects should you write?

JAMB’s base rule is broad: any three Social Science or Arts subjects, and GOUNI adds no UTME remark. I would write Government, Economics and either Literature in English or CRS. That fits JAMB’s rule, mirrors GOUNI’s JUPEB combination, and also works for UNN and ESUT’s Sociology and Anthropology if you keep them in view. Several universities on the brochure page (AAUA, ABU, Bayero and others) want Government or History named, so including Government costs you nothing.

Mathematics is accepted as a UTME subject by some schools for Sociology (UNIPORT, AAU and UNILAG are named), but GOUNI is not among them. Keep to Arts and Social Science subjects.

The O’level: Mathematics plus a social science

JAMB’s base line needs only a pass in Mathematics. GOUNI wants a credit in Mathematics and English, plus a credit in a social science. The brochure remark accepts History, Government or Economics, while the curriculum names Economics, Geography or Government. A credit in Government or Economics satisfies both, so make sure you have one of those. Two sittings are allowed under the curriculum.

Direct Entry into Sociology at GOUNI

SourceWhat it says about Direct Entry
JAMB brochure (base rule)Two A-level passes including Government or History
JAMB brochure, GOUNI remarkA B.Sc., B.A. or HND in any discipline
GOUNI curriculum (three-year programme)Five credits with at least two at advanced level, including English Language, Mathematics and one of Economics, Geography or Government
GOUNI admission form pageApply with the current JAMB Direct Entry form

So graduates and HND holders in any field fit the brochure remark, and A-level or JUPEB candidates with Economics, Geography or Government fit the curriculum. ND and NCE holders are not named in either GOUNI source; e-mail GOUNI admissions before buying a DE form on those. Direct Entry students start at 200 level and need at least 90 credit units to graduate, against 120 for UTME entrants.

How GOUNI admission works for Sociology

GOUNI’s 2026/2027 admission page describes an online application followed by an e-mailed decision within three working days. It mentions no written Post-UTME test or interview for undergraduates, and gives no closing date.

Worked examples for Sociology applicants

GOUNI publishes no aggregate formula, so the check is your UTME score against 150 and your O’level against GOUNI’s credits.

Ebuka scored 155 in English, Government, Economics and CRS, with UNN as first choice. His WAEC (one sitting) has C5 in English Language, C6 in Mathematics, B3 in Government, C4 in Economics and B2 in CRS.

  1. UNN: 155 is below UNN’s 160 screening mark, so UNN is out for this cycle.
  2. GOUNI eligibility: 155 minus 150 = 5. He clears GOUNI’s minimum.
  3. O’level check: credits in English and Mathematics, plus Government and Economics. He meets both the brochure remark and the curriculum.
  4. What I would advise: change institution to GOUNI on JAMB at once, fill the free form, and accept on CAPS when the offer appears. With only 5 marks to spare, speed matters more than anything else.

Ngozi scored 182 in English, Literature in English, CRS and History. Her UTME subjects are fine for Sociology. Her WAEC has credits in English, Mathematics, Literature, CRS and History, but she has only a pass in Government and did not take Economics or Geography. History satisfies the brochure remark, but the curriculum’s list (Economics, Geography or Government) leaves her out. I would tell her to e-mail GOUNI admissions with her result before applying, and to consider GOUNI English and Literary Studies or History and International Studies, which suit her subjects better.

How to apply for Sociology at GOUNI

  1. Get your JAMB profile code: text NIN, a space and your 11-digit NIN to 55019 or 66019 from the phone line linked to your NIN.
  2. Register the right course: pick Godfrey Okoye University and the course exactly as JAMB lists it, Sociology, with the correct UTME subjects.
  3. Fix your choice if needed: GOUNI says candidates who did not choose it first must do a JAMB change of institution to GOUNI. Our change of institution guide walks you through it.
  4. Upload your O’level to CAPS: do this at a JAMB-accredited centre, and check that every grade shows correctly on your e-Facility profile.
  5. Fill GOUNI’s online form: open the Fill Admission Form page on gouni.edu.ng and apply for Sociology. Use an e-mail address you check daily, because the decision comes by e-mail.
  6. Form fee: free for Sociology. Anyone who charges you for this form is not GOUNI.
  7. Wait for the e-mail: GOUNI says it replies within three working days of submission.
  8. Accept on CAPS: log in at efacility.jamb.gov.ng, open Check Admission Status, then Access my CAPS, and accept the offer. Our JAMB CAPS guide explains each status.
  9. Pay fees the right way: after an offer, GOUNI asks students outside Medicine, Nursing and Law to pay acceptance, tuition, ICT and other fees. Use only GOUNI’s official online platform.

Warning

GOUNI tells applicants to pay only through the university’s official online payment platform and says money paid into a personal account is at the payer’s own risk. Nobody can sell you a GOUNI admission slot. Every genuine offer shows on JAMB CAPS.

For the 2026/2027 cycle, JAMB set 30 November 2026 as the admission deadline for private universities, and GOUNI repeated that date in its news post of 12 May 2026. That window runs until 30 November 2026. JAMB has not announced the 2027/2028 dates yet; they normally come after the UTME, so 2027 candidates should watch for them then.

Studying Sociology at GOUNI

Sociology at GOUNI is a B.Sc. in the Faculty of Management and Social Sciences, four years through UTME and three through Direct Entry. The department’s curriculum (September 2023, based on NUC’s core curriculum) carries 18, 37, 32 and 29 credit units across the four levels and ends with a six-unit research project.

What you study, level by level

LevelExamples of courses in GOUNI’s curriculum
100Introduction to Sociology I and II, Introduction to Anthropology, Introduction to African Societies and Culture, Introduction to Psychology, Elements of Scientific Thought
200History of Social Thought, Social Psychology, Elements of Social Work, Gender and Society, Sociology of the Family, Structure of the Nigerian Society, Social Change and Social Problems
300Methods for Social Research and Statistics, Social Inequality, Sociology of Crime and Delinquency, Political Sociology, Formal Organisations
400Classical and Contemporary Sociological Theories, Regional Ethnography, Models in Sociological Analysis, Sociology of Development, Research Project

Introduction to Anthropology sits at 100 level, so you get some anthropology even though the degree title is Sociology alone.

GOUNI’s own GOU-SOC courses are where the degree becomes local. They include Sociology of Mass Communication, Sociology of the Igbo Apprenticeship System, Sociology of Contemporary Youth Culture, Sociology of Education, Sociology of Internally Displaced Persons, Sociology of Security Management in Enugu State, Sociology of Neo-pagan Movements, Sociology of the Aged in Igbo Land, Rural Sociology, Health Sociology, Urbanization and Labour Migration, Sociology of Industry and Sociology of Food in Enugu State. Electives include Sociology of Domestic Violence, Patriarchy System in Igbo Land, Sociology of Non-Governmental Organizations, and Community Development and Foreign Aids.

The curriculum does not include SIWES. The Methods for Social Research and Statistics course at 300 level (four units) is the main reason GOUNI asks for a Mathematics credit.

Accreditation

Myschool reported on 9 August 2021 that Sociology was one of 13 GOUNI programmes given full NUC accreditation. Full accreditation normally lasts five years, so the programme is now due for re-accreditation. I found no newer NUC result for it: NUC’s online results PDF stops before universities starting with G, and no NUC report page for GOUNI Sociology came up in searches. GOUNI’s accreditation page says all its programmes have NUC accreditation, without dates. Ask GOUNI admissions to confirm the current status in writing before you pay acceptance.

Careers after Sociology

Sociology graduates work in social research and survey firms, NGOs and development agencies, social welfare and community development departments, human resources, correctional and security services, and the civil service. The GOUNI electives on NGOs, displaced persons and community development point straight at the humanitarian and development sector in the South East. Many graduates take a master’s in sociology, social work or development studies.

Mistakes Sociology applicants make at GOUNI

  • Registering Sociology and Anthropology: that is UNN and ESUT’s course; GOUNI’s JAMB entry is Sociology.
  • A Mathematics pass instead of a credit: GOUNI wants a credit.
  • No Government, Economics or Geography credit: GOUNI’s curriculum names them.
  • Leaving GOUNI as second choice: GOUNI asks for a change of institution.
  • O’level missing on CAPS: JAMB cannot process the admission without it.

If you need to switch courses on JAMB, see our JAMB change of course guide. Writing again in 2027? Check when JAMB 2027 registration starts.
