The CCU English and Literary Studies cut-off mark is 150 in the UTME, the minimum JAMB fixed for every Nigerian university at its 2026 policy meeting. Coal City University, Enugu has not published a separate departmental cut-off for English and Literary Studies, and it was not among the universities that declared their own figure at that meeting. If you score 150 or more, register the right subjects and hold the O’level credits listed below, you are eligible to be considered.
2027/2028 update: CCU cut-off marks usually stay the same from one year to the next, so the figures on this page are what 2027/2028 candidates should plan with. They come from the latest official notice (2026/2027). If the 2027/2028 notice changes anything, we will update this page.
English and Literary Studies is on JAMB’s course list for Coal City University under the name English and Literary Studies, and CCU’s own Faculty of Arts, Social and Management Sciences page lists it among the faculty’s degree programmes. It is a current CCU course you can choose on your JAMB form. The NUC side needs a closer look, which I explain further down. Below you will find the subject combination, the O’level rule that trips up many arts students, what CCU has and has not said about screening, a worked example, a safe target score and the CAPS steps.

CCU English and Literary Studies cut-off history
| Session | Figure | What it is | Status |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2026/2027 | 150 | JAMB national minimum for universities | Official (JAMB, 11 May 2026) |
| 2026/2027 | Not published | CCU’s own figure for English and Literary Studies | CCU did not declare one |
| 2025/2026 | 150 | JAMB national minimum for universities | Reported by Nairametrics, 8 July 2025 |
| 2025/2026 | Not published | CCU’s own figure | None found |
A blog, AbsTechConnect, wrote in May 2026 that CCU’s cut-off is 150. That matches the national minimum, but the blog cites no CCU document, so read it as a repeat of JAMB’s floor. Ignore any website that quotes a higher “official” CCU English cut-off; CCU has not released one.
Safe target score for English and Literary Studies at CCU (my advice)
CCU does not publish the lowest score it admitted, so the table below is my judgement as an admissions adviser, not a CCU rule. Private universities in Enugu tend to admit close to the national minimum, and English is not usually an oversubscribed course at CCU’s size. The NUC quota for each programme is the real ceiling.
| Your UTME score | My read for CCU English and Literary Studies |
|---|---|
| Below 150 | Not eligible through UTME this session; consider CCU’s JUPEB route |
| 150 to 164 | Eligible; a fair chance if your O’level is complete and you apply early |
| 165 to 189 | Comfortable |
| 190 and above | Strong; UNN and ESUT (160 each) are also open to you |
For a 2027 candidate I would aim for at least 165, with good grades in English Language and Literature in English.
UTME subject combination and O’level for English and Literary Studies at CCU
The JAMB brochure entry for English and Literary Studies carries no special remark for CCU, so the general rules apply to you.
| Requirement | English and Literary Studies at CCU |
|---|---|
| JAMB course name to register | English and Literary Studies (Coal City University) |
| UTME subjects | Use of English, Literature in English, one other Arts subject, and one more Arts or Social Science subject |
| O’level | Five credits including English Language and Literature in English |
| Exams accepted | WAEC, NECO or NABTEB (CCU has not published its own list) |
| Sittings | Not stated by CCU |
| Direct Entry | Two A-level passes including Literature in English and one other Arts subject |
Choosing your UTME subjects
Literature in English is the one subject you cannot leave out. After that, the safest combination for most candidates is English, Literature in English, Government and CRS, or Literature with History and Government. CRS, IRS, History, French and Nigerian languages all count as Arts subjects. Economics and Government count as Social Sciences. If you are also thinking of Mass Communication or International Relations as a backup, Government is the subject that keeps those doors open.
The Mathematics question
JAMB’s general O’level rule for this course names English Language and Literature in English and does not name Mathematics. CCU has not put a course-by-course O’level list online that I could open. Several universities add a Mathematics pass for English (UNIHEZ and FUOYE, for example), and most private universities expect at least a pass. My advice: have a credit in Mathematics if you can, and a pass at the very least, and ask the admissions office if your Mathematics grade is below C6.
Direct Entry
A Direct Entry candidate needs two A-level passes, one of them Literature in English and the other an Arts subject. JUPEB and IJMB results are the common routes. CCU itself advertised JUPEB, IJMB and pre-degree forms for 2026/2027, so a student who missed the UTME score can enter through its JUPEB programme and come in at 200 level after passing.
How CCU screens English and Literary Studies applicants
CCU has not published its 2026/2027 screening details in any source I could reach. Here is what is known and what is not.
| Detail | What is known for 2026/2027 |
|---|---|
| Advert | CCU invited applications for its undergraduate programmes (Myschool reprint, 18 May 2026) |
| Applicant groups | UTME, Direct Entry and transfer candidates (AbsTechConnect, May 2026) |
| Portal | portal.ccu.edu.ng |
| Form fee | ₦2,000 according to AbsTechConnect; not confirmed by CCU |
| Test, date and format | Not published |
| Aggregate formula | Not published |
| Other routes | JUPEB, IJMB and pre-degree forms advertised for 2026/2027 |
Worked example (illustrative)
CCU has not published an aggregate formula. What matters is how far you are above the minimum and above my target, and whether your O’level is complete.
Take Adaeze, who scored 172 in the UTME with English, Literature, Government and CRS. Her WAEC (one sitting) has B3 in English Language, B2 in Literature in English, C4 in Mathematics, C5 in Government, B3 in CRS and C6 in Civic Education.
- Eligibility: 172 minus 150 = 22 above JAMB’s minimum.
- Against my target: 172 minus 165 = 7 above it.
- O’level check: English Language and Literature both at credit, plus at least three other credits and a Mathematics credit. She qualifies.
- Next step: apply on the CCU portal early, upload her O’level to CAPS and accept quickly once CCU proposes her.
Now take Obinna, who scored 158 but has only a pass (D7) in Literature in English. His score is fine, but the missing Literature credit fails the O’level rule, and no UTME score fixes that. He should either rewrite Literature in a NECO or WAEC GCE sitting or choose a course that does not need it.
Admission odds and advice
- The score is rarely the obstacle at CCU: with a 150 floor and moderate demand, missing documents cause more failures than low scores.
- Literature in English is mandatory twice: once in the UTME and once at O’level credit level.
- Make CCU your first choice: a university normally recommends candidates who chose it first. If you chose another school, do a JAMB change of institution before CCU starts proposing names.
- Know the dates: JAMB set 30 November 2026 as the 2026/2027 admission deadline for private universities, and the overall 2026/2027 admission exercise runs until 31 December 2026.
Who CCU English and Literary Studies suits
I would recommend it to a candidate who scored between 150 and 160, loves reading and writing, and wants to stay in Enugu. Below 160 the public options at UNN and ESUT are shut, while CCU’s floor is 150. If you scored 180 or more and fees are a concern, I would try UNN or ESUT first, mainly because they cost less. Whichever school you pick, ask CCU about the NUC re-accreditation point below before paying.
How to apply for English and Literary Studies at CCU, step by step
- Get your JAMB profile code: send NIN, a space and your 11-digit NIN to 55019 or 66019 from the phone line linked to your NIN.
- Register the UTME correctly: pick Coal City University and the course named “English and Literary Studies”, with English, Literature in English and your two other Arts or Social Science subjects.
- Upload your O’level to CAPS: do it at a JAMB-accredited centre as soon as your WAEC, NECO or NABTEB result is out. CCU cannot propose you without it.
- Fill the CCU form: go to portal.ccu.edu.ng, generate the invoice, pay the fee the portal shows and print your form.
- Watch for screening: follow the portal and ccu.edu.ng for dates, since none have been published.
- Accept on CAPS: log in at efacility.jamb.gov.ng, open Check Admission Status, then Access my CAPS, and accept the CCU offer. JAMB gives four weeks to accept. Our JAMB CAPS guide explains each status.
- Pay acceptance and clear: CCU’s acceptance and tuition fees were not published in any source I could reach, so pay only against an invoice generated on the CCU portal.
Before you pay
Every genuine CCU admission shows on JAMB CAPS, and JAMB treats admissions made outside CAPS as illegal. Apply only through portal.ccu.edu.ng, pay only against a portal invoice, and never pay an individual who promises you a place.
Studying English and Literary Studies at CCU
Is CCU English and Literary Studies accredited?
Here is what the official record shows:
- CCU runs the course: its Faculty of Arts, Social and Management Sciences page lists English and Literary Studies, and JAMB lists it for CCU. Admission into it through CAPS is legitimate.
- NUC result: the NUC’s “Accreditation Results 1990 to 2025” publication (September 2026) lists English and Literary Studies under CCU’s Arts and Humanities programmes as Full, with a maturity date of 2024.
- No later result yet: full accreditation runs for five years, so a 2024 maturity means the programme was due for its next NUC visit. The publication shows no newer entry, and I found no NUC report page for it.
NUC visits and publications often run late, so the gap alone proves little. A candidate paying private university fees still deserves a straight answer, so ask the admissions office whether the 2024/2025 re-accreditation has taken place and what the result was.
What you study
CCU has not put its course outline online. A Nigerian B.A. English and Literary Studies normally runs for four years under the NUC’s core curriculum:
- 100 level: introduction to literature, the English language, poetry, drama and prose, use of English and general studies.
- 200 and 300 levels: phonetics and phonology, syntax and semantics, African and English literature, the novel, literary theory, creative writing and stylistics.
- 400 level: advanced criticism, sociolinguistics, special authors, oral literature and a long essay (project).
Careers
English graduates go into teaching (with a postgraduate diploma in education), publishing, editing, journalism, content writing, public relations, advertising, administration and the civil service. Strong writers also find work in copywriting and communications for banks and tech firms. In my experience, a portfolio of published writing or edited work matters as much as the class of degree.

Mistakes that cost English applicants a CCU place
- Dropping Literature in English from the UTME: without it you do not meet JAMB’s rule.
- A Literature pass instead of a credit: the O’level rule needs a credit.
- Leaving CCU as second choice when CCU is the school you want.
- O’level not on CAPS: CCU cannot propose you until it is there.
- Paying an agent: CCU admission runs through its portal and JAMB CAPS only.
If you are preparing for the 2027 UTME, read when JAMB 2027 registration starts and, after the exam, how to check your JAMB result.
