CCU Education and English Language Cut-Off Mark 2027/2028 & Admission Requirements

Coal City University’s Education and English Language cut-off for 2027/2028 is the JAMB minimum of 150. UTME subjects, the Literature rule, O’level, how to apply and the course’s Full NUC status.

The CCU Education and English Language cut-off mark is 150, JAMB’s national minimum for universities for 2026/2027. Coal City University, Enugu, has not published a higher figure for this course, so 150 or more with Literature in English among your UTME subjects and credits in both English Language and Literature at O’level makes you eligible for the B.Ed. Education and English Language.

2027/2028 update: CCU cut-off marks usually stay the same from one year to the next, so the figures on this page are what 2027/2028 candidates should plan with. They come from the latest official notice (2026/2027). If the 2027/2028 notice changes anything, we will update this page.

The JAMB course name is Education and English Language, exactly as it appears on CCU’s JAMB course list. CCU’s Faculty of Education page lists B.Ed. Education & English Language in the Department of Education Foundation, and the NUC’s Accreditation Results 1990 to 2025 list (September 2026) shows Education English at CCU with Full accreditation and a maturity date of 2028.

Safe target score for Education and English Language at CCU (my advice)

This is advice, not a CCU rule. English Education is a popular teaching subject, but CCU is a young private university, and in my experience candidates here are turned back for missing Literature far more often than for a low score.

Your UTME scoreMy read for Education and English Language at CCU
Below 150Not eligible for any university course in Nigeria this session
150 to 169Eligible. A place is realistic if your O’level subjects match the course
170 to 199Comfortable for an education course at a private university of CCU’s size
200 and aboveStrong. Your O’level and documents become the only real questions

I would aim for 180 or more in the 2027 UTME. Use of English counts towards that total for every candidate, and for an English teacher it should be your strongest paper.

UTME subject combination and O’level for Education and English Language at CCU

RequirementEducation and English Language at CCU
UTME subjectsUse of English, Literature in English, one Arts subject and one other subject
O’levelFive credits including English Language and Literature in English, plus three Arts or Social Science subjects
SittingsNo more than two (CCU’s 2022/2023 guidance)
Direct EntryTwo A-level passes including Literature in English, or NCE credit/merit in two relevant subjects
CCU-specific remark in the brochureNone

Literature in English is the subject that decides this course. A typical combination is Literature, Government and CRS, or Literature, History and Economics. If you dropped Literature in SS2, fix that before the 2027 registration, because a UTME combination without it does not meet JAMB’s line.

Mathematics is not named in the brochure’s main O’level rule for this course. CCU’s last published guidance (2022/2023) asked for five credits including English and Mathematics for its programmes, though, so I would not rely on applying without a Mathematics credit. Get one, or get CCU’s answer in writing before you apply.

Educational Management and Guidance and Counseling with English

CCU’s faculty page also lists B.Ed. Educational Management/English Lang. and B.Ed. Guidance and Counseling/English Lang. Those names are not on CCU’s JAMB list, which has Education and English Language, Educational Management and Guidance and Counseling as separate entries. Ask the admissions office which name covers the combined degree before you register.

Direct Entry into Education and English Language

JAMB’s brochure accepts two A-level passes including Literature in English, or an NCE with credit or merit in two relevant subjects, usually English plus another arts subject. CCU has not published a Direct Entry notice of its own for 2026/2027.

If you hold, or are thinking about, an NCE: JAMB’s 2026 policy meeting exempted NCE programmes from the UTME, and colleges of education stopped taking degree students at 100 and 200 level from 2026/2027, so everyone there now starts with the NCE. An NCE with good grades in your teaching subjects is also a Direct Entry route into a B.Ed. at a university such as CCU. Direct Entry candidates still register with JAMB and are admitted through CAPS.

How CCU screens Education and English Language applicants

CCU has not published its 2026/2027 screening details in any source I could reach. The Myschool reprint of the 2026/2027 advert (18 May 2026) invites applications into the university’s undergraduate programmes, but the part that can be read gives no dates, no fee and no word on a written test. The table separates what was published for an earlier session from what is still unknown.

Many private universities in Nigeria admit on UTME score plus O’level, sometimes with a short interview, instead of a scored Post-UTME test. I can’t confirm which method CCU used in 2026, so prepare for both: keep your UTME result slip, O’level certificates or statements of result, birth certificate, local government identification and passport photographs in one folder.

Worked example for an Education and English Language candidate

CCU publishes no aggregate, so the useful arithmetic is your margin over 150 and my target, plus the O’level check.

Blessing scored 168 in English, Literature in English, Government and CRS. Her O’level has credits in English Language, Literature, Government, CRS and Mathematics in one sitting.

  1. Eligibility: 168 minus 150 = 18. She is 18 marks over the minimum.
  2. Against my safe target: 168 minus 180 = minus 12. Below my target but inside the eligible band.
  3. O’level check: English Language and Literature both credited, plus three arts subjects and Mathematics. Clean.
  4. Advice: apply as soon as the portal opens and make sure her O’level is on CAPS.

Uche scored 210 in English, Government, Economics and CRS. He has no Literature in the UTME, so JAMB’s line is not met. He should look at Education and Social Studies or ask CCU in writing whether it will consider him. Any 50:50 aggregate you see printed for CCU is a website’s guess; the university has not published one.

How to apply for Education and English Language at CCU, step by step

  1. Get your JAMB profile code: send NIN, a space and your 11-digit NIN to 55019 or 66019 from the phone line linked to your NIN.
  2. Register the UTME correctly: choose the course named Education and English Language under Coal City University and write the subjects in the table above.
  3. Put CCU on your form: make Coal City University your first choice. If you chose another school, do a JAMB change of institution at a CBT centre or JAMB office.
  4. Upload your O’level to CAPS: do this at a JAMB-accredited CBT centre as soon as your WAEC, NECO or NABTEB result is out. CCU cannot offer you admission on CAPS without it.
  5. Apply on the CCU portal: go to portal.ccu.edu.ng, choose the option for degree programmes, generate an invoice and pay. A 2026 blog put the form at ₦2,000, the same figure reported for 2022/2023. CCU’s own 2026/2027 notice was not available to me, so go by the amount on your invoice.
  6. Submit and print: enter your JAMB registration number, complete the form, submit it and print the application form and your UTME result slip.
  7. Accept on CAPS: log in at efacility.jamb.gov.ng, choose Check Admission Status, then Access my CAPS. Accept the CCU offer and print your JAMB admission letter. JAMB allows four weeks to accept or reject an offer.
  8. Pay acceptance and clear: CCU’s acceptance and tuition fees were not published in any source I could open. Get the figures from the portal or the admissions office before you pay anything.

Warning

Every genuine CCU admission shows on JAMB CAPS. Do not pay anyone who promises a place for money, and pay only against an invoice generated on the CCU portal.

JAMB set 30 November 2026 as the 2026/2027 admission deadline for private universities, a month after the 31 October 2026 date for public universities (News Agency of Nigeria, 11 May 2026). JAMB also said any admission made outside CAPS is illegal. If you sat the 2026 UTME and chose CCU, keep checking CAPS. Our JAMB CAPS guide explains what each status means.

Studying Education and English Language at Coal City University

Education and English Language sits in the Department of Education Foundation, one of the two departments in CCU’s Faculty of Education. Professor Rev. Fr. Augustine Akubue is the dean named on the faculty page. CCU awards a B.Ed.; through UTME a Nigerian B.Ed. normally takes four years, though CCU’s page does not say so.

What you study

  • Language courses: English phonetics and phonology, grammar and syntax, semantics, sociolinguistics and the use of English in Nigeria.
  • Literature courses: African and non-African prose, poetry and drama.
  • Education courses: educational psychology, curriculum, teaching methods, guidance and counselling, and measurement and evaluation.
  • Methods of teaching English: teaching reading, writing, oral English and literature to secondary school classes.
  • Teaching practice and project: a school placement and a research project in the final year.

That is the general pattern for a Nigerian B.Ed. in English; CCU has not posted a course list.

Accreditation and teacher registration

NUC’s 1990 to 2025 results list shows Education English at CCU as Full with a maturity date of 2028. CCU’s separate B.A. English and Literary Studies has a Full result with a 2024 maturity date and no newer result in the list, so ask about its current status if you are comparing the two. Teachers in Nigeria register with the Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN), which includes passing its Professional Qualifying Examination.

Careers

English is taught in every secondary school class, so English teachers are always in demand in public and private schools. Graduates also work in examination bodies, publishing and editing, communications, language training and, after a master’s degree, in lecturing.

Mistakes that cost English Education applicants a CCU place

  • No Literature in English in the UTME: the course line requires it.
  • No Literature credit at O’level: the brochure names both English Language and Literature.
  • Relying on no Mathematics credit: CCU’s last published guidance asked for Mathematics; confirm before applying without it.
  • Registering “English and Literary Studies” by mistake: that is the B.A., not the B.Ed.
  • Missing the CAPS window: accept within four weeks.

If you are aiming at the 2027 UTME, read when JAMB 2027 registration starts, and after the exam use our guide on checking your JAMB result and what to do with the score. Read your Literature set texts early; they carry a large share of the Literature paper.
