The CCU Sociology cut-off mark is 150 in the UTME. That is JAMB’s 2026 minimum for all Nigerian universities, and Coal City University, Enugu has not published a departmental cut-off for Sociology or declared a cut-off of its own at JAMB’s 2026 policy meeting. A score of 150 makes you eligible, and a higher “official CCU Sociology cut-off” quoted online did not come from the university.
2027/2028 update: CCU cut-off marks usually stay the same from one year to the next, so the figures on this page are what 2027/2028 candidates should plan with. They come from the latest official notice (2026/2027). If the 2027/2028 notice changes anything, we will update this page.
Sociology is on JAMB’s list for Coal City University as Sociology, and it is one of the eight B.Sc. degrees CCU lists under “Courses” on its Faculty of Arts, Social and Management Sciences page. It has full NUC accreditation from the 2021 exercise. Sociology is also one of the few courses where the JAMB brochure carries a remark written specifically for Coal City University, and that remark changes how the Mathematics requirement works. The details are below, with screening, a safe target score and the CAPS steps.
CCU Sociology cut-off mark at a glance

CCU Sociology cut-off history
| Session | Figure | What it is | Status |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2026/2027 | 150 | JAMB national minimum for universities | Official (JAMB, 11 May 2026) |
| 2026/2027 | Not published | CCU’s own figure for Sociology | CCU did not declare one |
| 2025/2026 | 150 | JAMB national minimum for universities | Reported by Nairametrics, 8 July 2025 |
| 2025/2026 | Not published | CCU’s own figure | None found |
One blog, AbsTechConnect (25 May 2026), puts CCU’s cut-off at 150 without citing a CCU notice. It is the same as the national minimum.
Safe target score for Sociology at CCU (my advice)
This is my judgement, since CCU does not publish its last admitted score. Sociology usually attracts fewer applicants than Mass Communication, Accounting or Psychology at private universities in Enugu, so a score close to the minimum has a fair chance if the rest of your file is complete.
| Your UTME score | My read for CCU Sociology |
|---|---|
| Below 150 | Not eligible for any university this session |
| 150 to 164 | Eligible; a realistic chance with complete O’level and an early application |
| 165 to 184 | Comfortable for a private university |
| 185 and above | Strong |
For the 2027 UTME I would aim for at least 165. That clears the 160 screening line that UNN and ESUT used for Sociology and Anthropology in 2026, so you keep those options as well.
UTME subject combination and O’level for Sociology at CCU
The JAMB brochure entry for Sociology (Myschool reprint, checked 30 October 2026) has a remark labelled “COAL-CITY” in both the UTME and O’level sections. Where a school has its own remark, that remark is the rule for that school.
| Requirement | Sociology at CCU |
|---|---|
| JAMB course name to register | Sociology (Coal City University) |
| UTME subjects | Use of English plus three Social Science or Arts subjects, for example Government, Economics and Literature in English |
| O’level (general rule) | Five credits including English Language, Government or History and three other subjects, with at least a pass in Mathematics |
| O’level (CCU remark) | A credit in English Language; a credit in Agricultural Science, Biology, Fisheries, Chemistry or Physics is accepted to offset a Mathematics deficiency |
| Exams accepted | WAEC, NECO or NABTEB (CCU has not published its own list) |
| Direct Entry | Two A-level passes including Government or History (no CCU remark) |
What the CCU Mathematics remark means for you
Read literally, the remark lets a credit in one science subject (Agricultural Science, Biology, Fisheries, Chemistry or Physics) stand in when your Mathematics result falls short. That is unusual and helpful for arts students who struggled with Mathematics but did well in Biology or Agricultural Science.
Two cautions. The remark does not say how weak a Mathematics grade it will cover, and CCU has not repeated the rule in any admission notice I could open. If your Mathematics is a pass or a fail, write to CCU’s admissions office before you pay, and keep the science credit on the same result as your other subjects if you can.
Choosing your three UTME subjects
Government and Economics are safe picks because they also match the O’level general rule and keep Political Science and Public Administration at CCU open as fallbacks. For the third, choose the Arts or Social Science subject you score best in: Literature in English, CRS, Geography or History.
How CCU screening works for Sociology
| Detail | What is known |
|---|---|
| Admission advert | CCU invited applications into its undergraduate programmes for 2026/2027 (Myschool reprint of the notice, 18 May 2026). Sociology is one of the eight B.Sc. degrees listed under “Courses” on CCU’s faculty page. |
| Who could apply | UTME candidates, Direct Entry applicants and transfer students (AbsTechConnect, May 2026; unofficial) |
| Application portal | portal.ccu.edu.ng (the “Apply Now” link on ccu.edu.ng) |
| Form fee | ₦2,000 according to AbsTechConnect; CCU has not confirmed it in any notice I could open |
| Screening date and format | Not published |
| Aggregate formula | Not published |
| Other routes | CCU also advertises JUPEB, IJMB and pre-degree for 2026/2027 |
Worked example for a Sociology candidate
CCU has not published an aggregate formula, so I will only work out margins and eligibility.
Take Kosisochukwu, who scored 158 with English B3, Government C4, CRS B2, Literature C5, Agricultural Science C4 and a D7 in Mathematics in one WAEC sitting.
- Eligibility: 158 minus 150 = 8 marks above the minimum.
- Against my safe target: 165 minus 158 = 7 marks short of the range I prefer, so applying early matters more for her.
- O’level check: English is a credit and Government is a credit. Mathematics is only a pass, but the CCU remark accepts a credit in Agricultural Science to offset a Mathematics deficiency, and she has one.
- My advice: apply as soon as the portal opens, upload her result to CAPS, and ask CCU in writing to confirm that her Agricultural Science credit covers the Mathematics pass.
Now Uchenna, with 171 and credits in English, Mathematics, Economics, Geography and Literature, but no Government or History. Under the general rule he needs one of those two. The CCU remark does not mention them, which leaves room for doubt, so he should check with CCU before paying.
Admission odds and practical advice
- Above 150, the file decides: complete O’level, an early application and a clean CAPS record count for more than a few extra marks.
- Quota limits still apply: the NUC caps each programme, so a late application can lose out even with a good score.
- Make CCU your first choice: if another school is first, do a JAMB change of institution before CCU proposes candidates.
- Keep a Plan B inside CCU: Psychology uses the same three Arts or Social Science UTME rule, and Public Administration and Political Science share most subjects.
- Mind the 2026/2027 deadline: JAMB set 30 November 2026 for private universities to conclude 2026/2027 admissions.
How to apply for Sociology at CCU, step by step
- Get your JAMB profile code: send NIN, a space and your 11-digit NIN to 55019 or 66019 from the phone line linked to your NIN.
- Register the UTME correctly: pick Coal City University and the course “Sociology”, with Use of English plus three Social Science or Arts subjects.
- Upload your O’level to CAPS: do it at a JAMB-accredited centre once your result is out. CCU cannot recommend you without it, and awaiting-result candidates stay stuck until the upload is done.
- Apply on the CCU portal: open portal.ccu.edu.ng, fill the undergraduate form, pay the fee the portal shows and print your slip.
- Watch for screening: CCU has not published a screening date or format for this course, so check the portal and ccu.edu.ng after you apply.
- Accept on CAPS: log in to efacility.jamb.gov.ng, choose Check Admission Status, then Access my CAPS, and accept the offer. JAMB gives four weeks to accept. Our JAMB CAPS guide explains each status.
- Pay acceptance and clear: CCU has not published its acceptance or tuition fees in any source I could open, so pay only what your portal invoice shows, through the channel on the portal.
Warning
Posts on forums and classified sites sell “CCU admission forms” and list private phone numbers. Apply only through portal.ccu.edu.ng, never pay an individual for a “slot”, and check that any offer shows on your JAMB CAPS page before you pay acceptance.
Studying Sociology at CCU
Sociology belongs to CCU’s Faculty of Arts, Social and Management Sciences, which the university set up in 2016. Professor Joseph I. Aneke is the dean. Note the course name: CCU runs Sociology, while UNN and ESUT run Sociology and Anthropology. The content overlaps a lot, but JAMB treats them as separate course names, so register the one that matches the school.
Accreditation
Sociology was one of six CCU programmes that the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Afam Icha-Ituma, said in April 2022 had earned full NUC accreditation from the October/November 2021 exercise. The NUC’s “Accreditation Results 1990 to 2025” publication (September 2026) lists Sociology under CCU’s Social Sciences as Full, maturity date 2026.
Full accreditation runs for five years, so the next visit is due around now. I found no newer NUC report. Visits every five years are routine, but if you are paying for 2027 entry it is fair to ask the department about the re-accreditation result.
What you study
CCU has not put its Sociology outline online. The standard four-year B.Sc. Sociology in Nigeria covers:
- 100 level: introduction to sociology, anthropology, psychology, political science, economics and general studies.
- 200 and 300 levels: sociological theory, social research methods and statistics, the family, rural and urban sociology, social problems, sociology of development, industrial sociology and criminology.
- 400 level: medical sociology, gender studies, population studies, social policy, electives and a research project.
Careers
Sociology graduates work in social welfare and community development, NGOs and international agencies, research and survey firms, human resources, the civil service, journalism and teaching. The research methods and statistics courses are what employers value most, so treat them seriously; graduates who can design and run a survey find work faster than those who cannot.

Mistakes that cost Sociology applicants a CCU place
- Registering the wrong course name: at CCU it is “Sociology”, not “Sociology and Anthropology”. A JAMB change of course fixes it.
- Assuming the Mathematics remark covers everything: it offsets a Mathematics deficiency with a named science credit; it does not replace English.
- O’level not on CAPS: CCU cannot recommend you without it.
- Using a science subject in the UTME: the CCU remark asks for three Social Science or Arts subjects.
- Paying agents: apply on the CCU portal only.
If you are preparing for 2027, read when JAMB 2027 registration starts, then how to check your JAMB result once results are out.
CCU Sociology cut-off mark: frequently asked questions
Is 150 enough for Sociology at Coal City University? Yes, 150 is the minimum that applies, since CCU has published no higher Sociology figure. At that score, apply early and make sure your O’level is complete.
Can I study Sociology at CCU without a credit in Mathematics? The JAMB brochure has a CCU remark that accepts a credit in Agricultural Science, Biology, Fisheries, Chemistry or Physics to offset a Mathematics deficiency. Confirm with CCU before paying, because the university has not restated the rule in its own notices.
What JAMB subjects do I need for Sociology at CCU? Use of English and three Social Science or Arts subjects, according to the brochure remark for Coal City University. Government, Economics and Literature in English is a safe set.
Is Sociology at CCU accredited by NUC? Yes. It earned full accreditation in the 2021 exercise, and the NUC results list shows Full with a 2026 maturity date, so re-accreditation falls due around now.
