The SUMAS cut off mark for Civil Engineering in 2026/2027 is 150 in the UTME. That is the general minimum the State University of Medical and Applied Sciences (SUMAS), Igbo-Eno, Enugu State, set for every programme in its 2026/2027 Post-UTME notice, and it was also 150 in 2025/2026. With 150 or more, SUMAS as first choice and five relevant O’Level credits, you could apply for screening, and Civil Engineering was one of the programmes SUMAS reopened on its October 2026 supplementary list.
2027/2028 update: SUMAS cut-off marks usually stay the same from one year to the next, so the figures on this page are what 2027/2028 candidates should plan with. They come from the latest official notice (2026/2027). If the 2027/2028 notice changes anything, we will update this page.
SUMAS has never published a separate departmental cut off for Civil Engineering, for any year: no merit list with scores, no aggregate formula and no catchment list. Any website quoting a precise SUMAS Civil Engineering cut off did not get it from the university. This guide covers what is official, the subjects JAMB lists for the course, the accreditation position, how screening appears to work, the score I would aim for and every step from JAMB registration to acceptance fee.
SUMAS Civil Engineering cut off mark 2027/2028 at a glance
| Item | Civil Engineering (B.Eng.) at SUMAS | Status |
|---|---|---|
| General SUMAS UTME cut off, 2026/2027 | 150 | Official (SUMAS Post-UTME notice) |
| General SUMAS UTME cut off, 2025/2026 | 150 | Previous year, from the SUMAS notice as reproduced by Myschool |
| Departmental cut off for Civil Engineering | Not published | No SUMAS list for any year |
| Faculty | Faculty of Engineering and the Built Environment | Official programme list |
| NUC accreditation | Not yet accredited; SUMAS says it is due for accreditation in 2026 | Official (SUMAS NUC notice) |
| COREN accreditation | Not published | No COREN report on SUMAS found |
| Supplementary admission 2026/2027 | On the October 2026 list (UTME 150 and above) | Myschool and FreshNote, 17 October 2026 |
| Post-UTME form | ₦2,000; opened 22 June 2026, extended to 4 October 2026 | Closed |
| Acceptance fee | ₦50,000 | Official (2026/2027 instructions to successful candidates) |
| School fees | ₦251,400 for Engineering | 2022/2023 schedule, the latest SUMAS has published |
Two numbers often get mixed up. The general cut off (150) decides whether you may apply at all. A departmental cut off is the lowest score actually admitted into one course in one year, which a school only knows after screening. SUMAS publishes the first and has never published the second.
SUMAS cut off mark for Civil Engineering: the history
| Session | Minimum UTME to apply | Civil Engineering departmental cut off | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2026/2027 | 150 | Not published | SUMAS Post-UTME and Direct Entry notice |
| 2025/2026 (previous year) | 150 | Not published | SUMAS notice as reproduced by Myschool, July 2025 |
The minimum has held at 150 for two sessions, but SUMAS can change it each year after JAMB’s policy meeting, so read the 2027/2028 notice before you plan around it. Some directory sites quote 160 for SUMAS. That figure comes from a private listing that also calls SUMAS a federal university. SUMAS belongs to the Enugu State Government and has not used 160.
SUMAS admission lists show masked JAMB numbers by course with no scores, so nobody outside the admissions office knows the lowest score admitted into Civil Engineering last year.
Is Civil Engineering at SUMAS accredited?
Not yet, and it helps to understand why. When the National Universities Commission (NUC) visited between 28 October and 3 December 2025, it granted full accreditation to the 15 SUMAS programmes that were due. SUMAS said its remaining programmes, which include all six engineering degrees, are due for accreditation in 2026 and are waiting for NUC to schedule the visit. Civil Engineering is approved and running; it simply has not reached the stage where NUC accreditation is assessed. Programmes are usually accredited once they have enough years of students in the system.
The engineering regulator, the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN), accredits B.Eng. programmes separately, and COREN registration is what you need to practise as an engineer later. I found no published COREN accreditation or visit report for SUMAS. That is normal for a young faculty, but it is worth asking the department about its COREN timeline before you accept, and checking again before you reach final year.
UTME subject combination and O’Level requirements for Civil Engineering
SUMAS does not publish its own subject list per course. It follows the JAMB brochure, and the brochure entry for Civil Engineering (as reproduced by Myschool) gives the general rule below. Confirm it on the JAMB e-brochure when you register.
| Requirement | Civil Engineering |
|---|---|
| UTME subjects | Use of English, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry |
| O’Level (JAMB brochure) | Five credits in English Language, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and one other science subject |
| Fifth O’Level subject at some universities | Further Mathematics or Technical Drawing |
| Direct Entry (JAMB brochure) | A Level passes in Physics and Mathematics, or ND/HND at upper credit in a relevant field |
| O’Level (SUMAS rule) | Five credits including English Language, Mathematics and Physics, plus two other relevant subjects |
| Sittings | Not more than two (only Medicine and Surgery is limited to one sitting) |
| Direct Entry (SUMAS rule) | At least second class lower or its equivalent in OND, HND or a first degree, cleared on JAMB e-Facility |
For your O’Level, English Language, Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry are fixed. For the fifth, Biology is accepted almost everywhere, while Further Mathematics or Technical Drawing are welcome at several universities and suit a civil engineer well. SUMAS has not named a fifth subject; its own rule asks for two relevant subjects beside English, Mathematics and Physics, and Chemistry should be one of them.
Technical Drawing deserves a word. It is not compulsory, but students who did it in secondary school usually find first-year engineering drawing far easier, and civil engineers read and produce drawings for the rest of their careers.
If you are still preparing, our JAMB Chemistry syllabus guide covers one of your three UTME science papers.
On Direct Entry, the SUMAS notice names OND, HND and first degree holders. It does not mention A Level, JUPEB or IJMB, so phone the admissions office on 08067390088 before you buy a form if that is your route.
How SUMAS screening works for Civil Engineering candidates
SUMAS described its 2026/2027 exercise as screening. It published no written Post-UTME test and no test date, and it has never said how it weighs your UTME score against your O’Level grades. Candidates admitted without doing the Post-UTME were later told to register on the SAMP portal, pay the screening fee and report to the ICT Unit for verification. That points to a records-based screening, though SUMAS has not confirmed it in so many words.
To see how a records-based ranking can work, here is the 50/50 method many Nigerian universities use. SUMAS has not published its formula, so treat this as an illustration only.
- UTME half: divide your UTME score by 8. A perfect 400 becomes 50.
- O’Level half: score each of your five relevant grades (A1 = 10, B2 = 9, B3 = 8, C4 = 7, C5 = 6, C6 = 5). The most you can get is 50.
- Total: add the two halves for a score out of 100.
Take Obinna, who scored 198 in the UTME and has B3 in Mathematics, B3 in Technical Drawing, C4 in Physics, C4 in English Language and C5 in Chemistry.
| Part | Working | Points |
|---|---|---|
| UTME | 198 ÷ 8 | 24.75 |
| O’Level | 8 + 8 + 7 + 7 + 6 | 36 |
| Total | 24.75 + 36 | 60.75 out of 100 |
Obinna is a fairly typical candidate: a sub-200 UTME score and middling credits. Under this method his weakest spot is Chemistry; lifting that C5 to B3 adds two points, equal to 16 UTME marks. Use it to see where you can improve, not to predict a SUMAS decision.
How competitive is Civil Engineering at SUMAS?
Less competitive than the health courses, going by the evidence so far. The SUMAS supplementary admission list reported on 17 October 2026 included all six engineering programmes, Civil Engineering among them, open to anyone with 150 or more in the 2026 UTME. A supplementary list only reopens courses that still have room, and Medicine, Nursing, Pharmacy and Computer Science were left off it. Engineering then appeared in Batch 2 of the main admission list on 21 October 2026. Civil Engineering is one of the most popular engineering courses in Nigeria, so expect more competition for it than for Biomedical or Chemical Engineering at SUMAS, even with places still open.
SUMAS has not published quotas, a catchment list or an ELDS (educationally less developed states) list. The 45% merit, 35% catchment and 20% ELDS split you may have read about is a guideline for federal universities, so do not assume it applies at SUMAS, which is state-owned.
My advice (not an official SUMAS figure): I would aim for 200 or above in the UTME, with credits no lower than B3 in Mathematics and Physics. A candidate between 170 and 190 still has a reasonable chance at SUMAS, especially through the supplementary list, but should apply early.
How to get admission into SUMAS Civil Engineering: step by step
These are the steps candidates most often get wrong, in the order they come up.
- Get your JAMB profile code: text NIN, a space, then your 11-digit NIN to 55019 or 66019 from the phone number linked to that NIN. JAMB replies with a profile code, which you take to a CBT centre to register for the UTME.
- Make SUMAS your first choice: at registration, choose State University of Medical and Applied Sciences, Igbo-Eno, as first choice and Civil Engineering as the course. If another school is your first choice, do a change of institution before SUMAS screening opens. SUMAS screens first-choice candidates only.
- Upload your O’Level to CAPS: your WAEC, NECO or NABTEB result must sit on JAMB CAPS. For 2026/2027, SUMAS gave 15 August 2026 as its upload deadline. An accredited CBT centre can do it for you.
- Apply for SUMAS screening: when the Post-UTME portal opens, apply at sumas.edu.ng/apply or samp.sumas.edu.ng and pay the ₦2,000 fee with your JAMB registration number as the narration. Your JAMB number, date of birth, state of origin and course must match CAPS exactly. SUMAS allows one application per candidate.
- Check your admission: watch the SUMAS batch lists, then log in to JAMB e-Facility and open Check Admission Status and Access my CAPS. Confirm on the SAMP portal as well.
- Accept the offer on CAPS: click Accept and print your JAMB admission letter. If SUMAS offered you a different course, the 2026/2027 notice gave candidates three days to make the change on JAMB.
- Pay the acceptance fee: log in at eportal.sumas.edu.ng as NEW STUDENT with your JAMB number and SAMP password, generate the ₦50,000 acceptance fee invoice and pay through the SUMAS Revenue Portal. Do not pay anyone’s personal account.
The full screening notice is in our SUMAS Post-UTME form 2026/2027 guide, and our SUMAS instructions to successful candidates guide walks through clearance after you accept. For the CAPS screens, see our JAMB CAPS guide.
Supplementary admission
SUMAS reopened Civil Engineering on its 2026/2027 supplementary list for candidates with 150 or more in the 2026 UTME, including those who did not choose SUMAS first but are willing to change to it. No closing date was published, so if you want a place this session, contact the admissions office (08067390088) now rather than later.
What you study in Civil Engineering
Civil engineers design and build the things everyone else uses: roads, bridges, buildings, drainage, dams, water supply and waste systems. The course sits in the Faculty of Engineering and the Built Environment at SUMAS, alongside Architecture and Quantity Surveying, the two professions civil engineers work beside on almost every construction project.
After a common first two years of mathematics, physics, chemistry, engineering drawing and workshop practice, the core usually covers:
- Strength of materials and structural analysis
- Design of reinforced concrete and steel structures
- Soil mechanics and foundation engineering
- Surveying and geomatics
- Highway and transportation engineering
- Hydraulics, water resources and environmental engineering
SUMAS has not published the length of its engineering programmes. B.Eng. degrees in Nigeria run for five years, including a period of industrial training (SIWES) with a company. You study at the Igbo-Eno campus in Udenu Local Government Area, Enugu State, on the Nsukka axis. SUMAS is still building on its Igbo-Eno site, including the teaching hospital, so civil engineering students study on a campus where construction work is happening around them.
For fees, the only SUMAS schedule online is the 2022/2023 one, which charged ₦251,400 for Engineering students. Expect the 2026/2027 figure to differ, and add the ₦50,000 acceptance fee.
Career paths after Civil Engineering
After graduation, and COREN registration once you have the required supervised experience, civil engineers work in:
- Construction companies, as site, project or structural engineers
- Consulting firms, designing buildings, roads and bridges
- Federal, state and local government works and water ministries
- Road, rail and infrastructure agencies
- Water supply, drainage and environmental projects
- Teaching, research and postgraduate study
If Civil Engineering is not the right fit, these SUMAS programmes are close relatives:
- SUMAS Architecture cut off mark
- SUMAS Quantity Surveying cut off mark
- SUMAS Mechanical Engineering cut off mark
- SUMAS Chemical Engineering cut off mark
Mistakes Civil Engineering applicants make
- Leaving Chemistry out of the UTME: the combination for Civil Engineering is Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry with English. Some candidates register Geography or Technical Drawing as a UTME subject in error.
- A weak Mathematics credit: a C6 in Mathematics meets the minimum but leaves you struggling in year one, and it pulls down any O’Level-based ranking.
- SUMAS as second choice: SUMAS screens first-choice candidates only. Fix it with a change of institution before you pay for the form.
- Mismatched details: a date of birth or course on the SAMP portal that differs from your JAMB record can stall your application.
- No O’Level on CAPS: without it, SUMAS cannot move you forward, however high your score.
SUMAS Civil Engineering cut off mark: frequently asked questions
Is 200 enough for Civil Engineering in SUMAS? 200 is well above the 150 minimum, and Civil Engineering was on the 2026/2027 supplementary list, so places were still open late in the session. SUMAS publishes no departmental cut off, so there is no guarantee, but a 200 candidate with solid credits in Mathematics and Physics is in a good position.
Do I need Technical Drawing for Civil Engineering at SUMAS? No. SUMAS asks for credits in English, Mathematics and Physics plus two other relevant subjects, and Chemistry is expected. Technical Drawing or Further Mathematics can serve as the fifth subject but neither is compulsory.
Can I use awaiting result for SUMAS Civil Engineering? Not in practice. The 2026/2027 notice required O’Level results on JAMB CAPS by 15 August 2026, so a result still awaited at the upload deadline will not be considered that session.
Is SUMAS Civil Engineering accredited by COREN? No COREN accreditation has been published. The programme runs with NUC approval and SUMAS says it is due for NUC accreditation in 2026.
