SUMAS Architecture Cut-Off Mark 2027/2028: JAMB Subjects, Entry Requirements and Screening

The SUMAS cut off mark for Architecture in 2027/2028 is 150. See the JAMB subject combination, O’Level rules, NUC accreditation, the supplementary list, a worked screening example and the score to aim for.

The SUMAS cut off mark for Architecture in 2026/2027 is 150 in the UTME. That is the general minimum the State University of Medical and Applied Sciences (SUMAS), Igbo-Eno, Enugu State, set for all its programmes in the 2026/2027 Post-UTME notice, and it was also 150 in 2025/2026. With 150 or more, SUMAS as your first choice and five relevant O’Level credits, you could apply for screening. Architecture was also one of the courses SUMAS reopened on its October 2026 supplementary admission list.

2027/2028 update: SUMAS cut-off marks usually stay the same from one year to the next, so the figures on this page are what 2027/2028 candidates should plan with. They come from the latest official notice (2026/2027). If the 2027/2028 notice changes anything, we will update this page.

SUMAS has never published a departmental cut off for Architecture for any year. There is no merit list with scores, no published aggregate formula and no catchment list, so a site quoting an exact SUMAS Architecture cut off did not get it from the university. Below you will find what is official, the JAMB subjects for the course, the accreditation position (Architecture is one of the SUMAS programmes with full NUC accreditation), how screening appears to work, the score I would aim for and each step from JAMB registration to paying your acceptance fee.

Keep two numbers apart. The general cut off (150) decides whether you are allowed to apply. A departmental cut off is the lowest score that actually got into one course in one year, and a school only knows it after screening. SUMAS publishes the first and has never published the second.

SUMAS cut off mark for Architecture: the history

2025/2026 (previous year)150Not publishedSUMAS notice as reproduced by Myschool, July 2025

The minimum has stayed at 150 for two sessions. SUMAS can still move it each year after JAMB’s policy meeting, so read the 2027/2028 notice before you plan around it. A few directory sites quote 160 for SUMAS. That number comes from a private listing that also wrongly calls SUMAS a federal university; SUMAS is owned by the Enugu State Government and has not used 160.

SUMAS admission lists show masked JAMB numbers by course without scores. So nobody outside the admissions office can tell you the lowest score admitted into Architecture last year, and you should be wary of anyone who claims to.

Is Architecture at SUMAS accredited?

Yes, by the National Universities Commission. SUMAS announced that NUC granted full accreditation to 15 of its programmes after an exercise that ran from 28 October to 3 December 2025, and Architecture is on that list. That makes it the only programme in the Faculty of Engineering and the Built Environment with full NUC accreditation so far. The six engineering degrees and Quantity Surveying are approved and running but not yet accredited; SUMAS says they are due in 2026.

The professional regulator, the Architects Registration Council of Nigeria (ARCON), accredits architecture schools separately, and ARCON registration is what lets you practise and sign drawings as an architect later. I found no published ARCON accreditation or visit report for SUMAS, and ARCON does not keep an easy-to-find public list online. SUMAS has said several professional bodies have visited its programmes while others have not yet scheduled visits, without naming them. Ask the department about its ARCON status before you accept, and check again before you finish the B.Sc.

UTME subject combination and O’Level requirements for Architecture

SUMAS does not publish its own subject list for each course. It follows the JAMB brochure, and the brochure entry for Architecture (as reproduced by Myschool) gives the general rule below. SUMAS is not named in the institution-specific notes, so the general rule applies. Confirm it on the JAMB e-brochure when you register.

RequirementArchitecture
UTME subjectsUse of English, Physics, Mathematics, plus one of Chemistry, Geography, Fine Art, Biology or Economics
O’Level (JAMB brochure)Five credits in English Language, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and one of Fine Art, Geography, Woodwork, Biology, Economics, Technical Drawing, Further Mathematics or a building trade subject
Direct Entry (JAMB brochure)Two A Level passes from Mathematics or Physics with Chemistry, Geography or Fine Art, or ND/HND at upper credit in a relevant field
O’Level (SUMAS rule)Five credits including English Language, Mathematics and Physics, plus two other relevant subjects
SittingsNot more than two (only Medicine and Surgery is limited to one sitting)
Direct Entry (SUMAS rule)At least second class lower or its equivalent in OND, HND or a first degree, cleared on JAMB e-Facility
Portfolio or aptitude testNone published by SUMAS for 2026/2027

Which third UTME subject should you take? I would pick Chemistry. The brochure’s O’Level list already asks for a Chemistry credit, so you are studying it anyway, and Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics also keep engineering courses open if you later need a change of course. Fine Art or Geography are accepted too, and they suit a candidate who is stronger in drawing than in science, but they narrow your fallback options.

For the O’Level fifth subject, Technical Drawing or Fine Art is the most useful choice. Neither is compulsory at SUMAS, but students who drew in secondary school find first-year studio work and graphics much easier. Some universities go further (UNILAG, for example, asks Direct Entry applicants for an architectural portfolio), yet SUMAS published no portfolio or drawing test for 2026/2027.

If you are still preparing for the UTME, our JAMB Chemistry syllabus guide covers the third subject I recommend. On Direct Entry, the SUMAS notice names OND, HND and first degree holders but does not mention A Level, JUPEB or IJMB, so phone the admissions office on 08067390088 before you buy a form if that is your route.

How SUMAS screening works for Architecture candidates

SUMAS called its 2026/2027 exercise a screening. It published no written Post-UTME test or test date, and it has never said how it weighs your UTME score against your O’Level grades. Candidates who were admitted without doing the Post-UTME were later told to register on the SAMP portal, pay the screening fee and report to the ICT Unit for verification. That points to screening based on your records, though SUMAS has not said so in plain words.

To see how a records-based ranking can work, here is the 50/50 method many Nigerian universities use. SUMAS has not published its formula, so treat this only as an illustration.

  1. UTME half: divide your UTME score by 8. A perfect 400 becomes 50.
  2. O’Level half: score each of your five relevant grades (A1 = 10, B2 = 9, B3 = 8, C4 = 7, C5 = 6, C6 = 5). The most you can get is 50.
  3. Total: add the two halves for a score out of 100.

Take Adaeze, who scored 205 in the UTME and has B2 in Mathematics, B3 in English Language, B3 in Fine Art, C4 in Physics and C5 in Chemistry.

PartWorkingPoints
UTME205 ÷ 825.63
O’Level9 + 8 + 8 + 7 + 638
Total25.63 + 3863.63 out of 100

Adaeze is a typical Architecture applicant: a UTME score just over 200 and a mix of good and middling credits. Under this method her weakest spot is Chemistry. Raising that C5 to a B3 is worth two points, the same as 16 extra UTME marks. Use the exercise to find where you can improve, not to predict what SUMAS will decide.

How competitive is Architecture at SUMAS?

Less competitive than the health courses, on the evidence so far. When SUMAS put out its supplementary admission call, reported on 17 October 2026, Architecture was on it (listed as B.Sc. Architecture), open to anyone with 150 or more in the 2026 UTME, including candidates who chose another school first but were willing to switch to SUMAS. So the department had places to fill beyond its main screening. Medicine, Nursing, Pharmacy, Computer Science and Quantity Surveying were not on that list.

Architecture is still a course many good candidates want, and SUMAS is a young school whose numbers are rising fast. The Enugu State Governor said in January 2026 that enrolment had grown from about 500 to over 2,000. Expect more applicants each year.

SUMAS has not published quotas for each course, a catchment list or an ELDS (educationally less developed states) list. The 45% merit, 35% catchment and 20% ELDS split you may have read about is a guideline for federal universities. Do not assume it applies at SUMAS, which is state-owned.

My advice (not an official SUMAS figure): I would aim for 200 or above in the UTME, with at least B3 in Mathematics and a clean credit in Physics. A candidate between 170 and 190 still has a reasonable chance at SUMAS, particularly through the supplementary route, but should apply as early as the portal allows.

How to get admission into SUMAS Architecture: step by step

These are the steps candidates most often get wrong, in the order they come up.

  1. Get your JAMB profile code: text NIN, a space, then your 11-digit NIN to 55019 or 66019 from the phone number linked to that NIN. JAMB replies with a profile code, which you take to a CBT centre to register for the UTME.
  2. Make SUMAS your first choice: at registration, pick State University of Medical and Applied Sciences, Igbo-Eno, as first choice and Architecture as the course, with the right third subject. If another school is your first choice, do a change of institution before SUMAS screening opens. SUMAS screens first-choice candidates only.
  3. Upload your O’Level to CAPS: your WAEC, NECO or NABTEB result must be on JAMB CAPS. For 2026/2027, SUMAS set 15 August 2026 as its upload deadline. An accredited CBT centre can do the upload for you.
  4. Apply for SUMAS screening: when the Post-UTME portal opens, apply at sumas.edu.ng/apply or samp.sumas.edu.ng and pay the ₦2,000 fee with your JAMB registration number as the narration. Your JAMB number, date of birth, state of origin and course must match CAPS exactly. SUMAS allows one application per candidate.
  5. Check your admission: watch the SUMAS batch lists, then log in to JAMB e-Facility and open Check Admission Status and Access my CAPS. Confirm on the SAMP portal too.
  6. Accept the offer on CAPS: click Accept and print your JAMB admission letter. If SUMAS offered you a different course, the 2026/2027 notice gave candidates three days to make the change on JAMB.
  7. Pay the acceptance fee: log in at eportal.sumas.edu.ng as NEW STUDENT with your JAMB number and SAMP password, generate the ₦50,000 acceptance fee invoice and pay through the SUMAS Revenue Portal. Never pay into a personal account.

The full screening notice is in our SUMAS Post-UTME form 2026/2027 guide, and our SUMAS instructions to successful candidates guide covers clearance after you accept. For the CAPS screens themselves, see our JAMB CAPS guide.

Supplementary admission

SUMAS reopened Architecture on its 2026/2027 supplementary list for candidates with 150 or more in the 2026 UTME, including those who did not choose SUMAS first but are willing to change to it. No closing date was published, so if you want a place this session, call the admissions office (08067390088) now rather than later.

What you study in Architecture at SUMAS

Architecture is the design of buildings and the spaces around them, from a single house to a hospital or a whole estate. At SUMAS it sits in the Faculty of Engineering and the Built Environment beside Quantity Surveying and the engineering degrees. That matters, because architects, quantity surveyors and civil engineers work together on nearly every building project, and a university still putting up a teaching hospital and other buildings on its Igbo-Eno site is an interesting place to watch that happen.

Most of your time goes into the design studio, where you develop projects through sketches, drawings and models and defend them at reviews called “crits”. Around the studio, a Nigerian architecture programme usually covers:

  • Architectural graphics, freehand drawing and model making
  • History and theory of architecture, including African and Nigerian building traditions
  • Building construction, materials and structures
  • Environmental control: climate, lighting, ventilation and acoustics
  • Building services such as water, drainage and electrical layout
  • Computer-aided design and 3D modelling
  • Site planning, landscape and urban design
  • Professional practice and building regulations

Expect long studio hours and the cost of drawing materials, printing and model supplies on top of fees. Mathematics and Physics matter most in structures and environmental control, which is why JAMB makes them compulsory.

SUMAS has not published the length of its Architecture programme. In Nigeria the B.Sc. Architecture usually takes four years, and becoming a registered architect normally needs a further professional master’s degree (M.Sc. or M.Arch.), supervised work experience and the professional examinations. You study at the Igbo-Eno campus in Udenu Local Government Area, Enugu State, on the Nsukka axis.

On fees, the only SUMAS schedule online is from 2022/2023, which charged ₦251,400 for Engineering students (Architecture now sits in that faculty). Expect the 2026/2027 figure to differ, and add the ₦50,000 acceptance fee.

Career paths after Architecture

With the full professional route and ARCON registration, architects work in:

  • Architectural design firms, and later their own practice
  • Construction and real estate development companies
  • Federal and state ministries of works, housing and physical planning
  • Urban and regional planning, interior design and landscape work
  • 3D visualisation and building information modelling (BIM)
  • Teaching, research and postgraduate study

Graduates who stop at the B.Sc. still find work as design assistants, draughtsmen, site supervisors and visualisation artists, but they cannot call themselves registered architects.

If Architecture is not quite the right fit, these SUMAS programmes are its closest neighbours:

Mistakes Architecture applicants make

  • Dropping Physics or Mathematics in the UTME: both are compulsory for Architecture. Candidates who register English, Fine Art, Geography and Economics end up with an invalid combination.
  • No Chemistry credit: the JAMB brochure lists Chemistry among the O’Level credits for Architecture, even if you took Fine Art or Geography in the UTME.
  • SUMAS as second choice: SUMAS screens first-choice candidates only. Fix it with a change of institution before you pay for the form.
  • Mismatched details: a date of birth or course on the SAMP portal that differs from your JAMB record can hold up your application.
  • No O’Level on CAPS: without it, SUMAS cannot move you forward, whatever your score.
  • Choosing the course for the title alone: Architecture means years of late studio nights. Spend a day with a practising architect or sketch a few buildings near you before you commit.

SUMAS Architecture cut off mark: frequently asked questions

Is 180 enough for Architecture in SUMAS? 180 is above the 150 minimum, and Architecture was on the 2026/2027 supplementary list, so there were places to fill after the main screening. SUMAS publishes no departmental cut off, so nothing is guaranteed, but 180 with good credits in Mathematics and Physics gives you a fair chance.

Does SUMAS require a portfolio or drawing test for Architecture? No portfolio or drawing test was published for 2026/2027. SUMAS described a screening exercise only; a Fine Art or Technical Drawing credit is helpful but not compulsory.

Can I use awaiting result for SUMAS Architecture? Not in practice. The 2026/2027 notice required O’Level results on JAMB CAPS by 15 August 2026, so a result still awaited at that point will not be considered that session.

Is SUMAS Architecture accredited by NUC and ARCON? It has full NUC accreditation from the late 2025 exercise. No ARCON accreditation has been published, so ask the department about its ARCON timeline.
