Illinois Tech Admission Requirements for International Students 2027: Acceptance Rate, Tuition, Scholarships and Deadlines

Illinois Tech Admission Requirements for International Students 2027: Acceptance Rate, Tuition, Scholarships and Deadlines
Illinois Tech charges no application fee, is test-optional and waives English tests for students from Nigeria, Ghana and other listed countries. Here are its 55.4% acceptance rate, the $80,688 cost for 2026-27, automatic scholarships of $40,000 to $100,000 and fall 2027 deadlines.

Illinois Institute of Technology admission requirements for international students are easier to meet than most in this series: there is no application fee, SAT and ACT scores are optional (including for scholarships), and students who finished secondary school in Nigeria, Ghana, the United Kingdom and about 20 other listed countries do not need an English test at all. Everyone else needs TOEFL 80 (4.5 on the new scale), IELTS 6.5 or Duolingo 115, or one of several waivers. Illinois Tech admitted 55.4% of first-year applicants in fall 2023, the latest Common Data Set I could read.

Every international applicant is reviewed automatically for institutional scholarships worth $40,000 to $100,000 over four years, against a 2026-27 cost of attendance of $80,688. For fall 2027 entry, Early Decision closes on 1 November 2026, Early Action on 15 November 2026 and Regular Decision on 1 February 2027. I checked everything below on Illinois Tech’s own pages on 29 October 2026.

Illinois Tech is a graduate-heavy university: there are more graduate students than undergraduates. For you that means small undergraduate classes and plenty of research groups looking for help.

Illinois Tech acceptance rate and class profile

These figures come from Illinois Tech’s 2023-24 Common Data Set (students who entered in fall 2023). I could not find a newer Common Data Set on the university’s site.

About half of applicants get in, and fewer than half of enrolled students sent a test score. A good transcript in maths and science carries most of the weight here.

Illinois Tech tuition for international students (2026-27)

There is one tuition rate for all new undergraduates. Illinois Tech’s 2026-27 estimate for a new student living on campus:

Item2026-27Billed by the university?
Tuition$53,198Yes
Fees$1,850Yes
Housing$9,776Yes (on campus)
Food (meal plan)$8,772Yes
Books and supplies$1,340No (estimate)
Transportation$1,350No (estimate)
Personal and miscellaneous$3,500No (estimate)
Loan fees$902No (estimate)
Total cost of attendance$80,688

The billed part (tuition, fees, housing and meals) comes to $73,596. Health insurance is compulsory but not included in the total, and the loan fee line does not apply to international students who cannot borrow federal loans. Tuition here is well below most private universities in this series, and the scholarships cut it further.

Illinois Tech scholarships for international students

Illinois Tech reviews every international first-year and transfer applicant for institutional scholarships when it reads the application. There is no separate form. You receive only your single highest institutional award, because the university does not combine them.

ScholarshipAmountHow to get it
Institutional scholarship for international undergraduates$40,000 to $100,000 in total over four yearsAutomatic; based on grades, community involvement and other achievements
M. A. and Lila Self Leadership AcademyNot publishedApply ED or EA by 15 November; the scholarship application link is sent in early November
World Robot Olympiad (WRO) Scholarship$25,000 a year for up to four years (five for architecture)Competitive; for students with strong STEM aptitude
Dimiter Etimov ScholarshipNot publishedBulgarian citizens from Bulgarian high schools who plan to return home

The full-tuition Camras, Crown and Duchossois awards and the Heald Scholarship appear on Illinois Tech’s first-year scholarship page, which is written for US citizens and permanent residents. The international page does not list them, so do not count on them. Illinois Tech does not mention need-based aid, the CSS Profile or the ISFAA for international students.

The Common Data Set shows what this looks like in practice: in 2023-24, 392 non-resident undergraduates received institutional aid averaging $25,131 each. A four-year award of $100,000 would cover just under half of tuition each year.

Scholarship deadline

The Self Leadership Academy is open only to Early Decision and Early Action applicants who apply by 15 November 2026. If you are aiming for Illinois Tech’s top awards, apply early and ask at least one teacher for a recommendation.

Illinois Tech admission requirements for international students

  1. Application: the Common Application. Channel partner applicants and Iranian applicants use a separate Illinois Tech application site.
  2. Fee: none.
  3. Academic records: official or certified marks for the last three full years, plus all board or national exam results (for example WAEC or NECO results, A levels or CBSE). Non-English records need the original plus a certified English translation.
  4. How to send records: a school official uploads them through the Common App or emails them from the school’s domain to admission@illinoistech.edu.
  5. Recommendations: optional for Regular Decision; one to three required for Early Decision and Early Action. Strongly recommended if you want a scholarship.
  6. English proficiency: a test score or a waiver (below).
  7. Financial Affidavit of Support: shows that you or a sponsor can pay. The amount you must prove falls by the value of any scholarship you receive.
  8. Passport copy: uploaded after you are admitted and have paid the enrollment deposit.

Testing policy

SAT and ACT scores are optional for first-year, transfer and international applicants, and also for merit scholarships. If you send them, Illinois Tech superscores. Codes: SAT 1318, ACT 1040. Students admitted to more demanding programmes may be asked to take a maths placement exam.

English requirements and waivers

TestUndergraduate minimum
TOEFL iBT4.5 (new scale) or 80 (legacy); Home Edition accepted; MyBest not accepted
IELTS Academic6.5, sent electronically
Duolingo English Test115

Scores are valid for two years. You can skip the test if you meet any one of these:

  • Your secondary diploma is from an exempt country, including Nigeria, Ghana, the United Kingdom, Canada (outside Quebec), Australia, New Zealand, Jamaica, Malta and other Caribbean nations on Illinois Tech’s list.
  • SAT Evidence-Based Reading and Writing of 550, or ACT English of 25.
  • AP English 4 or 5, or IB English A (Literature, or Language and Literature) at 5, 6 or 7.
  • A qualifying GCE, GCSE or IGCSE English grade on Illinois Tech’s list.
  • Indian Standard XII English averaging B (60% or more), or Chinese Gaokao English of 120 or more.
  • Completion of Kaplan Advanced Level, ELS Level 112 or The Language Company Level 9.

If your grades and finances qualify but your English score falls short, Illinois Tech may offer conditional admission after an intensive English programme at a partner institution. English Language Services faculty can still require extra assessments or courses after you arrive.

The deadlines page gives days without a year, so the years above follow the fall 2027 cycle. Applications after the Regular Decision date are considered case by case. If you confirm by 15 March you get Illinois Tech’s early deposit benefits. There is also a spring intake: the spring 2027 Regular Decision deadline was extended from 15 October to 5 November 2026, with an I-20 request date of 30 November.

How to write a strong Illinois Tech application

Illinois Tech does not list a supplemental essay of its own; the Common App personal essay is read as one part of a holistic review. Because the same file decides your scholarship, use the essay and your recommendations to show the things the scholarship criteria mention: academic strength, community involvement and leadership.

  • Write about a real technical or practical problem you worked on, and what you did when the first attempt failed.
  • Show community involvement through actions with numbers: people taught, money raised, hours given.
  • Ask a maths or science teacher for a recommendation even if you apply Regular Decision.
  • If you competed in robotics, mention it clearly: Illinois Tech has robotics-specific awards.

A short sample opening, for illustration only:

“The generator at our church started every Sunday at 9:05, and every Sunday it drowned out the first hymn. I spent three months building a box that made it quieter. The box worked. The hymn was still late.”

What happens after you apply

  1. Review: your file is read for admission and scholarships at the same time.
  2. Decision: December (ED), January (EA) or by 15 March (RD), with any scholarship listed in the offer.
  3. Deposit: by 15 March (ED) or 1 May, then upload your passport on the Application Status page.
  4. Financial Affidavit: show liquid funds for the cost left after your scholarship.
  5. I-20 and visa: request the I-20 by 15 June, pay the SEVIS fee and attend your F-1 interview.

Common mistakes international applicants make

  • Taking an English test you do not need. If your diploma is from Nigeria, Ghana or another exempt country, put that money toward something else.
  • Sending only final-year grades. Illinois Tech wants three full years plus board exam results.
  • Applying Early Action without a recommendation. One is required for ED and EA.
  • Expecting scholarships to add up. Only your highest institutional award counts.
  • Assuming the domestic full-tuition awards are open to you. The international page does not list them.

Costs Illinois Tech scholarships will not cover

  • The part of tuition above your award, which is most of it for many students.
  • Housing and meals, $18,548 in 2026-27.
  • Compulsory health insurance, not included in the cost table.
  • Books, transport and personal costs (about $6,190 in the university’s budget).
  • Flights, visa and SEVIS fees, and Chicago winter clothing in your first year.

Majors and campus life at Illinois Tech

Illinois Tech’s undergraduate strengths are engineering, computer science and data science, architecture, applied sciences, psychology and business. The College of Architecture works out of Crown Hall, designed by Mies van der Rohe, and some scholarships run for five years for architecture students because the degree is longer.

The main Mies Campus is on Chicago’s South Side, and the Chicago-Kent College of Law is part of the university. Chicago gives you a big job market in finance, logistics, tech and engineering, and the university’s numbers page reports a student loan default rate of 1.9% against a national average of 7.3%.

Illinois Tech graduate admissions for international students

Graduate applicants need TOEFL 80 with 15 in each section (4.5 overall and in each section for tests taken from 21 January 2026), IELTS 6.5 with 6.0 in each band, or Duolingo 115 with 110 in each subscore. The same list of exempt countries applies if you attended the degree-granting school for at least two years, and Indian graduates of NAAC ‘A’ institutions can qualify with 60% in undergraduate English or a medium of instruction letter. Proof of funds must be in liquid cash accounts; salary letters and property are not accepted. Merit scholarships reduce the amount you must show for the I-20.

For other private technical universities, see our guides to Rensselaer and WPI. In the same city, UChicago meets full need for admitted international students but admits under 5%.

Who should apply to Illinois Tech

Illinois Tech is a strong choice for students who want engineering, computing or architecture in a big city, have good grades but modest or no test scores, and come from a country on the English exemption list. With a top award of $100,000 over four years, you would still need around $55,000 a year for the rest of the cost, so families who cannot reach that should also apply to full-need colleges such as Yale or Duke, and look through our list of US scholarships for international students.
