Duke Pratt Engineering Graduate Admission 2027 for International Students: Ranking, GRE, Funding and Deadlines
Duke Pratt is tied for No. 22 in the U.S. News 2026 engineering list. MEng round 1 closes 3 November 2026 and PhD deadlines run 1 to 15 December 2026; the GRE is optional for the MEng and most PhDs, and the projected 2026-27 PhD stipend is $43,775.

Duke Pratt engineering graduate admission for international students splits into two systems. PhD and research MS applications go through the Duke Graduate School, cost $105, and close between 1 and 15 December 2026 for fall 2027, depending on the department. Professional master’s applications (the Master of Engineering and Master of Engineering Management) go through Pratt itself, cost $75, and run in three rounds, the first closing on 3 November 2026.

The GRE is optional for the Master of Engineering in 2027 and for the BME, ECE and MEMS PhDs. Duke PhD students get a 12-month funding commitment, with a projected stipend of $43,775 for 2026-27, while a campus MEng costs $35,680 a semester in tuition. Pratt is tied for No. 22 in the U.S. News 2026 Best Engineering Schools list with Harvard and the University of Washington. Here is how each route works and what it costs.

Duke engineering ranking

U.S. News placed Duke’s Pratt School of Engineering in a three-way tie at No. 22 with Harvard and the University of Washington in its 2026 Best Engineering Schools list. Pratt is small next to big public engineering colleges. MEMS, for example, lists 31 faculty working with students, 91 PhD students and 50 MS students. That size means closer contact with faculty and fewer places, so a weak fit with the department shows quickly.

The MEng is a professional, coursework-based degree aimed at industry jobs. The MS is the research route and suits you if you might move into a PhD. Pick deliberately, because the two have different deadlines, fees and English rules.

Duke Pratt graduate admission requirements

MEng and MEM applications

  • Short answers: there is no separate personal statement; you answer programme-specific questions of up to 1,500 characters each.
  • Video introduction: required, up to three minutes, with 30 seconds to prepare for each prompt and one restart.
  • Resume: one to two pages; recent graduates should list internships.
  • Letters: three for the campus master’s, including at least one academic letter for recent graduates.
  • Transcripts: one scanned unofficial transcript per institution, PDF, under 1.5 MB. Official transcripts come only after admission, and a mismatch can cost you the offer.
  • Grades: upload your university’s grading scale if asked; you do not convert to 4.0. No minimum GPA, GRE or English score.

PhD and MS applications

The Graduate School asks for a US bachelor’s degree or equivalent from an institution accredited by its country’s education authority, a statement of purpose, a CV, recommendation letters and transcripts. BME, ECE and MEMS list the GRE as optional and an English test as required for applicants whose first language is not English. BME also recommends an optional recorded video, which can help international applicants show their spoken English. Neither route asks for a WES evaluation at the application stage.

English requirements and waivers

Graduate School scores for fall 2027 must be dated 1 August 2024 or later. If you are an MEng admit without a waiver, you must send a Duolingo score before 15 June, even if you applied with TOEFL or IELTS, and pay for that test yourself.

Duke Pratt application deadlines 2026-27

Programme (fall 2027)Deadline
ECE PhD1 December 2026 (guaranteed review; closes 25 Feb 2027)
BME PhD3 December 2026 (guaranteed review; closes 4 Mar 2027)
MEMS PhD11 December 2026 (guaranteed review; closes 8 Mar 2027)
CEE PhD15 December 2026

CEE MS10 January 2027
ECE MS16 January 2027
MEMS MS19 January 2027
BME MS1 February 2027
Materials Science and Engineering MS15 March 2027

After the guaranteed-review date, PhD files are read only if space and funding remain, so treat the first date as the real deadline. BME, ECE and MEMS also list a spring PhD intake with a 1 October date; the spring 2027 date has passed, so the next one is 1 October 2027 (based on this year’s date; confirm on the official page when the call opens).

MEng round 1 is close

The first MEng and MEM round closes on 3 November 2026. If your documents are not ready, round 2 on 19 January 2027 is the better choice than a rushed file.

Funding for Duke PhD and master’s students

Duke’s Graduate School says its PhD programmes provide a 12-month funding commitment. BME and MEMS report that 100% of PhD students receive aid, and ECE reports 99% of first-year PhD students. The 2026-27 rates below are projected until Duke’s trustees approve them.

Item2025-262026-27 (projected)
PhD stipend, year 2 onward (12 months)$42,500$43,775.16
First-year stipend, 10 months (Aug to May)$31,875$32,831.40
First-year stipend, 13 months (Aug to Aug)$42,500$43,775.16
PhD tuition, years 1 to 3, per semester$33,862$34,940
Student medical insurance$3,751.56$4,290

MEMS PhD students can also apply for the Thomas Lord Engineering in Service to Society Fellowship, which funds internships in government, policy and non-profits. Funding for master’s students is much thinner: MEMS reports aid for 10% of its MS students.

Master’s scholarships

  • Duke Mission Scholarships: up to 50% of tuition a year for selected students, plus up to $10,000 a year for research.
  • CEE scholarships: typically $20,000 to $30,000 for competitive MEng and MS students.
  • Hourly TA and campus jobs: usually 10 to 20 hours a week, often filled a week or two before the semester.
  • External award holders: Pratt supports recipients of awards such as Fulbright.

Pratt’s pages do not say whether international students are eligible for each scholarship, so ask the admissions office before you count on one.

Duke MEng tuition and cost of attendance 2026-27

ItemCampus MEngCampus MEM
Tuition per semester$35,680$36,225
Programme tuition$107,040 (30 credits over three semesters)$72,450 (eight required courses)
Estimated cost of attendance, 2026-27 year$103,260$104,350
Health insurance (fall charge)$4,290$4,290

The cost of attendance includes housing ($6,320 in fall and $7,900 in spring), food, local transport, books and personal costs. A three-semester MEng runs past one academic year, so budget for the third semester’s tuition and living costs on top. Duke confirms these figures each May.

STEM OPT after a Duke engineering degree

Engineering degrees are on the US Department of Homeland Security’s STEM Designated Degree Program List, so F-1 graduates can normally apply for the 24-month STEM extension after 12 months of OPT. The final answer depends on your I-20’s CIP code and an E-Verify employer; confirm with Duke Visa Services. Duke’s online graduate certificates do not lead to a student visa.

How to contact potential PhD advisers at Duke

With small departments, a faculty member who knows your name before the committee meets helps. Read recent papers from two or three Pratt faculty, write one specific email to each, and attach a one-page CV.

For illustration, an opening could read: “Dear Professor Adeyemi, I am applying to the Duke BME PhD for fall 2027. Your lab’s work on low-cost ultrasound connects with my final-year project, where I built a probe holder for a teaching hospital in Ibadan and tested image quality on 40 volunteers. Are you recruiting students for 2027?” The name and project are invented.

Writing your Duke application essays

For the MEng, 1,500 characters is about 250 words, so each answer needs one example and one link to the programme. State the problem, what you did, and the result with a number, then say which Duke course or track builds on it. The video is where you show spoken English and composure, so practise answering timed questions aloud. For the PhD, the statement of purpose should name the research question, the faculty you would work with and why your past work prepares you. Pick referees who can describe your work in detail; our recommendation letter guide explains what to ask them for.

Common mistakes international applicants make

  1. Applying to the wrong system: MEng goes through Pratt and MS through the Graduate School. If you apply to both, Pratt waives the MEng fee once you send proof of the Graduate School payment.
  2. Uploading a transcript that later differs: Duke can withdraw an offer if the official transcript does not match the scan.
  3. Converting the CGPA: upload your university’s grading scale instead. A 3-year degree is fine to submit, but explain its structure.
  4. Sending English scores you do not need: MEng applicants who qualify for a waiver should not submit scores.
  5. Missing the guaranteed-review date: late PhD files compete for whatever funding remains.
  6. Expecting a fee waiver: the Graduate School’s standard waiver is for US citizens and permanent residents. Departments may have a few waivers later in the fall.

Costs not covered

  • Application fees ($105 or $75) and test fees, including a Duolingo test after admission for some MEng admits.
  • Visa, SEVIS fee and flights.
  • A one-time $120 transcript fee in the first term.
  • Extra funds for a spouse or children, shown on the Graduate School cost page.
  • Summer living costs between MEng semesters.

Who should apply to Duke Pratt

The MEng suits graduates who want a short professional degree with many tracks, a round-based timeline and no GRE. The PhD suits research-ready applicants who want a small department and a funded 12-month package. I would not choose the MEng if you cannot show funds above $100,000, because scholarships cover part of tuition at best. If you are unsure between industry and research, the MS route keeps the PhD door open.

Sources and updates

I checked this guide on 29 October 2026 against Duke’s own pages: the Pratt master’s application instructions and deadlines page, the Pratt master’s tuition and financial aid pages (2026-27 costs and scholarships), the Duke Graduate School deadlines page, its application fee and English test pages, its tuition, fees and PhD stipend schedule, the Graduate School admissions policy in the bulletin, and the BME, ECE and MEMS programme pages. The rank comes from VnExpress International and UW News reports of the U.S. News 2026 Best Engineering Schools list (April 2026).
