The Vanderbilt Owen MBA is a two-year full-time MBA in Nashville, Tennessee, ranked No. 16 in the U.S. News 2026 Best Business Schools list and STEM designated since the Class of 2025. For fall 2027 entry, the Round 2 deadline is 6 January 2027, Round 3 closes on 10 March 2027, and international candidates must apply by 5 April 2027 at the latest. You need a GMAT, GRE or Executive Assessment score (or an approved waiver), two short statements of 400 and 300 words, a video response, one recommendation and a $200 fee.
Owen is one of the more accessible top-20 programs: U.S. News data shows it admitted 36.2% of applicants for fall 2025 entry. The newest class, the Class of 2028, has 126 students, an average GMAT of 666 and 28% international students. Tuition for 2026-27 is $76,700, and the full first-year budget adds up to about $113,537. Every figure in this Vanderbilt MBA guide was checked on Vanderbilt’s own pages on 29 October 2026.
Vanderbilt Owen MBA ranking
In the U.S. News 2026 Best Business Schools ranking, released on 7 April 2026, Vanderbilt’s Owen Graduate School of Management placed No. 16, tied with Carnegie Mellon Tepper. The published table was reported by Poets&Quants and Clear Admit. Owen is known for healthcare business, finance, human and organisational performance, and a small class where faculty and recruiters know students by name.
Vanderbilt Owen MBA acceptance rate and class profile
Vanderbilt does not print an acceptance rate on its class profile. Poets&Quants’ August 2026 analysis of U.S. News data gives 1,562 applications and a 36.2% acceptance rate for the class that entered in fall 2025, with a yield of 28.27%. The school’s profile of the class that entered in fall 2026 is below.
| Class of 2028 (entered fall 2026) | Figure |
|---|---|
| Class size | 126 students |
| International students | 28% |
| Countries represented | 18 |
| Average GMAT | 666 (middle 80%: 637 to 707) |
| Average GRE Verbal / Quant | 159 / 160 |
| Median undergraduate GPA | 3.5 |
| Average work experience | 6 years (middle 80%: 3 to 10) |
| Average age | 29 |
| Women | 24% |
| Undergraduate institutions represented | 109 |
The profile does not say whether the 666 average is on the classic GMAT or GMAT Focus scale. Given the range (637 to 707) it reads like a Focus average, but confirm with admissions if you are comparing your score. Six years of average experience is above many peers, so applicants with five to ten years of work are well within range here.
Vanderbilt MBA requirements for international students
The application is online. The list below comes from the Vanderbilt MBA admissions page and its application instructions.
- Degree: a four-year US bachelor’s degree or equivalent. Holders of three-year degrees are strongly advised to get a course-by-course evaluation from IEE or TEC.
- Resume: one page is usually enough.
- Statements: Statement One (400 words), Statement Two (300 words) and an optional explanatory statement.
- Video response: short, unscripted “small talk” style questions.
- Recommendation: one, preferably from a direct supervisor, client or project manager. Vanderbilt’s own form is preferred; the GMAC Common Letter of Recommendation is also accepted.
- Transcripts: unofficial transcripts from every college or university attended, with certified English translations where needed. Officials are required only after admission.
- Test: GMAT, GRE or Executive Assessment sent directly by the testing service, or an approved test waiver.
- English test: TOEFL, IELTS, Duolingo English Test or TOEFL Essentials, unless waived.
- Fee: $200.
- Proof of funds: a Preliminary Financial Declaration may be submitted with the application; bank statements are not needed at this stage.
Test policy and waivers
Official scores must reach Vanderbilt before your application counts as complete, which can take 10 to 14 business days. Waiver requests must be sent before the round deadline, ideally two weeks ahead. You cannot get a waiver after you have reported or sent a score, waivers are reviewed once per cycle, and there are no appeals.
English language requirement
Vanderbilt accepts TOEFL, IELTS, Duolingo and TOEFL Essentials, valid for two years, but does not publish minimum scores. You can skip the test if any of these applies to you:
- Your undergraduate degree is from a country where English is an official language. Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya, Uganda, South Africa and India all fall into this group.
- You have lived and worked for two or more years in such a country.
- You scored in the 90th percentile or higher on the verbal section of the GMAT or GRE.

| Round 3 | 10 March 2027 | 23 April 2027 | 12 May 2027 |
| International final date | 5 April 2027 | Rolling | Rolling |

Your file must be complete by the deadline. If anything on the checklist is still missing a week later, Vanderbilt moves you to the next round.

Vanderbilt MBA essays and how to answer them
| Statement | What it asks | Limit |
|---|---|---|
| Statement One | Your career journey so far, what led you to an MBA, two post-MBA career paths you want to explore, and the skills that will help you reach them | 400 words |
| Statement Two | A challenge or stressful situation you faced, how you responded and what you learned about yourself | 300 words |
| Optional explanatory statement | Gaps or other issues; bullet points are fine | No limit stated |
| Video response | Unscripted, conversational questions | Short answers |
Statement One: career journey and two paths
The unusual part is the request for two career paths. Pick two that share a logic, such as healthcare strategy consulting and corporate strategy at a hospital group, and explain what draws you to each. Spend about 150 words on your journey, 150 on the two paths and 100 on the skills you have and the ones Owen will add. Name a concentration or two (healthcare, finance, operations) so the committee sees you have read the curriculum.
Sample opening, for illustration: “I joined a Lagos pharmacy chain as a stock analyst in 2020 and spent the next five years watching good medicines fail to reach the patients who needed them.”
Statement Two: a challenge or stressful situation
Three hundred words is short. Use about 80 words for the situation, 140 for what you did and 80 for what you learned about yourself. The last part is what the prompt is really about, so be honest about a weakness the episode exposed.
Sample opening, for illustration: “Two days before our bank’s audit, I found that the loan figures I had reported to the board for six months were wrong.”
The video response
Vanderbilt calls this a chance to show your authentic self, speaking without a script. Practise talking about your hobbies, your city and your weekend for a minute at a time. Do not memorise answers; the committee wants to see how you talk with a classmate.
Interview format
Interviews are by invitation, sent on a rolling basis to applicants with complete files. You can interview virtually or on campus, and Vanderbilt says both count equally, so an international applicant loses nothing by interviewing online. The interview is behavioural and is run by MBA Recruiting and Admissions Fellows (current students) or admissions staff.
What the Vanderbilt admissions committee looks for
- Steady professional progress. The class averages six years of work, so depth of experience counts.
- Two career paths that make sense together, backed by real interest.
- Self-awareness, which Statement Two and the interview test directly.
- Collegiality. Owen markets a small, close community and looks for people who will add to it.
- Quantitative readiness from a test score or academic record.
Vanderbilt Owen MBA tuition and cost of attendance 2026-27
International students pay the same tuition. Vanderbilt lists these annual items for 2026-27; the total is my sum of them.
| Item (2026-27) | Amount |
|---|---|
| Tuition | $76,700 |
| Health insurance | $4,244 |
| Maintenance, student services, student health and transcript fees | $2,926 |
| Books and supplies | $500 |
| Loan fees | $2,110 |
| Housing ($1,781 a month for nine months) | $16,030 |
| Food | $7,488 |
| Personal expenses | $2,013 |
| Transportation | $1,526 |
| Total cost of attendance | $113,537 |
Tuition is subject to change each year, so expect the second year to cost a little more. Housing is budgeted for nine months only; if you stay in Nashville over the summer, add rent for those months.
Vanderbilt MBA scholarships for international students
All applicants are considered for merit scholarships automatically at admission. Awards range from $10,000 a year to full tuition. The school does not exclude international students from general merit aid, though some named endowed awards are restricted to US citizens.
| Award | Details |
|---|---|
| Merit scholarship | $10,000 a year up to full tuition; automatic consideration |
| Dean’s Scholars Program | Full tuition; selected from the incoming class |
| Forté Fellowship | For women; through the admission review |
| ROMBA Fellowship | For LGBTQ+ leaders; extra essay required |
| Partner scholarships (guaranteed for admits) | COLFUTURO and Corporación de la Unidad de Conocimiento Empresarial in Colombia (at least 50%); GUATEFUTURO, HONDUFUTURO, FUNED and FIDERH in Guatemala, Honduras and Mexico (at least 30% for the MBA) |
There is no partner arrangement for African countries at present, so African applicants rely on general merit awards. Applying in Round 2 with a strong test score is the most direct way to improve your award. For outside funding, see our list of American scholarships for international students.
Loans without a US cosigner
Federal loans are closed to international students, and most lenders on Vanderbilt’s recommended list need a creditworthy US cosigner. Vanderbilt names MPOWER and Prodigy as options that do not require a US cosigner. They are not on its recommended list, and the school notes that approval has depended on how much funding those lenders have available.
STEM designation and OPT
Vanderbilt announced in January 2025 that the entire MBA program is STEM designated, effective with the Class of 2025. That lets F-1 graduates add two years of STEM OPT to the standard 12 months, for up to 36 months of US work authorisation. An older Vanderbilt page for international applicants still mentions only three STEM concentrations; the 2025 announcement is the newer statement.
Vanderbilt MBA salary and employment
| Class of 2025 outcome | Figure |
|---|---|
| Full-time offers within 90 days of graduation | 87% |
| Average base salary | $148,962 |
| Average signing bonus | About $36,000 |
| Consulting | 29% |
| Financial services | 21% |
| Healthcare | 16% |
| Technology | 13% |
| Consumer products | 7% |
| Top employers (hires) | Amazon (12), Deloitte Consulting (7), Highspring Consulting (5), Wells Fargo Corporate & Investment Banking, Boston Consulting Group, EY, EY-Parthenon and UnitedHealth Group (3 each) |
Vanderbilt’s outcomes page gives the average salary but not the median, and it does not report results for international graduates separately. The 16% healthcare share is high for an MBA and fits Nashville’s large hospital and health-services industry.
Costs not covered by the budget
- The $200 application fee, test fees and score-sending fees.
- A course-by-course credential evaluation if you hold a three-year degree.
- The SEVIS I-901 fee and US visa fee.
- Flights, a rental deposit and furniture on arrival.
- Rent for the three summer months not in the nine-month housing line.
- A car or rides; Nashville’s public transport is limited.
- Recruiting trips, club dues and conferences.
Common mistakes international applicants make
- Requesting a test waiver after reporting a score. Vanderbilt will not consider it.
- Missing a checklist item. An incomplete file a week after the deadline moves to the next round.
- Treating 5 April 2027 as a target date. It is the last possible day, and scholarship money is thinner by then.
- Listing two unrelated career paths in Statement One. The committee wants to see a thread between them.
- Taking an English test you do not need. Check the official-language rule first.
- Assuming a US cosigner is optional for every loan. Only MPOWER and Prodigy are named as no-cosigner options.
Who should apply to Vanderbilt Owen
Owen suits experienced professionals (five years or more) who want consulting, finance or healthcare roles and value a small class. It is a strong fit if healthcare business interests you. With a 36.2% acceptance rate it works well as a target school alongside harder programs such as Tepper or Duke. It suits you less if you want a big-city tech job market on the West Coast, where UCLA Anderson or UW Foster have stronger ties.
