University of Chicago admission requirements for international students are almost the same as for US applicants: the Common App or Coalition Application, the UChicago Supplement (one long essay from a set of unusual prompts plus a short “why UChicago” essay), two teacher recommendations, a counselor report with your transcript, and proof of English unless you are exempt. Unlike Penn or Brown, UChicago is test-optional for every applicant, including students outside the US. The $75 fee is waived if you apply for need-based aid.
International aid at UChicago is need-aware, which UChicago calls “need-sensitive”, so your aid request can play a part in the decision. Once you are admitted, UChicago commits to meeting 100% of your demonstrated need, and its Odyssey Scholarship replaces loans with grants. UChicago admitted 4.48% of first-year applicants in the 2024-25 Common Data Set. For fall 2027 entry, Early Action and Early Decision I close on 1 November 2026, and Early Decision II and Regular Decision close in early January 2027. I checked the details on UChicago’s pages on 29 October 2026.
UChicago ranking and headline numbers
In the U.S. News 2027 Best Colleges edition, released on 22 September 2026, UChicago is tied at No. 9 among National Universities with Johns Hopkins and Northwestern. It sits just behind Penn (No. 7) and Duke (No. 8).
| Item | Figure |
|---|---|
| U.S. News rank | #9 (tie) National Universities, U.S. News 2027 edition |
| Acceptance rate | 4.48% (2024-25 Common Data Set) |
| Applicants admitted and enrolled | 1,955 admitted, 1,726 enrolled |
| Cost of attendance 2026-27 | $103,821 (UChicago estimate published via QuestBridge) |
| Aid for internationals | Need-aware, meets 100% of demonstrated need |
| Testing | Test-optional for all applicants |

UChicago acceptance rate and class profile
The 2024-25 Common Data Set shows 43,612 first-year applicants, 1,955 admits and 1,726 enrolled students, an acceptance rate of 4.48%. Yield is very high, which is one reason UChicago admits so few. It does not publish a separate international acceptance rate, and it does not publish its Early Decision rate either, so treat any “ED rate” you see online as an estimate.
About 76% of admitted and enrolled students submitted SAT or ACT scores. The middle 50% scored 1510 to 1560 on the SAT and 34 to 35 on the ACT. UChicago’s own international brochure says international students make up 24% of the student body and come from more than 100 countries.
UChicago tuition for international students in 2026-27
International students pay the same tuition as US students. UChicago’s financial aid site would not load fully when I checked, so the figures below are UChicago’s 2026-27 estimate as published on its QuestBridge partner page. Use them as a guide and check the cost page on UChicago’s financial aid site before you budget.
| Cost item (2026-27) | Amount |
|---|---|
| Tuition | $75,960 |
| Housing and food | $21,414 |
| Required fees | $1,995 |
| Books and supplies | $1,800 |
| Personal expenses | $1,950 |
| Travel | $702 |
| Total | $103,821 |
The travel figure is modest and built for domestic students, so a flight from Lagos, Nairobi or Delhi will cost more. UChicago requires health insurance; for aided students not covered by a parent’s plan, a UChicago grant covers the basic student plan, according to the same QuestBridge summary.
UChicago scholarships for international students: how need-based aid works
UChicago’s international aid follows these rules:
- Admission is need-sensitive for international students, so asking for aid can affect your chances.
- UChicago commits to meeting 100% of the demonstrated need of every admitted first-year, including international students.
- You must apply for aid when you apply for admission.
- The Odyssey Scholarship, which UChicago extended to international students, covers costs with grants instead of loans and also funds study abroad, tutoring and paid summer internships.
- Students are usually expected to contribute 20% of reported assets each year, and aid must be renewed every year.
UChicago has built its international aid budget through gifts, including a $35 million commitment for international undergraduates announced in 2019, and it later reported raising another $100 million in Odyssey funding for international students. If you want to compare full-need policies across top US schools, our guide to Duke University scholarships covers another need-aware, full-need university.
Aid forms and deadlines
UChicago lists its international aid forms and deadlines on the “International” page of its financial aid site, split by EA, ED I, ED II and RD. Older UChicago guidance names its own International Student Financial Aid Application. Check the current page for whether you also need the CSS Profile this year, and submit everything by the deadline for your round.
UChicago admission requirements for international students: the application parts
- Application: Common App or Coalition Application. You apply to the College as a whole, not to a major.
2. Fee: $75, waived for students applying for need-based aid.
3. UChicago Supplement: one extended essay chosen from several prompts, and one shorter essay on why you want UChicago.
4. Recommendations: two from teachers who taught you an academic subject, plus a counselor’s Secondary School Report with your transcript.
5. Optional extras: one more recommendation from a coach, mentor or community member, a video profile, and arts or research samples uploaded to the Portfolio section of your UChicago Account.
6. Tests: optional. If you submit, send scores as you received them, without superscoring. Official scores are only needed if you enrol.
7. English proof: unless you are exempt.
8. Mid-year report: from your counselor by 1 February, or as soon as possible after.
Testing policy: test-optional
UChicago has been test-optional since the Class of 2025 and says the policy covers students living outside the US. If you have a strong score, send it; most admitted students did. Accepted test dates are the October ACT and November SAT for EA and ED I, December for ED II, and the January SAT or February ACT for RD.
English requirements
UChicago accepts the TOEFL, IELTS, Pearson Test of English and the Duolingo English Test as proof of English. On the UChicago pages I could read, it does not publish minimum scores for undergraduates. In practice, admitted students at schools of this level usually score in the upper bands, so I would aim for scores close to what Penn or Columbia publish (TOEFL around 100 to 105, IELTS 7.0 to 7.5, Duolingo around 130 to 135).
UChicago deadlines for fall 2027 entry
Deadline warning
UChicago’s application plans page gives 6 January 2027 for ED II and RD, but its counselor FAQ says 2 January. Submit by 2 January 2027 so either date is safe.
| Plan | Application deadline | Decision | Reply by |
|---|---|---|---|
| Early Action (non-binding) | 1 November 2026 | Mid-December 2026 | 1 May 2027 |
| Early Decision I (binding) | 1 November 2026 | Mid-December 2026 | Mid-January 2027 |
| Early Decision II (binding) | 2 to 6 January 2027 | Mid-February 2027 | Early March 2027 |
| Regular Decision (non-binding) | 2 to 6 January 2027 | Late March 2027 | 1 May 2027 |
Supplemental materials can follow by 15 November for the early rounds and 15 January for the later ones. You can switch from EA to ED I by 1 December, or from a deferred EA or RD application to ED II by 15 January, by emailing admissions and uploading the ED agreement.
How to write the UChicago essays, with a sample opening
UChicago’s extended essay prompts are famous for being strange, and many are suggested by students. They reward curiosity, humour and clear thinking more than polish.
- Choose the prompt you can argue with. The best essays take an odd question somewhere unexpected and still make a real point.
- Think on the page. Readers like seeing you test an idea, change your mind or follow a tangent with purpose.
- Keep the “why UChicago” essay specific. Mention the Core curriculum, a particular course or tradition, and say what you would actually do with it. Avoid praising the ranking.
- Do not force humour. Playful is fine; trying to be funny in every line usually is not.
Sample opening, for illustration only:
“In my town, when NEPA takes the light, everyone hears the generators start in the same order. I spent one dry season mapping that order, and it taught me more about my neighbours than any census could.”
What happens after you apply
- UChicago Account: you get a portal where you upload extras, track documents and later see your decision.
2. Mid-year report: sent by your counselor by 1 February.
3. Decision: EA and ED I in mid-December, ED II in mid-February, RD in late March.
4. Aid letter: if you applied for aid on time, your award comes with or soon after your admission.
5. Waitlist: waitlisted students opt in through their account and must secure a place elsewhere by 1 May.
6. Enrolment: after you commit, send official scores (if you used them) and final documents, then receive your I-20 for the F-1 visa.
Common mistakes international applicants make
- Treating test-optional as “tests do not matter”. Most admits sent scores.
- Picking the safest extended essay prompt and writing a standard personal statement.
- A “why UChicago” essay that could be about any university.
- Missing the aid deadline for your round. UChicago expects you to apply for aid at admission.
- Applying ED I without running UChicago’s cost estimates with your family.
- Assuming the travel allowance covers an intercontinental flight.
Costs that aid doesn’t cover
- Your first flight to Chicago and part of later flights, since the travel allowance is small.
- Visa and SEVIS fees.
- Your share of assets: UChicago usually expects 20% of student assets each year.
- Winter clothing. Chicago winters are long and very cold.
- English and SAT or ACT test fees and score reports.
UChicago graduate admissions for international students
Graduate programmes at UChicago are run by each division and professional school: the Physical Sciences, Social Sciences and Humanities divisions, the Booth School of Business, the Harris School of Public Policy, the Law School and others. Each has its own deadlines, English test rules and funding. Many programmes set their own English proficiency rules, so read the requirements page for your programme.
Majors and campus life at UChicago
UChicago’s campus is in Hyde Park on Chicago’s South Side, a short train ride from downtown and next to Lake Michigan. Every undergraduate takes the Core curriculum, a shared set of courses in the humanities, social sciences and natural sciences. Economics is the best-known major, and you can combine majors and minors across the College. The academic year runs on quarters, so terms are short and fast.

Who should apply to UChicago
UChicago suits you if you love ideas for their own sake, enjoy writing and argument, and want a common core of reading before you specialise. It is a strong option if you cannot sit the SAT or ACT, or if your scores do not reflect your ability, because it is genuinely test-optional for international students.
Think twice if you want a relaxed pace (the quarter system is intense), if you dislike essay writing, or if you need a need-blind reading. Because admission is need-sensitive for internationals, pair UChicago with need-blind options in your list.

I checked this guide on 29 October 2026 against UChicago College Admissions (application plans and deadlines, counselor and educator FAQ, and the international announcement page), UChicago’s international student brochure, UChicago News on international aid gifts, and UChicago’s 2026-27 cost estimate on its QuestBridge partner page. Common Data Set figures for 2024-25 come from a published CDS summary, and the ranking from coverage of the U.S. News 2027 Best Colleges edition. Several UChicago financial aid pages would not load when I checked, so confirm aid forms and costs there before you apply. I will update this page when UChicago confirms its January deadline or changes its policies.
