UIUC Admission Requirements for International Students 2027: Acceptance Rate, Tuition, Scholarships and Deadlines

UIUC Admission Requirements for International Students 2027: Acceptance Rate, Tuition, Scholarships and Deadlines
UIUC admission requirements for international students: Common App with short Illinois essays, test-optional, a 38.1% admit rate (23.3% for Grainger Engineering), $62,146 to $72,976 cost for 2026-27, no need-based aid, and 1 Nov 2026 (EA) and 5 Jan 2027 (RD) deadlines.

UIUC admission requirements for international students are straightforward: apply through the Common App, self-report your courses and grades, write the Common App essay plus two or three short Illinois essays of about 150 words, prove your English, and pay the $75 application fee. The University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign is test-optional, so the SAT and ACT are your choice. For fall 2027 the Early Action deadline is 1 November 2026 and the Regular Decision deadline is 5 January 2027.

Illinois admitted 38.1% of first-year applicants for 2026, but your chances depend heavily on your major: the Grainger College of Engineering admitted 23.3% of first-choice applicants and Gies College of Business 22.5%. International students pay $62,146 to $72,976 for 2026-27 depending on the major, and Illinois states that need-based aid is not available to international undergraduates. I checked every figure on University of Illinois pages on 29 October 2026.

UIUC tuition for international students in 2026-27

Illinois charges international students a separate tuition rate, and many majors add a “differential” on top of base tuition. Engineering and business cost the most.

Cost item (2026-27, new first-year)InternationalOut-of-state USIllinois resident
Tuition and fees$42,248 to $53,078$41,206 to $49,618$18,530 to $24,018
Food and housing$15,858$15,858$15,858
Books and supplies$1,200$1,200$1,200
Other expenses$2,840$2,840$2,500
Estimated total$62,146 to $72,976$61,104 to $69,516$38,088 to $43,576

The ranges reflect the different tuition rates by major. Illinois guarantees resident tuition for four years, but for international students the board raised out-of-state and international rates by 7% to 14.5% for 2026-27, so expect your cost to change. Use the Illinois Cost Calculator for your exact major.

UIUC scholarships for international students

Illinois states that need-based financial aid is not available to international undergraduates, and you must show enough money for your whole period of study.

  • Need-based aid: none for F-1 or J-1 students. No CSS Profile, ISFAA or Illinois aid form applies.
  • Federal and state aid: not available on F or J visas.
  • Departmental awards: Illinois says international students may still be considered for departmental awards and alternative loans.
  • Grainger Engineering: the college has “limited first-year scholarships for international students” and lets continuing students apply in the spring of their first year. No amounts are published.
  • International Student and Scholar Services: lists a small number of scholarships and loans.
  • Honours and scholarship notification: students selected for honours or a scholarship hear by 1 April after admission.

Illinois does not publish award amounts for international first-years. If you need large funding, Illinois is the wrong first choice; look at need-blind and full-need schools in our best American scholarships for international students guide, or at universities such as Duke and Yale that fund international students.

UIUC admission requirements for international students: the application parts

  1. Common App: Illinois accepts only the Common App for first-year applicants.
  2. First-choice major and optional second-choice major: your review depends on these choices.
  3. Common App essay: 250 to 650 words on one of the seven prompts.
  4. Illinois essays: about 150 words each, two for your first-choice major (or for undeclared applicants) and one more if you list a second-choice major.
  5. Activities: clubs, jobs, family duties, volunteering and other involvement.
  6. Self-reported academic record: after you submit, Illinois emails a link to enter your courses and grades exactly as they appear on your transcript. Official transcripts are needed only if you enrol.
  7. Test scores: optional SAT or ACT.
  8. English proficiency: required unless you completed grades 10 to 12 in an approved English-speaking country.
  9. Application fee: $75. Fee waivers need your counsellor to send a waiver form.

Art, music, dance and theatre applicants have extra steps such as portfolios or auditions. Illinois does not work with private recruiting agents, so apply yourself.

Country guidance

Illinois has country-specific guidance for GCSE and A-Level students, the IB, India, China, Malaysia, Singapore, South Korea, Canada and others. If your country is not listed, the general rule is that you report every course and exam result yourself during the application.

Testing policy

Illinois is test-optional for the SAT and ACT. If you submit, report your highest ACT composite or SAT total and your highest section scores. The ACT writing test is not used.

If you send SAT or ACT scores to prove your English, Illinois will use those scores in every part of your review. If your SAT is weak, prove your English with TOEFL, IELTS or Duolingo instead and leave the SAT out.

English requirements

You must prove English proficiency unless you completed grades 10 to 12 in an approved English-speaking country, and Illinois says this requirement cannot be waived. Accepted proof:

  • TOEFL iBT, including the TOEFL iBT Special Home Edition for fall 2027
  • IELTS
  • Duolingo English Test
  • SAT or ACT

Scores must come from tests taken within two years of your intended entry term. The international requirements page I checked did not print minimum scores, so confirm your target score with Illinois admissions before you book.

Whether a country like Nigeria, Ghana or Kenya counts as an “approved English-speaking country” is decided by Illinois’s own list. If your country is not on it, take one of the tests.

UIUC deadlines for fall 2027

Illinois’s dates page lists these dates without a year; for a fall 2027 application they fall in late 2026 and early 2027. Submissions are due by 11:59 p.m. Central Time.

Early Action at Illinois is not binding. International students can use it, and I would, because you hear a month earlier and have more time for the I-20 and visa.

Deadline

Early Action closes on 1 November 2026 at 11:59 p.m. Central Time, with materials due by 7 November. Regular Decision closes on 5 January 2027.

How to apply to UIUC, step by step

  1. Create a Common App account and add the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign.
  2. Choose your first-choice major and decide whether to add a second choice.
  3. Book your English test if you need one, early enough to report by the materials deadline.
  4. Write the Common App essay and the Illinois essays.
  5. Complete the activities section.
  6. Pay the $75 fee and submit.
  7. Open the email from Illinois and self-report your courses and grades.
  8. Set up your myIllini account and check your status for missing items.

How to write the UIUC supplemental essays, with a sample opening

The Illinois essays are short, about 150 words each, and they ask about your major.

  • Essay 1: an experience from the last three or four years related to your first-choice major.
  • Essay 2: your goals after graduation and how this major helps you reach them.
  • Second-choice essay: why that major interests you, or your wider academic goals.

How to do them well:

  • Use one specific moment, not a summary of everything you have done.
  • Name what you learned and what you want to learn next at Illinois.
  • Make your goals realistic and specific. “Design low-cost irrigation sensors for smallholder farms” is better than “become a great engineer”.
  • Make the second-choice essay sincere. If you add a second major, readers check that you mean it.

Sample opening for the first-choice major essay (for illustration only):

“When our generator kept tripping during exam week, I traced the problem to one overloaded socket, then mapped every appliance in our flat to find out why.”

In 150 words you would then say what you learned about electrical loads and why that drew you to electrical engineering.

What happens after you apply

  1. myIllini account: track your application and upload anything requested.
  2. Decision: 29 January 2027 for Early Action, 26 February 2027 for Regular Decision. You may be admitted to your first-choice major, your second choice, or not admitted.
  3. Scholarship and honours news by 1 April 2027.
  4. Commit by 1 May 2027 with your deposit.
  5. Official documents: send official transcripts, exam results and test scores.
  6. Proof of funds: show Illinois you can pay your full cost, then receive your I-20.
  7. F-1 visa interview, then arrival and orientation in August 2027.

Common mistakes international applicants make

  • Picking a hard major as both choices. A second choice in a less selective college gives you a real fallback.
  • Sending a weak SAT as English proof. It will count in your whole review.
  • Errors in the self-reported record. If your final transcript does not match, Illinois can cancel your admission.
  • Expecting need-based aid. It is not available to international undergraduates.
  • Missing the materials deadline. It is six days after Early Action closes.
  • Using an agent. Illinois does not work with private recruiting agents.

Costs that aid does not cover

  • Health insurance, if your estimate does not include it.
  • Flights to Chicago and the shuttle or bus to Champaign.
  • Winter clothing: central Illinois winters are cold and snowy.
  • The F-1 visa fee and SEVIS I-901 fee.
  • Rising international tuition after your first year.
  • Summer housing if you stay for research or an internship.

UIUC graduate admissions for international students

Graduate applications go through the Graduate College, with each department setting its own deadline and requirements. The application fee is $90 for both domestic and international applicants, and international applicants are generally not eligible for fee waivers. Departments set their own English score rules. PhD students are often funded through assistantships that can include a tuition waiver; funding for master’s students varies by programme.

Majors, campus and city

Illinois admits first-year students into eleven colleges and schools. The best known are Grainger Engineering, which includes computer science, Gies College of Business, and Liberal Arts and Sciences. Other strong areas include agriculture, information sciences, media and the fine and applied arts.

The campus sits across the twin cities of Urbana and Champaign in central Illinois, about two to three hours by road or train south of Chicago. It is a college town with a large international community, which helps new students settle in.

Who should apply to UIUC

Apply if:

  • You want engineering, computer science, business or the sciences at a large research university.
