Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) admission requirements for international students come down to a Common App or RPI Application, your school transcript, one recommendation (ideally from a maths or science teacher), and an official English score of at least TOEFL 88, IELTS 6.5 or Duolingo 115 unless you qualify for a waiver. SAT and ACT scores are optional for fall 2027 and will stay optional through the fall 2030 cycle. RPI is far easier to get into than most US technology schools: its Common Data Set for fall 2025 shows an overall acceptance rate of about 67%, and about 56% for international applicants.
Money is the harder part. RPI’s 2026-27 cost of attendance is $90,076 a year before health insurance, and international undergraduates can get limited merit scholarships of up to $20,000 a year. For fall 2027, Early Decision I closes on 1 November 2026, Early Action on 1 December 2026 (with no application fee if you submit by then), and Regular Decision on 15 January 2027.
RPI at a glance for international applicants
- Ranking: #64 National Universities, U.S. News 2026 edition. RPI’s place in the 2027 edition was not confirmed when this guide was checked.
- Acceptance rate: about 67% for fall 2025 (14,356 applied, 9,655 admitted); international applicants about 56% (1,090 applied, 613 admitted), from RPI’s Common Data Set 2025-26.
- Testing: optional for fall 2027, except for the Physician-Scientist (B.S./M.D.) programme.
- English minimums: TOEFL iBT 88 (or 4.5 on the new scale), IELTS 6.5, Duolingo 115, PTE 59.
- Aid for international students: limited merit scholarships, up to $20,000 a year.
- Application fee: $70, waived for applications submitted by 1 December 2026.
- 2026-27 cost of attendance: $90,076, plus $2,160 for health insurance.
- Proof of funds for the visa: about $80,000 in liquid funds for one year, on RPI’s International Student Financial Statement.
RPI acceptance rate and class profile
RPI’s Common Data Set 2025-26 reports these first-year admission figures for fall 2025, including a residency breakdown that most colleges do not publish.
| Applicant group | Applied | Admitted | Admit rate |
|---|---|---|---|
| All first-year applicants | 14,356 | 9,655 | 67.3% |
| New York residents | 4,319 | 2,917 | 67.5% |
| Other US states | 8,947 | 6,125 | 68.5% |
| International | 1,090 | 613 | 56.2% |
International applicants are admitted at a lower rate than domestic ones. RPI does not explain the gap, but I suspect money plays a part, since every international student must show they can pay the full cost.
For academic profile, RPI’s Quick Facts page describes the class that entered in fall 2024. Among students who sent scores (testing was optional), the middle 50% scored 670 to 740 on SAT Evidence-Based Reading and Writing and 705 to 770 on SAT Math, and 53% ranked in the top 10% of their high school class. RPI had 5,665 full-time undergraduates in fall 2024. The maths scores tell you what RPI values: strong maths and science results matter more here than at a liberal arts college.
RPI admission requirements for international students
You can apply through the Common App or the RPI Application. International first-year applicants need:
- Official secondary school transcripts: with English translations if the originals are in another language.
- One letter of recommendation: from a counsellor or a teacher, preferably a maths or science teacher who knows you well.
- The Common App personal essay: this covers the essay requirement for most majors.
- A programme essay: only for the B.S./M.D. and Architecture programmes.
- An Architecture portfolio: only for the Bachelor of Architecture, due within 10 days of your application deadline.
- Official English test scores: sent directly by the testing agency, unless you are exempt.
- The Early Decision Agreement: only if you apply ED.
- SAT or ACT: optional, except for B.S./M.D. applicants.
RPI asks you to send only the required documents. Award certificates, extra diplomas and similar papers are not needed.
English proficiency requirements
| Test | RPI’s expected minimum |
|---|---|
| TOEFL iBT (including Home Edition) | 88, or 4.5 on the new 6.0 scale |
| IELTS Academic | 6.5 overall |
| Duolingo English Test | 115 |
| PTE Academic | 59 |
RPI does not accept self-reported English scores. The TOEFL institution code is 2757, and the name on your test must match your passport exactly. Plan to take the test by December of your final school year.
You do not need an English test if you meet one of RPI’s exemptions:
- SAT Evidence-Based Reading and Writing of 640 or higher, or ACT English of 22 or higher
- IB English A at Higher Level with a 6 or higher
- IGCSE, AS or A Level English at grade B or higher
- Cambridge B2 First or C1 Advanced score of 185 or higher
- Three or more years at a US secondary school (request the exemption through the form on your status page; RPI does not accept email requests)
- A high school diploma from a country on RPI’s English-medium list, which includes 21 Anglophone African countries plus the UK, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand and much of the Caribbean
If you finished secondary school in Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya or another English-speaking African country, check RPI’s list first; you may not need a test at all.
Testing policy
RPI is test-optional for fall 2027 and has said it will stay test-optional through the fall 2030 application cycle. The only exception is the Accelerated Physician-Scientist (B.S./M.D.) Program, which requires official SAT or ACT scores. You can self-report scores on the application or in the portal, but if you enrol you must send official scores for every result you reported.
Optional interviews
RPI does not require an interview. It accepts third-party interviews from InitialView, Duolingo English Test or Vericant, which you pay the provider for. If your English test score is borderline, a recorded interview can show your spoken English directly.
Fall 2027 application deadlines
| Plan | Application due | Binding? | Decision | CSS Profile and FAFSA priority date |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Early Decision I | 1 November 2026 | Yes | 12 December 2026 | 15 November 2026 |
| Early Action | 1 December 2026 | No | 30 January 2027 | 15 December 2026 |
| Early Decision II | 6 January 2027 | Yes | 16 January 2027 | 8 January 2027 |
| Regular Decision | 15 January 2027 | No | 6 March 2027 | 31 January 2027 |
| B.S./M.D. Program | 1 November 2026 | No | Early April 2027 | 15 November 2026 |
RPI does not run rolling admission for fall first-years. Deferred Early Decision and Early Action applicants are reviewed again with Regular Decision. Early Action is the round I would pick as an international applicant: it is non-binding, it gets you an answer by the end of January, and applications submitted by 1 December cost nothing.
Tuition and cost of attendance for 2026-27
| Item | Per year |
|---|---|
| Tuition | $66,300 |
| Fees | $1,676 |
| Food and housing | $18,870 |
| Books and supplies | $1,410 |
| Personal expenses | $1,280 |
| Transportation | $540 |
| Total cost of attendance | $90,076 |
| Health insurance (Major Medical), shown separately | $2,160 |
With health insurance, the full yearly budget is about $92,236. The transportation line ($540) will not cover flights from Africa or Asia, so add your own airfare.
Scholarships and financial aid for international students
RPI’s international admissions page says there are limited merit scholarship opportunities for international undergraduates, worth up to $20,000 a year. It also says every student who is not a US citizen or permanent resident must be ready to pay the full cost of attendance for the whole degree. Even with the largest international merit award, you would still need about $70,000 a year.
Merit awards RPI lists
RPI’s scholarships page names the Rensselaer Leadership Award, the Rensselaer Garnet Baltimore Award, the Rensselaer Recognition Award and the 2024 Bicentennial Award. It does not publish amounts for these or say which ones international students can hold. If you qualify for more than one RPI merit award, you receive only the single highest.
The Rensselaer Medal
The Rensselaer Medal is worth $40,000 a year, guaranteed for four years (five for the B.Arch.). You cannot apply for it. Participating high schools around the world nominate one outstanding maths and science student from their junior (second-to-last) year, usually by 1 May. RPI’s page does not say whether international medallists receive the full $40,000. If your school takes part, contact medal_program@rpi.edu to confirm before you build your budget on it.
CSS Profile and need-based aid
RPI asks for the CSS Profile and FAFSA only from students seeking need-based aid, and its pages describe need-based aid in terms of US citizens and permanent residents. International applicants should plan on merit aid only.
Proof of funds
If you are admitted and pay your enrolment deposit, you upload the International Student Financial Statement (ISFS) and supporting documents to the portal. RPI wants to see at least one year of liquid funding, about $80,000. RPI requires the ISFS from every student entering on an F-1 or J-1 visa.
Majors and academic strengths
RPI’s academic units are Architecture, Business, Engineering, Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences, IT and Web Science, and Science. Engineering and the sciences are at the centre, which is why RPI asks for a maths or science teacher’s recommendation. It also runs the Accelerated Physician-Scientist (B.S./M.D.) programme, which has its own 1 November deadline and requires SAT or ACT scores.
Campus and city
RPI’s campus is at 110 Eighth Street in Troy, New York, a small city on the Hudson River in New York’s Capital Region, close to Albany. Winters in upstate New York are cold and snowy, so budget for proper winter clothing in your first year.
How to write RPI’s essays
RPI’s official fall 2027 application page lists only two programme essays: B.S./M.D. applicants explain why they want a career in medicine, and Architecture applicants explain why they chose architecture. Third-party guides also report short RPI questions inside the Common App, such as why you are interested in RPI (250 words) and an extracurricular or work activity (300 words). RPI’s own page does not list these, so check the RPI section of your Common App before you start.
For any “Why RPI” answer:
- Start from a project you did: a robot, a code repository, a science fair entry or a repaired phone. RPI’s applicant pool is technical, so concrete building beats general enthusiasm.
- Connect it to something RPI has: a named lab, major or programme you have read about.
- Keep it tight: short answers reward one strong example over a list.
A short opening, for illustration only:
“Our school’s only 3D printer jammed every Friday. By the third week I had taken it apart, printed a replacement gear on the one good day it worked, and written a two-page guide that the Year 10 class still uses.”
What happens after you apply
- Check your portal: RPI posts missing items and decisions there.
- Send official English scores: self-reported English scores are not accepted.
- Decision day: 12 December (ED I), 30 January (EA), 16 January (ED II) or 6 March (RD).
- Deposit, then ISFS: pay the enrolment deposit and upload your financial statement and bank documents.
- I-20 and visa: the ISFS is required for students entering on F-1 or J-1 visas; once your I-20 arrives you can book the visa interview.
- Waitlist: if waitlisted, you opt in through the portal. Waitlist activity can start in April and run into May or June.
Common mistakes international applicants make
- Self-reporting an English score: RPI requires official scores sent by the testing agency.
- Taking an English test you did not need: check the exemption list and the English-medium country list first.
- Missing the free-application window: submit by 1 December 2026 and the $70 fee disappears.
- Applying ED without full funding: both ED rounds are binding, and RPI’s international aid tops out at $20,000.
- A humanities teacher’s letter for an engineering application: RPI asks for a maths or science teacher where possible.
- Underestimating proof of funds: you need roughly $80,000 in liquid funds for the first year alone.
Costs scholarships do not cover
- Health insurance ($2,160 for 2026-27)
- Flights to New York State and home again
- English test, SAT or ACT fees, and score-sending fees
- Optional interview fees paid to InitialView or Vericant
- The F-1 visa fee and the SEVIS fee
- Winter clothing and boots for Troy’s winters
- The roughly $70,000 a year left after a maximum merit award
Who should apply
RPI is a good fit if you are strong in maths and science, want engineering, computing, architecture or the physical sciences, and your family can fund most of the cost. The higher acceptance rate makes it a sensible target school beside reach schools such as MIT and Carnegie Mellon. If you need near-full funding, apply also to colleges that meet full need for international students; our list of the best American scholarships for international students is a good place to start, and the Duke and Yale guides explain how need-based aid works.

Graduate admissions at RPI
Master’s and PhD applicants apply through RPI’s graduate admissions office, not the undergraduate one, and each programme sets its own deadlines, tests and funding. The undergraduate merit cap of $20,000 does not apply to graduate funding such as assistantships, so check the department page and ask the graduate office about funding and English score minimums, which can differ from the undergraduate ones above.
