ESUT Department of Applied Biology and Biotechnology 2027/2028: Cut-Off Mark and Aggregate Breakdown

ESUT’s minimum UTME score for Applied Biology and Biotechnology in 2027/2028 is 160, and it has no published aggregate formula. See an honest aggregate breakdown, safe target, JAMB subjects, O’level rules, screening and careers.

The ESUT Applied Biology and Biotechnology cut off mark for 2026/2027 is 160 in the 2026 UTME. Enugu State University of Science and Technology’s official Post-UTME advert of 4 July 2026 did not name the course in its 180, 200, 220 or 240 bands, so the general 160 minimum for “other courses” applies. With 160 or more, ESUT as your institution and the right UTME subjects, you were eligible for this year’s online screening.

2027/2028 update: ESUT cut-off marks usually stay the same from one year to the next, so the figures on this page are what 2027/2028 candidates should plan with. They come from the latest official notice (2026/2027). If the 2027/2028 notice changes anything, we will update this page.

160 is only the entry gate. ESUT does not publish the final merit score for any course, and it does not publish an aggregate formula either, even though many candidates search for an “ESUT aggregate”. So this guide gives you an honest aggregate breakdown: the official part (your score against the minimum) and a clearly labelled comparison method. It also covers the cut-off history, a safe target score as advice, the JAMB subject combination and O’level rules, screening and CAPS steps, and what biotechnology graduates do.

Keep two numbers apart. The minimum UTME score (160) is the gate ESUT announces before screening; below it, the portal will not take your application for that course. The merit score is the lowest score actually admitted after ESUT ranks applicants against the places it has, and ESUT does not announce it for any course. Most of the confusion online about “ESUT departmental cut-off marks” comes from treating the first number as the second.

Applied Biology and Biotechnology has stayed at the general minimum in both years I could trace, while its two sister departments moved: ESUT named Biochemistry and Microbiology at 180 for 2026/2027. If you are flexible about the course, this helps. A candidate with 170 cannot be screened for Biochemistry or Microbiology at ESUT, but can be screened for this course.

Some blogs print much higher ESUT “cut-offs” for other courses without an ESUT document (Medicine at 314 on Legit.ng, for example). None gives an official figure for Applied Biology and Biotechnology. ESUT reviews its bands each session, so check the 2027/2028 advert.

ESUT Applied Biology and Biotechnology aggregate breakdown

ESUT’s advert sets a minimum UTME score per course and runs an online screening with no test. It gives no weights and no O’level grade points, so ESUT has no published aggregate. The honest breakdown has two parts. The first is official: how far your UTME score sits above 160. The second is a comparison tool: the 50:50 UTME and O’level method some other Nigerian universities use. Use it to see how your O’level grades can shift your position, not to predict ESUT’s decision.

UTME scoreAbove ESUT minimum (official)UTME ÷ 8 (out of 50)With O’level 35/50With O’level 42/50
1600205562
1751521.8856.8863.88
1903023.7558.7565.75
2054525.6360.6367.63
2206027.562.569.5

O’level points on this method: A1 = 10, B2 = 9, B3 = 8, C4 = 7, C5 = 6, C6 = 5, across five subjects. 35 out of 50 is roughly a B3, B3, C4, C5, C5 spread; 42 is mostly B grades with an A. Read across a row and you will see that seven extra O’level points are worth as much as 56 UTME marks on this method. If ESUT ranks on UTME alone, only the second column matters.

Safe target score for Applied Biology and Biotechnology at ESUT (my advice)

This is my judgement, not an ESUT rule. Applied Biology and Biotechnology draws fewer first-choice applicants than Biochemistry or Microbiology, but it also receives candidates redirected from health courses through CAPS. Those candidates often score 200 or more, which lifts the real competition above the minimum.

Your UTME scoreMy read for ESUT Applied Biology and Biotechnology
160 to 174Eligible for screening. Admission depends on how many stronger applicants there are.
175 to 189A fair chance, better with good Biology and Chemistry grades.
190 to 209A good chance. You would also clear the 180 minimum for Biochemistry and Microbiology.
210 and aboveComfortable for this course at ESUT.

For a 2027 attempt, my safe target for ESUT Applied Biology and Biotechnology is 185 or more, with credits in English, Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry and Physics. Scoring above 180 also keeps Biochemistry and Microbiology open.

Catchment and state of origin

ESUT does not publish a catchment list. It is owned by the Enugu State Government, so Enugu indigenes are its primary catchment, but it admits candidates from every state. The 45/35/20 merit, catchment and ELDS split you may have read about is federal university policy, and ESUT has not said it applies it. Plan to win on your score and your grades, wherever you come from.

JAMB subject combination and O’level requirements for ESUT Applied Biology and Biotechnology

RequirementApplied Biology and Biotechnology
UTME subjectsUse of English, Chemistry, Biology and Physics or Mathematics
O’levelFive credits: English Language, Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry and one of Physics, Health Science, Statistics or Geography
SittingsNot stated in ESUT’s advert; two sittings is the common ceiling
Direct Entry (general)Two A’level passes, one in Biology and one in Chemistry or Physics
Special requirementsNone published by ESUT

These come from the JAMB brochure entry for Applied Biology and Biotechnology as reprinted by Myschool (checked 29 October 2026). The only special remark on the page is for WUSTO; there is none for ESUT, so the general rule should apply. Confirm on JAMB’s e-brochure when you register.

The O’level list is a little wider than for Biochemistry: Physics is one of four options for the fifth credit. I would still take Physics, in the UTME and the O’level, because it keeps ESUT’s health courses and Applied Biochemistry open if CAPS moves you.

ESUT’s advert says Direct Entry candidates are screened online and must be cleared on JAMB e-facility by their former institutions. It does not publish DE grades, so if you hold an ND in Science Laboratory Technology (Biology option) or similar, confirm with the department which grade it accepts.

How ESUT screening works for Applied Biology and Biotechnology

These were ESUT’s 2026/2027 screening terms, taken from the official advert. The window has closed for this session, but they show you exactly what to prepare for the 2027/2028 round.

ESUT has not published an aggregate formula. The 2026/2027 advert sets a minimum UTME score per course and an online screening with no test, and it says nothing about weights or O’level grade points. So the only arithmetic you can do with official figures is to check how far you are above your course’s minimum. Some blogs quote a Post-UTME percentage for ESUT; that cannot be right for 2026/2027, because there was no Post-UTME test to score.

Worked example for a Applied Biology and Biotechnology candidate

Take Nnamdi, who scored 184 in the 2026 UTME with B3, B3, C4, C4 and C5 in the five O’level subjects that count for Applied Biology and Biotechnology.

  1. Eligibility check (official): 184 minus the 160 minimum = 24 marks above the line, so Nnamdi could apply.
  2. UTME half (illustrative method): 184 ÷ 8 = 23 out of 50.
  3. O’level half (illustrative method): 8 + 8 + 7 + 7 + 6 = 36 out of 50.
  4. Illustrative total: 23 + 36 = 59 out of 100.

Now take Chinwe, who scored 168 with B2, B2, B3, B3 and C4. On the same method that gives 21 + 41 = 62, ahead of Nnamdi despite a 16-mark gap in JAMB. If ESUT ranks on UTME score alone, the higher JAMB score wins instead. ESUT has not said which approach it uses, so the safe plan is to raise both your score and your grades.

To see why your O’level grades can still matter, here is a method some other Nigerian universities use: half the aggregate from the UTME (your score divided by 8, out of 50) and half from five O’level subjects (A1 = 10, B2 = 9, B3 = 8, C4 = 7, C5 = 6, C6 = 5, out of 50). ESUT has not published this or any other formula. I use it only to compare two candidates, never to predict an ESUT cut-off.

How to apply for Applied Biology and Biotechnology at ESUT, step by step

  1. Get your JAMB profile code: text NIN, a space and your 11-digit NIN (for example NIN 12345678901) to 55019 or 66019 from the phone number linked to your NIN. JAMB replies with the profile code you need to buy the UTME form.
  2. Register the UTME with the right subjects: pick Use of English, Chemistry, Biology and Physics and choose ESUT and Applied Biology and Biotechnology. ESUT’s 2026 advert also let candidates who chose another school apply after a JAMB change of institution, but choosing ESUT from the start saves you that step and its cost.
  3. Upload your O’level to CAPS: once your WAEC, NECO or NABTEB result is out, have it uploaded to your JAMB profile at an accredited CBT centre or JAMB office. ESUT’s advert makes this compulsory for every candidate, and a result that is missing on CAPS can hold your admission back even after ESUT picks you.
  4. Open the ESUT screening form: go to portal.esut.edu.ng, select the session, and under Regular Students open the Admission Screening Registration for that session (Direct Entry has its own form). Enter your JAMB registration number and fill the details form to generate an invoice.
  5. Pay ₦2,000: pay at a commercial bank through Enugu State IGR Pay Direct with the printed invoice and its reference number, or pay online with a debit card.
  6. Finish and print: return to the portal, re-enter your JAMB registration number, complete the form, confirm and submit, then print the acknowledgement slip. ESUT warns that false information leads to disqualification.
  7. Check and accept on CAPS: log in at efacility.jamb.gov.ng, choose Check Admission Status, then Access my CAPS and Admission Status. If ESUT has offered you Applied Biology and Biotechnology, accept it, then print your JAMB admission letter.
  8. Pay the acceptance fee on the ESUT portal: blogs report ESUT’s acceptance fee at about ₦26,000 (₦26,100 in some reports). ESUT’s 2026/2027 notices I checked do not state it, so confirm the amount on the portal before you pay, and keep the receipt for clearance.

Warning

Paying ESUT’s acceptance fee does not accept your JAMB offer. Accept the admission on JAMB CAPS first, because an offer left unaccepted on CAPS can be withdrawn, and ESUT cannot register you without it.

Myschool reported that ESUT’s 2026/2027 provisional admission list went up on JAMB CAPS on 13 October 2026. JAMB gives candidates four weeks to accept an offer and told public universities to finish admissions by 31 October 2026. If CAPS shows another course, such as Applied Microbiology or Applied Biochemistry, that is a separate offer: read the course name before you accept. Myschool also reported on 28 October 2026 that ESUT had released change of course and transfer forms for 2026/2027; I have not seen their terms, so ask the admissions office before you rely on them.

If a CAPS status confuses you, our JAMB CAPS guide explains each one. Candidates who chose another school can read the JAMB change of institution guide, and if you plan to sit the UTME again, start with when JAMB 2027 registration starts.

Studying Applied Biology and Biotechnology at ESUT

Applied Biology and Biotechnology is in ESUT’s Faculty of Biological Sciences, alongside Applied Biochemistry and Applied Microbiology. ESUT’s main campus is at Agbani in Nkanu West Local Government Area, Enugu State, and the sciences are generally placed there, though the pages I checked do not confirm the department’s building. B.Sc. degrees in this field normally run for four years.

The course covers the whole of biology, plants, animals and microbes, then turns it toward use: improving crops and livestock, producing food and medicines with living cells, protecting the environment and working with genes. ESUT has not published its course outline, so the list below is the usual shape of the degree under NUC standards:

  • Foundations: general biology, chemistry, physics and mathematics in 100 level.
  • Plant and animal biology: botany, zoology, physiology, taxonomy and ecology.
  • Genetics and molecular biology: heredity, DNA, gene cloning and genetic engineering.
  • Biotechnology: plant tissue culture, fermentation technology, bioprocessing and biofuels.
  • Environmental and agricultural applications: pest management, bioremediation, conservation and biosafety.
  • Lab and field methods: microscopy, biostatistics and field trips, ending in SIWES and a final-year project.

Accreditation: After the National Universities Commission’s 2024 exercise, ESUT reported full accreditation for programmes in its Faculties of Law, Engineering, Sciences, Environmental Science, Education and Administration (Enugu State Government, 21 May 2025). That report names faculties, not programmes, and the old sciences faculty has since been split into Biological and Physical Sciences in ESUT’s 2026/2027 advert. I found no separate programme-level result for Applied Biology and Biotechnology, so ask the department to confirm its NUC status at clearance.

Career paths after Applied Biology and Biotechnology

  • Agricultural research and seed or crop improvement, including with national research institutes.
  • Quality control in food, beverage, brewing and pharmaceutical companies.

Mistakes Applied Biology and Biotechnology applicants make

  • Paying anyone for an “ESUT aggregate calculator”: ESUT has not published a formula, so no calculator can give you ESUT’s real number.
  • Treating 160 as safe: redirected health-course candidates push the real competition higher.
  • Skipping Physics: it is optional here, but it keeps more ESUT courses open.
  • Forgetting the CAPS upload: ESUT’s advert makes it compulsory for every candidate.
  • Late awaiting results: results released after 30 September 2026 were not accepted.
