The GOUNI Social Studies Education cut-off mark is 150 in the UTME. Godfrey Okoye University, Enugu, published 150 as the minimum JAMB score for all its Education courses in 2026/2027, and Social Studies Education is one of them. That is also JAMB’s national floor for universities, so a candidate with 150 or more and the right O’level can apply, and the GOUNI form for this course costs nothing.
2027/2028 update: GOUNI cut-off marks usually stay the same from one year to the next, so the figures on this page are what 2027/2028 candidates should plan with. They come from the latest official notice (2026/2027). If the 2027/2028 notice changes anything, we will update this page.
When you register for the UTME, the course is called Education and Social Studies on JAMB’s list for GOUNI. Social Studies Education is on GOUNI’s 2026/2027 list of available programmes and on its Faculty of Education page, so this is a course the university is actively admitting into.
Below you will find the official figure and what it means, a safe target score, the UTME subjects (they are more flexible than most courses), the O’level rule that catches many applicants, GOUNI’s online admission process with worked examples, and what the degree leads to.

Is 150 enough for Social Studies Education at GOUNI?
On GOUNI’s own terms, yes. The 2026/2027 admission page lists minimum JAMB scores as Medicine and Surgery 200, Nursing 180, Law 200, Architecture 150, Computer Science 150, Education 150 and other programmes 150. Social Studies Education falls under Education, so 150 is the line. AbsTechConnect repeated the same figures on 24 May 2026, but that is a blog, so I rely on GOUNI’s page.
GOUNI does not publish merit lists or a departmental cut-off, and I found no sign that Social Studies Education runs above the faculty minimum. Teaching courses at private universities rarely fill up with high scorers, so in practice your O’level and your choice of institution matter more than a few extra marks. That is my reading of how these courses usually fill. GOUNI has not released applicant numbers.
GOUNI Social Studies Education cut-off history
| Session | Figure | What it is | Status |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2026/2027 | 150 | Minimum UTME score for Education courses | Official GOUNI form page |
| 2026/2027 | 150 | Same figure repeated by a blog | AbsTechConnect, 24 May 2026 (unofficial) |
| 2025/2026 | Not found | No GOUNI notice for this session reached | Unverified |
If a site shows you a different “GOUNI Social Studies cut-off”, such as 180 or 200, ask where it came from. GOUNI’s only published figure for Education is 150.
Safe target score for GOUNI Social Studies Education (my advice)
| Your UTME score | My read for GOUNI Social Studies Education |
|---|---|
| Below 150 | Not eligible at any Nigerian university in 2026/2027 |
| 150 to 159 | Eligible at GOUNI and Coal City University if your O’level is complete |
| 160 to 179 | Comfortable at GOUNI, and it opens UNN’s Social Science Education, which screens from 160 |
| 180 and above | Strong at every Enugu option for this course |
For the 2027 UTME, I would aim for 160 or more. It costs little extra study, and it keeps UNN Social Science Education open as a public university backup. GOUNI is private, so no catchment area or state quota applies to you.
UTME subjects and O’level for Social Studies Education at GOUNI
| Requirement | Social Studies Education at GOUNI |
|---|---|
| UTME subjects (JAMB rule) | Use of English plus any three of Christian Religious Knowledge, Economics, Geography or Physics, Government, History and Islamic Religious Studies |
| O’level (JAMB rule) | Five credits including English Language plus two Arts or Social Science subjects |
| GOUNI remark in the brochure | “GOUNI requires ‘O’ Level credit pass in Mathematics” |
| GOUNI’s own form page | Five credits in the course’s required subjects, including English and Mathematics |
| Direct Entry (JAMB rule) | NCE in Social Studies from a recognised college, or two A-level passes in relevant subjects |
| GOUNI Direct Entry note | Apply with the current JAMB Direct Entry form |
| JUPEB combination at GOUNI | CRS, Economics and Government |
Picking your three UTME subjects
This is one of the most flexible combinations on JAMB’s list. You choose any three from six options, so a science student with Physics and Geography, an arts student with CRK and History, and a commercial student with Economics and Government can all qualify. Note that Geography and Physics are grouped together, which means you count only one of them toward your three.
My suggestion is Government, Economics and CRK, or Government, History and Economics. Government and Economics line up with GOUNI’s JUPEB combination for this course, and both are central to what you will teach. Literature in English is not on the list, so do not use it as one of your three for this course.
The Mathematics trap
JAMB’s base O’level rule for Education and Social Studies does not name Mathematics. GOUNI’s remark in the brochure does, and so does its own admission page. A Mathematics pass (D7 or E8) is therefore not enough at GOUNI. Present five credits that include English Language and Mathematics, plus Government, Economics, Civic Education, CRS, History or Geography. If you can, get them in one sitting. GOUNI has not said whether it accepts two sittings for UTME entrants into this course.
How GOUNI admission works for Social Studies Education
GOUNI’s 2026/2027 admission page describes an online application followed by an e-mailed decision within three working days. It mentions no written Post-UTME test or interview for undergraduates. There is no published aggregate formula either, so the checks are simple: your UTME score against 150, your UTME subjects against JAMB’s rule, and your O’level against JAMB’s rule plus GOUNI’s Mathematics remark.

Worked example for a Social Studies Education applicant
Chinonso scored 162 in English, Government, Economics and CRK. His WAEC result from one sitting has C4 in English Language, C6 in Mathematics, B3 in Government, C5 in Civic Education, B2 in CRS and C6 in Economics.
- Score check: 162 minus 150 = 12. He clears GOUNI’s minimum by 12 marks.
- Subject check: Government, Economics and CRK are all on JAMB’s list for Education and Social Studies.
- O’level check: he has English Language, Mathematics and more than two Arts or Social Science credits. GOUNI’s Mathematics remark is met.
- What I would tell him: apply as soon as the form opens and accept on CAPS once the offer shows. With 162 he could also keep UNN’s 160 in view.
Ifeoma scored 174 in English, Literature in English, Government and CRK, and has a D7 in Mathematics. Her score is fine, but Literature is not one of the six JAMB subjects for this course, and her Mathematics grade fails GOUNI’s credit rule. I would tell her to fix the Mathematics through a WAEC or NECO resit first. For the subject problem, she should ask GOUNI admissions by e-mail before assuming anything, or look at GOUNI English and Literary Studies Education, which suits her Literature background.
How to apply for Social Studies Education at GOUNI
- Get your JAMB profile code: text NIN, a space and your 11-digit NIN to 55019 or 66019 from the phone line linked to your NIN.
- Register the right course: pick Godfrey Okoye University and the course exactly as JAMB lists it, Education and Social Studies, with the correct UTME subjects.
- Fix your choice if needed: GOUNI says candidates who did not choose it first must do a JAMB change of institution to GOUNI. Our change of institution guide walks you through it.
- Upload your O’level to CAPS: do this at a JAMB-accredited centre, and check that every grade shows correctly on your e-Facility profile.
- Fill GOUNI’s online form: open the Fill Admission Form page on gouni.edu.ng and apply for Social Studies Education. Use an e-mail address you check daily, because the decision comes by e-mail.
- Form fee: free for Social Studies Education. Anyone who asks you to pay for this form is not GOUNI.
- Wait for the e-mail: GOUNI says it replies within three working days of submission.
- Accept on CAPS: log in at efacility.jamb.gov.ng, open Check Admission Status, then Access my CAPS, and accept the offer. Our JAMB CAPS guide explains each status.
- Pay fees the right way: after an offer, GOUNI asks students outside Medicine, Nursing and Law to pay acceptance, tuition, ICT and other fees. Use only GOUNI’s official online payment platform.
Warning
GOUNI tells applicants to pay only through the university’s official online payment platform and says money paid into a personal account is at the payer’s own risk. Nobody can sell you a GOUNI admission slot. Every genuine offer shows on JAMB CAPS.
For the 2026/2027 cycle, JAMB set 30 November 2026 as the admission deadline for private universities, and GOUNI repeated that date in its news post of 12 May 2026. That window runs until 30 November 2026. JAMB has not announced the 2027/2028 dates yet; they normally come after the UTME, so 2027 candidates should watch for them then.
Direct Entry candidates with an NCE in Social Studies, or two relevant A-level passes, apply on JAMB’s Direct Entry form and then fill GOUNI’s online form the same way. GOUNI also runs an on-campus JUPEB programme for candidates who want A-level passes first; its official page gives the Social Studies Education combination as CRS, Economics and Government.
What you study in Social Studies Education
Social Studies Education trains you to teach Social Studies and Civic Education, mainly at junior secondary level, where both are core subjects. The degree mixes content from several social sciences with education courses and supervised teaching. GOUNI has not published the award title, course list or duration for this programme on the pages I read, and I did not find a GOUNI curriculum PDF for it. In Nigeria, such degrees usually take four years for UTME entrants, with Direct Entry students starting at 200 level.
- Social science content: citizenship and civic education, Nigerian government and politics, social and economic geography, population and family life, and contemporary social issues.
- Education core: educational psychology, sociology and philosophy of education, curriculum studies, and measurement and evaluation.
- Teaching methods: how to teach Social Studies and Civic Education, lesson planning, and use of instructional materials.
- Teaching practice and project: a supervised placement in a school, then a final-year research project.
GOUNI’s Faculty of Education page, published on 17 February 2026, lists Social Studies Education among its 11 programmes, with Rev. Br. Prof. Gregory Ekene Osuji as dean.
Careers after Social Studies Education
Most graduates teach Social Studies, Civic Education or Government in secondary schools. Others work in school administration, community development, NGOs running civic and peace education, and public service roles that take education graduates. A master’s degree in Social Studies Education or a related field opens lecturing posts in colleges of education.
One more thing for anyone training to teach: an education degree on its own does not license you to teach in Nigeria. Graduates register with the Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN), which also runs a Professional Qualifying Examination. Ask GOUNI’s Faculty of Education how it prepares final-year students for that step.
Accreditation
GOUNI’s accreditation page says all its programmes have NUC accreditation, but it names no programmes or dates. Social Studies Education was not among the 13 GOUNI programmes reported to have earned full NUC accreditation in August 2021, and I found no separate NUC result for it: NUC’s online results PDF cuts off before universities starting with G, and searches turned up no NUC report page for this course. Treat its NUC status as not confirmed and ask GOUNI admissions before you pay fees.
Other options if GOUNI does not work out
| Option | Minimum UTME | Why consider it |
|---|---|---|
| Coal City University Education and Social Studies | 150 | Private, in Enugu; same JAMB course name |
| UNN Social Science Education | 160 | Federal university; lower fees |
| GOUNI Political Science Education | 150 | Same faculty; Government-based subjects |
| GOUNI Economics Education | 150 | Same faculty; needs Economics and Mathematics in the UTME |
If you registered a different course and want to switch to Education and Social Studies, our JAMB change of course guide explains the steps. Writing the UTME again in 2027? Check when JAMB 2027 registration starts.
Mistakes Social Studies Education applicants make
- A pass in Mathematics: JAMB’s base rule does not ask for it, but GOUNI does. Get a credit.
- Literature in English as a UTME subject: it is not among the six options for this course.
- Counting Physics and Geography as two subjects: JAMB groups them, so they fill one slot between them.
- Leaving GOUNI as second choice: GOUNI asks for a change of institution before it admits you.
- O’level missing on CAPS: JAMB cannot process the admission until your result is uploaded.
