Gregory University Cut-Off Mark for Law 2027/2028: Requirements, Subject Combination and Screening

Gregory University has no separate Law cut-off; JAMB’s 150 floor applies and I would aim for 200 or more. Gregory is on the CLE approved list (August 2026), but its NUC Law result is not confirmed. See subjects, O’level rules and screening.

The Gregory University cut off mark for Law is not published as a separate figure. Gregory set 140 as its general minimum UTME score in the 2024/2025 and 2025/2026 notices, but JAMB’s minimum for universities in 2026 is 150, so 150 is the least you can apply with. For Law I would aim for 200 or more, because the Council of Legal Education caps how many Law students a university can take each year. Law is on JAMB’s list of Gregory courses, and you register it simply as Law.

2027/2028 update: Gregory University cut-off marks usually stay the same from one year to the next, so the figures on this page are what 2027/2028 candidates should plan with. They come from the latest notices Gregory has published (2024/2025 and 2025/2026) and JAMB’s 2026 national minimum, because no 2026/2027 Gregory notice with a score was available. If the 2027/2028 notice changes anything, we will update this page.

Law needs two approvals. The Council of Legal Education (CLE) lists Gregory University, Uturu at number 51 on its list of universities approved to run Law, dated 14 August 2026, with no moratorium against it. NUC is the other regulator, and I could not find an NUC accreditation result for Gregory’s Law programme: there is no NUC report page for it, and Gregory’s section of NUC’s 1990 to 2025 results publication would not load. So the CLE approval is confirmed and the NUC grade is not. If you want a Law school in Abia with both on record, Abia State University (ABSU) is on the CLE list at number 1 and NUC’s results publication shows its Law programme with full accreditation running to 2029. Amadeus University (Amazi), Lux Mundi University (Umuahia) and Nigerian-British University (Asa) are also on the CLE list.

Gregory has never published a separate figure for Law. The 140 in both notices covered every course. JAMB raised the floor for universities to 150 at its May 2026 policy meeting, so no university can admit a candidate below 150 in the 2026 cycle, and I would not expect the floor to fall back for 2027. Treat 150 as the line you must cross and anything above it as your margin.

Safe target score for Law at Gregory (my advice)

Law is usually the most competitive non-medical course in any Nigerian university, and Gregory’s intake is small. An undated CLE list of accredited universities and quotas gives Gregory a quota of 50 Law students a year, against 130 for ABSU. With a fixed number of places, the university fills Law with the strongest applicants and offers others a related course. The bands below are my judgement, not a Gregory rule.

Your UTME scoreMy read for Gregory Law
Below 150Not eligible in the 2026 cycle
150 to 179Eligible to apply, but you may be offered Political Science, International Relations or another course
180 to 199Possible if your O’level is strong and in one sitting
200 to 229Competitive
230 and aboveStrong

UTME subject combination and O’level for Gregory Law

RequirementLaw
UTME subjectsUse of English plus any three Arts or Social Science subjects
My subject adviceLiterature in English, Government and CRS or Economics
O’levelFive credits including English Language, Literature in English and Mathematics
SittingsNot more than two (Gregory’s 2025/2026 notice)
Direct EntryTwo A level passes in Arts or Social Science subjects, or NCE, ND or a first degree at Second Class Lower
Gregory-specific remarkNone in the brochure reprint

These rules come from the JAMB brochure entry for Law as reprinted by Myschool. JAMB’s general line for the UTME is any three Arts or Social Science subjects, so Literature in English is not compulsory in the exam itself under that line. Several universities, including UNN, UNIBEN and DELSU, add a remark asking for Literature; Gregory has no remark at all. I would still take Literature in the UTME. You need a Literature credit at O’level anyway, and a Law department reading your form will expect it.

The O’level line is stricter than many candidates think. It asks for credits in English Language, Literature in English and Mathematics. Some universities accept a pass in Mathematics through a brochure remark (Uyo, Madonna, BIU and UNIBEN among them), but Gregory is not named in that remark, so get a Mathematics credit. Gregory’s 2025/2026 notice allowed two sittings and I found no Gregory rule demanding one sitting for Law. If you have a choice, one sitting still reads better when places are this few.

Direct Entry candidates should know that the general rule accepts a first degree at Second Class Lower, NCE or ND as well as A levels. Gregory has not published its own DE rules for Law, and other universities on the same page refuse NCE or ND outright, so ask Gregory’s admissions office before you buy a DE form.

How Gregory University screening works for Law

Gregory runs an online post-UTME registration. The details below come from the university’s 2024 notice and the 2025/2026 notice as reprinted by Myschool. I could not find 2026/2027 dates or a new fee, so treat the fee as last year’s figure.

Worked example for a Law candidate

Gregory has not published how it ranks candidates, so there is no official aggregate to calculate. You can still check two things: how far your score sits above JAMB’s floor and my target, and whether your O’level meets the Law rule. The method below is my illustration, not a Gregory formula.

Take Chiamaka, who scored 214 with English, Literature in English, Government and CRS, and has B3 in English, B2 in Literature, C5 in Mathematics, B3 in Government and C4 in CRS from one sitting.

  1. National floor: 214 minus 150 = 64.
  2. Against my safe target: 214 minus 200 = 14. She is inside the competitive band.
  3. O’level check: English, Literature and Mathematics are all credits. That meets the rule.
  4. What I would advise: register early on the portal and keep Law as her course.

Emeka scored 188 but has only a pass in Mathematics. His score is enough to apply, but the missing Mathematics credit is the bigger problem, because the general Law line asks for it and Gregory has no waiver remark. He should resit Mathematics in the next WAEC or NECO, and upload the new result before CAPS recommendations close.

How to apply for Law at Gregory University, step by step

  1. Get your JAMB profile code: text NIN, a space and your 11-digit NIN to 55019 or 66019 from the phone line linked to your NIN.
  2. Register the UTME correctly: pick Law as the course and Use of English, Literature in English and two other Arts or Social Science subjects as your subjects, with Gregory University, Uturu as your first choice.
  3. Fix your choice if needed: if Gregory was not your first choice, do a JAMB change of institution before you register for screening. The 2025/2026 notice was for candidates who chose Gregory first.
  4. Upload your O’level to CAPS: do this at a JAMB-accredited CBT centre once your WAEC, NECO or NABTEB result is out. A university cannot recommend you on CAPS without it.
  5. Register for screening: on the Gregory post-UTME portal, fill the form, upload your passport photograph (PDF), UTME result and O’level result, then pay the screening fee online.
  6. Watch CAPS: log in at efacility.jamb.gov.ng, open Check Admission Status and then Access my CAPS. Our JAMB CAPS guide explains each status.
  7. Accept on CAPS: accept the offer, print your JAMB admission letter, then follow Gregory’s instructions for the acceptance fee and clearance. I did not find Gregory’s acceptance fee in any source, so confirm the amount on the official portal before paying.

Warning

Gregory University tells applicants to pay only through its official portals and says it has no authorised agents. Every genuine admission shows on JAMB CAPS, so ignore anyone selling a “slot” or a “special list”.

For the 2026/2027 cycle, JAMB set 30 November 2026 as the admission deadline for private universities, according to the News Agency of Nigeria (11 May 2026). JAMB also said admissions done outside CAPS are illegal. The phone lines on Gregory’s 2024 admission notice were 0806 094 4681 and 0803 733 3920.

Studying Law at Gregory University

Gregory University is a private university licensed in 2012 and sited at Amaokwe Achara, Uturu, in Isuikwuato Local Government Area of Abia State. Its founder is Prof. Gregory Ikechukwu Ibe. The university lists twelve colleges on its website and says it runs over 55 programmes. A Voice of Nigeria report in September 2026 named Prof. Cele U. Njoku as Vice-Chancellor.

Law sits in Gregory’s College of Law, one of the twelve colleges on the university’s menu. AdmitNode describes the college as having departments of Private Law and Public Law. Gregory has not published the duration on any page I reached; an LL.B in Nigeria normally takes five years, followed by a year at the Nigerian Law School before you are called to the Bar.

The CLE notice of 14 August 2026, signed by the Council’s Secretary, Aderonke O. Osho, lists 122 universities approved to admit Law students. Gregory University, Uturu is number 51 and carries no remark. Three universities on the list carry admission moratoriums (Baze University, Lead City University and the Nigeria Police Academy), and Gregory is not one of them. Without this approval you could not go on to the Nigerian Law School: the CLE has warned that graduates of unapproved Law programmes will not be admitted to the Nigerian Law School.

NUC accreditation

I found no NUC report page for Gregory’s Law programme, and NUC’s 1990 to 2025 results publication stops loading before the G section. A Voice of Nigeria report in September 2026 said NUC’s 2025/2026 exercise at Gregory covered Law among other programmes, but it gave a result only for Pharmacy. Ask the College of Law for its current NUC accreditation letter before you pay the acceptance fee. For comparison, these Abia universities are on the same CLE list:

If you need to switch to Law from another course on your JAMB profile, read our guide to JAMB change of course.

Mistakes that cost Law applicants

  • Planning with 140: JAMB’s 150 floor applies now, and Law needs far more than the floor.
  • No Literature or Mathematics credit: both are in the O’level line for Law and Gregory has no waiver.
  • Choosing a university off the CLE list: check the current list before you accept any Law offer, wherever it comes from.
  • Gregory not as first choice: fix it with a change of institution before screening.
  • Accepting on CAPS and stopping there: the acceptance fee and clearance at Gregory are separate steps.

If you missed out this year, read when JAMB 2027 registration starts.
