SUMAS Genetics and Biotechnology Cut-Off Mark 2027/2028: Entry Requirements and Screening

Genetics and Biotechnology at SUMAS needs 150 in the UTME for 2027/2028, holds full NUC accreditation and was on the October 2026 supplementary list. Requirements, JAMB subjects, screening example and careers.

The SUMAS cut off mark for Genetics and Biotechnology in 2026/2027 is 150 in the UTME. The State University of Medical and Applied Sciences (SUMAS), Igbo-Eno, Enugu State, set that general minimum for all its programmes in the 2026/2027 Post-UTME and Direct Entry notice, the same figure it used in 2025/2026. Genetics and Biotechnology was also on the SUMAS supplementary admission list in October 2026, open to candidates with 150 or more in the 2026 UTME.

2027/2028 update: SUMAS cut-off marks usually stay the same from one year to the next, so the figures on this page are what 2027/2028 candidates should plan with. They come from the latest official notice (2026/2027). If the 2027/2028 notice changes anything, we will update this page.

There is no departmental cut off for Genetics and Biotechnology at SUMAS. The university has not published one for any year, and it has not released an aggregate formula, scores on its merit lists, or catchment and ELDS lists. The programme does hold full NUC accreditation, granted after the 2025 exercise. Below you will find the entry requirements, the UTME subject combination, how screening is likely to work with a worked example, my safe target score, and what the course leads to.

The 150 lets you into screening, and admission still depends on how you rank. A departmental cut off is the lowest score actually admitted, and SUMAS has not released that for Genetics and Biotechnology. Its batch lists show masked JAMB numbers by course without scores. The general minimum can change after each JAMB policy meeting, so check the 2027/2028 SUMAS notice when it comes out. If a website quotes an “official” Genetics cut off for SUMAS, ask where it came from.

Genetics and Biotechnology on the supplementary list

On 17 October 2026, Myschool and FreshNote reported a SUMAS supplementary admission exercise for courses that still had places after the main batches. Genetics and Biotechnology was on it. I could not find the notice on sumas.edu.ng, so the details below are as reported.

  • Score: 150 or more in the 2026 UTME.
  • Who could apply: candidates who chose SUMAS first but missed their course, and candidates willing to change their first choice to SUMAS.
  • Related courses also listed: Biochemistry, Applied Microbiology, Industrial Chemistry, Pharmacology and Human Physiology.
  • Not listed: Medicine, Nursing, Pharmacy, Medical Laboratory Science, Human Anatomy and the other main health courses.
  • New applicants: register on samp.sumas.edu.ng if you never did SUMAS Post-UTME. If you already applied, do not apply again.

Supplementary deadline

No closing date was reported for the SUMAS supplementary round, and JAMB’s deadline for public universities to finish 2026 admissions is 31 October 2026. If you want Genetics and Biotechnology this session, act on JAMB and contact SUMAS admissions (08067390088) now.

UTME subject combination and O’level requirements

JAMB’s general entry for Genetics and Biotechnology, as reproduced by Myschool, asks for Use of English, Biology, Chemistry and any other science subject. In practice that fourth paper is usually Physics or Mathematics. SUMAS is not named in the brochure’s remarks (only UNICAL is), so the general rule should apply to you. Confirm on the JAMB e-brochure before you register.

RequirementGenetics and Biotechnology at SUMAS
UTME subjectsUse of English, Biology, Chemistry and one other science (Physics or Mathematics is the safe pick)
O’level (JAMB brochure)Five credits in English Language, Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry and Physics
O’level (SUMAS rule)Five credits including English Language, Mathematics and Physics, plus two relevant subjects
SittingsNot more than two
UTME score150 or more in the 2026 UTME
AgeAt least 16 by 30 September 2026
ChoiceSUMAS first on JAMB CAPS
Direct Entry (SUMAS rule)At least second class lower or its equivalent in OND, HND or a first degree, cleared on JAMB e-Facility
Direct Entry (JAMB brochure)Two A level passes in Biology, Botany or Zoology, and Chemistry or Physics

Why I recommend Physics or Mathematics as your fourth UTME subject: they are the subjects every Nigerian university accepts for this course, and they match your O’level. “Any other science” can be read as Agricultural Science by some candidates, which is a risk you do not need.

Whatever you write in JAMB, SUMAS still wants a credit in Physics at O’level. Biology-heavy students who dropped Physics early are the ones most often caught here.

Our JAMB Biology syllabus and JAMB Chemistry syllabus posts list what to read for two of your papers.

How SUMAS screens Genetics and Biotechnology applicants

SUMAS called its 2026/2027 Post-UTME a screening exercise and set no published written test. It has not explained how it ranks candidates. A later notice asked some admitted candidates who skipped Post-UTME to register on SAMP, pay the screening fee and be verified at the ICT Unit, which suggests screening on records. SUMAS has not confirmed this.

These can rule you out before any ranking: a score below 150, SUMAS not being your first choice, O’level results missing from CAPS, a third sitting, or details that do not match between JAMB and the SUMAS portal.

Worked example (illustration only)

Many Nigerian universities use a 50/50 aggregate: UTME score ÷ 8 for up to 50 points, plus five relevant O’level grades scored A1 = 10, B2 = 9, B3 = 8, C4 = 7, C5 = 6 and C6 = 5 for up to 50 points. SUMAS has not published its formula. This only shows how such a method works.

Obinna scored 192 in the UTME (English, Biology, Chemistry, Physics). Over two sittings, his best grades are C4 in English Language, B3 in Mathematics, B2 in Biology, C4 in Chemistry and C6 in Physics.

PartWorkingPoints
UTME192 ÷ 824
O’level7 + 8 + 9 + 7 + 536
Aggregate24 + 3660 out of 100

His C6 in Physics is still a credit, so he qualifies. If he had a B3 there instead, he would gain 3 points, the same as 24 extra UTME marks.

Admission odds and the score to aim for

Genetics and Biotechnology is less crowded than the health courses at SUMAS. It was reopened on the October 2026 supplementary list, which tells you places remained after the main screening. SUMAS has not published a quota for the course, and it has not published catchment or ELDS states. The 45% merit, 35% catchment and 20% ELDS split often quoted online is a federal university rule; SUMAS is state-owned and has not said it uses it.

My advice, not an official figure: a UTME score of 180 or more, with five credits at no more than two sittings including Physics, gives you a comfortable chance. Candidates between 150 and 180 can still be considered, especially in the supplementary round.

Accreditation and what you study

Genetics and Biotechnology is one of the 15 SUMAS programmes the NUC fully accredited after its exercise from 28 October to 3 December 2025. Biochemistry and Applied Microbiology and Brewing, the two nearest courses, are on the same list.

The course studies how traits are inherited and how living cells and their DNA can be used to make products and solve problems in health, farming and industry. SUMAS has not published its course outline, so this list reflects typical Nigerian Genetics and Biotechnology programmes:

  • Classical (Mendelian) genetics and population genetics
  • Cell biology, cytogenetics and molecular genetics
  • Microbial and plant biotechnology, tissue culture
  • Recombinant DNA technology and genetic engineering
  • Human and medical genetics, immunogenetics
  • Bioinformatics, biostatistics and biosafety
  • Laboratory practicals, SIWES and a final year project

You study in the Faculty of Natural and Applied Sciences on the Igbo-Eno campus in Udenu Local Government Area, Enugu State. Plan for four years as a UTME entrant, the usual length for this B.Sc. in Nigeria; SUMAS has not published its own duration. The latest published fee schedule (2022/2023) charged Applied and Natural Sciences students ₦251,400. Add the ₦50,000 acceptance fee, and confirm current fees on your portal invoice.

Careers after Genetics and Biotechnology

Mistakes Genetics and Biotechnology applicants make

  • Choosing Agricultural Science as the fourth UTME subject: use Physics or Mathematics to stay safe.
  • No Physics credit at O’level: SUMAS asks every applicant for it.
  • Changing course on JAMB without calling SUMAS: confirm the supplementary round is still open before you pay.
  • Two SUMAS applications: only one is allowed.
  • Paying agents: SUMAS takes money only through its own portals.
