CCU Criminology and Security Studies Cut-Off Mark 2027/2028 and Admission Requirements

Coal City University uses JAMB’s 150 minimum for Criminology and Security Studies. See the JAMB subjects to register, the O’level rule, screening, a safe target score and what is known about NUC accreditation.

The CCU Criminology and Security Studies cut-off mark is 150 in the UTME, the minimum JAMB set for all Nigerian universities at its 2026 policy meeting. Coal City University, Enugu has not published a departmental cut-off for Criminology, and it did not declare a cut-off of its own at that meeting. So 150 makes you eligible, and a higher “official” CCU Criminology figure on a blog or forum did not come from the university.

2027/2028 update: CCU cut-off marks usually stay the same from one year to the next, so the figures on this page are what 2027/2028 candidates should plan with. They come from the latest official notice (2026/2027). If the 2027/2028 notice changes anything, we will update this page.

The course is on JAMB’s list for Coal City University as Criminology And Security Studies, and CCU names it among the degrees in its Faculty of Arts, Social and Management Sciences. Two things need your attention before you apply. The JAMB brochure entry for this course reads like a copy of the Economics entry, so the subject rules are less clear than for most courses. And I found no NUC accreditation result for CCU Criminology, so I treat its accreditation as not confirmed. Both are covered below, with the subjects I would register, screening, a safe score and the CAPS steps.

AbsTechConnect (25 May 2026) gives CCU a cut-off of 150 without citing a CCU notice. It is the same number as JAMB’s floor, so treat it as that and not as a separate CCU rule.

Safe target score for Criminology at CCU (my advice)

CCU does not publish its last admitted score. This table is my own judgement, based on how private universities in Enugu usually admit and on Criminology being a popular course with candidates who hoped for Law.

Your UTME scoreMy read for CCU Criminology
Below 150Not eligible for any university this session
150 to 164Eligible; a place is possible with complete O’level and an early application
165 to 189Good position for a private university
190 and aboveStrong

For 2027 I would aim for at least 170, and I would register Economics, Mathematics and Government with Use of English, which satisfies every reading of the brochure that I describe in the next section.

UTME subject combination and O’level for Criminology at CCU

The JAMB brochure entry for Criminology and Security Studies (Myschool reprint, checked 30 October 2026) gives the rules below. The O’level section carries a remark for “CCU”, which matches Coal City University’s place on the course.

RequirementCriminology and Security Studies at CCU
JAMB course name to registerCriminology And Security Studies (Coal City University)
UTME subjectsUse of English, Economics, Mathematics and one of Government, History, Geography, Literature in English, French or CRS/IRS
O’level (CCU remark)Five credits including English Language, Mathematics, Economics and two Arts or Social Science subjects
Exams acceptedWAEC, NECO or NABTEB (CCU has not published its own list)
Direct Entry (general rule)Two A-level passes in Economics and one of Mathematics, Statistics, Geography, Physics, Chemistry, Agricultural Science, Accounting, Business Management, History or Government

Why the brochure entry needs care

Most universities treat Criminology as an Arts and Social Science course, with Government or History at its centre. The reprinted brochure text instead makes Economics and Mathematics compulsory, and its Direct Entry remarks mention money and banking diplomas, which belong to Economics. One remark, for Adekunle Ajasin University, even says Criminology needs three Arts or Social Science subjects. Earlier compilations also listed a Government-based combination for this course.

My way round the uncertainty is to pick subjects that satisfy both versions: Use of English, Economics, Mathematics and Government. That combination meets the brochure text as printed and the usual Government-based rule. Confirm on JAMB’s e-brochure when you register, because JAMB corrects these entries from time to time.

The O’level gap that catches people

Because the CCU remark names Economics as well as English and Mathematics, a candidate with Government, Literature and CRS but no Economics credit can fall short even with a good UTME score. Check your result slip against the three named subjects before you pay for anything.

How CCU screening works for Criminology

DetailWhat is known
Admission advertCCU invited applications into its undergraduate programmes for 2026/2027 (Myschool reprint of the notice, 18 May 2026). Criminology/Security Studies is among the programmes the Faculty of Arts, Social and Management Sciences names on CCU’s website.

Worked example for a Criminology candidate

With no published aggregate formula or screening test, all you can calculate is your margin over the minimum and over my safe target.

Take Somtochukwu, who scored 174 with English B3, Mathematics C5, Economics C4, Government B2 and CRS B3 in one NECO sitting.

  1. Eligibility: 174 minus 150 = 24 marks above the minimum.
  2. Against my safe target: 174 minus 170 = 4 marks above the range I call comfortable.
  3. O’level check: English, Mathematics and Economics are credits, and Government and CRS are the two Arts or Social Science subjects. He meets the CCU remark.
  4. My advice: apply as soon as the portal opens, upload the NECO result to CAPS, and ask the department about the programme’s NUC status before paying school fees.

Now Nkem, who scored 186 with credits in English, Mathematics, Government, Literature and History but only a pass in Economics. Her score is fine, but she misses the Economics credit in the CCU remark. Her options are a November resit in Economics or a CCU course that does not ask for Economics, such as Sociology.

Admission odds and practical advice

  • Above 150 the score is rarely the problem: complete O’level credits, an early application and a clean CAPS record decide most CCU offers.
  • Check accreditation before fees: I could not confirm NUC accreditation for this programme, so ask CCU in writing which stage it is at.
  • Make CCU your first choice: if not, do a JAMB change of institution before CCU starts proposing candidates.
  • Keep a Plan B: Sociology, Psychology and Public Administration at CCU are NUC accredited and share much of the same subject base.
  • Mind the 2026/2027 deadline: JAMB set 30 November 2026 as the deadline for private universities to conclude 2026/2027 admissions.

How to apply for Criminology at CCU, step by step

  1. Get your JAMB profile code: send NIN, a space and your 11-digit NIN to 55019 or 66019 from the phone line linked to your NIN.
  2. Register the UTME correctly: pick Coal City University and the course “Criminology And Security Studies”, with Use of English plus Economics, Mathematics and Government (or another subject from the brochure list).
  3. Upload your O’level to CAPS: do it at a JAMB-accredited centre once your result is out. CCU cannot recommend you without it, and awaiting-result candidates stay stuck until the upload is done.
  4. Apply on the CCU portal: open portal.ccu.edu.ng, fill the undergraduate form, pay the fee the portal shows and print your slip.
  5. Watch for screening: CCU has not published a screening date or format for this course, so check the portal and ccu.edu.ng after you apply.
  6. Accept on CAPS: log in to efacility.jamb.gov.ng, choose Check Admission Status, then Access my CAPS, and accept the offer. JAMB gives four weeks to accept. Our JAMB CAPS guide explains each status.
  7. Pay acceptance and clear: CCU has not published its acceptance or tuition fees in any source I could open, so pay only what your portal invoice shows, through the channel on the portal.

Warning

Posts on forums and classified sites sell “CCU admission forms” and list private phone numbers. Apply only through portal.ccu.edu.ng, never pay an individual for a “slot”, and check that any offer shows on your JAMB CAPS page before you pay acceptance.

Studying Criminology and Security Studies at CCU

Criminology is part of CCU’s Faculty of Arts, Social and Management Sciences, one of the university’s foundation faculties from 2016. The dean is Professor Joseph I. Aneke. CCU’s faculty page lists Criminology/Security Studies among fifteen programmes, but it does not include it in the shorter “Courses” section, which names eight degrees, and the page gives no start year for the programme.

Accreditation

The NUC’s “Accreditation Results 1990 to 2025” publication (September 2026) lists CCU’s accredited programmes by discipline. Under Social Sciences it names Economics, International Relations, Mass Communication, Political Science, Psychology and Sociology. Criminology and Security Studies is not on CCU’s list, and I found no NUC accreditation report page for it either.

That usually means a programme is too new to have had its first accreditation visit, which the NUC carries out once the first set of students is well into the course. It does not mean the programme is illegal. But I cannot tell you its status, so ask the university for its NUC approval letter or accreditation result before you pay fees. A programme that later fails accreditation can leave students stranded.

What you study

CCU has not published a course outline. The standard four-year B.Sc. pattern in Nigerian universities looks like this:

  • 100 level: introduction to criminology, sociology, psychology, political science and general studies.
  • 200 and 300 levels: theories of crime, criminal law and the justice system, policing, penology and corrections, victimology, security management, research methods and statistics.
  • 400 level: cybercrime, terrorism and insurgency, peace and conflict studies, electives and a final-year project.

Careers

Graduates work in the police, Civil Defence, correctional service, immigration and other security agencies, private security and risk firms, bank fraud and compliance units, and NGOs working on justice and rehabilitation. Many of the uniformed services recruit through their own exams, so the degree helps but does not guarantee a job. If you really want to be a lawyer, note that CCU said in March 2026 that it has no Faculty of Law and has never admitted Law students.

Another Criminology option in Enugu

Peaceland University in Enugu also lists Criminology and Security Studies, with JAMB’s 150 as the minimum and accreditation also not confirmed. See our Peaceland Criminology cut-off guide.

Mistakes that cost Criminology applicants a CCU place

  • Leaving out Economics: the brochure text as printed makes Economics compulsory in the UTME and the CCU remark names it at O’level.
  • Registering “Criminology” alone: use the exact JAMB name, Criminology And Security Studies, under Coal City University. A JAMB change of course fixes a wrong entry.
  • O’level not on CAPS: CCU cannot recommend you without it.
  • Assuming Criminology leads to Law: it is a social science degree; Law needs its own admission.
  • Paying agents: apply on the CCU portal only.

CCU Criminology cut-off mark: frequently asked questions

Is 160 enough for Criminology and Security Studies at Coal City University? Yes. 160 clears the 150 minimum, and CCU has published no higher departmental figure. What matters next is your O’level, especially credits in English, Mathematics and Economics.

Can I write Government instead of Economics for CCU Criminology in JAMB? Not according to the brochure text as printed, which makes Economics and Mathematics compulsory and lets Government fill the fourth slot. Registering Economics, Mathematics and Government covers you either way.

Is Criminology at CCU accredited by NUC? I could not confirm it. The programme is not listed under CCU in the NUC’s 1990 to 2025 results publication and no NUC report page for it turned up, so ask CCU for its approval or accreditation status before paying.

Does Coal City University offer Law? No. CCU stated in March 2026 that it has not set up a Faculty of Law or admitted anyone into an LL.B. programme, and it is not on the Council of Legal Education’s August 2026 approved list.

Sources and updates

The 150 national minimum, the 30 November 2026 admission deadline JAMB set for private universities in the 2026/2027 cycle and the four-week CAPS acceptance window come from JAMB’s 2026 policy meeting as reported by the News Agency of Nigeria on 11 May 2026; the 2025 figure is from Nairametrics (8 July 2025). CCU’s absence from the list of universities that declared their own 2026 cut-offs is based on News Central’s list (11 May 2026). The course name comes from Myschool’s reprint of JAMB’s CCU course list, and the subject rules and the “CCU” O’level remark from the JAMB brochure entry for Criminology and Security Studies, both checked on 30 October 2026. CCU’s programme list and dean are from its Faculty of Arts, Social and Management Sciences page and About CCU page. The accreditation position is from the NUC Accreditation Results 1990 to 2025 publication, where CCU’s list has no Criminology entry, plus a search of NUC accreditation report pages. The Law position is from CCU’s statement of 16 March 2026 and the Council of Legal Education list dated 14 August 2026. The Peaceland figure comes from our Peaceland guide. The 2026/2027 admission advert is from Myschool’s reprint (18 May 2026); the form fee and applicant groups are from AbsTechConnect (May 2026), which is unofficial. Checked on 30 October 2026. I will update this page if CCU publishes a departmental cut-off, screening details or a new accreditation result.
