The Renaissance University Software Engineering cut off mark is 150 in the UTME. Renaissance University (RNU), Ugbawka, publishes that one minimum for all its programmes for 2026/2027, the same as JAMB’s national minimum for universities. RNU has not published a separate cut-off for Software Engineering.
2027/2028 update: RNU cut-off marks usually stay the same from one year to the next, so the figures on this page are what 2027/2028 candidates should plan with. They come from the latest official notice (2026/2027). If the 2027/2028 notice changes anything, we will update this page.
Check JAMB’s list first: RNU offers Software Engineering, but as of 30 October 2026 it is not on JAMB’s course list for RNU (Myschool’s reprint of that list, 22 entries). A CAPS offer can only be made for a course on JAMB’s list, so check the JAMB portal when you register. If Software Engineering isn’t there under Renaissance University, register Computer Science with RNU, which uses the same UTME subjects, or look at the alternatives in our RNU Cyber Security Science guide, such as Clifford University and ESUT.
Software Engineering is one of three computing degrees RNU lists, beside Computer Science and Cyber Security Science, all in the Faculty of Natural and Applied Sciences. RNU’s O’level table doesn’t have a line for it yet, so this page also shows the O’level set I would have ready to be safe, along with the official figures, a safe target score (my advice), screening, fees and the CAPS steps.

RNU Software Engineering cut-off history
| Session | Figure | What it is | Status |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2026/2027 | 150 | RNU minimum JAMB score for every programme, including Software Engineering | Official (RNU undergraduate page, FAQ and admission announcement) |
| 2026/2027 | 150 | JAMB national minimum for universities | Official (JAMB policy meeting, 11 May 2026) |
| 2026/2027 | Not published | Separate departmental cut-off for Software Engineering | RNU says some programmes may need more than 150 but lists no figure |
| 2025/2026 | Not confirmed | RNU figure for that session | Blogs print numbers, but I found no RNU notice to back them |
RNU’s 2026/2027 announcement also says candidates who scored 150 or more in the 2023 and 2024 JAMB examinations can apply. That wording looks carried over from an earlier session, so if you are relying on an older UTME result, ask Admissions before you pay anything. Some blogs print a 2025/2026 RNU cut-off without citing any RNU notice, and I would not plan around those numbers. Software Engineering appears on RNU’s current undergraduate page, FAQ, Direct Entry page and 2026/2027 announcement, so the 150 minimum applies to it.
Safe target score for Software Engineering at RNU (my advice)
This is my judgement as an admissions adviser. RNU has not published these numbers.
| Your UTME score | My read for Software Engineering at RNU |
|---|---|
| Below 150 | Not eligible for RNU this session |
| 150 to 169 | Eligible. Likely if your O’level covers the safe set below |
| 170 to 199 | Comfortable |
| 200 and above | Strong, and it keeps public universities open as a backup |
Like Computer Science, Software Engineering has no professional-council quota of the Law or Nursing kind, so the 150 minimum and your O’level usually decide things at a private university. RNU’s FAQ still says some programmes may need more than 150, so I would aim for 180 or more.
UTME subject combination and O’level for RNU Software Engineering
| Requirement | Software Engineering at RNU |
|---|---|
| UTME subjects | Use of English, Mathematics, Physics and one of Biology, Chemistry, Agricultural Science, Economics or Geography (JAMB brochure general requirement for Software Engineering) |
| O’level (RNU) | Not listed for this course. RNU’s general rule: five WAEC or NECO credits including English and Mathematics, in not more than two sittings |
| O’level (JAMB general) | Five credits including English Language, Mathematics, Physics and two other science subjects |
| Safe set I would have | English, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Biology |
| Awaiting results | No RNU rule published; ask Admissions |
| Post-UTME | None published |
Until RNU adds Software Engineering to its O’level table, I would prepare as if the Computer Science line applies, because the two degrees sit side by side in the same faculty. That means credits in English, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Biology. The same five credits also satisfy JAMB’s general requirement of Physics plus two other sciences, so they cover both readings.
Mathematics and Physics are compulsory in the UTME on JAMB’s general line. Economics or Geography can be your fourth subject, but if you choose one of them, make sure your O’level still has the science credits.
Direct Entry into Software Engineering at RNU
RNU’s Direct Entry page lists these routes. It does not publish separate Direct Entry rules for each course, so read them alongside the subject requirements above.
| Qualification | RNU’s stated minimum |
|---|---|
| A’level (Cambridge, JUPEB or IJMB) | At least two passes in relevant subjects |
| ND or HND | At least Lower Credit from a recognised institution |
| NCE | At least merit in a related field |
| Also required | O’level result, passport photographs and a JAMB Direct Entry registration for the current year |
JAMB’s general Direct Entry rule for Software Engineering asks for two A’level science passes including Mathematics, or an NCE merit in Mathematics and one other subject. RNU’s own Direct Entry page lists Software Engineering and accepts the A’level, ND or HND and NCE routes above. If you hold an ND or HND in Computer Science, ask Admissions which level you would enter.
Does RNU write Post-UTME for Software Engineering?
RNU’s official pages describe a free online application followed by a document check. None of them mention a Post-UTME test, a screening fee or an aggregate formula. RNU still needs you on JAMB CAPS with an eligible score, the right subjects and your O’level uploaded, because every admission in Nigeria goes through CAPS.
RNU’s Direct Entry page adds that applicants may be asked to attend an interview or bring extra documents. Since RNU hasn’t listed O’level subjects for this course, the clearance desk is where any gap would show up, so ask Admissions about your exact subjects before you pay acceptance.
Worked example (illustrative)
RNU has not published an aggregate formula, so this example checks eligibility and the money you need before resumption, using RNU’s own figures. Take Zainab, who scored 174 with English, Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry, and has credits in English, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Biology from one sitting.
- Score check: 174 minus 150 = 24. She clears RNU’s minimum by 24 marks.
- UTME check: her combination matches JAMB’s general line for Software Engineering.
- O’level check: her five credits meet RNU’s general rule, JAMB’s general line and the Computer Science table, so no reading of the rules leaves her short.
- Money before resumption on three instalments: 50% of ₦1,600,000 = ₦800,000, plus ₦50,000 acceptance = ₦850,000.
- Money before resumption on four instalments: 40% of ₦1,600,000 = ₦640,000, plus ₦50,000 acceptance = ₦690,000.
Uche scored 181 with English, Mathematics, Physics and Economics, and his credits are English, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Economics. He meets RNU’s general rule, but he has only one science besides Physics, while JAMB’s general line wants two. He should ask Admissions before paying, and sit Biology in a GCE if RNU says he needs it.
RNU Software Engineering acceptance fee and school fees
| Item | Software Engineering at RNU | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Application fee | None | RNU FAQ |
| Acceptance fee | ₦50,000 | RNU FAQ |
| Session fee | ₦1,600,000 | RNU tuition schedule and 2026/2027 admission announcement |
| What the session fee covers | Tuition, accommodation and three meals a day | RNU announcement and FAQ |
| Instalments | Three (50%, 20%, 30%) or four (40%, 20%, 20%, 20%); first instalment before resumption | RNU FAQ |
| Hostel | Compulsory; no more than three students to a room; no cooking | RNU FAQ |
Software Engineering shares the ₦1,600,000 band with Computer Science, Cyber Security Science, Medical Laboratory Science and Accounting. RNU’s tuition schedule also lists Software Engineering at ₦1,600,000, grouped under Computing. RNU’s FAQ puts the overall range at about ₦1.5 million to ₦1.8 million per session.
Your chances of getting Software Engineering at RNU
RNU is a private, fee-paying university, and it does not publish how many people apply or how many it admits per course. From how private universities in the South East usually fill their places, a candidate who meets the 150 minimum, has the right O’level credits and can pay the fees normally stands a fair chance. That is my reading of the market, not an RNU statistic.
Software Engineering and Computer Science use the same UTME combination on JAMB’s general line and the same fee at RNU. If one fills, a change of course on CAPS to the other may be possible, so tell Admissions which one you would accept as a second option.
How to apply for Software Engineering at RNU, step by step
- Get your JAMB profile code: send NIN, a space and your 11-digit NIN to 55019 or 66019 from the phone line linked to your NIN.
- Register the UTME with the right subjects: Use of English, Mathematics, Physics and one of Biology, Chemistry, Agricultural Science, Economics or Geography. Pick Renaissance University as your first choice. RNU says candidates who chose another school must do a JAMB change of institution before it can admit them.
- Upload your O’level to CAPS: RNU lists this as a step in its own application process. If you can’t do it at a CBT centre near you, RNU says its on-campus JAMB CBT centre handles O’level upload, change of institution and CAPS acceptance for a small charge.
- Fill the RNU online form: go to rnu.edu.ng/admissions/regular_admission and choose Software Engineering. RNU charges no application fee, and its announcement says the form takes about three minutes. You can also apply in person at the Admissions Office in Ugbawka.
- Answer any follow-up from Admissions: RNU publishes no Post-UTME test. Its Direct Entry page says applicants may be asked to attend an interview or bring more documents, so keep your phone on and your papers ready.
- Accept the offer on CAPS: log in at efacility.jamb.gov.ng, open Check Admission Status, then Access my CAPS. Accept only when the offer shows RNU and Software Engineering. Our JAMB CAPS guide explains each status.
- Pay acceptance and the first instalment: ₦50,000 acceptance, then at least the first instalment of the ₦1,600,000 session fee before resumption. Pay only into the university account shown on rnu.edu.ng and confirm the payment with the Bursar.
- Clear with your documents: O’level result, four passport photographs, JAMB result, birth certificate, local government identification letter or certificate of origin, NIN slip, acceptance and school fee receipts, and A’level result for Direct Entry.
Warning
RNU charges no application fee. Anyone who asks you to pay for an RNU form or promises a guaranteed slot for money is not acting for the university. A genuine offer appears on your JAMB CAPS page, and fees go only into the university account shown on rnu.edu.ng, confirmed with the Bursar.
Studying Software Engineering at Renaissance University
Software Engineering is a B.Sc. in RNU’s Faculty of Natural and Applied Sciences. RNU is in Ugbawka, Nkanu East Local Government Area of Enugu State, about five minutes from ESUT’s Agbani campus, and the NUC licensed it as a private university in 2005. Computing degrees in Nigeria normally take four years; RNU’s pages don’t state the duration for this one.
Computer Science covers computing broadly, including theory. Software Engineering spends more of its time on how large programs are specified, designed, tested and maintained by teams. If you enjoy building apps and want to work as a developer, either degree can get you there; Software Engineering puts more of the practical method into the timetable.
RNU’s pages say its courses are accredited by the NUC but give no status for each course. Ask Admissions whether the NUC has approved Software Engineering at RNU and what its current accreditation status is.
What you study

Mistakes that cost Software Engineering applicants an RNU place
- Leaving out Physics in the UTME: it is on JAMB’s general line for Software Engineering.
- Thin science credits: RNU hasn’t listed O’level subjects, so have Physics, Chemistry and Biology to be safe.
- RNU not your first choice: fix it with a JAMB change of institution.
- Paying an agent for a form: RNU’s form is free.
- Accepting on CAPS and stopping there: acceptance fee and clearance at Ugbawka come next.
If you are sitting the UTME again, read when JAMB 2027 registration starts and how to check your JAMB result.

Sources and updates
The 150 minimum, the O’level table, the first-choice rule, the CAPS step, the document list and the note on RNU’s JAMB CBT centre come from RNU’s undergraduate admissions page (checked 29 October 2026). The acceptance fees, the no-application-fee rule, the instalment plans, the hostel rules and the remark that some programmes may need more than 150 come from RNU’s admissions FAQ. Session fees by programme, the admission routes and the application link come from RNU’s 2026/2027 admission announcement. The ₦1,600,000 figure is confirmed on RNU’s tuition schedule. Direct Entry routes come from RNU’s Direct Entry page. The JAMB course check uses Myschool’s reprint of JAMB’s course list for RNU (22 entries, no Software Engineering; checked 30 October 2026). The national minimum of 150 for universities was set at JAMB’s 2026 policy meeting on 11 May 2026, as reported by the News Agency of Nigeria; News Central TV’s list of institution cut-offs from that meeting does not include RNU. The UTME, O’level and Direct Entry lines for Software Engineering are JAMB’s general requirements as reprinted by Myschool; RNU has no remark on that page. Safe target scores, the odds discussion and the worked example are my advice as an admissions adviser, not RNU figures. This page will be updated when RNU publishes its 2027/2028 admission notice or a departmental cut-off.
