CCU Political Science Cut-Off Mark 2027/2028 & Admission Requirements

CCU Political Science needs at least 150 in the UTME, with no separate cut-off published. See the JAMB subjects, O’level, Direct Entry, accreditation status and how to apply.

The CCU Political Science cut-off mark is 150 in the UTME, the minimum JAMB set for every Nigerian university for 2026/2027. Coal City University, Enugu has not published its own cut-off for Political Science, or for the university as a whole, in any notice I found. Score 150 or more with Government or History in your UTME, and you are eligible to apply.

2027/2028 update: CCU cut-off marks usually stay the same from one year to the next, so the figures on this page are what 2027/2028 candidates should plan with. They come from the latest official notice (2026/2027). If the 2027/2028 notice changes anything, we will update this page.

Political Science is a B.Sc. in CCU’s Faculty of Arts, Social and Management Sciences. It is on JAMB’s course list for Coal City University as Political Science, and on the faculty’s own programme list on ccu.edu.ng. NUC’s results file lists it as fully accredited, with a maturity date of 2029. Below are the figures, my safe target score, the subjects, the Direct Entry rule, the CAPS steps and what the degree leads to. If you were hoping to read Law at CCU, read the FAQ first: the university does not run Law.

For both sessions since JAMB fixed the university minimum at 150, the only figure that applies to CCU Political Science is that national minimum. Some blogs still quote 140 for Coal City University, taken from an older cycle. Ignore it: no university can admit a 2026 or 2027 candidate below 150. A 2026 blog also gives CCU a cut-off of 150 without citing any CCU notice; that is simply the national figure.

Safe target score for Political Science at CCU (my advice)

These bands are my judgement as an admissions adviser, not CCU figures.

Your UTME scoreMy read for Political Science at CCU
Below 150Not eligible for any CCU degree in that session
150 to 164Eligible. Apply early and make sure Government, English and Mathematics are in order
165 to 179A good position for Political Science at a private university
180 and aboveStrong. It matches ESUT’s 180 band for Political Science and clears UNN’s 160 screening mark

Political Science is popular with students who want public service, politics or a later route into Law. CCU admits within an NUC quota and does not publish a merit list, so I would aim for 165 or more in the 2027 UTME, with a credit in Government (B3 or better helps) and in Mathematics.

UTME subject combination and O’level for Political Science

RequirementPolitical Science at CCU
UTME subjectsUse of English, Government or History, and two other Social Science or Arts subjects
O’level (JAMB rule)Five credits in Government or History, English Language and three other subjects, with at least a pass in Mathematics
Mathematics at CCUCCU’s 2022/2023 rules accepted a D7 pass for Political Science; a credit is safer
Direct Entry (JAMB rule)Two A level passes including Government or History
CCU remark in the JAMB brochureNone

Mathematics is the one place where Political Science is easier than other CCU courses. JAMB’s line asks only for a pass, and CCU’s 2022/2023 screening guide, as reported by SchoolNGR, said a D7 in Mathematics was accepted for Political Science while every other course needed a credit. CCU has not restated that rule for 2026/2027 and I could not open its current requirements page, so a credit is still the safer plan. For the UTME, take Government rather than History, then Economics and one of Literature in English, CRS or Geography. Government is what most backup universities prefer, and Economics keeps Public Administration and International Relations open. Revise from our JAMB Government syllabus.

Political Science or Education and Political Science?

JAMB lists both Political Science and Education and Political Science for CCU. The second is a teacher-training degree in the Faculty of Education, for people who want to teach Government in secondary schools. If you want the social science degree, register Political Science.

Direct Entry

JAMB’s Direct Entry rule asks for two A level passes, one in Government or History. CCU has not published its own Direct Entry page that I could open, so it has not said whether it takes ND, HND, NCE, JUPEB or IJMB results for this course. CCU advertised JUPEB and IJMB for 2026/2027; confirm the entry level with the admissions office before you rely on either.

How CCU screens Political Science candidates

Coal City University invited applications for its 2026/2027 undergraduate programmes in a notice reprinted by Myschool on 18 May 2026, but the reprint is cut short and no screening date, test format or aggregate formula appears in it. I found no written post-UTME test announced for Political Science in any CCU notice. Expect the university to check your UTME score, your O’level and your documents through its application portal, then recommend you on JAMB CAPS if you qualify.

Three admission sites put the CCU form fee at ₦2,000: SchoolNGR for 2022/2023, Legit in June 2025 and ABS TechConnect in May 2026. The figure has been steady, but I could not confirm it on a CCU page, so check the amount on the portal invoice before you pay.

What to have ready

  • Your JAMB result slip and registration number
  • Your WAEC, NECO or NABTEB result (and the scratch card or token if the portal asks for it)
  • A recent passport photograph in digital form
  • Your NIN slip, birth certificate and local government identification letter for clearance
  • A working email address you check daily, because CCU sends admission letters to the email on your application

Worked example (illustration only)

CCU publishes no aggregate formula, so the useful numbers are how far you are above the 150 minimum and my safe target of 165. This is not CCU’s method.

  1. Somto, 168: 168 minus 150 = 18 above the minimum and 3 above my target. UTME in English, Government, Economics and Literature; credits in Government, English, Mathematics, Economics and Literature. A good position.
  2. Ebuka, 151: 151 minus 150 = 1 above the minimum. He is eligible, but with no margin at all. He should apply in the first batch, upload his O’level to CAPS immediately and follow up with the admissions office.
  3. Nneka, 185 with no Government or History: her UTME subjects were English, Economics, Literature and CRS. JAMB asks for Government or History, so Political Science does not fit; Mass Communication or English and Literary Studies would suit her combination better.

Your admission odds and what helps

Political Science is one of the original degrees on CCU’s About page, and NUC’s results file shows it fully accredited until 2029. With 150 or more you are eligible, and your odds then depend on the points below.

  • Apply early: private universities fill their NUC quota in batches, and the later batches have fewer places.
  • Clean O’level: five credits with English Language and Mathematics among them. CCU’s 2022/2023 rules, as reported by SchoolNGR, allowed no more than two sittings; CCU has not restated this for 2026/2027, so one sitting is safest. A missing credit stops you whatever your UTME score.
  • Upload to CAPS: CCU cannot recommend you if JAMB does not have your O’level.
  • Government or History: without one of them in the UTME, JAMB will not let CCU admit you into Political Science.
  • Respond fast: accept on CAPS and pay acceptance within the time CCU gives, or the place can go to the next candidate.

How to apply for Political Science at CCU, step by step

  1. Get your JAMB profile code: send NIN, a space and your 11-digit NIN to 55019 or 66019 from the phone line linked to your NIN. JAMB replies with the profile code you take to the CBT centre.
  2. Register the UTME correctly: choose Coal City University, Enugu and the course Political Science, and sit Use of English, Government or History, and two other Social Science or Arts subjects. Make CCU your first choice. If you chose another school, you may need a JAMB change of institution before CCU can offer you a place.
  3. Upload your O’level to CAPS: go to a JAMB-accredited CBT centre and upload every sitting you want counted. If you are awaiting WAEC or NECO, upload as soon as the result is out.
  4. Apply on the CCU portal: use the Apply Now link on ccu.edu.ng, which leads to portal.ccu.edu.ng. In past cycles the route was Apply for a Degree Programme, generate an invoice, pay the form fee, then enter your JAMB registration number, choose Political Science and print the completed form. Follow the screens the portal shows you this year, since the layout can change.
  5. Watch your portal and email: CCU’s August 2026 notice says admission letters come through its admission portal and the email address you registered. Check both, and keep your original documents ready for any interview or document check.
  6. Accept on CAPS: log in at efacility.jamb.gov.ng, open Check Admission Status, then Access my CAPS, and accept only when the offer shows Political Science at Coal City University. Our JAMB CAPS guide explains each status.
  7. Pay acceptance and fees, then clear: pay only through the CCU portal or the bursary, never to a private account, then bring your originals for clearance and registration.

Warning

Coal City University warned in August 2026 that it does not use private individuals to arrange admission. Ignore anyone who calls, chats on WhatsApp or messages you on social media offering a CCU place or asking for payment. Genuine offers come through the university portal and your registered email, and every real admission shows on JAMB CAPS. JAMB treats admissions done outside CAPS as illegal.

JAMB set 30 November 2026 as the 2026/2027 admission deadline for private universities (News Agency of Nigeria, 11 May 2026), so CCU’s offers for that session have to be on CAPS by that date. If you are planning for 2027, read when JAMB 2027 registration starts and how to check your JAMB result and what to do with the score.

Studying Political Science at Coal City University

Coal City University is a private university in Enugu. Its About page says the Federal Government issued its operating licence on 22 November 2016. The university’s site menu shows three faculties: Natural and Applied Sciences; Arts, Social and Management Sciences; and Education. CCU runs no Law programme; it said so in a statement of 16 March 2026 and again in June 2026.

What you study

CCU has not published a course outline I could open, so this is how the B.Sc. usually runs under NUC’s benchmark. You start with introduction to political science, Nigerian government and politics, social science methods and general studies. Later years cover political theory and thought, comparative politics, public administration, international relations, Nigerian foreign policy, political economy, local government, research methods and statistics, ending with a final-year project.

Duration and accreditation

  • Duration: four years for UTME entrants is the usual length; CCU has not stated it on a page I could read.
  • NUC accreditation: full. NUC’s Accreditation Results 1990 to 2025 file lists CCU Political Science with a first result in 2016 and a current Full status with a maturity date of 2029. I did not find the separate NUC report page for the latest visit, so the score is not known. Note that Education and Political Science is a different programme: the same file shows it on Interim status with a 2025 maturity date, so anyone choosing that course should ask about its status.

Where it leads

  • Public service, local government and electoral bodies
  • Policy research, think tanks and NGOs
  • Journalism and public affairs
  • Campaigns, party work and legislative aide roles
  • Postgraduate study, or a later Law degree at another university

For a public university backup in Enugu, compare the ESUT Political Science cut-off mark and the UNN Political Science cut-off mark.

Mistakes Political Science applicants make

  • No Government or History in the UTME: JAMB requires one of them.
  • Registering Education and Political Science by accident: it is a teaching degree.
  • Applying to CCU for Law: CCU has no Law faculty and is not on the Council of Legal Education list.
  • Trusting a 140 cut-off from an old blog: 150 is the 2026/2027 minimum.
  • Paying before CAPS: accept on CAPS first, then pay through the portal.

If you need to switch courses, our JAMB change of course guide shows how.

CCU Political Science cut-off mark: frequently asked questions

Is 160 enough for Political Science in Coal City University? Yes. 160 is above the 150 minimum and CCU has published no higher figure for Political Science. With credits in Government, English and Mathematics it is a workable score, though I would aim for 165 or more.

Can I use History instead of Government for Political Science at CCU? Yes. JAMB accepts Government or History and has no CCU remark. I still suggest Government, because most backup universities prefer it.

Is Political Science at Coal City University accredited? Yes. NUC’s Accreditation Results 1990 to 2025 file lists it as Full, with a maturity date of 2029.

Does Coal City University offer Law? No. CCU said in March 2026 that it has no Faculty of Law and has never admitted LL.B. students, and it is not on the Council of Legal Education’s approved list of August 2026. Political Science graduates who want Law later must apply elsewhere.
