Bowdoin College admission requirements for international students are the same as for US applicants: the Common App, Coalition on Scoir or QuestBridge application with the Bowdoin supplement, a school report and transcript, a counsellor recommendation, a teacher recommendation plus one more letter, a mid-year report and the application fee or a waiver. SAT and ACT scores are optional, English test scores are optional, and there is no minimum grade. If your country has a national exam such as WASSCE, KCSE or IGCSE, Bowdoin expects your official results.
The big draw is money. Bowdoin is need-blind for international applicants and meets the full calculated need of everyone it admits, with no loans, and it says it is one of only eleven US colleges that do both. The catch is selectivity: Bowdoin admitted 962 of 14,727 applicants for the Class of 2030, a record low 6.5%, and it is tied for No. 3 among National Liberal Arts Colleges in the U.S. News 2027 edition. For fall 2027, Early Decision I closes on 15 November 2026 and Early Decision II and Regular Decision on 5 January 2027. I checked these details on Bowdoin’s own pages on 29 October 2026.
Bowdoin ranking and headline numbers
The Bowdoin Orient reported that Bowdoin tied for third in the U.S. News 2027 National Liberal Arts Colleges list with Claremont McKenna, Pomona, Swarthmore and the US Naval Academy. It was fifth in the 2026 edition and ninth in 2024. The last time it reached third was 2018.

Bowdoin acceptance rate and class profile

|---|---|
| Applicants | 14,727 |
| Admitted | 962 |
| Acceptance rate | 6.5% |
| Enrolled | 557 |
| International background | 12% (non-US home or school address, or non-US citizenship) |
| Did not submit test scores | 46% |
| First-generation students | 19% |
Bowdoin publishes these figures on its Class of 2030 profile page. It does not give a separate admit rate for international applicants. The 46% who enrolled without test scores is a useful number for you: going test optional is normal here.
Bowdoin tuition for international students in 2026-27
| Item | 2026-27 amount |
|---|---|
| Tuition | $74,268 |
| Fees | $700 |
| Housing | $10,106 |
| Food (21-meal plan) | $10,326 |
| Direct costs total | $95,400 |
| Books, course materials, supplies and equipment | $840 |
| Personal expenses | $1,660 |
| Transportation | Varies |
| Total cost of attendance | $97,900 plus travel |
Bowdoin enrols every student in its health plan each fall unless they show adequate insurance and waive it. Its personal expense allowance is meant to cover items such as visas, passports and immunisations. Travel between home and Bowdoin is generally part of the family’s share of costs, so ask the Student Aid Office how your flights will be treated.
Bowdoin scholarships for international students
Bowdoin has no merit scholarships. Its aid is need-based, and for international students it works like this:
- Need-blind: your family’s ability to pay plays no part in the admission decision.
- Full need: Bowdoin meets the full calculated need of admitted international students.
- No loans: aid packages contain $0 in loans.
- Typical award: the average aid package for incoming students is $72,883 a year. Bowdoin does not say whether that figure is for international students only.
- Transfers: international transfer students cannot receive Bowdoin aid, although outside scholarships are accepted.
Need-blind plus full need is rare for international students. Among the colleges in this series, Bowdoin and Amherst offer it; Williams, Pomona and Swarthmore are need-aware. If your family has little money, Bowdoin belongs on your list.
How to apply for Bowdoin financial aid
- Apply for admission first: international applicants do not submit aid materials until after an admission decision.
- File the CSS Profile after admission: Bowdoin no longer accepts the ISFAA or the IACAC form in its place. If you cannot complete the CSS Profile or the fee is a burden, email the Student Aid Office (sao@bowdoin.edu) after you are admitted.
- Submit within seven days: admitted students must send all aid materials within seven days of the offer.
- Check the portal: your aid award appears in the admissions portal once everything is in.
Canadian citizens follow a different timing for the CSS Profile, so they should read Bowdoin’s student aid instructions.
Bowdoin admission requirements for international students: the application
- Application: Common App, Coalition on Scoir or QuestBridge, including a personal essay. Applications open on 1 August.
- Bowdoin supplement: in the Common App questions section or as a separate Scoir form.
- Secondary school report and transcript: translated into English, preferably by your school or a certifying official.
- National exam results: official WASSCE, KCSE, IGCSE or similar results. A-level and IB students in their final year send predicted grades; graduates send final results.
- Counsellor recommendation: if your school has no counsellor, a teacher or principal can complete it.
- Teacher recommendation: from a junior- or senior-year teacher of a core subject (English, maths, lab science, social science or a foreign language).
- One more recommendation: a second teacher, or a coach, employer, faith leader, community leader or peer.
- Mid-year report: plus first-quarter senior grades for Early Decision I applicants.
- Fee: a non-refundable application fee, or a fee waiver.
Testing policy
Bowdoin is test optional. Send SAT or ACT scores only if they help your file; almost half of the Class of 2030 did not.
English requirements
English tests are optional and there is no minimum score. Bowdoin accepts TOEFL, IELTS, the Duolingo English Test and Cambridge English, and reviews any score you send. Once sent, a score cannot be deleted. Bowdoin offers no ESL classes, so every student must already read, write and speak English at college level. Duolingo fee coupons may be available to applicants who have submitted and received portal access, case by case.
Interviews and video
Bowdoin accepts InitialView interviews or VIVA, Vericant’s Guided View with BASE or its shorter guided interview, the interview built into the Duolingo English Test, and Bowdoin’s own optional Video Response. It weighs all of them equally. Book early so the report arrives before your deadline.
Bowdoin deadlines for fall 2027 entry
| Round | Application due | Notification |
|---|---|---|
| Early Decision I (binding) | 15 November 2026 | Mid-December 2026 |
| Early Decision II (binding) | 5 January 2027 | Early February 2027 |
| Regular Decision | 5 January 2027 | Mid-March 2027 |
| Transfer | 1 March 2027 | Early May 2027 |
Bowdoin’s table also lists aid due dates (15 November, 5 January and 1 February), but those are for US applicants. International applicants file aid forms within seven days of being admitted.
Deadline
Early Decision I closes on 15 November 2026. Because Bowdoin is need-blind for international students, choosing ED does not put an aided applicant at a disadvantage on cost grounds, but the offer is binding.
How to write the Bowdoin supplemental essays, with a sample opening
Bowdoin’s deadlines page lists two supplement essays of up to 250 words each and describes them as optional. One asks you to pick a line from “The Offer of the College”, the short statement of values Bowdoin has used for over a century, and reflect on it. The other, “Navigating Through Differences”, asks about an experience or perspective that shaped how you deal with difference.
- Write them anyway: skipping them throws away 500 words in which you could show why Bowdoin fits you.
- Choose a line you can live up to: read the Offer, pick one phrase and connect it to something you have done, not something you hope to feel.
- Keep it local: a specific moment in your town or school beats a general statement about diversity.
Sample opening for the Offer of the College essay, for illustration only:
“‘To count Nature a familiar acquaintance’ sounds grand until you have spent three dry seasons logging rainfall for your school’s farm club. I chose that line because my notebook is full of a familiar acquaintance who rarely does what the almanac says.”
What happens after you apply
- Portal: Bowdoin sends portal credentials. Use it to check documents, self-report English scores and record the optional Video Response from late October.
- Mid-year report: your school sends it in the new year.
- Decision: mid-December (ED I), early February (ED II) or mid-March (RD).
- Aid: admitted international students file the CSS Profile and documents within seven days, and the award appears in the portal.
- Enrol and visa: accept the offer, then receive your I-20 for the F-1 visa. Health insurance details reach families in July.
Common mistakes international applicants make
- Sending aid forms before admission: Bowdoin does not want them from international applicants until you are admitted.
- Using the ISFAA: Bowdoin no longer accepts it in place of the CSS Profile.
- Leaving out national exam results: official WASSCE, KCSE, IGCSE or similar results are expected if your country has them.
- Assuming optional means irrelevant: with no ESL classes, readers look hard at your English. If your schooling was not in English, a strong test score or interview helps.
- Applying as a transfer and expecting aid: international transfers are not eligible for Bowdoin aid.
- Ignoring the seven-day aid window: get translated income papers ready before decisions come out.
Costs Bowdoin aid may not cover
- Your family’s calculated contribution, if any.
- Flights between home and Maine, which Bowdoin treats as generally part of the family’s share.
- English test and interview fees before you apply.
- The US visa application fee and SEVIS I-901 fee; check current amounts on official US government sites.
- Heavy winter clothing. Maine winters are cold and snowy.
- Summer living costs if you stay in the US.
Majors, campus and city
Bowdoin is a small residential liberal arts college in Brunswick, a coastal town in Maine about two hours from Boston and under six hours by road from New York City. The Princeton Review ranks it first for dorms and second for campus food. Once enrolled you choose a major across the arts, humanities, social sciences and sciences, with small classes taught by faculty.
Bowdoin graduate admissions
Bowdoin is an undergraduate college and has no graduate programmes. Plan any master’s or PhD study at another university after you graduate.

Who should apply to Bowdoin
Apply if you are a top student who needs substantial aid, want a small college with close teaching, and like the idea of a coastal town with real winters. Because Bowdoin is need-blind for international students, it is one of the few places where asking for aid does not change your odds.
It is a poor fit if you want a big city, a professional degree such as engineering or business, or a college where you can transfer in from abroad with aid.
