Williams College Admission Requirements for International Students 2027: Acceptance Rate, Tuition, Scholarships and Deadlines

Williams College Admission Requirements for International Students 2027: Acceptance Rate, Tuition, Scholarships and Deadlines
Williams meets 100% of need for international students with grants only. Here are the 7.4% acceptance rate, the $95,960 cost for 2026-27, test and English rules, aid steps and the 15 November 2026 and 4 January 2027 deadlines.

Williams College admission requirements for international students are the same as for American applicants. You apply through the Common App, Apply Coalition with Scoir or QuestBridge, send your school report, a counsellor letter, two teacher recommendations and a $65 fee (or a waiver), and you choose whether to send SAT or ACT scores because Williams is test optional. There are no extra forms for students from abroad. If English is not your first language or your school’s language of instruction, Williams encourages you to send a TOEFL, IELTS or Duolingo score.

Getting in is the hard part. Williams offered places to 7.4% of applicants for the Class of 2030, its lowest rate on record, and it is ranked No. 1 among National Liberal Arts Colleges in the U.S. News 2027 edition. Money is the other big question. Williams meets 100% of demonstrated need with grants only, and about 70% of its international students receive aid averaging more than $90,000 a year, but admission for international applicants who ask for aid is need-aware. For fall 2027 entry, Early Decision closes on 15 November 2026 and Regular Decision on 4 January 2027. I checked every figure below on Williams’ own pages on 29 October 2026.

Williams College ranking and headline numbers

U.S. News published its 2027 Best Colleges rankings on 22 September 2026. Williams kept the top spot among National Liberal Arts Colleges, ahead of Amherst at No. 2 and a five-way tie for No. 3 that includes Bowdoin, Pomona and Swarthmore. It was also No. 1 in the 2026 edition.

Williams College acceptance rate and class profile

Williams publishes its admission numbers on its fast facts page, and the student newspaper, the Williams Record, reported the figures for the class that started in fall 2026.

Williams does not publish a separate acceptance rate for international applicants, and I could not open its 2025-26 Common Data Set file, so the numbers above come from the college’s fast facts page and the Record. The Record’s figure of a 25.2% ED admit rate tells you how much Early Decision helps, but ED is binding, and an international student who needs aid should only use it after reading the aid section below.

Williams College tuition for international students in 2026-27

International students pay the same charges as everyone else. These are Williams’ published charges for 2026-27:

Item2026-27 amount
Tuition$76,300
Housing$9,830
Food$9,490
Activities and residential house fees$340
Total charges$95,960
Study away fee (only if you study away)$1,500
Books (estimate, outside the total)About $1,000

For 2025-26 the tuition was $72,170, so the jump is about $4,000 in one year. Williams has no online cost calculator for international students yet, so you cannot get an early estimate the way an American family can. Your number comes only after admission, from your aid application.

Williams College scholarships for international students: how aid works

Williams has no merit scholarships and no athletic scholarships. Every dollar of its aid is need-based, and the same policy applies to international students who ask for aid at the time they apply.

  • Full need: Williams says it meets 100% of every student’s demonstrated need.
  • Grants only: Williams says it was the first US college to give all aid as grants, with no loans and no required campus job in the package.
  • What aid can include: books for every aided student, travel home twice a year and personal costs such as a phone data plan.
  • How many get it: about 70% of international students receive Williams aid, with awards averaging more than $90,000 a year.
  • Need-aware admission: the Williams Record reported in 2022 that Williams is need-blind for US applicants and need-aware for international applicants. Williams’ international page does not use either term, so treat this as the current practice unless Williams says otherwise.

Need-aware means the committee can see that you asked for aid. It does not see the amount. In practice it makes admission somewhat harder for aided international applicants, yet most international students at Williams still receive aid, so asking is usually the right call if your family cannot pay close to $96,000 a year. You must answer “Yes” to “Do you intend to apply for financial aid?” on the application. If you say no, you should assume you will not get aid later.

How to apply for Williams financial aid

  1. Tick the aid question: answer “Yes” to the financial aid question when you submit the Common App or Scoir application.
  2. Wait for instructions: do not send financial documents with your application. Williams’ Student Financial Services office sends international aid instructions together with your admission offer.
  3. Complete the forms quickly: Williams uses the CSS Profile (school code 3965) with documents uploaded through IDOC, the College Board’s document service. Follow whatever list SFS sends you, because the international document list is set in the offer email.
  4. Get your award: Williams says awards are usually ready within seven days of a complete aid application.

Dual US citizens and US permanent residents living abroad follow the domestic process instead, which includes the CSS Profile and tax returns before the deadline.

Williams College admission requirements for international students: what you send

  1. Application: Common App, Apply Coalition with Scoir, or the QuestBridge application. Williams is a QuestBridge partner.
  2. School report and transcript: sent by your school.
  3. Counsellor recommendation: one letter from your school counsellor or the person who plays that role.
  4. Two teacher recommendations: from teachers of academic subjects.
  5. Mid-year report: your counsellor sends mid-year grades in February. If your school cannot meet that date, email Williams with a date. Williams says a late report will not count against you.
  6. Application fee: $65, or a Williams fee waiver selected in the Williams section of the Common App or at the end of the Scoir supplement.
  7. Early Decision Agreement: ED applicants only.

Optional extras include an academic paper from the past year, an arts portfolio through SlideRoom, and a short abstract of any serious science or maths research. Williams does not interview applicants. International applicants who have done an InitialView interview may share it.

Testing policy

Williams is test optional, so the SAT and ACT are your choice. If you send scores, Williams superscores both tests and verifies the scores of students who enrol. The SAT code is 3965 and the ACT code is 1936. AP, IB and A-level results are optional extras. If your national exam results are strong, they can do the job a test score would do for a US student.

English requirements

Williams has no published minimum. It encourages applicants whose first language or language of instruction is not English to send a score and lists the ranges it typically sees from competitive applicants:

TestTypical competitive range at Williams
TOEFL iBT (scale used from January 2026)5 to 6
TOEFL iBT (older 0 to 120 scale)100 to 120
IELTS7.5 to 9
Duolingo English Test135 to 160

You can type the score into the application, email a screenshot to admission@williams.edu or have the test agency send it.

Williams’ deadlines page gives 4 January for Regular Decision. An older copy of a Williams page and the Common App listing for the last cycle show 5 January, so check the portal before you submit, and aim to finish before the first date anyway.

Deadline

Early Decision closes on 15 November 2026. ED is binding, so only use it if Williams is your clear first choice and you are ready to accept the aid offer Williams makes.

How to write your Williams essays, with a sample opening

Williams does not require a writing supplement. That puts more weight on your Common App personal essay, your activities list and your teachers’ letters. Williams’ teaching is built around small classes and its tutorials, where two students meet a professor and take turns presenting and critiquing papers, so readers look for students who like arguing with ideas on paper.

  • Write about thinking: pick a moment where you changed your mind, tested an idea or argued with a source. Feelings alone make a weak Williams essay.
  • Be specific about where you are from: name the school, the town, the exam, the shortage or the club. Detail is what lets a reader in Massachusetts picture your life.
  • Use the optional paper: if you have a strong graded essay, history project or extended essay from the last year, send it with the assignment prompt. Lab reports are not accepted.
  • Keep the essay to one story: 650 words is short. One scene and what it taught you is enough.

Sample opening, for illustration only:

“Our chemistry teacher left in March, and the textbook stopped at chapter nine. For the next four months, six of us taught the rest of the course to each other from a borrowed university syllabus, and I learned that I explain things best when someone is allowed to tell me I am wrong.”

That opening works because it gives a real situation, a role and a habit of mind in three sentences. Write your own; do not copy this.

What happens after you apply

  1. Portal access: Williams emails you a link to its applicant portal, where you can check missing documents and add test scores.
  2. Mid-year grades: your school sends them in February. ED applicants who are deferred move to the Regular Decision pool.
  3. Decision: ED results come in mid-December. RD results come by early April. Williams can also offer a waitlist place; in 2024-25, 25 waitlisted students were admitted.
  4. Aid offer: admitted international students receive aid instructions with the offer, submit documents and usually get the award within seven days.
  5. Reply and visa: accept by 1 May 2027, then Williams issues the I-20 you need for the F-1 student visa interview.

Common mistakes international applicants make

  • Answering “No” to the aid question to look stronger: you cannot count on aid later, and the cost is close to $96,000 a year.
  • Sending bank statements with the application: Williams asks international applicants not to send aid documents until after admission.
  • Treating English scores as optional when they are not: they are optional on paper, but if your schooling was not in English, a missing score leaves the committee guessing.
  • Using ED without checking the aid fit: ED is binding. Families who need a precise figure before committing should apply in Regular Decision.
  • Late mid-year reports: many schools outside the US do not issue mid-year grades. Ask your school early how it will report them.
  • Paying an agent: there is no separate Williams scholarship form to buy. The only aid route is the one in this guide.

Costs Williams aid may not cover

Williams aid is generous. It covers books, two trips home a year and personal costs for aided students. A few costs still fall on you, especially before you arrive:

  • Test fees for TOEFL, IELTS or Duolingo, and for the SAT if you choose to sit it.
  • The US visa application fee and the SEVIS I-901 fee, paid before your visa interview. Check the current amounts on the US State Department and SEVP websites.
  • Medical checks and vaccinations the college asks for before enrolment.
  • Winter clothing. Williamstown is in the Berkshire hills of western Massachusetts, and winters are long and cold.
  • Summer housing and food if you stay in the US between years.
  • Whatever share of the cost your aid offer expects your family to pay. If your family has some income, that amount will not be zero.

Majors, campus and city

Williams teaches 37 majors across three divisions, and about 45% of students complete more than one. The January Winter Study term gives students four weeks for one focused course or project, and tutorials pair two students with one professor. Most first-year classes are small, and the student-faculty ratio is 7:1.

The campus is in Williamstown, a small town in the Berkshires of northwestern Massachusetts. Boston is about 135 miles away and New York City about 165 miles. Expect a rural college town with hiking and skiing nearby and almost all social life on campus. About 30% of students play a varsity sport, and there are more than 230 student organisations.

Williams graduate admissions in brief

Williams is mainly an undergraduate college, with about 49 graduate students. It runs two small master’s programmes:

  • MA in Policy Economics (Center for Development Economics): a 10-month programme from August to June for public-sector and NGO professionals, mostly from developing countries, who average about five years of work experience. There is no application fee, most participants receive at least partial funding, and TOEFL or IELTS is strongly recommended. The CDE has set its deadline in mid-December in past cycles; check the current date on its site.
  • Graduate Program in the History of Art: a two-year MA run with the Clark Art Institute.

Who should apply to Williams

Apply if you have top grades in the hardest courses your school offers, you enjoy writing and discussion, and you want a small residential college more than a big-city university. It suits students who want close contact with professors and are happy in a quiet town for four years.

Think twice if you want a narrow professional degree such as engineering, nursing or business administration, which Williams does not offer as majors, or if you need a big city around you. If aid is essential and you want an admission process that ignores need, Amherst and Bowdoin are need-blind for international students and are worth adding.
