MIT engineering graduate admission for international students runs through individual departments, so the rules for mechanical engineering are not the same as the rules for civil engineering or EECS. For fall 2027 entry, most MIT engineering departments close applications on 1 December 2026, the application fee is $90, and the GRE is no longer required in the big departments (some no longer accept it at all). You apply through MIT’s central portal, but each department sets its own test, letter and statement rules.
MIT’s School of Engineering is ranked No. 1 in the U.S. News 2026 Best Graduate Schools engineering list (released 7 April 2026), and it is not tied. PhD students are normally funded through research assistantships, teaching assistantships or fellowships that pay tuition and a salary. Master’s applicants should expect a harder funding picture. This guide covers each piece in the order you will need it.

Engineering departments and graduate programmes at MIT
MIT’s School of Engineering lists the departments below on its graduate admissions information page. Each has its own admissions page, its own programme listing on the Office of Graduate Education (OGE) site and, in most cases, a student-run Graduate Application Assistance Program (GAAP) that reviews drafts for free.
| Department or institute | Main graduate degrees | Note for international applicants |
|---|---|---|
| Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (EECS) | SM, EE/ECS Engineer, PhD, ScD | No terminal master’s for external applicants; the SM is earned on the way to the doctorate. MEng is for MIT undergraduates only. |
| Mechanical Engineering (MechE) | SM, Engineer, PhD, ScD | Also runs the naval engineering 2N programmes, which still need the GRE. |
| Aeronautics and Astronautics (AeroAstro) | SM, PhD, ScD | Does not require or accept the GRE. |
| Chemical Engineering (ChemE) | PhD, MSCEP, PhDCEP | All admitted students are offered financial support, per the department. |
| Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE) | SM, MEng, PhD | GRE optional; IELTS minimum is 7.5, higher than most. |
| Materials Science and Engineering (DMSE) | SM, PhD, ScD | Separate DMSE application page. |
| Nuclear Science and Engineering (NSE) | SM, PhD, ScD | Has its own GAAP. |
| Biological Engineering (BE) | PhD | Research doctorate only. |
| Institute for Data, Systems and Society (IDSS) | SM and PhD programmes | Interdisciplinary. |
| Institute for Medical Engineering and Science (Harvard-MIT HST) | PhD, MD-PhD | Joint with Harvard. |
The School also lists interdisciplinary master’s programmes such as System Design and Management, Supply Chain Management, Leaders for Global Operations and the Technology and Policy Program. These charge their own tuition and are usually self-funded, so treat them as a separate decision from a research degree.
MIT engineering GRE requirement by department
Many applicants pay for a GRE their department will not read, so check the rule before you book a test date.
| Department | GRE policy for fall 2027 | Source |
|---|---|---|
| EECS | Not required | OGE EECS programme page |
| Mechanical Engineering | Not required, except the 2N and 2N6 naval programmes | MechE admissions page |
| AeroAstro | Not required and not accepted | AeroAstro graduate admission page |
| Chemical Engineering (PhD and MSCEP) | Not required and not accepted; PhDCEP asks for self-reported scores | ChemE apply page |
| Civil and Environmental Engineering | Optional; scores older than five years are not accepted | CEE graduate admissions page |
| Transportation (with CEE) | Required and cannot be waived; 80th percentile or better expected in all three sections | CEE graduate admissions page |
If you are applying to a department where the GRE is optional, I would only send a score that clearly helps you, for example a high quantitative score from someone whose undergraduate grades are uneven. MIT’s institution code is 3514.
English language requirements
At Institute level MIT accepts IELTS Academic, TOEFL iBT, Cambridge English (Advanced or Proficiency) and the Duolingo English Test, and leaves the minimum scores to departments. You are exempt if English is your home language, or if you completed a 3 to 4 year undergraduate degree at an accredited English-medium institution in an eligible country within the past five years. Departments can also grant their own waivers.
| Department | TOEFL iBT | IELTS Academic | Duolingo |
|---|---|---|---|
| EECS | 100 | 7 | Not listed on the programme page |
| Mechanical Engineering | 100 (or 5.0 on the 2026 TOEFL scale) | 7.0 | 135 |
| Civil and Environmental Engineering | 100 | 7.5 | 135 |
| AeroAstro | 100 | 7.0 | Not listed |
ETS moved the TOEFL iBT to a new 1 to 6 score scale from January 2026. That is why MechE quotes both 100 (old scale) and 5.0 (new scale). Check which version your score report uses before deciding whether you meet the minimum.
Application fee and fee waivers
The MIT graduate application fee is $90 per programme. MIT’s fee waiver policy is strict for international applicants: you qualify only if you are currently studying at a U.S. college or university and have taken part in a recognised graduate research preparation programme. MIT says it cannot grant a waiver to an international applicant on financial hardship alone. If you are applying from Lagos, Nairobi or Accra, plan to pay the fee.
MIT engineering application deadlines for fall 2027
| Department | Deadline | Note |
|---|---|---|
| EECS | 1 December 2026, 11:59 p.m. Eastern | Fall entry only |
| Mechanical Engineering | 1 December 2026 | Early Admission route: 1 November 2026 (for students who already have a faculty sponsor) |
| AeroAstro | 1 December 2026, 11:59 p.m. Eastern | Completion deadline |
| Chemical Engineering | 1 December 2026, 11:59 p.m. Eastern | Complete application due |
| Civil and Environmental Engineering | Check the CEE timeline page | Fall entry only; CEE ran webinars on 20 October and 23 November 2026 |
MechE’s Early Admission date of 1 November 2026 is still ahead at the time of writing, but it is meant for applicants who already have a named MIT faculty member backing them. Most international applicants should work to the 1 December date and submit at least a week early so recommenders have time.
Documents you need
- Online application: through apply.mit.edu, one application per programme.
- Statement of Objectives: CEE caps it at two pages; Transportation at one to one and a half pages. EECS and MechE ask for a statement of objectives too.
- Three letters of recommendation: EECS, MechE and CEE all ask for three. MechE says a minimum of three.
- Transcripts: uploaded with the application. Official documents are requested for verification only if you receive an offer.
- CV or resume: requested in most department applications.
- English test score: unless you qualify for an exemption.
- GRE score: only where the department still accepts it.
MIT does not ask for a WES or other credential evaluation at the application stage on the pages I checked. Upload your university transcript as issued, with an official English translation if it is not in English.
PhD funding at MIT engineering
Doctoral students at MIT are usually funded in one of three ways: a research assistantship (RA) paid from a professor’s grant, a teaching assistantship (TA), or a fellowship. MIT says these cover tuition fully or in large part, plus a salary or stipend, and fellowships also cover student health insurance. Chemical Engineering goes further and states that all admitted students are offered financial support.
MIT’s current salary and stipend rates page lists these 12-month base rates:
| Appointment | Monthly | Annual (12 months) |
|---|---|---|
| Research assistant, doctoral | $4,269 | $51,226 |
| Research assistant, master’s | $3,899 | $46,793 |
| Teaching assistant, doctoral | $4,369 | $52,429 |
| Teaching assistant, master’s | $4,369 | $52,429 |
MIT notes that RA and TA pay is under negotiation with the Graduate Student Union, so these figures can change. Fellows received a 3% increase from 1 June 2026, according to MIT’s AY2027 stipend notice.
Named fellowships
The School of Engineering lists its own Graduate Student Fellowships and the MathWorks Fellowships. These are awarded inside MIT, usually after departments nominate students, so you do not apply for them separately at admission. External awards that international students can hold include Fulbright (through your home country’s U.S. embassy or Fulbright commission) and employer or government sponsorships. U.S. awards such as NSF GRFP are for citizens and permanent residents only.
What about master’s funding?
In EECS there is no separate terminal master’s for outside applicants, so admission is effectively doctoral and comes with funding. In departments that do admit SM students, funding depends on finding an RA position. The interdisciplinary professional master’s programmes are generally self-funded. If you are applying for an SM, assume you will pay unless your offer letter says otherwise.
Tuition and cost of attendance, 2026-27
MIT charges the same tuition to every graduate student regardless of nationality. According to MIT Student Financial Services’ graduate cost of attendance for 2026-27:
| Item | 9 months | 12 months |
|---|---|---|
| Tuition | $66,720 | $89,775 |
| Health insurance | $5,148 | $5,148 |
| Housing | $17,100 | $22,800 |
| Food | $7,830 | $10,440 |
| Books and supplies | $1,161 | $1,548 |
| Personal | $7,794 | $10,392 |
| Total | $109,017 | $144,315 |
The fall and spring tuition is $33,360 per term (MIT Registrar schedule of fees, March 2026). For an international SM student who is not on an RA or TA, the I-20 will be issued against a figure close to these totals, so you need to show that much in funds or sponsorship.
International fee waivers
MIT will not waive the $90 application fee for an international applicant on financial hardship alone. Budget for it per programme, and do not wait for a waiver decision that will not come.
How to contact potential PhD advisers
MIT admissions decisions are made by department committees, but faculty interest still matters, especially for research-heavy programmes. Read two or three recent papers from each professor before you write. Keep the email short and specific, and never send a generic message to twenty people at once.
For illustration, an opening could read: “Dear Professor X, I am a final-year mechanical engineering student at the University of Ibadan, and I read your 2025 paper on low-cost soft robotic grippers. My final-year project tested a silicone gripper design using local materials, and I would like to ask whether you expect to take new PhD students in fall 2027.” Then attach your CV and stop. Two short paragraphs is enough.
Some MIT units, such as the Center for Computational Science and Engineering, say they do not offer pre-application advising or arrange meetings, so do not be offended by no reply. MechE’s Early Admission route is the exception where a named faculty sponsor is part of the process.
How to write the Statement of Objectives for MIT
- Start with the research question: one or two sentences on the problem you want to work on, written plainly.
- Show evidence: projects, theses, internships or publications that prove you have done research, with what you personally did.
- Name the fit: two or three MIT faculty or labs whose work matches yours, and why.
- State your goal: what you plan to do after the degree.
- Respect the limit: CEE allows two pages; going over looks careless.
I would avoid opening with a childhood story. MIT reviewers read thousands of these. A clear first paragraph about the technical problem you care about does more work than any anecdote.
Common mistakes international applicants make
- Converting your CGPA yourself: report your grade exactly as it appears on the transcript (for example 4.52/5.00) and let the reviewers read it with your school’s scale. A home-made 4.0 conversion can look like misreporting.
- Late transcripts: many African universities take weeks to release transcripts. Request yours in September, not late November.
- Assuming a three-year degree is enough: MIT’s English exemption mentions 3 to 4 year degrees, but programme eligibility is decided by the department. Ask before you apply if your bachelor’s is three years.
- Sending GRE scores to AeroAstro or ChemE: they do not accept them, so the score report fee is wasted.
- Using a weak recommender for the third letter: a lecturer who barely knows you hurts more than it helps.
- Applying for an SM without a funding plan: the I-20 requires proof of funds for the full cost.
Costs the funding does not cover
- The $90 application fee per programme, plus English test and score report fees.
- The SEVIS I-901 fee and the U.S. visa application fee, paid before your visa interview.
- Flights to Boston and initial housing deposits.
- Summer living costs if your appointment is not 12 months.
- Winter clothing on arrival. Cambridge winters are cold, and this is a real first-month cost for students from warm countries.
STEM OPT after graduation
Engineering degrees fall under CIP codes on the U.S. Department of Homeland Security STEM Designated Degree Program List, so MIT engineering graduates on F-1 visas are normally eligible for 12 months of OPT plus the 24-month STEM extension. Confirm the CIP code printed on your I-20 with MIT’s International Students Office.
Who should apply
- Apply if you have research experience you can describe in detail, a top-of-class academic record, and a clear match with two or more MIT faculty.
- Apply if you want a funded PhD and can show you are ready to start research in year one.
- Think twice if you want a one-year coursework master’s paid from personal funds. MIT’s structure favours research degrees, and EECS has no external terminal master’s.
- Think twice if your references are weak. Three strong letters are non-negotiable at this level.

Frequently asked questions
Does MIT require the GRE for engineering master’s and PhD programmes?
No, not in most departments. EECS and Mechanical Engineering do not require it, AeroAstro and Chemical Engineering do not accept it, and CEE treats it as optional; only Transportation and MechE’s naval 2N programmes still require it.
What is the MIT engineering graduate application deadline for 2027?
For fall 2027 entry, the main deadline in EECS, MechE, AeroAstro and ChemE is 1 December 2026 at 11:59 p.m. Eastern time. Check your own department’s page, as deadlines are set per programme.
Is MIT engineering PhD fully funded for international students?
PhD students are normally supported by RA or TA appointments or fellowships covering tuition and a salary, and international students are treated the same way. MIT’s current doctoral RA rate is $4,269 a month.
Can international students get an MIT application fee waiver?
Only if they are currently studying at a U.S. university and have taken part in a recognised research preparation programme. Financial hardship alone does not qualify an international applicant.
