UTRIP Summer Internship 2027 at the University of Tokyo: Funding, Eligibility and Deadline

UTRIP is the University of Tokyo’s six-week summer research internship for international science undergraduates, with free housing and a 140,000 to 170,000 yen allowance. Eligibility, documents, the personal statement and the January deadline.

UTRIP, the University of Tokyo Research Internship Program, is a six-week summer research internship at the university’s Graduate School of Science on the Hongo campus in Tokyo. Bachelor’s students in natural sciences from universities outside Japan work in a lab in physics, astronomy, chemistry, earth and planetary science or biological sciences. Participants on the GSS-UTRIP Scholarship get free housing for the 43-night stay and a one-time allowance of 140,000 to 170,000 yen, depending on where their university is.

The Deadline for the UTRIP summer internship is 7 January 2027 at 17:00 Japan time (08:00 GMT), with recommendation letters due by 14 January 2027. These dates follow the 2026 round, whose application period ran from 25 November 2025 to 7 January 2026. UTRIP 2026 itself ran from 24 June to 4 August 2026. The university usually announces the new application period in mid-November, so the 2027 call should appear on the UTRIP site within weeks.

Two smaller cut-offs matter as much as the deadline. In 2026 the UTRIP office only answered application questions sent before noon JST on 5 January and recommendation questions sent before noon on 9 January. If you are unsure about anything, ask in December.

What UTRIP interns actually do

You spend six weeks as a member of one Graduate School of Science lab, working on a project set by the host faculty member. UTRIP describes itself as an intensive summer research programme that gives undergraduates a head start towards an M.S. or Ph.D. in the natural sciences. In practice you do the work of a junior graduate student: lab meetings, experiments, data analysis or observation, depending on the field.

The 2026 schedule published on the UTRIP programme schedule page looked like this:

Date (2026)Event
24 JuneOrientation, campus tour and opening ceremony
25 June to 1 JulyOptional intensive introductory Japanese class (afternoons)
10 JulyOne-day excursion outside Tokyo
4 AugustOral presentations and closing ceremony

Interns are expected to put full effort into the project, stay for the whole six weeks, attend all academic and social events, present orally on the last day and submit a final research report, approved by the supervisor, within two weeks of finishing.

The labs and projects change every year. Each call comes with a list of hosting labs and project descriptions, and you choose up to two.

UTRIP funding, travel and housing: what is covered

The UTRIP financial support page describes two kinds of support. Most international participants receive the GSS-UTRIP Scholarship.

Location of your universityOne-time allowance (GSS-UTRIP Scholarship)
Asia, Eastern Russia, Oceania and the Pacific140,000 yen
Europe, Western Russia, North America160,000 yen
Latin America and the Caribbean, Africa, Middle East170,000 yen

The allowance is paid once, on arrival, and it is meant to cover your round-trip airfare and daily expenses in Japan, including local transport. Housing for the 43-night stay is free. You cannot hold other financial support for the same period or purpose.

Students enrolled at universities in the United States, whatever their citizenship, can instead apply separately for the FUTI Award from Friends of UTokyo, Inc., worth up to US$2,000, also with free housing. A student who wins it does not receive the GSS-UTRIP Scholarship; if the FUTI application fails, the GSS-UTRIP Scholarship applies.

CostCovered?Notes
Housing (43 nights)YesYou must stay in the school’s designated housing for the whole programme
AirfareThrough the allowanceYou book and pay first; the allowance arrives after you land
Food and local transportThrough the allowanceWhatever is left after your flight
Health insuranceNoYou must have cover for the whole programme before arriving in Japan
Visa and passport feesNoDepends on your nationality

The allowance is a fixed amount, so the further you fly, the less is left. A student in Lagos or Nairobi receives 170,000 yen, but a return ticket to Tokyo can take a large share of that. You also pay for the ticket weeks before the money arrives. Plan to front the airfare from savings, family or a university travel fund.

You may not leave early without written consent from your host supervisor and the head of the International Team, Academic Affairs Group.

UTRIP eligibility

Nationals of every country can apply. The official conditions:

  • You have completed at least one full year of a bachelor’s degree when you apply.
  • You are enrolled in a bachelor’s programme (or the bachelor’s-level years of an integrated programme) at a university outside Japan, and you will return to it after UTRIP.
  • Your major is a natural science or a related field.
  • You are interested in a long-term career in science.
  • You can commit to all six weeks, full time.
  • You have health insurance valid for the whole programme, with proof before you arrive in Japan.

Priority goes to students in the third year of a four-year degree or the second year of a three-year degree, though other years are encouraged to apply. Final-year students who will have graduated by June do not meet the return-to-university rule. Students already at Japanese universities are not eligible.

English: you need a TOEFL, IELTS or equivalent score unless English is your first language or you have had English-medium education for the past eight years without a break. Expired scores are accepted if you can show proof when asked. Many students from anglophone Africa, South Asia and the Caribbean qualify for the exemption; keep a letter from your school or university confirming English-medium instruction just in case.

If you are selected, you will need an original official transcript with stamp and signature for enrolment. Ask your registry for it in January so it is ready by March. For tips on briefing your professor, see our guide to recommendation letters.

How to apply for UTRIP, step by step

  1. Study the hosting labs: when the call opens, read every project in your field and shortlist two you can explain in your own words.
  2. Ask your professor: in November, with your CV and the two project titles. Their letter is due a week after your application.
  3. Open the online application: through the UTRIP Apply Now page and enter your personal details and lab choices.
  4. Write the personal statement: 700 to 1,000 words, covering the three questions UTRIP asks (below).
  5. Add education and CV details: including your GPA or your explanation of how you calculated it.
  6. Upload your scans: transcript and English certificate if needed.
  7. Submit by 17:00 JST: late applications and late letters are not considered.

How to write the UTRIP personal statement

UTRIP asks you to explain three things: why you chose the project, what qualifies you for it, and whether you plan to apply to the Graduate School of Science after graduating. With 700 to 1,000 words you have room for detail, so spend it on projects, skills and results. UTRIP has no separate research proposal; this statement is where you show you understand the project.

  1. Why this project (about 300 words): what the lab studies, what part of the question you find interesting, and how it connects to something you have already done or read.
  2. Why you (about 400 words): your relevant courses, lab skills, programming, and one project told properly: the question, what you did and what came out of it.
  3. Your plans (about 200 words): an honest answer on graduate study, including whether you would consider the University of Tokyo. You do not have to promise to apply, but UTRIP exists partly to find future graduate students.

A sample opening line: “Last semester I wrote a Python script to clean seismograph records from our department’s station, and the noise I kept filtering out turned out to be the subject of your lab’s project on ambient seismic signals.” Replace each detail with your own experience.

Selectors are faculty who will supervise you. They want to see that you read their project page, that you have the basic skills to start working in week one, and that you will finish the six weeks.

UTRIP selection process and results

Selection is based on all submitted documents; UTRIP does not list an interview stage. Selected applicants receive an email between mid and late March and must confirm participation by a stated date. The UTRIP site then publishes the list of participants, which happened on 28 April in 2026. UTRIP does not publish how many students it takes each year.

Common UTRIP mistakes

  • Applying in your final year when you will not return to your university after the programme.
  • Choosing labs only by department name without reading the project descriptions.
  • Writing far below 700 words, or ignoring the question about graduate study.
  • Forgetting the GPA explanation when your university does not issue an official GPA.
  • Leaving the recommendation to January, when many professors are on leave.
  • Assuming UTRIP pays your flight up front. You buy the ticket; the allowance comes on arrival.
  • Arriving without health insurance that covers the whole programme.

Who should apply, and who should not

Apply if you are a second- or third-year science undergraduate, you have done some lab, field or computational work, you are curious about graduate school and you can spend six weeks in Tokyo from late June. UTRIP fits a physics, chemistry, earth science, astronomy or biology student who wants to test whether research suits them.

Skip it if you study engineering, medicine or a social science, if your exams fall in July, if you will have graduated by June, or if you cannot pay for a flight before the allowance arrives. I would also be cautious if you need a stipend to live on; the allowance covers travel and daily costs, not more.

FAQs about the UTRIP summer internship

Is UTRIP fully funded?

Nearly. The GSS-UTRIP Scholarship gives free housing and a one-time allowance of 140,000 to 170,000 yen for airfare and daily costs. You pay for health insurance and anything the allowance does not cover.

When is the UTRIP 2027 deadline?

The Deadline is 7 January 2027 at 17:00 JST, with recommendation letters due by 14 January 2027. The 2026 round closed on 7 January 2026.

Can first-year students apply for UTRIP?

No. You must have completed at least one full year of your bachelor’s degree when you apply. Third-year students in four-year programmes get priority.

Do I need IELTS or TOEFL for UTRIP?

Only if English is not your first language and you have not had eight continuous years of English-medium education. Expired scores are accepted if you can provide proof.
