The Glenmore Medical Postgraduate Scholarship at the University of Edinburgh, listed by the university as the Glenmore Postgraduate Scholarship, pays full tuition fees for a medical or health master’s for students from developing countries. It covers selected online part-time programmes and some one-year on-campus programmes. The university says it would particularly welcome applicants from Africa.

Is it still offered? Yes. The scholarship is still listed on the University of Edinburgh’s postgraduate funding pages for the 2026-2027 session, with three awards. That round closed on 28 May 2026. The 2027-2028 call has not been published yet, so the deadline below is 28 May 2027 (based on this year’s date; confirm on the official page when the call opens). Here is what the award covers, who qualifies, and how to apply, checked on 25 October 2026.

What the Glenmore scholarship covers

The award pays full tuition fees for the whole length of your programme. For an online part-time MSc, that is usually three years of fees. For an on-campus course, it is one year. It is a tuition-only award, so the costs of living, visas and travel are not part of it.

  • Tuition: paid in full for the duration of the programme.
  • Living stipend: none.
  • Visa and flights: not covered, which matters only if you take an on-campus programme.
  • Study from home: online programmes let you keep your job and study part-time, so many working doctors and health staff choose them.

Eligible countries

You must be domiciled in a country on the OECD DAC List of ODA Recipients named in the call. The 2024-2025 page listed these countries, nearly all of them in Africa:

RegionCountries
West AfricaBenin, Burkina Faso, Cape Verde, Côte d’Ivoire, Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Guinea Bissau, Liberia, Mali, Mauritania, Niger, Nigeria, Senegal, Sierra Leone, Togo
Central AfricaCameroon, Central African Republic, Chad, Congo, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Gabon, Sao Tome and Principe

The 2026-2027 call pointed to the same DAC list, for 2024-2025 flows. The 2027-2028 call may use an updated list, so check it when the page changes.

Eligible programmes

Only programmes in human healthcare and medicine are covered. These were listed for 2026-2027:

ModeProgrammes
Online, part-time (3 years)MSc Critical Care, Clinical Education, Clinical Management of Pain, Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases, Clinical Trials, Data Science for Health and Social Care, Epidemiology, Global Health and Infectious Diseases, Internal Medicine, Paediatric Emergency Medicine, Patient Safety and Clinical Human Factors, Primary Care Ophthalmology, Restorative Dentistry, Science Communication and Public Engagement, Surgical Sciences, Cancer Biology and Precision Oncology; MFM Family Medicine; MPH Public Health

The 2024-2025 list also included ChM Urology, ChM Vascular and Endovascular Surgery and MMedSci (by Research) Medical Sciences. If you want one of those, ask the university whether it will be on the 2027-2028 list.

Online or on campus: which route to pick

Because the award pays tuition only, the mode you choose decides how much money you need on top of it.

FactorOnline part-timeOn campus full-time
Length3 years (ChM: 2 years)1 year
Keep your jobYesUsually no
UK visa neededNoYes, with health surcharge
Living costs in EdinburghNoneA full year, self-funded
Programme rangeWide clinical range, from critical care to surgeryMostly research MSc courses plus anatomy and public health

For most applicants from eligible countries, I would choose the online route unless you already have funding for living costs. It also lets you use cases from your own hospital or clinic in assignments while you study.

Glenmore scholarship eligibility

  1. Admission: you must hold an offer for an eligible programme and have firmly accepted it, or intend to.
  2. Domicile: you must live in one of the eligible countries.
  3. Grades: the overseas equivalent of a UK first-class honours degree, achieved or expected.
  4. Priority: applicants who have not studied at master’s level before.
  5. After graduation: the university expects scholars to work in countries that will benefit most from their training.

Edge cases

  • Medical degrees without honours classes: MBBS and MBChB degrees are not classed like UK honours degrees. Check with the programme how it maps your grades, such as distinctions, to a first-class equivalent.
  • Living abroad: eligibility depends on where you are domiciled, so a Nigerian citizen living in the UK may not qualify, while a citizen of another country living in Kenya might. Ask the scholarships office if you are unsure.
  • Already have a master’s: you can still apply, but candidates without one are given priority.

Apply for admission first

You cannot reach the scholarship form until you have applied for your programme. Allow up to five working days after your admission application for system access, so apply for the programme by early May at the latest.

How to apply for the Glenmore scholarship

  1. Apply for your programme: submit an online admission application to the University of Edinburgh for an eligible programme.
  2. Get your login: after applying, you receive a University User Name (UUN). It can take up to five working days for access to work.
  3. Open MyEd: sign in to MyEd with your UUN and password, then go to the scholarship application in EUCLID.
  4. Write the personal statement: up to 3,500 characters, answering the three set questions.
  5. Submit before the deadline: by 23:59 UK time on the closing date. If you cannot log in, use the university’s student systems help page.
  6. Accept your offer: if you have not yet accepted your place firmly, do it as soon as you can.

How to write the Glenmore personal statement

3,500 characters is about 550 to 600 words. The 2024-2025 call set three questions. I would give each its own short section and answer it directly:

  1. What attracted you to the programme at Edinburgh? Name specific modules, the online format if it lets you keep working, or staff whose work you know.
  2. How will it benefit your career and personal development? Describe your current role, the skill gap, and the job you will do with the degree.
  3. How will it help you contribute to your community, region or country? Give a concrete local health problem and what you will do about it.

An example opening for the third question: “My district hospital has one anaesthetist for 400,000 people, and I spend two nights a week running its unit for critically ill patients without any formal critical care training.” Selectors are choosing three people from a large pool, so a precise need and a believable plan stand out. Use your own real figures.

What happens after you apply

Awards are based on academic merit and the personal statement. There is no interview mentioned in the call. In the 2024-2025 round, applicants heard the outcome by late June or early July, about a month after the deadline. If you win, the university confirms the award against your tuition fees, and you start your programme in September.

Costs the scholarship does not cover

  • Living costs: for on-campus programmes you need to fund a year in Edinburgh yourself.
  • Visa and health surcharge: on-campus students pay the UK student visa fee and the Immigration Health Surcharge.
  • Internet and equipment: online students need a reliable connection and a computer for three years.
  • English test: if your programme requires one, the test fee is yours.

Common mistakes

  • Applying for the scholarship before the programme. The form only opens after the admission application.
  • Leaving the admission application until the last week, then losing days waiting for UUN access.
  • Choosing a programme that is not on the list, such as a non-medical master’s.
  • Going over 3,500 characters, or writing one essay instead of answering the three questions.
  • Planning an on-campus year without money for living costs and a visa.

Who should apply and who should not

Apply if you are a doctor, dentist, nurse, public health worker or biomedical graduate living in an eligible country, with first-class results or their equivalent, and you want an Edinburgh master’s you can do while you keep working. The online route is the realistic one for most applicants, since the award does not pay living costs.

Look elsewhere if your grades are below first-class level, if you need a living stipend to study abroad, or if your field is not medical or health related. With only three awards, it is also wise to apply for at least one other scholarship in the same year.
