Bates College admission requirements for international students are short: a Common App or Coalition Application (Scoir), your school transcripts and school profile, recommendation letters, and an English test only if neither your native language nor your school’s language of instruction is English. SAT and ACT scores have been optional at Bates since 1984, and since September 2025 there is no application fee.
Bates admitted 16% of a record 12,009 applicants for the Class of 2030, and 9% of the class are non-US citizens. It is need-aware for international students but meets 100% of calculated need for those it admits, with grants and campus work and no loans. For fall 2027 entry, Early Decision I closes on 15 November 2026 and Early Decision II and Regular Decision on 10 January 2027. I checked every figure in this guide on Bates’s own pages on 29 October 2026.
Bates College ranking
Bates is tied #26 among National Liberal Arts Colleges in the U.S. News 2027 edition, published in September 2026, as reported by the Boston Globe. Bates was founded in 1855 as New England’s first co-educational college and is a charter member of NESCAC, the athletic conference it shares with ten other colleges.
Bates acceptance rate and Class of 2030 profile
Applications to Bates rose by 24% in one year, to a record 12,009 for the Class of 2030. Bates published this profile of the class that entered in fall 2026.
| Measure | Class of 2030 |
|---|---|
| Applications | 12,009 (a record, up 24%) |
| Acceptance rate | 16% |
| Yield (admitted students who enrolled) | 28% |
| Students enrolled | 553 |
| Students from outside the US | 8% |
| Non-US citizens | 9% |
| Countries represented | 29 |
| SAT Reading and Writing (middle 50%) | 690 to 750 |
| SAT Math (middle 50%) | 710 to 760 |
| ACT composite (middle 50%) | 31 to 34 |
| Students receiving Bates grants | 43% |
| Average need-based grant | $67,511 |
Slightly more than half of the class came in through Early Decision. Bates does not publish a separate acceptance rate for international applicants, and because it is need-aware for them, I would expect the rate for international students asking for large grants to be below 16%.
Bates tuition for international students (2026-27)
Bates charges one combined fee that covers tuition, housing and food. International students pay the same as US students, and they are enrolled in the Bates student health insurance plan automatically, so the insurance charge applies to you.
| Cost item (2026-27) | Amount | Billed by Bates? |
|---|---|---|
| Combined fee (tuition $73,760 plus food and housing $20,800) | $94,560 | Yes |
| First-year fee (one time) | $475 | Yes |
| Student health insurance (full year) | $2,352 | Yes, automatic for internationals |
| Books, course materials and supplies | $900 | No (estimate) |
| Personal expenses | $1,000 | No (estimate) |
| Transportation | $250 to $1,150 | No (estimate) |
| My total for a first-year international student | About $99,537 to $100,437 | Mixed |
Bates’s costs page does not print a total, so the last row is my own sum of the lines above it. Its transportation range is set for US travel; a return flight to West Africa, East Africa or South Asia usually costs more than $1,150, so raise that line for your own budget. Off-campus study adds $3,310 per semester for students who go abroad.
Bates scholarships for international students: how aid works
Bates gives need-based aid only. It does not offer merit scholarships to anyone, so the size of your award depends on what your family can pay.
- Need-aware admission: for international applicants, Bates considers whether you have asked for aid when it decides.
- Full calculated need: if you are admitted with aid, Bates meets 100% of the need it calculates.
- Grants and work, no loans: the package is Bates grants for up to eight semesters plus an on-campus job of up to 20 hours a week. Non-citizens are not given loans.
- Same award in every round: Early Decision and Regular Decision applicants receive the same aid.
- Ask now or never: you must request aid with your application. You cannot add a request later, and Bates does not take appeals from international students who did not apply.
- UWC Davis Scholars: graduates of United World Colleges can receive up to $25,000 a year through the Davis programme. Bates’s international page also lists the Swaniker Scholars programme.
How to apply for Bates financial aid as an international student
Bates uses its own form for international families. It does not ask international applicants for the CSS Profile, except Canadians, who complete the CSS Profile.
- Tick the aid box: say on your application that you are requesting financial aid.
- BISAFA: complete the Bates International Student Application for Financial Aid with your family’s income, assets and expenses.
- Supporting documents: add whatever income proof the form asks for, and track it in the Bates applicant portal checklist.
- If you are not asking for aid: submit a financial certification form and a bank letter showing your family can pay the full cost. Bates needs these to issue your visa documents.
Bates’s admission page sends you to Student Financial Services for aid deadlines; plan to have the BISAFA in by your admission deadline. Questions about international admission go to Joe Spir Rechani at jspir@bates.edu.
Bates admission requirements for international students: the full application
| Item | What Bates asks for |
|---|---|
| Application | Common App or Coalition Application, Powered by Scoir |
| Application fee | None (removed in September 2025) |
| Transcripts and school profile | From your secondary school; transfer applicants also send college transcripts |
| Recommendations | Letters through the application (counselor and teachers) |
| Early Decision Agreement | ED applicants only |
| SAT or ACT | Optional; self-reported scores accepted |
| English test | Only if neither your native language nor your school’s language is English |
| Interview | Encouraged through InitialView or Vericant |
| Arts supplement | Optional |
| Aid forms | BISAFA, or financial certification and bank letter if not applying for aid |
Supporting documents can arrive after the deadline, but Bates warns that in busy weeks it can take up to two weeks for them to show in your portal. Send them early so you can catch anything missing.
Testing policy
Bates has not required the SAT or ACT since 1984. You can self-report scores. Among students who sent them for the Class of 2030, the middle range was 690 to 750 in SAT Reading and Writing, 710 to 760 in SAT Math and 31 to 34 on the ACT. I would send a score only if it sits in or above those ranges.
English requirements
Bates asks for an English test only if neither your native language nor your school’s language of instruction is English. A student from Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya or India who studied in English therefore does not need one.
- Tests accepted: all versions of the TOEFL and IELTS.
- Minimum scores: Bates does not list any.
- Which result counts: your best score is used.
- How to send: officially. Bates does not accept self-reported English scores.
- Duolingo: not on the list, and the Duolingo interview does not count as a Bates interview.
With no published minimum, aim for scores that match the strength of the rest of your file. An interview through InitialView or Vericant is also a good way to show your spoken English.
Bates deadlines for fall 2027 entry
| Round | Deadline | Decision by | Reply by |
|---|---|---|---|
| Early Decision I (binding) | 15 November 2026 | 20 December 2026 | 8 January 2027 |
| Early Decision II (binding) | 10 January 2027 | 15 February 2027 | 19 February 2027 |
| Regular Decision | 10 January 2027 | 1 April 2027 | 1 May 2027 |
You can switch rounds. A Regular Decision or ED II applicant can convert to ED I by 1 December (decision by 20 December), and a Regular Decision applicant can convert to ED II by 1 February (decision by 15 February). Bates has no rolling or mid-year admission. In the last cycle, Regular Decision results came out on 14 March 2026, well before the 1 April promise.
Aid warning
If you do not request financial aid when you apply, you cannot add a request later or appeal. Decide before you submit.
How to write your Bates application essays
Bates’s application options page does not list a Bates-specific essay, so your Common App personal essay (or the Scoir equivalent) carries most of the weight. Open the Bates section of your application to see whether any optional short questions appear this year, and answer them if they do. Bates also publishes guidelines on AI use in applications; read them before you start.
- Write about how you take part: half of Bates students take community-engaged courses each year, and the college likes students who act on what they learn. A story of doing something with other people tells readers more than a list of awards.
- Use one scene: start inside a moment, then explain what it changed in you.
- Keep your own English: clear, plain sentences beat borrowed vocabulary.
- Use the interview: since the essay set is light, an InitialView or Vericant interview gives Bates a second view of you.
A sample opening, for illustration only: “The borehole in our compound broke on a Monday, and by Wednesday the queue for the neighbour’s tap reached the main road. I spent that week writing down how long each family waited, mostly because I was bored in the line. By Friday I had a timetable taped to the gate, and the queue was gone.”
What happens after you apply
- Portal: Bates sends you a link to its applicant portal, where admission and aid checklist items appear.
- Interview: book InitialView or Vericant early if you choose to interview.
- Decision: by 20 December for ED I, 15 February for ED II and 1 April for Regular Decision.
- Aid offer: admitted aid applicants receive grants and a campus job offer with the decision.
- Reply and visa: confirm by the reply date, and Bates issues the I-20 for your F-1 visa using your aid offer or your financial certification and bank letter.
Common mistakes international applicants make
- Skipping the aid request to look stronger: you can never apply for aid later at Bates. Only do this if your family can truly pay about $100,000 a year.
- Filing the CSS Profile instead of the BISAFA: unless you are Canadian, Bates wants its own form.
- Sending a Duolingo score as your English proof: Bates lists TOEFL and IELTS.
- Booking a Duolingo interview and calling it an interview: it does not count; use InitialView or Vericant.
- Ignoring Early Decision: slightly over half the class came through ED, and the aid is the same in every round. If Bates is your first choice and the numbers work, ED is worth a hard look.
- Budgeting with the US travel figure: international flights cost more than Bates’s $1,150 upper estimate.
Costs that aid does not cover
- Before you arrive: TOEFL or IELTS fees, interview fees for InitialView or Vericant, the F-1 visa fee and the SEVIS fee.
- Your family contribution: whatever the BISAFA shows your family can pay, every year.
- The work expectation: part of your package is a campus job of up to 20 hours a week; the money comes from your own hours.
- Winter clothing: Maine winters are long and cold, and a proper coat and boots are a first-month cost.
- Breaks: travel and living costs when halls close or you cannot fly home.
Majors, Short Term and life in Lewiston
Bates has about 2,000 students, a 9 to 1 student to faculty ratio, about three dozen majors and two dozen minors. Its calendar is unusual: two semesters plus a Short Term of about four weeks in May, when you take one course or work on a project of your own, often with fieldwork or travel. The Harward Center for Community Partnerships links courses to local organisations, and many of those placements turn into independent research or a senior thesis.
The college sits in Lewiston, which with neighbouring Auburn has about 60,000 people on either side of the Androscoggin River. About 30 languages are spoken in the local high schools, so international students are not the only newcomers in the area. Bates has 31 varsity teams and plays in NESCAC.
Graduate admissions at Bates
Bates is an undergraduate college, and I found no graduate degree programmes on its admission or fact pages. If you already hold a bachelor’s degree, look at graduate schools elsewhere. If you have college credit but no degree, Bates accepts transfer applicants, who send both school and college transcripts.
Bates compared with similar colleges
| College | International aid policy | Acceptance rate (latest) | Fall 2027 deadlines | 2026-27 cost |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Bates | Need-aware; full need met; grants and work, no loans | 16% (Class of 2030) | ED I 15 Nov 2026; ED II and RD 10 Jan 2027 | $94,560 combined fee |
| Colby | Need-aware; full need met; no loans | 8% (Class of 2030) | ED I 15 Nov 2026; ED II and RD 5 Jan 2027 | $97,020 to $98,270 total |
| Bowdoin | Need-blind; full need met; no loans | 6.5% (Class of 2030) | ED I 15 Nov 2026; ED II and RD 5 Jan 2027 | $97,900+ full cost |
| Middlebury | Need-aware; full need met | 17% (Class of 2030) | ED I 2 Nov 2026; ED II and RD 4 Jan 2027 | $97,386 total |
| Colgate | Need-aware; 100% of need met | 20% (Class of 2030) | ED I 1 Nov 2026; ED II and RD 15 Jan 2027 | $101,008 total |
Bowdoin is the only one of these that is need-blind for international students; Bates sits in the middle on selectivity and is free to apply to. For more US options, see our list of the best American scholarships for international students and the Amherst financial aid guide.
Who should apply to Bates
- Apply if: you want a small college where teaching is close and you do community work or research as an undergraduate, you are comfortable in a small New England city with real winters, and you need a no-loan aid package.
- Consider Early Decision if: Bates is your first choice, since over half the class comes through ED and the aid is the same.
- Look elsewhere if: you are hoping for merit scholarships, or you want graduate programmes or a big-city campus.
