Colby College Admission Requirements for International Students 2027: Acceptance Rate, Tuition, Scholarships and Deadlines
Colby is free to apply to, test-optional and asks for no supplemental essay, and it meets 100% of need with no loans. Here are the 8% acceptance rate, 2026-27 costs, English rules, aid forms and the fall 2027 deadlines.

Colby College admission requirements for international students are light on paperwork: apply free through the Common App, Coalition Application or QuestBridge, send your transcript and secondary school report, one counselor and two teacher recommendations, and an English test result (TOEFL, IELTS Academic or Duolingo) unless English is your first language or your language of instruction. SAT and ACT scores are optional, and Colby asks for no supplemental essay.

Getting in is the hard part. Colby received 21,065 applications for the Class of 2030 and admitted 8%, making it one of the most selective colleges in this group. Colby says it is need aware, and it meets 100% of demonstrated need for every admitted student, international students included, with grants and campus work rather than loans. For fall 2027 entry, Early Decision I closes on 15 November 2026 and Regular Decision on 5 January 2027. I checked the figures below on Colby’s own pages on 29 October 2026.

Colby College ranking

Colby is tied #22 among National Liberal Arts Colleges in the U.S. News 2027 edition, released on 22 September 2026, as reported by the Boston Globe. It shares that place with Smith College and the College of the Holy Cross. In the 2026 edition Colby was tied #24, so it moved up two places.

Colby College acceptance rate and class profile

Colby announced these figures for the Class of 2030 on 15 April 2026, when it sent offers of admission. They describe admitted students, not the final enrolled class.

Colby does not publish a separate acceptance rate for international applicants. Its international admission page says Colby enrols scholars from more than 80 countries, and about 11% of undergraduates are nonresidents according to the CollegeXpress profile of the college.

Colby College tuition for international students (2026-27)

These are Colby’s estimated 2026-27 costs, before aid.

Cost item (2026-27)Amount
Tuition$72,590
Food and housing$19,480
General fee$3,200
Personal expenses and books$1,700
Travel and transportation$50 to $1,300
Estimated total cost of attendance$97,020 to $98,270
Colby student health insurance (not in the total)$2,628
First-year outdoor orientation trip (COOT, not in the total)$500

Colby’s travel range is based on US and Canadian home addresses. A return flight from West Africa, East Africa or South Asia to Maine can cost well above that range, so plan for the real fare. Colby lets families pay in their own currency through Flywire, or spread payments over four months each semester.

Colby scholarships for international students: how aid works

  • Need-aware admission: Colby’s admission FAQ states that Colby is need aware. Asking for aid can be a factor in your decision.
  • 100% of need met: Colby meets the full demonstrated need of all admitted students, including international students.
  • Grants and work, no loans: packages cover need through grants and campus employment. Families may choose to borrow for their own share, but loans are not part of Colby’s award.
  • No merit scholarships: Colby does not offer scholarships for academic, athletic or other talents. Every dollar of Colby aid is need-based.
  • Outside scholarships: Colby encourages you to look for outside awards, which can lower what your family pays.

How to apply for Colby financial aid as an international student

  1. Complete the CSS Profile: Colby’s CSS code is 3280. The College Board can waive the Profile fee for students for whom it is a financial burden.
  2. Non-custodial parent: if your parents are divorced, separated or never married, the other parent completes the Non-Custodial Parent CSS Profile, or you request a Non-Custodial Parent Waiver.
  3. Wait before sending extra papers: Colby asks international families not to send additional financial documents unless Admissions or Financial Aid requests them.
  4. Meet the deadline: the CSS Profile is due 15 November 2026 for Early Decision I and 15 January 2027 for Early Decision II and Regular Decision.

Colby does not mention the ISFAA or a Certification of Finances on its international page, so the CSS Profile is the form that matters.

Testing policy

Colby is test-optional. You can self-report SAT or ACT scores in the application, and Colby superscores every exam, including the ACT. If you are admitted and you sent scores, you must provide official reports before you enrol. With a median SAT of 1510 among admits, I would only send a score at or near that level.

English requirements

Colby accepts TOEFL iBT or TOEFL Home Edition, IELTS Academic (at a test centre or online) and the Duolingo English Test. It superscores TOEFL and accepts MyBest scores. You can self-report your score on the application or email a PDF of your score report. Colby does not publish a minimum score.

How to write your Colby application without a supplement

Colby has no Colby-specific essay, so your Common App personal statement (up to 650 words) and your activities list carry the whole written part of your file.

For the personal statement, choose one experience that shows how you think. At an 8% admit rate, many strong applicants write about prizes and titles. A specific story about a problem you worked on, a responsibility at home or a question you could not let go of will stand out more.

Use the activities list carefully. Describe what you did, with numbers where you can: how many students you tutored, how much money your club raised, how many hours a week you worked in the family shop. Colby also accepts an InitialView elevator pitch and a Schoolhouse.world portfolio; both let an international applicant show spoken English and teaching ability that grades alone cannot.

A sample personal statement opening, for illustration only:

“Every Saturday from age twelve, I kept the books for my mother’s provisions stall in Onitsha market, in a school exercise book with the totals circled in red.”

From there, the writer can show what keeping those accounts taught them and why they want to study economics or mathematics.

What happens after you apply

  1. Portal and updates: send new test scores through the update form in Colby’s admissions portal or by email.
  2. Optional materials: add an extra recommendation, a video interview or an arts supplement by 22 November (ED I) or 15 January (ED II and RD).
  3. Aid review: Colby reviews your CSS Profile and asks for extra documents only if it needs them.
  4. Decision: by 15 December for ED I, 15 February for ED II and 1 April for Regular Decision.
  5. Waitlist: if you are waitlisted, Colby encourages you to email to confirm your interest.
  6. Enrol and visa: send official test scores if you reported any, then Colby issues the I-20 for your F-1 student visa interview.

Common mistakes international applicants make

  • Expecting a merit scholarship: Colby gives none. If your family cannot pay, apply for need-based aid at the start.
  • Sending piles of financial papers: Colby asks you to wait until it requests them.
  • Ignoring the non-custodial parent rule: if your parents live apart, deal with the second Profile or the waiver early.
  • Treating the personal statement as a CV: with no supplement, your essay is the only place Colby hears your voice.
  • Budgeting with Colby’s travel figure: it is built on US and Canadian addresses.
  • Assuming test-optional means test-blind: Colby reads scores you send, so a weak one can hurt.

Costs that aid does not cover

  • English test and video interview fees.
  • The CSS Profile fee if you do not qualify for the College Board waiver.
  • Visa, SEVIS and passport fees and your first flight.
  • Warm clothing. Waterville is in central Maine, and winters there are long, snowy and very cold by African or South Asian standards.

Graduate admissions at Colby

Colby is an undergraduate liberal arts college and does not offer graduate degrees. If you are looking for a master’s or PhD, you will need a university; Colby’s role is preparing you for one.

Majors and campus life at Colby

Colby has about 2,400 undergraduates and a 9:1 student-faculty ratio, according to its CollegeXpress profile, which lists 38 bachelor’s majors. The campus covers 714 acres in Waterville, a small city in central Maine about 75 miles from Portland. First-years can join the COOT outdoor orientation trips before term starts, for a $500 fee.

Colby, Smith and Davidson charge no application fee. Colby has the lowest acceptance rate of the five and is the only one with no supplemental essay. Two other Maine colleges are worth comparing: our Bowdoin College and Bates College guides.

Who should apply to Colby

Apply if you have top grades, want a small college with full-need aid and no loans, and would enjoy a rural campus with real winters. Because Colby is free to apply to and has no supplement, the cost of adding it to your list is low. The catch is the 8% admit rate, so treat it as a reach school.

It is a weaker fit if you want merit money, a city, or a graduate school on campus. I would pair Colby with need-blind colleges such as Amherst and with less selective full-need options from our list of the best American scholarships for international students.
