Middlebury College Admission Requirements for International Students 2027: Acceptance Rate, Tuition, Scholarships and Deadline

Middlebury College Admission Requirements for International Students 2027: Acceptance Rate, Tuition, Scholarships and Deadline
Middlebury is need-aware for international applicants but meets full need once you are admitted. Here are the acceptance rate, the $97,386 cost for 2026-27, the CSS Profile rules, English scores and the 2 November 2026 and 4 January 2027 deadlines.

Middlebury College admission requirements for international students are short on paper: you apply through the Common App, Coalition App or QuestBridge, send your school transcript, a counselor recommendation and two teacher recommendations, and add an English test score if English is not your first language. Middlebury asks for no supplemental essay and is test optional. Admission is need-aware for students who are not US citizens or permanent residents, but once Middlebury admits you, it meets your full demonstrated financial need.

The competition is the hard part. Middlebury admitted 1,348 of 12,540 first-year applicants for fall 2024 (about 10.7%), according to its 2024-25 Common Data Set, and it sits at No. 19 (tied) among National Liberal Arts Colleges in the U.S. News 2027 edition. For fall 2027 entry, the Early Decision I deadline is 2 November 2026 and the Early Decision II and Regular Decision deadline is 4 January 2027. Everything below was checked on Middlebury’s own admissions and financial aid pages on 29 October 2026.

TypePrivate liberal arts college; need-aware for internationals, meets full need
Acceptance rateAbout 10.7% (fall 2024, CDS); 17% for the Class of 2030
Deadline2 Nov 2026 (ED I); 4 Jan 2027 (ED II and RD)

Middlebury ranking and acceptance rate

U.S. News published its 2027 Best Colleges edition on 22 September 2026. In it, Middlebury is No. 19 (tied) among National Liberal Arts Colleges. The Boston Globe’s report on the release lists Williams at No. 1, Amherst at No. 2 and Wellesley at No. 10 in the same table, so Middlebury is in the same tier as the colleges most international applicants put on the same list.

For admission numbers, the cleanest source is the Common Data Set, a standard report US colleges fill in every year. The most recent Middlebury edition I could open is 2024-25, which covers students who started in fall 2024. Middlebury’s own news office also published figures for the Class of 2030 in April 2026.

MeasureFall 2024 entry (CDS 2024-25)Class of 2030 (Middlebury news, April 2026)
First-year applicants12,54011,458
Admitted1,3482,000 (September and February starts combined)
Acceptance rateAbout 10.7%17%
Enrolled598 (fall only)640 expected in September 2026 and 115 in February 2027
Early Decision1,341 applied, 409 admitted (CDS, read from the table order)494 enrolled from ED I and ED II
SAT middle 50% (those who submitted)1450 to 1530Not published
ACT middle 50% (those who submitted)33 to 35Not published

The two years are not measured the same way. The Class of 2030 number counts students admitted for February entry (the “Feb” class) as well as September, which is why the rate looks higher. Middlebury does not publish a separate acceptance rate for international applicants. The April 2026 announcement says the admitted class came from dozens of countries, with China, Canada, the United Kingdom, India and France sending the most.

Only 28% of enrolled first-years in fall 2024 submitted an SAT score and 18% an ACT score, which tells you how many people are admitted without one.

Middlebury tuition for international students in 2026-27

Middlebury charges the same price to every undergraduate. These are the official 2026-27 figures from Student Financial Services.

Item2026-27 amount
Tuition$72,924
Room and board (housing and meal plan)$20,920
Student activity fee$542
Books and course materials (estimate)$1,000
Transportation (estimate, varies by home)$1,000
Personal expenses (estimate)$1,000
Total cost of attendance$97,386

Health insurance is not in that total. Full-time students must have coverage, and Middlebury offers its own student plan, but the cost page does not print a price for it. A student from Lagos, Nairobi or Delhi will also spend more than $1,000 on flights over a year, so treat the transport line as a floor.

Middlebury scholarships for international students: how aid works

Middlebury gives aid on financial need only. Its financial aid pages do not mention any merit scholarship, so there is no separate award to apply for. What you get depends on what your family can pay.

  • Admission policy: need-aware for international applicants. Middlebury’s “Affording Middlebury” page says an international applicant’s financial need may be considered in the admission decision. For US students, ability to pay is not a factor.
  • Aid policy: if you are admitted, Middlebury says it will meet your full demonstrated need for all four years.
  • What a package contains: grants, a campus job (up to $2,900 a year in the offer), support for books, and a small loan. In year one the loan is capped by income: $1,000 under $50,000, $2,500 from $50,000 to $80,000 and $3,500 above $80,000. You can decline the loan, but declining it does not add grant money. The page does not say whether these income bands apply in the same way to families abroad.
  • Minimum contribution: first-year students are expected to contribute at least $2,400 a year, whatever the family income.
  • Free tuition band: Middlebury says tuition is free for families earning up to $175,000 with typical assets, starting with the first-year class entering next fall. The page does not say whether this applies to international families, so do not count on it until your own aid offer arrives.
  • How generous it is in practice: the 2024-25 Common Data Set reports that 192 non-US degree-seeking undergraduates received institutional aid, averaging $79,468 each.

Forms: CSS Profile only

International applicants must file the CSS Profile online and list Middlebury College (CSS code 3526). Middlebury does not accept the ISFAA or a paper CSS Profile. The CSS Profile charges a fee; College Board gives some students fee waivers, but Middlebury itself does not grant them.

After your CSS Profile is processed, Middlebury may ask for documents through College Board’s IDOC service. For international families that means parents’ 2025 non-US tax forms or employer earning statements, translated into English. A parent who did not file taxes and has no earning statement uses the Parent Non-filing Statement on IDOC. If your parents are divorced, separated or never married, both biological parents complete a CSS Profile.

RoundCSS Profile deadline (fall 2027 entry)
QuestBridge1 November 2026
Early Decision I15 November 2026
Posse1 December 2026
Early Decision II4 January 2027
Regular Decision1 February 2027

You must ask for aid when you apply for admission. Middlebury’s admission page says international students who want aid must apply at the same time as they apply, and the aid office warns that late applications are considered only as funding allows.

Middlebury admission requirements for international students: the application parts

  1. Application: Common App, Coalition App or QuestBridge. Middlebury has no preference.
  2. Essay: the main personal essay on your chosen platform. Middlebury states that no supplemental essay is required.
  3. Teacher recommendations: at least two.
  4. School report, counselor recommendation and transcript: sent by your counselor. International applicants should ask their school to send all transcripts, test scores and recommendations; Middlebury notes some requested items may not exist in every education system.
  5. Senior grades: ED I applicants send first-term grades as soon as possible, ED II applicants send midyear grades by 15 January, and Regular Decision applicants by 15 February. Middlebury makes no decision without senior grades.
  6. English test score if needed (see below).
  7. Optional extras: alumni interview or a 90-second Glimpse video, an InitialView or Vericant interview, and arts supplements through SlideRoom (studio art, music, theatre, dance, film).

Middlebury also asks which term you want to start: September only, February only, or either. About 100 students a year begin in February. Ticking “either” does not change your deadlines or how you are read, and a February preference does not improve your odds.

Testing policy: test optional

You do not need the SAT or ACT. If you have strong scores you can self-report them on the application or send them officially. ACT applicants may leave out the science section. Your national exams (WAEC, KCSE, CBSE, A Levels and so on) arrive through your transcript and school documents.

English requirements

You are exempt if English is your native language or if all your classes were taught in English for the last three or four years. Everyone else sends one of these. Middlebury describes the scores as recommended minimums.

TestRecommended minimum
TOEFL iBT (from 21 January 2026, new scale)5.5
TOEFL iBT (taken before 21 January 2026)105

Middlebury’s admission options page gives 5 January for Regular Decision while the application instructions page gives 4 January. Submit by 4 January and the difference will not affect you. Interview requests close on 8 November (ED I), 9 January (ED II) and 16 January (Regular Decision). Early Decision is binding: you sign a commitment statement and withdraw your other applications if admitted.

Deadline

Early Decision I closes on 2 November 2026 and the CSS Profile for that round is due 15 November 2026. If you need aid, there is no way to add it after you have been admitted.

How to write for Middlebury when there is no supplement

Because Middlebury drops the supplemental essay, your Common App personal essay and your recommendations carry more weight than they would at a college with three extra prompts. That changes how you should spend your time.

  • Write the personal essay about one specific thing. Middlebury readers see thousands of essays about overcoming difficulty in general. A narrow story (a market stall you ran, a language you taught yourself, a science fair result that went wrong) gives them something to remember.
  • Use the Additional Information box sparingly. It is for context: a school that grades differently, a gap year, a family responsibility. It is not a second essay.
  • Request the alumni interview or record the Glimpse video. These are the only places you can speak to Middlebury directly. Middlebury’s own strengths are environmental studies, international studies and languages, so if any of those is part of your plan, say so in the interview with a concrete example.
  • Brief your teachers. Two teacher letters are required. Give each teacher a short list of what you did in their class so they can write with detail.

Here is a short opening for a personal essay, written for illustration only. Do not copy it.

“For three years I translated my grandmother’s radio programme from Hausa into English for her younger listeners in the diaspora, which is how I learned that a joke can survive a translation even when the grammar does not.”

The opening works because it names a real activity, a place in the writer’s life and something the writer learned, all in one sentence. Everything after it should stay in that same concrete register.

What happens after you apply

  1. Portal access: Middlebury gives you an applicant portal. Upload missing documents there, never by email. Do not send financial documents or copies of certificates to admissions.
  2. Aid documents: the Applicant Dashboard shows any IDOC items still missing. Respond quickly; your aid offer cannot be finished without them.
  3. Senior grades: send them by the dates above. No decision is made without them.
  4. Decision: mid-December for ED I, mid-February for ED II and late March for Regular Decision. Admitted students who applied for aid receive an aid offer, which is subject to verification.
  5. Enrolment and visa: after you confirm, Middlebury issues the I-20 you need for the F-1 student visa interview at a US embassy or consulate.

Common mistakes international applicants make

  • Applying without asking for aid and hoping to ask later. Middlebury expects aid applicants to apply at the same time as admission.
  • Filing the ISFAA. Middlebury accepts only the online CSS Profile.
  • Self-translating tax documents. Use translated official documents or a signed employer earning statement in English.
  • Missing the senior grade deadlines. ED II and Regular Decision applicants must send midyear grades by 15 January and 15 February.
  • Sending an SAT score that hurts you. The test is optional. If your score is far below the 1450 to 1530 range of those who submitted, leave it off.
  • Choosing Early Decision without being sure. ED is binding, and your family must accept the aid offer Middlebury makes.

Costs that aid does not cover

  • Getting there: flights to the US and onward travel to Vermont, and the US visa application and SEVIS fees (check current amounts on your local US embassy website).
  • Winter clothing: Vermont winters are long and cold, and a first winter coat and boots are a real expense for students from warm countries.
  • Health insurance: required for full-time students and not included in the $97,386 cost of attendance.
  • The minimum student contribution: at least $2,400 a year, which most students meet through campus work.
  • Breaks: Middlebury’s cost figures do not include living costs during winter or summer breaks if you stay in the US.

Middlebury graduate admissions in brief

Middlebury College itself is an undergraduate college. Graduate study runs through separate schools that admit separately: the Middlebury Institute of International Studies at Monterey in California, the Bread Loaf School of English, and the Middlebury Language Schools, which teach 12 languages in summer programmes. Each has its own application, deadlines and funding rules, so none of the undergraduate rules above apply to them.

Majors, campus and the town of Middlebury

Middlebury was founded in 1800 and has about 2,600 undergraduates. It offers more than 45 majors and over 850 courses, with a 9:1 student-faculty ratio and an average class size of 16. The college describes itself as nationally known for environmental studies and international studies, and its language teaching is unusually deep for a college this size. Its C.V. Starr Schools Abroad run programmes in 16 countries and 36 cities.

The campus sits in the Champlain Valley of central Vermont, between the Green Mountains and the Adirondacks. Middlebury is a small Vermont town, so campus is the centre of social life. The college has 31 NCAA varsity teams, about 28% of students play a varsity sport, and it is a charter member of the NESCAC athletic conference.

Who should apply to Middlebury

Apply if you want a small residential college where professors teach every class, if languages, environmental science or international affairs are part of your plans, and if a rural campus with real winters does not put you off. Middlebury also suits strong students without test scores, since most of its admitted class did not rely on them.

Think hard if you need a big city, a large graduate research university or a merit scholarship. Middlebury has no merit awards, and because admission is need-aware, a high aid request makes the decision harder. If you need full funding, apply Regular Decision unless Middlebury is clearly your first choice and your family is ready to accept whatever aid offer it makes.
