UC Santa Barbara Admission Requirements for International Students 2027: Acceptance Rate, Tuition, Scholarships and Deadline

UC Santa Barbara Admission Requirements for International Students 2027: Acceptance Rate, Tuition, Scholarships and Deadline
UC Santa Barbara admission requirements for international students: UC application with four PIQs, no SAT or ACT, IELTS 6.5 or TOEFL 80 (4.5), an admit rate near 44% (about 63% for international applicants), $90,216 nonresident cost for 2026-27 and a 30 November 2026 deadline.

UC Santa Barbara admission requirements for international students are those of the University of California: one UC application, four Personal Insight Questions, self-reported grades, an English proficiency score if your schooling was not in English, and a $95 application fee. UCSB does not use SAT or ACT scores in admission or scholarship decisions. For fall 2027 entry the application must be in between 1 October and 30 November 2026.

International applicants have had good odds at UCSB lately. Preliminary UC data shows an overall admit rate of about 44.0% for fall 2026 and about 63.2% for international applicants, up from 48.1% a year earlier. The catch is cost: a nonresident first-year in a residence hall has a 2026-27 budget of $90,216, and UCSB’s main merit award, the Regents Scholarship, is not open to international students. I verified the figures on UCSB and University of California pages on 29 October 2026.

UC Santa Barbara acceptance rate and class profile

The UC Office of the President (UCOP) publishes preliminary admissions tables each summer. UCSB’s fall 2026 figures are below.

MeasureFall 2026 (preliminary)
Total first-year admits47,716
California residents admitted25,289
Other US states admitted10,403
International students admitted12,024
International share of applicants18%
Overall admit rateAbout 44.0%
International admit rateAbout 63.2%

That is a sharp rise from fall 2025, when UCSB’s overall admit rate was about 38.3% and its international rate about 48.1%. International admits rose by about a third in one year. Nobody can promise the same for fall 2027, but it shows UCSB actively wants students from abroad.

I could not open UCSB’s official 2025-26 Common Data Set or the UC campus admit-data page for UCSB, so the rates above come from UCOP’s preliminary tables and College Kickstart’s summary of that data.

UC Santa Barbara tuition for international students in 2026-27

UCSB’s financial aid office publishes a sample 2026-27 budget for a new first-year student living in the residence halls.

Total$90,216$50,946

Tuition paid by nonresidents is $56,943 when you add the three tuition and fee lines. UC campuses may also charge international students a small extra fee; UC Davis, for example, lists a $414 international student administrative fee, so ask UCSB whether one applies.

UC Santa Barbara scholarships for international students

UCSB’s international student office lists the support open to international undergraduates, and it is limited.

  • Need-based aid: UCSB lists none for new international students. No FAFSA, CSS Profile or UCSB aid form applies to you.
  • Regents Scholarship: $5,000 a year for up to four years for the top 2% of admitted freshmen, but only for US citizens, permanent residents and AB 130/131 students. International students are not eligible.
  • International Student Award: for current F-1 or J-1 students enrolled full-time who face economic hardship during their studies. Awards depend on need and the number of applicants. You apply through UCSB Global once you are a student.
  • ScholarshipUniverse: UCSB’s scholarship database matches enrolled students to campus and outside awards.
  • Strauss Scholarship: the international office also points to this award for students committed to public service; check its eligibility rules.

So for your first year, UCSB offers essentially no money to international students. Plan to cover the full $90,216 from family funds, a government sponsor or an outside scholarship. Our guides to scholarships for African students and US scholarships for international students list options worth checking first.

UC Santa Barbara admission requirements for international students: the application parts

  1. UC application: one form for every UC campus. Select UC Santa Barbara and your major.
  2. Personal and visa details: citizenship, and visa type if you are not a US citizen.
  3. Self-reported coursework: all courses and grades from secondary school, entered by you.
  4. Activities and awards.
  5. Personal Insight Questions: four of eight, up to 350 words each.
  6. English proficiency: one of the approved tests or options below.
  7. Fee: $95 per campus for international students ($80 for US applicants).

There is no SAT or ACT requirement and no interview. UCSB’s application page does not ask for recommendation letters.

Academic standard

UC campuses read international transcripts against your own system. Complete secondary school at a level that would admit you to a strong university at home. UCSB’s international applicant pages also set curriculum requirements by country; check the page for your system (A-Level, IB, WAEC and others) before you apply.

Testing policy

UCSB does not consider SAT or ACT scores for admission or scholarships. If you enrol, scores may be used for course placement, and you can report them only after submitting your application.

English requirements

UCSB publishes its English minimums for first-year international applicants. Meet any one of them.

Test or optionMinimum
TOEFL iBT or Home Edition80 (taken before January 2026) or 4.5 (January 2026 onward)
IELTS6.5
Duolingo English Test115
ACT English Language Arts24
SAT Writing and Language (older SAT)31
AP English Language or Literature3, 4 or 5
IB English ASL 6 or 7; HL 5, 6 or 7

Rules worth knowing:

  • Take the test by the December test date before you enrol.
  • Have scores sent directly from the testing agency to UCSB.
  • TOEFL, IELTS and Duolingo scores are valid for two years and must still be valid in July before enrolment.
  • MyBest TOEFL, IELTS One Skill Retake and the digital SAT Reading and Writing score are not accepted.
  • Allow two to three weeks for scores to appear in your applicant portal.

UC also notes that Santa Barbara may strongly recommend or require further English testing for admitted students.

How to apply to UC Santa Barbara, step by step

  1. Start the UC application and add UC Santa Barbara.
  2. Choose your college and major. UCSB admits into the College of Letters and Science, the College of Engineering and the College of Creative Studies.
  3. Enter your coursework carefully from your school records.
  4. Add activities and awards.
  5. Write four Personal Insight Questions.
  6. Report your English test and arrange for the official score to reach UCSB.
  7. Pay $95 and submit by 30 November 2026.
  8. Watch your UCSB applicant portal for messages and score updates.

How to write the UC Santa Barbara Personal Insight Questions, with a sample opening

You answer four of the eight UC questions, up to 350 words each. UCSB readers, like all UC readers, want direct, factual answers about what you did and why it mattered.

  • Lead with action. Start with what you did, not a quote or a dictionary definition.
  • Use numbers. “We raised enough to buy 60 textbooks” is stronger than “we helped many students”.
  • Explain your setting. Tell the reader what your school, town or exam system was like in one or two sentences.
  • Match UCSB’s strengths. If you are applying for physics, marine science or engineering, let one answer show your interest in action.

Sample opening for the “significant challenge” question (for illustration only):

“In my final year, the road to my school flooded for six weeks. I moved in with my aunt across the river and studied by torchlight, and I still sat every mock exam.”

The rest of the answer would explain what you changed, what it cost you and what you learned about yourself.

What happens after you apply

  1. Portal access: UCSB sends instructions for its applicant portal.
  2. English scores: make sure the official score has arrived.
  3. Decision in March 2027: admit, waitlist or deny.
  4. Accept by 1 May 2027 with the Statement of Intent to Register.
  5. Final transcripts and exam results as UCSB instructs. Grades must match what you reported.
  6. Financial documents and I-20: prove you can pay the full cost.
  7. F-1 visa interview and travel to Santa Barbara for orientation.

Common mistakes international applicants make

  • Taking the English test too late. UCSB wants it by the December test date.
  • Sending a MyBest TOEFL or IELTS One Skill Retake score. Neither is accepted.
  • Counting on the Regents Scholarship. It is closed to international students.
  • Writing PIQs like a speech. Readers want specific facts.
  • Underestimating housing. Santa Barbara is one of the more expensive places to live in California.

Costs that aid does not cover

  • Flights to Santa Barbara, often through Los Angeles, plus the bus or shuttle.
  • The F-1 visa fee and SEVIS I-901 fee.
  • A possible international student fee not shown in the printed budget.
  • Rent after your first year if you move off campus.
  • A bicycle; much of campus life runs on bikes.
  • Higher campus fees and housing costs each year.

UC Santa Barbara graduate admissions for international students

Graduate admission is handled by UCSB’s Graduate Division and each department, with separate deadlines and fees. International graduate applicants generally need TOEFL or IELTS scores unless their degree was taught in English. PhD students are often funded with fellowships and teaching or research assistantships. UCSB’s international student office notes that awards such as Knight-Hennessy, Yenching and Gates Cambridge are graduate-level options for its graduates.

Majors, campus and city

UCSB offers majors through the College of Letters and Science, the College of Engineering and the small College of Creative Studies, which is built for self-directed students. It is known for physics, materials science, environmental and marine science, and engineering.

The campus sits on the Pacific coast beside Goleta and the student community of Isla Vista, a short drive from downtown Santa Barbara. Much of student life happens outdoors, a few minutes from the beach. The setting is beautiful, but housing is tight and expensive.
