Vanderbilt University Admission Requirements for International Students 2027: Acceptance Rate, Tuition, Scholarships and Deadlines

Vanderbilt University Admission Requirements for International Students 2027: Acceptance Rate, Tuition, Scholarships and Deadlines
International students can win Vanderbilt’s full-tuition Ingram, Cornelius Vanderbilt and Chancellor’s scholarships, and a limited number get need-based aid. Here are 2026-27 costs ($99,994), test and English rules, essays and fall 2027 deadlines.

Vanderbilt University admission requirements for international students follow the same holistic review as for American applicants: a Common App or Coalition application with Vanderbilt’s supplemental essay, transcripts, school recommendations and, if English is not your first language or school language, an English test score. SAT and ACT scores are optional for fall 2027 entry but will be required from fall 2029. Admission is very selective: for the Class of 2029, Vanderbilt admitted about 13% of Early Decision applicants and under 4% in Regular Decision.

For fall 2027, Early Decision I closes on 1 November 2026, and Early Decision II and Regular Decision both close on 1 January 2027. The 2026-27 cost of attendance is $99,994 before travel and health insurance. International students can win Vanderbilt’s full-tuition merit scholarships, and a limited number receive need-based aid under a need-aware policy. This guide covers the acceptance rate, Vanderbilt tuition for international students, scholarships, essays and deadlines.

Vanderbilt acceptance rate and class profile

Vanderbilt does not put a single headline admit rate on its admissions pages; the full numbers are in its Common Data Set. Student newspaper reporting on recent classes gives a clear picture:

Early Decision admits a much larger share of applicants than Regular Decision. That gap matters for international students too, but ED is binding, so you must be sure the aid offer will work for your family before you commit. Check Vanderbilt’s Common Data Set for the latest overall rate before you build your list.

Vanderbilt scholarships for international students

Full-tuition merit scholarships

Vanderbilt is one of the few top-20 US universities where international students can compete for large merit awards. Its three signature scholarships are:

ScholarshipValueApplication
Cornelius Vanderbilt ScholarshipFull tuition plus summer stipend for study abroad, research or serviceSeparate scholarship application required
Ingram Scholars ProgramFull tuition plus summer stipend; focused on service and civic leadershipScholarship application strongly encouraged
Chancellor’s ScholarshipFull tuitionScholarship application strongly encouraged

More than 225 students hold these full-tuition awards. They renew for four years with good academic standing and do not depend on financial need. Apply through MyAppVU after you submit your admission application. The scholarship deadline is 1 December 2026 for every admission plan, including Regular Decision. Vanderbilt reviews merit candidates in February and March and usually sends offers in late March.

Full tuition still leaves about $30,000 a year for housing, food, fees and personal costs, so a merit award alone may not be enough for many families.

Need-based aid (Opportunity Vanderbilt)

  • Need-aware for international citizens. Vanderbilt says requesting aid, and the amount, may affect the admission decision.
  • Limited places. Need-based aid goes to a limited number of international first-years. It is renewable.
  • Full need, no loans (general policy). Opportunity Vanderbilt aims to meet 100% of demonstrated need with grants, scholarships and an expected student work contribution, without loans. Vanderbilt plans about $70.5 million in scholarships for 2026-27 first-year students, and 64% of undergraduates receive some aid.
  • No aid request means full payment. Applicants who do not seek need-based aid must cover all four years themselves or through a sponsor.

Forms and aid deadlines

  1. Ask for aid on your application: answer the aid question in your Common App.
  2. CSS Profile: this is the only aid document required at submission. Vanderbilt may ask for more to verify it.
  3. Priority deadlines: 1 November 2026 for ED I, 1 January 2027 for ED II and 1 February 2027 for RD on the admissions page. The international aid page lists 5 November, 2 January and 3 February. File by the earlier date to be safe.
  4. Merit application: submit through MyAppVU by 1 December 2026.

Testing and English requirements

SAT and ACT scores are optional for fall 2027 applicants. Vanderbilt has announced that test scores will be required for fall 2029 entry, so younger siblings should plan for that. If you do send a score, Vanderbilt suggests taking the SAT by 3 October 2026 or the ACT by 17 October 2026 for ED I, and by early December for ED II and RD.

International applicants whose first language or school language is not English send an English proficiency score. Vanderbilt accepts the TOEFL, IELTS and Duolingo English Test, among others, and does not publish a minimum score. Vanderbilt’s guidance has also allowed a waiver for applicants with a high ACT English score (above 26) or SAT Evidence-Based Reading and Writing score (above 630). Confirm the current waiver rule on the international applicant page before you skip a test.

What goes into the Vanderbilt application

  • Common App or Coalition with Scoir application and personal essay
  • Vanderbilt supplemental essay
  • Secondary school transcript and school report, translated into English where needed
  • Counselor and teacher recommendations as listed in the application
  • English proficiency score if required; SAT or ACT optional
  • CSS Profile if you want need-based aid
  • MyAppVU merit scholarship application if you want merit consideration
  • Blair School of Music applicants: a separate Blair application with a pre-screening video, with a priority deadline of 1 November 2026 (ED I) or 1 December 2026 (ED II and RD)

Vanderbilt supplemental essay

Vanderbilt asks for one short supplemental essay on the Common App. In recent cycles applicants chose one of two prompts: one about an activity or experience that shaped them, and one about community or learning from different points of view. Check the exact 2026-27 wording and word limit in the Common App before you draft.

How to write it

Whichever prompt you pick, tell one story in detail rather than summarising your CV. Describe a moment, what you did, and what changed in how you think or act. Vanderbilt’s motto, “Crescere aude” (dare to grow), is a useful test: does your essay show growth?

If you apply for the Cornelius Vanderbilt, Ingram or Chancellor’s scholarships, the MyAppVU essays matter as much as the admission essay. Ingram readers want evidence of service that solved a real problem. Show what changed because of your work.

Sample opening (for illustration only): “The borehole in our village in Kano broke in March, and for three weeks the queue at the next one started at 5 a.m. I spent my mornings in that queue with a notebook, counting buckets, and by April I had a plan the ward councillor actually read.”

Majors and academic strengths

Vanderbilt undergraduates enter one of its schools: the College of Arts and Science, the School of Engineering, Peabody College of Education and Human Development, the Blair School of Music, or the newer College of Connected Computing. Peabody is highly regarded for education and human development. Economics, neuroscience, medicine, health and society, and engineering are popular with international students, and the Vanderbilt University Medical Center next to campus offers research openings for pre-medical students.

Campus and city life

The campus sits close to downtown Nashville and is a designated national arboretum, with large lawns and mature trees. Nashville is known for music and has a growing health care and technology job market. Summers are hot and winters mild compared with the northern US. First-years live together in The Commons, which helps international students settle quickly.

Graduate admissions in brief

Each graduate and professional school runs its own admissions: the Graduate School for PhD and research master’s programmes, plus Owen (business), the Law School, the School of Medicine, Peabody, the Divinity School and Nursing. English requirements and deadlines differ by programme. PhD students are normally funded; professional master’s students usually pay tuition with partial scholarships. Check each programme page.

What happens after you apply

  1. Portal: Vanderbilt sends login details for its applicant portal, where you track missing documents.
  2. Merit application: submit it in MyAppVU by 1 December 2026.
  3. Decision: mid-December (ED I), mid-February (ED II) or late March (RD).
  4. Aid and merit offers: preliminary aid offers come with ED decisions; merit offers usually arrive in late March.
  5. I-20 and visa: after you enrol, Vanderbilt issues the I-20 once your funding is documented. Pay the SEVIS fee and book an F-1 visa interview.

Common mistakes international applicants make

  • Missing the 1 December merit deadline because the admission deadline is in January.
  • Assuming a full-tuition award covers everything; housing and food are about $24,000 more.
  • Applying ED without being sure the family can pay if aid is limited.
  • Writing a supplemental essay that lists activities instead of telling one story.
  • Taking an English test later than the application deadline.
  • Forgetting that testing becomes required for fall 2029 entry if you plan a gap year or later application.

Costs aid may not cover

  • Health insurance if your aid offer does not include it
  • Flights to and from Nashville
  • F-1 visa and SEVIS fees
  • Application costs: English tests, CSS Profile fees, score sending
  • Exchange-rate losses on family contributions
  • Housing and food if you hold only a full-tuition merit award

Who should apply

Vanderbilt is a strong choice for high achievers with a record of leadership or service, because its merit scholarships are open to international students. If you have top grades and can show real impact in your community, apply and put serious work into the scholarship essays.

If your family needs full need-based aid and you are not a likely merit winner, Vanderbilt is a reach in two ways: the admit rate and the limited number of international aid places. Balance it with need-blind colleges.
