Sorbonne University Abu Dhabi (SUAD) is hiring a Lecturer in Mathematics. The post is permanent and full time. Most of the teaching is undergraduate mathematics in the Foundation Year, and the job is based on the Zayed Military University (ZMU) campus in Abu Dhabi, where SUAD teaches degree programmes for military cadets. The advert asks for a master’s degree, with a PhD preferred, plus mathematics teaching experience at senior secondary level and professional English. No salary is stated. Applications close on 4 November 2026.
That short deadline is the first thing to plan around. The second is that this job is unusual for a lecturer post: it values school-level teaching experience, and the setting is a military university campus, not SUAD’s main site on Al Reem Island. Below I explain the Sorbonne University Abu Dhabi Lecturer in Mathematics job, the requirements, how to apply through the THE form and how to write the teaching statement it asks for.

About Sorbonne University Abu Dhabi and the ZMU programme
SUAD was set up on 30 May 2006 through a partnership between Sorbonne University in Paris and the Government of Abu Dhabi. It began as Paris-Sorbonne University Abu Dhabi and took its current name after the 2018 merger that created Sorbonne Université in Paris. Its main campus is on Al Reem Island. SUAD’s own site gives about 1,800 students and three schools: Arts and Humanities; Data, Science and Engineering; and Law, Economics and Business. Degrees are awarded by Sorbonne Université and Université Paris Cité, and teaching is in French and English depending on the programme.
The ZMU link is recent. In October 2023 ZMU signed an agreement with Khalifa University, SUAD and Rabdan Academy, with SUAD chosen by the Ministry of Defence as one of three academic partners. SUAD’s page on the partnership says:
- The first ZMU programme, a Bachelor in Economics and Management, began on 12 January 2026 with 33 cadets, starting with the Foundation Year.
- A Bachelor in Geography and Planning starts in September 2026, and a Bachelor in History with a concentration in International Relations is planned for September 2027.
- The programmes run for four years. The first year is a Foundation Year covering languages, mathematics and general education.
- The ZMU programmes are taught in English.
So the job is mainly teaching first-year mathematics to cadets heading into economics, geography and similar degrees. That explains why the advert values senior secondary teaching experience: much of the content bridges school and university maths.
What the job involves
The advert groups the duties into three areas:
- Teaching: design and deliver undergraduate mathematics courses, mainly in the Foundation Year, and develop materials, assessments and learning activities that build critical thinking and independent learning.
- Student support: give academic guidance and mentoring, and help students build analytical skills.
- Service: take part in departmental and university service, and contribute to programme development, curriculum review and academic governance where appropriate.
There is no research requirement in the advert. This is a teaching post.
Requirements: essential and desirable
| Essential | Desirable |
|---|---|
| Master’s degree, PhD preferred, in mathematics, engineering or a relevant field from an accredited institution | Teaching experience in higher education |
| Mathematics teaching experience at senior secondary or high school level | IELTS or an equivalent English qualification |
| Professional proficiency in English (mandatory) | Knowledge of Arabic and/or French |
| Commitment to effective, student-centred teaching | Advanced teaching skills and experience with educational technology and online learning platforms |
| Readiness to supervise and mentor students | |
| Strong communication, interpersonal and teamwork skills | |
| Ability to work in a multicultural academic environment |
A master’s holder who has taught A-level, IB, WAEC senior secondary or similar mathematics for several years meets the core of this list. A PhD is preferred, not required. French or Arabic is a plus, which makes sense at a French university in the UAE.
Salary, benefits and tax
The advert gives no salary and no benefits. SUAD’s employer page on THE also lists no pay details. Gulf university packages often include housing, flights and schooling, but I could not confirm what SUAD offers for this post, so ask before you accept. One general point: the UAE does not levy personal income tax on salaries, so compare offers on the gross figure.
Visa sponsorship
The advert says nothing about visas. Employers in the UAE normally arrange the residence visa and work permit for staff they hire from abroad. Confirm with SUAD’s HR that this applies to this post, and ask whether any security clearance applies, because the workplace is a military university campus.
How to apply for the SUAD Lecturer in Mathematics job
The application goes through the THE Unijobs online form. You need:
- A cover letter: your expertise and how it fits SUAD’s vision.
- A detailed CV.
- A personal statement on teaching: your teaching experience, style and philosophy, and your approach to teaching mathematics.
- Recent teaching evaluations: if you have them.
- Three professional references: with email and phone for each, including at least one person who can speak about the quality of your teaching.
The form accepts .doc, .docx, .pdf and .rtf files of up to 1MB each. A cover message is required, and other supporting documents are optional. Compress scanned evaluations before you upload them.
Deadline
The advert closes on 4 November 2026. Upload limits are 1MB per file, so prepare compressed PDFs in advance.
How to write the teaching statement
This statement is where the decision is made, because the job is all teaching. One to two pages is enough. A structure that works:
- Who you teach best: describe the students you have taught (age, level, class size) and what they found hard in mathematics.
- How you teach: your approach, for example worked examples followed by guided practice, frequent low-stakes quizzes, or problems drawn from economics and geography.
- Bridging school and university: how you move students from procedural school maths to the reasoning first-year university courses expect. This fits the Foundation Year directly.
- Assessment and feedback: how you check understanding and act on the results.
- Technology: tools you use (learning platforms, graphing software, online homework). This covers one of the desirable criteria.
- Multicultural classrooms: how you teach students learning in their second language.
Sample opening line, for illustration only: “For eight years I have taught senior secondary mathematics to students who often see the subject as a barrier, and my aim in every class is to show them it is a tool they can use.”
Your cover letter should be shorter and show that you have read about SUAD and its ZMU programmes. Mention the Foundation Year and the degree subjects the cadets go on to study.
What the selection process looks like
SUAD has not published its process. For teaching posts in UAE universities, the usual steps are CV screening, an online interview, often a short teaching demonstration, reference checks and then an offer. Visa processing can take some weeks after that.
Common mistakes
- Missing the teaching evidence: evaluations and a referee who can speak about your teaching carry weight.
- Oversized uploads: files over 1MB will not upload.
- A research-heavy CV: put teaching history, levels and subjects first.
- Ignoring the setting: show you understand you would teach Foundation Year cadets on the ZMU campus.
- Assuming the package: no salary or benefits are stated, so ask before accepting.
- Leaving it late: the advert closes on 4 November 2026.
Who should apply and who shouldn’t
You should apply if you have a master’s or PhD in mathematics or a close field, solid secondary or first-year university maths teaching experience, and professional English. Teachers in Nigeria, Ghana, India, the Philippines, the UK and elsewhere who have taught senior secondary maths and hold a master’s degree are the profile this advert describes. French or Arabic is a bonus.
You probably shouldn’t apply if you want a research career, if you have no teaching record, or if you are not comfortable working on site every day at a military university campus. If you want to study in the UAE instead, our guide to UAE scholarships covers the main funded routes, and the Khalifa University scholarship is another option in Abu Dhabi.
