ESUT Cut-Off Mark for Chemical Engineering 2027/2028: Requirements, Subject Combination and Screening

ESUT’s minimum UTME score for Chemical Engineering in 2027/2028 is 160, and no merit score is published. See the safe target, JAMB subjects, ESUT’s O’level and DE remarks, the no-test screening, CAPS steps and COREN status.

The ESUT cut off mark for Chemical Engineering for 2026/2027 is 160 in the 2026 UTME. Enugu State University of Science and Technology did not name Chemical Engineering in the score bands of its official Post-UTME advert of 4 July 2026, so the general 160 line for “other courses” applies. ESUT did not set 160 for Chemical Engineering by name; it simply left the course in the general group.

2027/2028 update: ESUT cut-off marks usually stay the same from one year to the next, so the figures on this page are what 2027/2028 candidates should plan with. They come from the latest official notice (2026/2027). If the 2027/2028 notice changes anything, we will update this page.

160 is the score that lets you apply. The score that actually wins a Chemical Engineering place is higher, and ESUT does not publish it. This guide covers the official figures and their history, a safe target (my advice), the JAMB subjects and ESUT’s own brochure remarks, the online screening with a worked example, CAPS steps, and what COREN’s last visit report says about the programme.

The minimum UTME score (160) is a gate set before screening. The merit score is the lowest UTME score ESUT actually admits into Chemical Engineering after ranking everyone who applied, and ESUT keeps it internal. For any engineering course, expect the merit score to sit well above the gate.

Chemical Engineering cut-off history at ESUT

SessionFigureWhat it isStatus
2026/2027160Minimum UTME to apply (general line; course not named)Official ESUT advert
2025/2026180Minimum UTME to apply (“Engineering” listed as a group)Previous year, from a blog summary of ESUT’s notice

On paper the minimum fell by 20 marks. In 2025/2026 a blog summary of ESUT’s notice put all of Engineering at 180. For 2026/2027 ESUT’s own advert named only Civil and Electrical/Electronic Engineering at 180 and Software Engineering at 200, which leaves Chemical Engineering at 160. The 2025/2026 summary may have simplified the list, so I would not read the change as a sign that the course got easier.

Some blogs quote much higher “cut-offs” for ESUT courses with no ESUT document behind them. I found none for Chemical Engineering that I could trace to the university, so treat any such figure as unofficial. Minimums can change every year; read the new advert when it comes out.

Safe target score for Chemical Engineering at ESUT (my advice)

This section is my advice, not an ESUT rule. Chemical Engineering draws fewer applicants than Electrical or Computer Engineering at most Nigerian universities, but every engineering seat at a state university is contested by candidates who scored well above the minimum. A score just over 160 is unlikely to be enough.

Your 2026 UTME scoreMy read for ESUT Chemical Engineering
160 to 184Eligible for screening. Admission is unlikely; list a backup course.
185 to 204Possible if your O’level Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry are strong.
205 to 224A fair chance.
225 and aboveA good chance. This is the range I would aim for.

For a 2027 attempt, my safe target for ESUT Chemical Engineering is 220 or more, backed by at least B grades in Chemistry and Mathematics. Chemistry carries more of this course than of any other engineering degree, so our JAMB Chemistry syllabus guide is a sensible place to start your revision.

Catchment and state of origin

ESUT does not publish a catchment list. It is an Enugu State Government university, so Enugu indigenes are its primary catchment, but it admits candidates from every state. The federal 45/35/20 split of merit, catchment and ELDS places has not been stated as ESUT policy, so do not plan around it.

JAMB subject combination and O’level requirements for ESUT Chemical Engineering

RequirementChemical Engineering
UTME subjectsUse of English, Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry
O’levelFive credits including English Language, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and any other science subject
ESUT O’level remarkESUT accepts an O’level credit pass in English Language
SittingsNot stated in ESUT’s advert. Two sittings is the common ceiling
Direct Entry (general)A’level passes in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics
Direct Entry (ESUT remark)Any two of Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics at A’level; ESUT also accepts NCE, ND, HND or a first degree with good grades plus UTME requirements into 200 or 300 level
Special requirementsNone published by ESUT

These come from the JAMB brochure entry for Chemical Engineering (Myschool reprint, checked 29 October 2026), including the remarks it carries for ESUT. There is no choice of fourth subject: Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry are all compulsory. Biology cannot replace any of them, which catches out candidates who registered the medical combination and then changed their mind.

The ESUT Direct Entry remark is unusually generous. If you hold an ND or HND in a related field, ask the faculty which level you would enter at before you register for DE, because the brochure only says “200 or 300 level respectively”.

How ESUT screening works for Chemical Engineering

ESUT ran its 2026/2027 screening on these terms, taken from the official advert.

Is there an aggregate score?

ESUT has not published an aggregate formula. The 2026/2027 advert sets a minimum UTME score per course and an online screening with no test, and it says nothing about weights or O’level grade points. So the only arithmetic you can do with official figures is to check how far you are above your course’s minimum. Some blogs quote a Post-UTME percentage for ESUT; that cannot be right for 2026/2027, because there was no Post-UTME test to score.

Worked example for a Chemical Engineering candidate

Take Chidera, who scored 214 in the 2026 UTME and has A1 in Mathematics, B2 in Chemistry, B3 in Physics, B3 in English and C4 in Biology.

  1. Eligibility check (official): 214 minus the 160 minimum = 54 marks above the line.
  2. UTME half (illustrative method): 214 ÷ 8 = 26.75 out of 50.
  3. O’level half (illustrative method): 10 + 9 + 8 + 8 + 7 = 42 out of 50.
  4. Illustrative total: 26.75 + 42 = 68.75 out of 100.

Now compare Somto, who scored 226 with B3, C4, C4, C5 and C6. His illustrative total is 28.25 + 31 = 59.25. On UTME alone he leads Chidera by 12 marks; on a combined method he trails by more than 9 points. ESUT has not said which approach it uses, so the safe plan is a strong UTME and clean O’level grades together.

To see why your O’level grades can still matter, here is a method some other Nigerian universities use: half the aggregate from the UTME (your score divided by 8, out of 50) and half from five O’level subjects (A1 = 10, B2 = 9, B3 = 8, C4 = 7, C5 = 6, C6 = 5, out of 50). ESUT has not published this or any other formula. I use it only to compare two candidates, never to predict an ESUT cut-off.

How to apply for Chemical Engineering at ESUT, step by step

  1. Get your JAMB profile code: text NIN, a space and your 11-digit NIN (for example NIN 12345678901) to 55019 or 66019 from the phone number linked to your NIN. JAMB replies with the profile code you need to buy the UTME form.
  2. Register the UTME with the right subjects: pick Use of English, Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry and choose ESUT and Chemical Engineering. ESUT’s 2026 advert also let candidates who chose another school apply after a JAMB change of institution, but choosing ESUT from the start saves you that step and its cost.
  3. Upload your O’level to CAPS: once your WAEC, NECO or NABTEB result is out, have it uploaded to your JAMB profile at an accredited CBT centre or JAMB office. ESUT’s advert makes this compulsory for every candidate, and a result that is missing on CAPS can hold your admission back even after ESUT picks you.
  4. Open the ESUT screening form: go to portal.esut.edu.ng, select the session, and under Regular Students open the Admission Screening Registration for that session (Direct Entry has its own form). Enter your JAMB registration number and fill the details form to generate an invoice.
  5. Pay ₦2,000: pay at a commercial bank through Enugu State IGR Pay Direct with the printed invoice and its reference number, or pay online with a debit card.
  6. Finish and print: return to the portal, re-enter your JAMB registration number, complete the form, confirm and submit, then print the acknowledgement slip. ESUT warns that false information leads to disqualification.
  7. Check and accept on CAPS: log in at efacility.jamb.gov.ng, choose Check Admission Status, then Access my CAPS and Admission Status. If ESUT has offered you Chemical Engineering, accept it, then print your JAMB admission letter.
  8. Pay the acceptance fee on the ESUT portal: blogs report ESUT’s acceptance fee at about ₦26,000 (₦26,100 in some reports). ESUT’s 2026/2027 notices I checked do not state it, so confirm the amount on the portal before you pay, and keep the receipt for clearance.

Warning

Paying ESUT’s acceptance fee does not accept your JAMB offer. Accept the admission on JAMB CAPS first, because an offer left unaccepted on CAPS can be withdrawn, and ESUT cannot register you without it.

Myschool reported that ESUT’s 2026/2027 admission list went up on JAMB CAPS on 13 October 2026. JAMB gives four weeks to accept an offer and told public universities to finish admissions by 31 October 2026. If ESUT offers you a different engineering course from Chemical Engineering, it shows on CAPS as a separate offer that you can accept or reject. Myschool also reported ESUT change of course and transfer forms for 2026/2027 on 28 October 2026; I have not seen their terms, so read the notice on the ESUT portal before you rely on a later switch.

If a CAPS status confuses you, our JAMB CAPS guide explains each one. Candidates who chose another school can read the JAMB change of institution guide, and if you plan to sit the UTME again, start with when JAMB 2027 registration starts.

Studying Chemical Engineering at ESUT

Chemical Engineering is one of ten programmes in ESUT’s Faculty of Engineering for 2026/2027. It leads to a B.Eng. that runs for five years, the NUC standard for engineering degrees. ESUT’s main campus is at Agbani in Nkanu West, Enugu State. COREN’s 2018 visitors recommended that all engineering departments move to the main campus, and ESUT’s notices I checked do not say where each department sits today, so confirm the location at clearance.

What you study

  • Foundations (years 1 and 2): calculus and engineering mathematics, physics, general and organic chemistry, engineering drawing and workshop practice.
  • Core chemical engineering: material and energy balances, chemical engineering thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, heat and mass transfer.
  • Process engineering: unit operations such as distillation and absorption, chemical reaction engineering, process control and instrumentation.
  • Design and applications: plant and process design, petroleum and petrochemical processing, polymers, environmental and safety engineering.
  • Industrial training and project: SIWES placement and a final-year design or research project.

This is the usual shape of a Nigerian B.Eng. under the NUC engineering standards, not ESUT’s own course list. The department’s handbook gives the exact course codes after admission.

Accreditation: NUC and COREN

Two bodies matter for an engineering degree. The NUC accredits the programme as a university degree, and the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN) accredits it for professional registration as an engineer. The Enugu State Government reported in May 2025 that ESUT secured full NUC accreditation for programmes in its Faculty of Engineering, among others, after the 2024 exercise. That statement is at faculty level and names no programme.

COREN’s report of its February 2018 visit to ESUT lists undergraduate Chemical Engineering with a score of 71.5% and a recommendation of full accreditation, the same status it held from 2012 to 2017. The report notes that only the COREN Council gives the final verdict, and I found no newer COREN report on ESUT. Ask the department for its current COREN status, because it affects how smoothly you register as an engineer after graduation.

How Chemical Engineering compares with other ESUT engineering courses

ESUT’s 2026/2027 advert lists ten engineering programmes. Only three are named in its minimum score bands; the rest fall under the general 160 line. The COREN column is from the 2018 visit report and is the latest programme-level record I found.

ESUT engineering programme2026/2027 minimum UTMECOREN 2018 visit (undergraduate)
Agricultural and Bioresources Engineering160 (not named)Full accreditation recommended (70%)
Biomedical Engineering160 (not named)Not in the 2018 report (newer programme)
Chemical Engineering (this page)160 (not named)Full accreditation recommended (71.5%)
Civil Engineering180 (named)Full accreditation recommended (72.5%)

Metallurgical and Materials Engineering160 (not named)Full accreditation recommended (71%)
Software Engineering200 (named)New for 2026/2027; NUC-approved, not yet accredited

If you like chemistry but are unsure about engineering, ESUT’s Industrial Chemistry degree uses the same UTME subjects. If you want a related engineering route, Metallurgical and Materials Engineering shares much of the same science base.

Career paths after Chemical Engineering

  • Process or production engineer in oil and gas, refining, food and beverage, cement or pharmaceutical plants.
  • Quality control and laboratory roles in manufacturing.
  • Health, safety and environment (HSE) officer.
  • Water treatment and environmental engineering.
  • Research, teaching and postgraduate study, often abroad in process or petroleum engineering.

Mistakes Chemical Engineering applicants make

  • Registering Biology instead of Chemistry or Physics: the UTME for Chemical Engineering needs Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry, all three.
  • Trusting a quoted “departmental cut-off”: ESUT has not published one for this course.
  • Assuming the minimum guarantees a place: it only makes you eligible for screening.
  • Mismatched names: ESUT requires the same name on your O’level, UTME result and other documents.
  • Leaving O’level off CAPS: ESUT made the CAPS upload compulsory for every candidate.
  • Paying acceptance before accepting on CAPS: the CAPS acceptance comes first.

ESUT cut off mark for Chemical Engineering: frequently asked questions

Is 180 enough for Chemical Engineering in ESUT? 180 clears ESUT’s 160 minimum, so you can be screened, but it is low for an engineering course. I would aim for 220 or more and list a backup.

Can I use Biology instead of Physics for Chemical Engineering at ESUT? No. JAMB’s entry requires Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry with English, and ESUT has no remark changing that.

Is ESUT Chemical Engineering accredited by COREN? COREN’s 2018 visit recommended full accreditation for it with a score of 71.5%. I found no newer COREN report, so confirm the current status with the department.

Can I enter ESUT Chemical Engineering with ND or HND? Yes, the JAMB brochure says ESUT accepts NCE, ND, HND or a first degree with good grades, plus UTME requirements, into 200 or 300 level. Apply through JAMB Direct Entry and get your former school to clear you on JAMB e-facility.
