The Gregory University cut off mark for English and Literary Studies is not published as a separate figure. Gregory set 140 as the general minimum UTME score in its 2024/2025 and 2025/2026 notices, but JAMB’s minimum for universities in 2026 is 150, so plan for at least 150 and aim for about 165 to 175. The course is on JAMB’s list of Gregory courses as English and Literary Studies; the same list also has a separate entry called “Literature in English” with identical subject rules. On accreditation, NUC’s report page shows Gregory’s English Language and Literature in English programme with full accreditation after a November 2024 visit, with a score of 89%.
2027/2028 update: Gregory University cut-off marks usually stay the same from one year to the next, so the figures on this page are what 2027/2028 candidates should plan with. They come from the latest notices Gregory has published (2024/2025 and 2025/2026) and JAMB’s 2026 national minimum, because no 2026/2027 Gregory notice with a score was available. If the 2027/2028 notice changes anything, we will update this page.

| JAMB minimum for universities | 150 | Official, May 2026 |
| Departmental cut-off | Not published | Gregory has never released one |

Gregory University cut-off history for English and Literary Studies
| Session | Figure | What it is | Status |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2026/2027 | Not published | No Gregory notice with a minimum score was found | JAMB’s university minimum for 2026 is 150 |
| 2025/2026 | 140 | General minimum UTME score for Gregory’s post-UTME (Gregory as first choice) | Myschool reprint of the notice, 24 July 2025 |
| 2024/2025 | 140 | General minimum UTME score (2023 UTME) for screening | Official, Gregory University website, 19 August 2024 |
Gregory has never published a separate figure for English and Literary Studies. The 140 applied to every course in both notices. JAMB raised the floor for universities to 150 at its May 2026 policy meeting, so no Gregory notice can admit anyone below 150 for 2026 admissions, and I would not expect the 2027 floor to drop back. Plan with 150 as the line you must cross, and treat anything above it as your margin for the course itself.
Safe target score for English and Literary Studies at Gregory (my advice)
English draws more applicants than most Arts courses because it leads into teaching, media and communications work, and Gregory’s programme has a published full accreditation. The table is my judgement, not a Gregory rule.
| Your UTME score | My read for Gregory English |
|---|---|
| Below 150 | Not eligible in the 2026 cycle |
| 150 to 164 | Eligible; apply early with strong Literature and English credits |
| 165 to 179 | Good chance |
| 180 and above | Strong |
UTME subject combination and O’level for Gregory English
| Requirement | English and Literary Studies |
|---|---|
| UTME subjects | Use of English, Literature in English, one other Arts subject, and another Arts or Social Science subject |
| O’level | Five credits including Literature in English and English Language |
| Mathematics | Not named in JAMB’s general line; get at least a pass, ideally a credit |
| Sittings | Not more than two (Gregory’s 2025/2026 notice) |
| Direct Entry | Two A level passes including Literature in English and one other Arts subject (JAMB’s general rule) |
| Gregory-specific remark | None in the brochure reprint |
These rules come from the JAMB brochure entry for English and Literary Studies as reprinted by Myschool. The entry for Literature in English gives the same UTME, O’level and Direct Entry lines, and neither names Gregory in its remarks. Literature in English is compulsory in the UTME for both.
Which name should you pick on the JAMB form? The course this page covers is English and Literary Studies, and NUC’s report calls Gregory’s programme English Language and Literature in English. Because JAMB lists two English courses for Gregory, call or message the admissions office before you register and ask which one feeds the department. Your subjects work for either, so a later JAMB change of course between them is simple if needed.
Mathematics needs a word. The general O’level line does not name it, and some universities, FUOYE and UNIHEZ among them, add a remark asking for at least a pass. Gregory has no remark either way. I would still go in with a Mathematics credit, because many admission officers in Nigeria expect it for every degree.
How Gregory University screening works for English
Gregory runs an online post-UTME registration. The details below come from the university’s 2024 notice and the 2025/2026 notice as reprinted by Myschool. Gregory had not published 2026/2027 dates or a fee in any source I could reach, so treat the fee as last year’s figure.
| Detail | What Gregory has published |
|---|---|
| Where to apply | gregoryuniversityuturu.edu.ng/postutme |
| Who can apply | Candidates who chose Gregory University in the UTME and scored the minimum (140 in 2024/2025 and 2025/2026; JAMB’s floor is now 150) |
| Fee | ₦2,000, non-refundable, paid with an ATM card (2025/2026 notice) |
| Uploads | Passport photograph (PDF), UTME result slip, O’level result (WAEC, NECO or NABTEB) |
| O’level sittings | Up to two sittings |
| Test or interview | Not stated in any notice; Gregory has not said whether it runs a CBT |
| Aggregate formula | Not published |
| Other routes | Gregory’s site has links for transfer, JUPEB and distance learning; Direct Entry candidates are screened too |
Worked example for an English candidate
Gregory has not published how it ranks candidates, so there is no official aggregate to calculate. What you can work out is how far your UTME score sits above JAMB’s floor and above a sensible target, and whether your O’level meets the course rules. The method below is my illustration, not a Gregory formula.
Take Ifeoma, who scored 172 with English, Literature in English, Christian Religious Studies and Government, and has B2 in Literature, B3 in English Language, C4 in CRS, C5 in Government and C6 in Mathematics from one sitting.
- National floor: 172 minus 150 = 22.
- Against my safe target: 172 sits inside the 165 to 175 band.
- O’level check: English Language and Literature credits are there, plus three more and a Mathematics credit. That meets the rule.
- What I would advise: register early and confirm the course name with the admissions office.
Tunde scored 181 with English, Government, Economics and CRS. The score is strong, but without Literature in English in his UTME he does not meet the subject rule for this course. He could look at a Social Science course such as International Relations with that combination, or retake the UTME with Literature.
How to apply for English and Literary Studies at Gregory University, step by step
- Get your JAMB profile code: text NIN, a space and your 11-digit NIN to 55019 or 66019 from the phone line linked to your NIN.
- Register the UTME correctly: pick English and Literary Studies as the course and Use of English, Literature in English, one other Arts subject and one Arts or Social Science subject as your subjects, with Gregory University, Uturu as your first choice.
- Fix your choice if needed: if Gregory was not your first choice, do a JAMB change of institution before you register for screening. The 2025/2026 notice was for candidates who chose Gregory first.
- Upload your O’level to CAPS: at a JAMB-accredited CBT centre, once your WAEC, NECO or NABTEB result is out. Universities cannot recommend you on CAPS without it.
- Register for screening: on the Gregory post-UTME portal, fill the form, upload your passport photograph (PDF), UTME result and O’level result, then pay the screening fee online.
- Watch CAPS: log in at efacility.jamb.gov.ng, open Check Admission Status and then Access my CAPS. Our JAMB CAPS guide explains each status.
- Accept on CAPS: accept the offer, print your JAMB admission letter, then follow Gregory’s instructions for the acceptance fee and clearance. Gregory has not published its acceptance fee in any source I reached, so confirm the amount on the official portal before paying.
Warning
Gregory University says applicants should pay only through its official portals and that it has no authorised agents. Every genuine admission shows on JAMB CAPS, so ignore anyone selling a “slot” or a “special list”.
For the 2026/2027 cycle, JAMB set 30 November 2026 as the admission deadline for private universities, according to the News Agency of Nigeria (11 May 2026). JAMB also stated that admissions done outside CAPS are illegal. Gregory’s phone lines on its 2024 admission notice were 0806 094 4681 and 0803 733 3920.

Mistakes that cost English applicants
- Planning with 140: JAMB’s 150 floor applies now.
- Leaving out Literature in English: it is compulsory in the UTME and at O’level.
- Picking the wrong English course on JAMB: Gregory has two English entries; confirm which one you need.
- Ignoring Mathematics: go in with at least a pass, ideally a credit.
- Gregory not as first choice: fix it with a change of institution before screening.
