The ESUT cut off mark for Law for 2026/2027 is 240 in the 2026 UTME. Enugu State University of Science and Technology named Law in its highest band in the official Post-UTME advert of 4 July 2026, together with Medicine and Surgery and Nursing Sciences. No other course at ESUT asked for more.
2027/2028 update: ESUT cut-off marks usually stay the same from one year to the next, so the figures on this page are what 2027/2028 candidates should plan with. They come from the latest official notice (2026/2027). If the 2027/2028 notice changes anything, we will update this page.
That 240 is the score you need to be screened. Winning a Law place takes more. ESUT does not publish its final merit score for Law, and because the Council of Legal Education (CLE) caps how many Law students each university can take, the real competition sits well above 240. Below I go through the official figures, the cut-off history, a safe target score (my advice), the JAMB subject combination and O’level rules, how ESUT’s online screening works, the CAPS steps, and the CLE position of ESUT’s Faculty of Law.
ESUT cut off mark for Law 2027/2028 at a glance
| Item | 2026/2027 position | Status |
|---|---|---|
| JAMB national minimum for universities | 150 | Official (JAMB policy meeting, 11 May 2026) |
| ESUT minimum UTME for Law | 240 | Official (ESUT Post-UTME advert, 4 July 2026) |
| ESUT final admission (merit) score for Law | Not published | ESUT does not release one |
| Post-UTME test | None | Online screening only |
| Screening fee | ₦2,000 | Official |
| Faculty | Faculty of Law | ESUT advert |
| CLE approval | Listed (no moratorium note) | CLE public notice, 14 August 2026 |
| Admission list | On JAMB CAPS from 13 October 2026 | Myschool report |
Keep two numbers apart. The minimum UTME score (240) is a gate ESUT announces before screening, and anyone below it cannot apply for Law. The merit score is the lowest score ESUT actually admitted into Law that year. ESUT keeps that one internal. With a quota fixed by the CLE, the merit score for Law is normally far higher than the minimum.
Law cut-off history at ESUT
| Session | Figure | What it is | Status |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2026/2027 | 240 | Minimum UTME to apply (Law named) | Official ESUT advert |
| 2025/2026 | 240 | Minimum UTME to apply (Law named) | Previous year, from a blog summary of ESUT’s notice |
| 2025 (as labelled) | 297 | Blog “cut-off” with no ESUT source | Unofficial (Legit.ng, updated November 2025) |
The official minimum stayed at 240 across the last two sessions. The 297 figure comes from Legit.ng’s list of ESUT “cut-off marks for all courses”. It names no ESUT document, the scale behind it is unclear, and it does not match anything in ESUT’s adverts. I list it only so you recognise it when it turns up on WhatsApp. It does hint at how crowded Law is. ESUT can move its minimums each year, so read the new advert before you plan around 240.
Safe target score for Law at ESUT (my advice)
This section is my judgement, not an ESUT rule. Law shares the top band with Medicine and Nursing, it is one of the most applied-for courses at any Nigerian state university, and the CLE limits the intake. A score that merely clears 240 puts you in a long queue.
| Your 2026 UTME score | My read for ESUT Law |
|---|---|
| 240 to 254 | Eligible for screening. Merit admission is unlikely unless the applicant pool is weak. |
| 255 to 269 | Possible, mainly with strong O’level grades and Enugu State origin. |
| 270 to 289 | A good chance. |
| 290 and above | Comfortable. This is the range I would aim for. |
If you are writing the UTME in 2027 and want ESUT Law, my safe target is 275 or more, with A or B grades in English Language and Literature in English. Use of English carries a full 100 marks in the UTME, so it is the cheapest place to gain points for a Law candidate.
Catchment, state of origin and the Law quota
ESUT does not publish a catchment list. It is owned by the Enugu State Government, so Enugu indigenes are its primary catchment, but it admits candidates from every state. The federal 45/35/20 merit, catchment and ELDS split has never been stated as ESUT policy, so do not plan around it.
The quota matters more for Law than for most courses. In August 2024 Governor Peter Mbah asked the CLE to raise ESUT’s Law admission quota so that more Enugu indigenes and residents could get places. No figure was given, and I have not seen a published quota for ESUT. What it tells you is that the state itself considers Law places too few. Plan to win on merit.
JAMB subject combination and O’level requirements for ESUT Law
| Requirement | Law (LL.B.) |
|---|---|
| UTME subjects | Use of English, Literature in English and two other Arts or Social Science subjects (JAMB’s usual Law combination) |
| O’level | Five credits including English Language and Literature in English; most Law faculties also want Mathematics |
| Sittings | Not stated in ESUT’s advert. Two sittings is the common ceiling; one sitting is safer |
| Direct Entry | Usually two A’level passes in Arts or Social Science subjects. ESUT has not published its own DE grades |
| Special requirements | None published by ESUT (no interview, essay or test) |
These are JAMB’s usual requirements for Law. I could not open the Law page of JAMB’s brochure this session, and ESUT’s advert lists no course-level subjects, so check JAMB’s e-brochure (IBASS) or a CBT centre before you register. Common combinations that fit are Literature, Government and CRS or IRS, or Literature, Government and Economics. Government is useful because so much of first-year Law builds on it.
Two points catch Law candidates. Literature in English is the subject most Law faculties insist on in both the UTME and O’level, so do not drop it. And a missing Mathematics credit is a frequent reason for rejection at clearance, even when the UTME combination was correct.
How ESUT screening works for Law
ESUT ran its 2026/2027 screening on these terms.
| Detail | ESUT 2026/2027 screening |
|---|---|
| Who could apply | Candidates who chose ESUT in the 2026 UTME, and candidates who did not choose ESUT but changed institution to ESUT through JAMB first |
| Score needed | The minimum UTME score ESUT set for the course (see the table above) |
| Direct Entry | Screened online too; former institutions must verify and clear DE candidates on JAMB e-facility |
| Registration window | Tuesday 7 July to Saturday 15 August 2026 (closed) |
| Fee | ₦2,000, paid at a bank through Enugu State IGR Pay Direct or online by debit card |
| Test | None. Screening is online only, with no physical screening and no aptitude test |
| Awaiting results | Allowed for May/June 2026 WAEC, NECO and NABTEB, but results released after 30 September 2026 are not accepted |
| O’level upload | Every candidate must upload O’level results on JAMB CAPS |
| Names | Must match on your O’level certificates, UTME result and other documents |
| Admission status | Published on the ESUT portal and JAMB CAPS |
ESUT has not published an aggregate formula. The 2026/2027 advert sets a minimum UTME score per course and an online screening with no test, and it says nothing about weights or O’level grade points. So the only arithmetic you can do with official figures is to check how far you are above your course’s minimum. Some blogs quote a Post-UTME percentage for ESUT; that cannot be right for 2026/2027, because there was no Post-UTME test to score.
Worked example for a Law candidate
Take Chiamaka, who scored 268 in the 2026 UTME with A1, B2, B3, B3 and C4 in her five O’level subjects.
- Eligibility check (official): 268 minus the 240 minimum = 28 marks above the line.
- UTME half (illustrative method): 268 ÷ 8 = 33.5 out of 50.
- O’level half (illustrative method): 10 + 9 + 8 + 8 + 7 = 42 out of 50.
- Illustrative total: 33.5 + 42 = 75.5 out of 100.
Now compare Tobenna, who scored 252 with A1, A1, B2, B2 and B2. His illustrative total is 31.5 + 47 = 78.5, three points ahead of Chiamaka although she beat him by 16 marks in JAMB. If ESUT ranks on UTME alone, Chiamaka is ahead. ESUT has not said which applies, so a Law candidate should treat both the UTME score and O’level grades as part of the contest.
To see why your O’level grades can still matter, here is a method some other Nigerian universities use: half the aggregate from the UTME (your score divided by 8, out of 50) and half from five O’level subjects (A1 = 10, B2 = 9, B3 = 8, C4 = 7, C5 = 6, C6 = 5, out of 50). ESUT has not published this or any other formula. I use it only to compare two candidates, never to predict an ESUT cut-off.
How to apply for Law at ESUT, step by step
- Get your JAMB profile code: text NIN, a space and your 11-digit NIN (for example NIN 12345678901) to 55019 or 66019 from the phone number linked to your NIN. JAMB replies with the profile code you need to buy the UTME form.
- Register the UTME with the right subjects: pick Use of English, Literature in English and two Arts or Social Science subjects and choose ESUT and Law. ESUT’s 2026 advert also let candidates who chose another school apply after a JAMB change of institution, but choosing ESUT from the start saves you that step and its cost.
- Upload your O’level to CAPS: once your WAEC, NECO or NABTEB result is out, have it uploaded to your JAMB profile at an accredited CBT centre or JAMB office. ESUT’s advert makes this compulsory for every candidate, and a result that is missing on CAPS can hold your admission back even after ESUT picks you.
- Open the ESUT screening form: go to portal.esut.edu.ng, select the session, and under Regular Students open the Admission Screening Registration for that session (Direct Entry has its own form). Enter your JAMB registration number and fill the details form to generate an invoice.
- Pay ₦2,000: pay at a commercial bank through Enugu State IGR Pay Direct with the printed invoice and its reference number, or pay online with a debit card.
- Finish and print: return to the portal, re-enter your JAMB registration number, complete the form, confirm and submit, then print the acknowledgement slip. ESUT warns that false information leads to disqualification.
- Check and accept on CAPS: log in at efacility.jamb.gov.ng, choose Check Admission Status, then Access my CAPS and Admission Status. If ESUT has offered you Law, accept it, then print your JAMB admission letter.
- Pay the acceptance fee on the ESUT portal: blogs report ESUT’s acceptance fee at about ₦26,000 (₦26,100 in some reports). ESUT’s 2026/2027 notices I checked do not state it, so confirm the amount on the portal before you pay, and keep the receipt for clearance.
Warning
Paying ESUT’s acceptance fee does not accept your JAMB offer. Accept the admission on JAMB CAPS first, because an offer left unaccepted on CAPS can be withdrawn, and ESUT cannot register you without it.
Myschool reported that ESUT’s 2026/2027 admission list went up on JAMB CAPS on 13 October 2026. JAMB gives candidates four weeks to accept an offer and told public universities to finish admissions by 31 October 2026. If ESUT offers you a different course, for example Political Science or International Relations and Diplomacy, it shows on CAPS as a separate offer that you can accept or reject. Myschool also reported ESUT change of course and transfer forms for 2026/2027 on 28 October 2026; I have not seen their terms, and moving into Law through change of course is usually hard because of the quota.
If a CAPS status confuses you, our JAMB CAPS guide explains each one. Candidates who chose another school can read the JAMB change of institution guide, and if you plan to sit the UTME again, start with when JAMB 2027 registration starts.
Studying Law at ESUT
Law is the only programme in ESUT’s Faculty of Law, and it leads to the LL.B. degree. The standard Nigerian LL.B. takes five years. After it, every graduate who wants to practise must spend a year at the Nigerian Law School and pass the Bar Final examination before being called to the Nigerian Bar. ESUT’s main campus is at Agbani, Nkanu West, Enugu State; ESUT’s notices I checked do not say which campus houses the Faculty of Law, so confirm at clearance.
What you study
- Year one: Legal Methods, the Nigerian Legal System and general studies courses.
- Core private law: Contract, Torts, Land Law, Equity and Trusts, Commercial Law.
- Core public law: Constitutional Law, Criminal Law, Administrative Law.
- Later years: Law of Evidence, Jurisprudence, Company Law, plus electives such as International Law, Family Law or Oil and Gas Law.
- Final year: a long essay (research project) and moot court exercises.
Course titles and electives differ from one faculty to another, so treat this as the usual shape of an LL.B. under the NUC standards and check ESUT’s own course list after admission.
Accreditation: NUC and the Council of Legal Education
Two bodies matter for a Law degree in Nigeria. The NUC accredits the programme, and the CLE decides whether a university may admit Law students at all and whether its graduates can enter the Nigerian Law School.
- NUC: the Enugu State Government reported in May 2025 that ESUT secured full NUC accreditation for programmes in its Faculty of Law, among other faculties, after the 2024 accreditation exercise.
- CLE: the CLE’s public notice of 14 August 2026, listing 122 universities approved to admit students into the LL.B. programme, includes “Enugu State University of Science and Technology, Agbani, Enugu State” with no moratorium note against it.
That CLE listing is the single most important check for any Law applicant, because graduates of a faculty the CLE has not approved cannot go to Law School. You can read the CLE list of approved universities (August 2026) yourself.
Career paths after Law
- Barrister and solicitor in private practice, after the call to the Bar.
- Legal officer or in-house counsel in banks, oil companies and other firms.
- Ministry of Justice, the judiciary and other public service roles.
- Company secretarial, compliance and regulatory work.
- Teaching and research after postgraduate study.
Related ESUT courses you could list as a backup or compare:
- ESUT Political Science cut-off mark
- ESUT International Relations and Diplomacy cut-off mark
- ESUT English and Literary Studies cut-off mark
- ESUT History and International Studies cut-off mark
Political Science and International Relations need 180 at ESUT in 2026/2027; English and Literary Studies and History fall under the general 160 minimum.
Mistakes Law applicants make
- Treating 240 as the admission score: it only gets you into screening.
- Dropping Literature in English: it is the subject Law faculties look for first.
- No Mathematics credit at O’level: a common clearance problem.
- Believing a blog figure like 297 is ESUT’s cut-off: no ESUT document carries it.
- Mismatched names: ESUT requires the same name on your O’level, UTME and other documents.
- Paying acceptance before accepting on CAPS: the CAPS acceptance comes first.
ESUT cut off mark for Law: frequently asked questions
Is 250 enough for Law in ESUT? 250 is ten marks above ESUT’s 240 minimum, so you can be screened, but it is unlikely to win a Law place on merit unless your O’level grades are excellent. I would aim for 275 or more.
Is ESUT Law accredited by the Council of Legal Education? Yes. ESUT appears on the CLE’s August 2026 list of universities approved to admit LL.B. students, with no moratorium note, and its Faculty of Law was reported fully accredited by the NUC in 2025.
Is Mathematics compulsory for Law at ESUT? ESUT’s advert does not set course subjects, but most Nigerian Law faculties require an O’level credit in Mathematics, so treat it as compulsory.
Can I use awaiting result for ESUT Law? Yes, for 2026/2027 ESUT accepted awaiting May/June 2026 WAEC, NECO and NABTEB results, but not results released after 30 September 2026.
