The GOUNI cut-off mark for Mass Communication is 150 in the UTME. Godfrey Okoye University, Enugu, puts Mass Communication under “other programmes” in its 2026/2027 list of minimum JAMB scores, and that line reads 150. It is the same as JAMB’s national minimum for universities, and the application form for the course costs nothing.
2027/2028 update: GOUNI cut-off marks usually stay the same from one year to the next, so the figures on this page are what 2027/2028 candidates should plan with. They come from the latest official notice (2026/2027). If the 2027/2028 notice changes anything, we will update this page.
Register the course on JAMB as Mass Communication. That is the exact name on JAMB’s course list for GOUNI, and the course is also on GOUNI’s own 2026/2027 list of available programmes in the Faculty of Management and Social Sciences. Two things trip up Mass Comm applicants at GOUNI more than the score: the Mathematics credit GOUNI insists on, and the Direct Entry rules, which differ from one GOUNI document to another. Both are covered below.
You will also find a realistic target score, how GOUNI’s online admission works with two worked examples, what the department teaches (its course list is public), and how GOUNI compares with UNN, ESUT and Renaissance University for the same course.

Is 150 enough for Mass Communication at GOUNI?
On paper, yes. GOUNI’s 2026/2027 admission page sets only three courses above 150: Medicine and Surgery (200), Law (200) and Nursing (180). Mass Communication falls under the general 150 line. AbsTechConnect repeated the same structure on 24 May 2026, though that is a blog and not a GOUNI notice.
GOUNI publishes no merit list and no departmental cut-off, so nobody outside the admissions office knows the score of the weakest candidate admitted last year. Mass Communication is one of the more popular social science courses in the South East, and that matters at a public university with a quota. At a private university that admits through an online form and replies within days, my reading is that a 150 candidate with the right O’level and an early application has a fair chance. GOUNI has not published anything that confirms or contradicts that.

How GOUNI compares for Mass Communication in Enugu
| University | 2026/2027 figure for Mass Communication | Type |
|---|---|---|
| Godfrey Okoye University (GOUNI) | 150 | Private |
| Renaissance University (RNU) | 150 | Private |
| University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) | 160 to apply for screening | Federal |
| Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT) | 180 (Mass Communication is in ESUT’s 180 band) | State |
The UNN figure comes from its screening notice of 13 July 2026 and the ESUT figure from its Post-UTME advert of 4 July 2026. Our UNN Mass Communication guide and RNU Mass Communication guide cover those schools in detail.
Safe target score for GOUNI Mass Communication (my advice)
| Your UTME score | My read for GOUNI Mass Communication |
|---|---|
| Below 150 | Not eligible at any Nigerian university in 2026/2027 |
| 150 to 169 | Eligible; apply early and make sure your Mathematics credit is on CAPS |
| 170 to 199 | Comfortable at GOUNI |
| 200 and above | Strong, and close to ESUT’s band if you want a public option too |
For the 2027 UTME I would aim for 170 or more. That leaves room if GOUNI raises its general line, clears UNN’s 160 screening mark, and keeps GOUNI as a backup while you try for a public university too. GOUNI is private, so there is no catchment or state quota to help or hurt you.
UTME subject combination and O’level for GOUNI Mass Communication
| Requirement | Mass Communication at GOUNI |
|---|---|
| UTME subjects (JAMB rule) | Use of English and any three Arts or Social Science subjects |
| GOUNI UTME remark | None |
| O’level (JAMB rule) | Five credits in English Language and four other Arts or Social Science subjects |
| GOUNI O’level remark in the brochure | Credit in Mathematics |
| GOUNI’s own curriculum (Sept 2023) | Five credits including Mathematics and English Language plus three other Arts or Social Science subjects, in not more than two sittings |
| GOUNI form page (all courses) | Five credits including English and Mathematics |
| JUPEB combination at GOUNI | Government, Literature in English, and CRS or Economics |
Which three UTME subjects should you write?
JAMB’s base rule is wide: any three Arts or Social Science subjects. GOUNI adds nothing to it. My pick would be Literature in English, Government and CRS or Economics, which mirrors GOUNI’s own JUPEB combination for the course. Literature is worth including even though GOUNI does not demand it. UNILAG, ABU, Bowen, JABU and several other universities make it compulsory for Mass Communication, so it keeps your options open if you later change institution.
Avoid writing Mathematics as a UTME subject for this course unless you have a reason. JAMB’s base rule asks for Arts or Social Science subjects, and only a few universities (UNILAG, DELSU, KWASU) accept Mathematics in the UTME under their own remarks. GOUNI has no such remark.
The Mathematics credit
This is where GOUNI differs from the national rule. JAMB’s base O’level line for Mass Communication does not name Mathematics, but three GOUNI sources do: the brochure remark, the department’s curriculum and the admission form page. Treat a credit in Mathematics as compulsory. A pass (D7 or E8) is not enough for GOUNI, even though a few universities, such as IMSU and JABU, accept a pass for this course.
Your other credits should come from Arts or Social Science subjects: Literature, Government, CRS, Economics, History or a Nigerian language. GOUNI’s curriculum allows two sittings at most, so a combined WAEC and NECO result is acceptable as long as all five credits are covered between them.
Direct Entry into Mass Communication at GOUNI
GOUNI’s documents do not agree on Direct Entry, so read this section carefully before you buy a JAMB DE form.
| Source | What it says about Direct Entry |
|---|---|
| JAMB brochure, GOUNI remark | A B.Sc., B.A. or HND in any discipline, or an ND at upper credit in Mass Communication |
| GOUNI Mass Communication curriculum (Sept 2023) | Five O’level credits including Mathematics and English, plus a merit diploma in Mass Communication, Journalism or a related field, or two A-level passes, or two NCE major passes, or two IJMB passes |
| GOUNI department web page | Five credits with at least two at advanced level (or four with three at advanced level); English, Mathematics, Economics and Government or History compulsory |
| GOUNI admission form page | Apply with the current JAMB Direct Entry form |
Every version requires O’level credits in English and Mathematics. Beyond that, the safest reading is this: an upper credit ND in Mass Communication or a degree or HND in another field fits the brochure, while A-level, IJMB or NCE holders should check with GOUNI admissions by e-mail before registering. Direct Entry students start at 200 level and finish in three years.
How GOUNI admission works for Mass Communication
GOUNI’s 2026/2027 admission page describes an online application followed by an e-mailed decision within three working days. It mentions no written Post-UTME test and no interview for undergraduates, and it gives no closing date.
| Detail | GOUNI 2026/2027 process |
|---|---|
| Where to apply | Fill Admission Form page on gouni.edu.ng |
| Form fee | Free |
| Who can apply | Candidates with 150 or more who chose GOUNI, or who change institution to GOUNI |
| Decision | E-mailed within three working days |
| After an offer | Pay acceptance, tuition, ICT and other fees through GOUNI’s official platform |
| Transfer students | CGPA of 2.5 on a 4-point scale or 4.0 on a 5-point scale |
Worked examples for Mass Communication applicants
GOUNI publishes no aggregate formula, so the check is simple: your UTME score against 150, and your O’level against the five credits with Mathematics and English included.
Chiamaka scored 176 in English, Literature in English, Government and CRS. Her WAEC has B2 in English Language, C6 in Mathematics, B3 in Literature, C4 in Government and B3 in CRS, all in one sitting.
- Eligibility: 176 minus 150 = 26. She is 26 marks above GOUNI’s minimum.
- Against my target: 176 sits in my comfortable band.
- O’level check: English and Mathematics are credits, and Literature, Government and CRS make five. She meets JAMB’s rule and GOUNI’s.
- What I would advise: apply as soon as the form is open and accept on CAPS once the offer appears.
Ifeanyi scored 194 in English, Literature, Government and Economics, but his only Mathematics result is a D7 from NECO. His UTME is better than Chiamaka’s, yet GOUNI would turn him down on O’level because it wants a Mathematics credit. He needs to sit WAEC or NECO again (GCE or the November series) and get at least C6. If that result arrives in time and is uploaded to CAPS, he can still be considered, since GOUNI accepts two sittings.
How to apply for Mass Communication at GOUNI
- Get your JAMB profile code: text NIN, a space and your 11-digit NIN to 55019 or 66019 from the phone line linked to your NIN.
- Register the right course: pick Godfrey Okoye University and the course exactly as JAMB lists it, Mass Communication, with the correct UTME subjects.
- Fix your choice if needed: GOUNI says candidates who did not choose it first must do a JAMB change of institution to GOUNI. Our change of institution guide walks you through it.
- Upload your O’level to CAPS: do this at a JAMB-accredited centre, and check that every grade shows correctly on your e-Facility profile.
- Fill GOUNI’s online form: open the Fill Admission Form page on gouni.edu.ng and apply for Mass Communication. Use an e-mail address you check daily, because the decision comes by e-mail.
- Form fee: free for Mass Communication. Anyone who charges you for this form is not GOUNI.
- Wait for the e-mail: GOUNI says it replies within three working days of submission.
- Accept on CAPS: log in at efacility.jamb.gov.ng, open Check Admission Status, then Access my CAPS, and accept the offer. Our JAMB CAPS guide explains each status.
- Pay fees the right way: after an offer, GOUNI asks students outside Medicine, Nursing and Law to pay acceptance, tuition, ICT and other fees. Use only GOUNI’s official online platform.
Warning
GOUNI tells applicants to pay only through the university’s official online payment platform and says money paid into a personal account is at the payer’s own risk. Nobody can sell you a GOUNI admission slot. Every genuine offer shows on JAMB CAPS.
For the 2026/2027 cycle, JAMB set 30 November 2026 as the admission deadline for private universities, and GOUNI repeated that date in its news post of 12 May 2026. That window runs until 30 November 2026. JAMB has not announced the 2027/2028 dates yet; they normally come after the UTME, so 2027 candidates should watch for them then.
Studying Mass Communication at GOUNI
GOUNI runs Mass Communication as a four-year B.Sc. in the Faculty of Management and Social Sciences, with Direct Entry students taking three years. The department’s curriculum handbook (dated September 2023 and covering 2023 to 2028) requires at least 120 credit units to graduate. It arranges the degree into three sequences: Journalism, Public Relations and Advertising, and Broadcast and Film.
What you study, level by level
| Level | Examples of courses in GOUNI’s curriculum |
|---|---|
| 100 | Introduction to Human Communication, Writing for the Media, Foundations of Broadcasting and Film, Principles of Public Relations, Introduction to Advertising, Introduction to News Writing, Introduction to Photojournalism |
| 200 | Feature Writing, Editing and Graphics of Communication, Radio/TV News Reporting and Production, Advert Copy Writing, Writing for Public Relations, Basics of Screenwriting and Film Animation |
| 300 | Theories of Communication, Data Analysis in Communication Research, Online Journalism, Investigative Journalism, Film Production and Screen Directing, Advertising and PR Research |
| 400 | Mass Media Law, Mass Media Ethics, Media Attachment, Communication for Development, International Communication, Original Research Project |
GOUNI adds its own courses on top of the national ones, coded GOU-MAC. They include Digital Content Creation, Multi-media Journalism, Social Media Marketing and Merchandizing, Strategic Communication and Business Analytics, Igbo Culture and Development Communication, Political Communication in South East Nigeria, Catholic Media, Tourism Communication, and e-Health and Risk Communication. The digital and business courses are the ones I would pay attention to, because that is where most entry-level media jobs now sit.
There is no SIWES in the handbook. Instead, final-year students do a Media Attachment (MCM 403), a placement with a media or communications organisation.
A note on the NUC unbundling of Mass Communication
NUC has confirmed that Mass Communication is being unbundled into seven separate degree programmes, including Journalism and Media Studies, Public Relations, Advertising and Broadcasting (reported by ICIR). Some universities have already switched. GOUNI still admits into Mass Communication for 2026/2027, and JAMB still lists Mass Communication for GOUNI, so that is the course you register. If GOUNI moves to the new names later, the change would show on its form page and JAMB’s list first.
Accreditation
I could not confirm the current NUC status of GOUNI Mass Communication. It was not among the 13 GOUNI programmes Myschool reported as fully accredited in August 2021, and no NUC accreditation report naming GOUNI Mass Communication came up in searches. NUC’s online results PDF cuts off before universities starting with G. GOUNI’s accreditation page says all its programmes have NUC accreditation, without dates or per-course detail. Before you pay acceptance, e-mail admissions@gouni.edu.ng and ask for the programme’s current NUC status in writing.
Careers after Mass Communication
Graduates work as reporters, editors, presenters and producers in print, broadcast and online media; in public relations for companies, banks, churches and government agencies; in advertising and media planning; and increasingly as content creators and social media managers. Public relations practice in Nigeria is regulated by the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR) and advertising by the Advertising Regulatory Council of Nigeria (ARCON), so plan on professional membership after graduation if you head that way.

Mistakes Mass Communication applicants make at GOUNI
- Relying on a Mathematics pass: GOUNI wants a credit, even though JAMB’s base rule for the course does not name Mathematics.
- Mathematics or a science as a UTME subject: JAMB’s base rule is three Arts or Social Science subjects, and GOUNI has no remark widening it.
- Leaving GOUNI as second choice: GOUNI asks for a change of institution to GOUNI.
- Buying a DE form on an A-level or NCE result without asking: GOUNI’s own documents disagree on Direct Entry for this course.
- O’level not on CAPS: JAMB cannot process the admission without it.
- Paying anyone privately: GOUNI says payments into personal accounts are at your own risk.
