UNN Cut-Off Mark for Education Arts 2027/2028: English, History, Religion and French Requirements

UNN needs 160 in the UTME to screen for Education Arts in 2027/2028 and has published no departmental cut-off. See the UTME and O’level rules for Education English, History, Religion and French, Direct Entry, an aggregate example and target scores.

The UNN cut off mark for Education Arts courses (Education and English, Education and History, Education and Religion, Education and French and the rest) for 2026/2027 is 160 in the UTME to apply for screening, as long as UNN was your first choice. That minimum comes from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka screening notice of 13 July 2026. UNN has not published a departmental merit or catchment cut-off for any Arts Education option for 2026/2027 or 2025/2026, so be careful with sites that list separate “official” scores for each one.

2027/2028 update: UNN cut-off marks usually stay the same from one year to the next, so the figures on this page are what 2027/2028 candidates should plan with. They come from the latest official notice (2026/2027). If the 2027/2028 notice changes anything, we will update this page.

You will also see 200 quoted, which was UNN’s minimum as reported from the JAMB 2026 policy meeting on 11 May 2026. UNN screened from 160, but its declared benchmark was 200. The real difference between the options is the subject combination: each one follows the subject you will teach. This guide sets out the UTME and O’level rules for every option, Direct Entry, how screening ran, an aggregate example, admission odds and the score I would aim for.

Keep the two kinds of cut-off apart. The general cut-off (160 at UNN this session) only qualifies you for screening. A departmental cut-off is the lowest score UNN admits into a particular option after ranking applicants, and UNN does not publish it. Any target score below is my advice and labelled that way.

Which courses count as Education Arts at UNN?

UNN’s Department of Arts Education says it runs Education combined with English, French, Fine and Applied Arts, History, Igbo/Linguistics, Music and Religion, plus a Cultural and Creative Arts programme. The UNN remarks in the JAMB brochure list the same set of options. On JAMB you choose one exact option, such as Education and English Language, so pick the subject you want to teach before you register.

UNN Education Arts cut-off history

These are the only figures I could trace to UNN or JAMB. None of them is specific to any Arts Education option.

Two more pieces of information are worth having, and neither is a cut-off score:

  • 2025/2026 vacancies: UNN’s late-2025 advert (shopping) list, as reprinted by Myschool and another blog, showed Education English with only 3 unfilled places. That is a vacancy count, not a score, and it suggests the English option was close to full.
  • Unofficial estimate: Campuscybercafe groups all UNN Education courses under an estimate of 160 to 200 for 2025/2026. It calls this an estimate from trends and does not say whether it means UTME or aggregate, so treat it as an unofficial guess.

JAMB subject combination for each Education Arts option at UNN

The JAMB brochure’s general rule for Education Arts is the subject you will specialise in plus two Arts subjects, with Use of English. UNN’s remark is slightly wider: the subject to be combined plus two other Arts or Social Science subjects. For Education Music and Education Fine Arts, UNN accepts any three other subjects. On the O’level side, UNN wants five credits that include the subject to be combined with Education, and it names specific credits for several options.

OptionUTME (with Use of English)O’level credits UNN names
Education and EnglishLiterature in English plus two Arts or Social Science subjectsEnglish Language and Literature in English, both compulsory
Education and HistoryHistory plus two Arts or Social Science subjectsHistory or Government
Education and ReligionChristian or Islamic Religious Studies plus two Arts or Social Science subjectsThe religious studies subject (inferred from UNN’s “subject to be combined” rule)
Education and FrenchFrench plus two Arts or Social Science subjectsFrench
Education and Igbo/LinguisticsIgbo plus two Arts or Social Science subjectsIgbo
Education Music, Fine Arts, Creative ArtsAny three subjectsThe subject itself, plus five credits at one sitting or six at two sittings, including English

The UTME subject named for English, History, Religion, French and Igbo follows UNN’s “subject to be combined” remark; JAMB’s own e-brochure is the final word, so confirm the exact list for your option on the JAMB portal before you pay for registration. The brochure’s general Education Arts rule also lists Mathematics among the five O’level credits. UNN’s remark does not mention it, but I would not apply without a Mathematics credit, because UNN treats English and Mathematics as general entry requirements for most degrees.

A quick O’level check before you apply

  • English Language: credit (C6 or better), and for Education and English, a credit in Literature in English too.
  • Mathematics: credit.
  • Your teaching subject (History or Government, CRS or IRS, French, Igbo): credit.
  • Two more credits in Arts or Social Science subjects.
  • No more than two sittings for most options, and names on WAEC or NECO must match your JAMB record.

Direct Entry into Education Arts

UNN’s remark accepts an NCE in the subject to be combined with Education, with at least a merit pass in that subject, together with the O’level requirements. Holders of an ND in other fields, at merit or better, may be admitted into the four-year programme if they meet the university’s minimum requirements, including a credit in the subject to be combined. A’level holders need two passes in relevant subjects. Direct Entry candidates who chose UNN first still register for UNN’s screening.

UNN screening for 2027/2028: what Education Arts candidates had to do

UNN did not run a written post-UTME test for 2026/2027. The Registrar’s notice of 13 July 2026 described an online screening registration only, with no test date and no exam format. If a website is selling you “UNN post-UTME past questions for 2026/2027” as preparation for Education Arts, know that the official notice did not mention any paper.

The portal route was unn.edu.ng, then UNN Portal at the top right (unnportal.unn.edu.ng), then Prospective Students and the 2026/2027 screening form. You entered your JAMB registration number, generated and paid the invoice, came back to fill personal and O’level details (including centre and exam numbers), uploaded your documents, reviewed, submitted and printed the acknowledgement slip. The notice warned that date of birth cannot be changed after submission.

The window is closed. If you did not register by 5 August 2026, UNN cannot consider you for 2026/2027, whatever your score.

How UNN ranks Education Arts candidates (aggregate example)

UNN has not published its aggregate formula. Neither the 2026/2027 screening notice nor the 2025/2026 advert notice gives weights or grade points. The 2025/2026 advert notice did refer to a separate screening score with a 160 threshold, but it did not say how that score is worked out.

Several Nigerian education blogs describe the same method, and it is the one you will see most often: 60% of your UTME score plus 40% of an O’level score built from four relevant subjects, where A1 = 100, B2 = 90, B3 = 80, C4 = 70, C5 = 60 and C6 = 50. Treat the example below as an illustration of that blog method. It is not an official UNN formula.

StepWorking
UTME score200
O’level: English LanguageB3 = 80
O’level: Literature in EnglishB2 = 90
O’level: MathematicsC5 = 60
O’level: CRSC4 = 70
O’level total (out of 400)300
60% of UTME200 × 0.6 = 120
40% of O’level300 × 0.4 = 120
Aggregate (out of 400)120 + 120 = 240

That Education and English candidate reaches 240 out of 400 on the blog method. Look at how much the O’level side is worth: a candidate with 230 in the UTME but C5, C5, C6 and C6 in the same subjects gets 138 + 88 = 226, which is below this candidate’s 240. UNN has not said which four subjects it counts, so the teaching subject and English are the ones I would make sure are strong.

Merit, catchment and ELDS for Education Arts at UNN

UNN is a federal university, so it works under the federal admission guideline that is widely reported as 45% merit, 35% catchment and 20% educationally less developed states (ELDS). UNN has not published its own split for any course, so read that as the national policy rather than a UNN figure.

  • Merit: the top scorers in the course, from any state, fill this list first. It is where the highest cut-off sits.
  • Catchment: UNN has not published its catchment list. It is generally understood to be the South-East states; confirm on JAMB CAPS or with the UNN admissions office before you count on it.
  • ELDS: this is a federal designation. UNN does not publish its own ELDS list, and I would not rely on any blog that names states “for UNN”.
  • State of origin: the state on your JAMB profile is what counts, and UNN asks for an LGA identification letter as proof during screening.

Each Arts Education option fills its own places, and most of the applicants come from the South-East and nearby states. A candidate from the catchment who misses merit still has a fair chance. UNN has not said how many places each option has for 2026/2027.

How competitive are the Education Arts options at UNN?

Education Arts courses are less crowded than the Arts degrees they mirror. Many candidates who apply for English and Literary Studies, History and International Relations, or Religion and Cultural Studies in the Faculty of Arts are later offered the matching Education option. That keeps the competition alive, especially in English.

OptionMy reading of demand (advice, not UNN data)
Education and EnglishHighest of the group; only 3 unfilled places on the 2025/2026 advert list
Education and HistoryModerate
Education and ReligionModerate to low
Education and FrenchLow; few candidates have a French credit
Education and Igbo/LinguisticsLow to moderate

Options with a rare O’level subject, such as French, tend to be easier to enter because so few candidates qualify. If you have a French credit and like the language, that is a genuine advantage.

What score should you aim for in Education Arts at UNN?

My advice (not a UNN figure): for Education and English, aim for 200 or more, and 210 or more if your O’level grades are mostly C5 and C6. For Education and History, Religion, French or Igbo, 185 or more is a reasonable target. A South-East candidate from about 175 with good credits can still hope for catchment in the less popular options.

Your UTME scoreMy reading for Education Arts at UNN
Below 160Not eligible for UNN screening
160 to 174Eligible, but far below UNN’s declared 200 benchmark; plan a backup
175 to 189Possible in History, Religion, French or Igbo, mainly on catchment
190 to 209Competitive in most options; borderline for Education and English
210 and aboveStrong position in any option

Step by step: from JAMB profile to resuming for an Education Arts course at UNN

Warning

JAMB’s 2026 policy gives candidates four weeks to accept an admission offer on CAPS. An offer left unaccepted after that can be withdrawn and given to someone else, so check CAPS every few days once UNN starts releasing lists.

  1. Get or recover your JAMB profile code: text NIN, a space and your 11-digit NIN (for example, NIN 12345678901) to 55019 or 66019 from the phone number linked to your NIN. JAMB replies with your profile code, which you need for registration and other JAMB services.
  2. Make UNN your first choice: UNN screens only candidates who chose it first. If you are planning for 2027, pick UNN and an Education Arts course at registration so you do not pay for a change of institution later.
  3. Upload your O’level to CAPS: your WAEC, NECO or NABTEB result has to show on your JAMB profile. For 2026/2027 UNN asked for the upload to CAPS and the UNN portal by 5 August 2026. A JAMB-accredited CBT centre can do the CAPS upload for you.
  4. Register for UNN screening: when the next notice comes out, fill the form on unnportal.unn.edu.ng, pay through Remita and print your acknowledgement slip.
  5. Check CAPS: log in at efacility.jamb.gov.ng, click Check Admission Status, then Access My CAPS and Admission Status. On a phone, switch your browser to desktop view first.
  6. Accept or reject: read the course name carefully, then click Accept. If you see a Transfer Approval, UNN is offering you a different course, and you must respond to that before anything else.
  7. Print your JAMB admission letter and pay acceptance: after CAPS, pay UNN’s acceptance fee on the UNN portal. Blogs report it as ₦25,000, but I found no official 2026/2027 figure, so confirm the amount on the portal before you pay.
  8. Clearance: follow your faculty’s clearance instructions with your original documents. Nobody can “secure” a place for you on CAPS for money.

UNN’s homepage already carries 2026/2027 notices for its primary admission list, its Direct Entry list and lists for candidates with disabilities and foreign candidates, and Myschool reported on 25 October 2026 that the list is checkable on CAPS. JAMB also told public universities to conclude 2026 admissions by 31 October 2026. Our JAMB CAPS guide explains every status message you may see.

Studying Education Arts at UNN

The Department of Arts Education is in the Faculty of Education on the Nsukka campus. Its history page says the UNN Senate approved an Arts Education sub-department on 9 August 1982, inside the then Department of Educational Foundations. It became independent and functional in 1994, and the Senate upgraded it to a full Department of Arts Education in the 2005/2006 session. The department awards the B.A. (Education), and it lists a core staff strength of 22, including six professors.

The Cultural and Creative Arts programme is newer. The department says it was developed in 2007, verified by the National Universities Commission in 2010, and took its first students in the 2012/2013 session.

What you study

  • Your teaching subject: literature and language for English, Nigerian and world history for History, biblical or Islamic studies and comparative religion for Religion, French language and literature for French.
  • Education courses: curriculum studies, educational technology, comparative education, psychology of learning, measurement and evaluation, and subject teaching methods.
  • Teaching practice: supervised teaching in secondary schools, usually in the later years.
  • Project: a final-year research project in education.

UNN’s department page does not state the length of the degree, but its Direct Entry remark sends ND holders into “the four-year programme”, which points to four years for UTME entrants. The exact course list is on the department’s pages; confirm the current outline when you resume.

Careers after Education Arts

Most graduates teach their subject in secondary schools, and federal unity colleges, state teaching services and private schools all recruit B.A. (Ed.) holders. Other paths include curriculum development, educational publishing, school administration, examination bodies, translation and interpreting (for French graduates), and further study towards lecturing. To teach in Nigeria you register with the Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN), which normally includes passing its Professional Qualifying Examination.

Related UNN courses: UNN English and Literary Studies, UNN History and International Relations, UNN Religion and Cultural Studies and UNN Foreign Languages and Literary Studies. If you want a teaching degree outside the Arts, see UNN Library and Information Science.

Common mistakes Education Arts applicants make

  • No Literature credit for Education and English: UNN makes it compulsory alongside English Language.
  • Writing the wrong UTME subject: your teaching subject has to be one of your UTME subjects for most options.
  • Choosing UNN second: UNN screens first-choice candidates only.
  • Late O’level upload: without your result on CAPS, UNN cannot process your admission.
  • Treating 160 as the target: it only gets you into screening, and Education and English fills fast.

UNN cut off mark for Education Arts: frequently asked questions

Is 190 enough for Education and English in UNN? It clears the 160 screening minimum but is below UNN’s declared 200 benchmark, and Education and English had only 3 unfilled places on the 2025/2026 advert list. It can work on catchment with strong English and Literature credits; 200 or more is safer.

Is Literature compulsory for Education English in UNN? Yes. UNN’s remark in the JAMB brochure makes credits in both English Language and Literature in English compulsory for Education and English.

Can I study Education History in UNN with Government instead of History? For O’level, UNN accepts a credit in History or Government. Check JAMB’s e-brochure for whether History must be one of your UTME subjects.

Can I use awaiting result for UNN Education Arts? No. UNN’s 2026/2027 notice said candidates awaiting results were not eligible; results had to be out and uploaded by 5 August 2026.
