UNN Cut-Off Mark for Civil Engineering 2027/2028: Requirements, Aggregate and Screening

UNN Cut-Off Mark for Civil Engineering 2027/2028: Requirements, Aggregate and Screening
The UNN cut off mark for Civil Engineering 2026/2027 starts at 160 to apply, with no official departmental figure. See subjects, O’level rules, a worked aggregate and the score to aim for.

The UNN cut off mark for Civil Engineering in 2026/2027 starts at 160. That is the lowest UTME score the University of Nigeria, Nsukka accepted for its 2026/2027 screening, and it applies to every course, Civil Engineering included, as long as UNN was your first choice. UNN has not published a separate departmental cut-off for Civil Engineering for 2026/2027 or 2025/2026, so any site quoting an “official” Civil Engineering figure is guessing.

2027/2028 update: UNN cut-off marks usually stay the same from one year to the next, so the figures on this page are what 2027/2028 candidates should plan with. They come from the latest official notice (2026/2027). If the 2027/2028 notice changes anything, we will update this page.

There is a second number you should know. At the JAMB 2026 policy meeting on 11 May 2026, UNN’s declared minimum was reported as 200. UNN accepts screening applications from 160, but its declared benchmark at that meeting was 200, and competitive courses admit far above both. Civil Engineering is one of the busiest engineering courses at Nsukka, so my advice is to treat 250 and above in the UTME as your safe target. The rest of this guide covers the subjects, the O’level rules, how screening works, a worked aggregate and the CAPS steps.

Keep the two types of number apart. A general cut-off (160 at UNN this year) decides whether you may apply at all. A departmental cut-off is the lowest score that actually got admitted into one course in one year. It depends on how many people applied and how well they did, and UNN has not released one for Civil Engineering in recent sessions.

Deadline warning

UNN’s 2026/2027 screening closed at midnight on 5 August 2026, and JAMB set 31 October 2026 as the last day for public universities to conclude admissions. If UNN offers you a place on CAPS, you have four weeks to accept it or you risk losing it.

Civil Engineering cut-off history at UNN

The table only holds figures that trace to a UNN notice or a named news report. I have added the one widely shared blog range so you can recognise it, but it is not a UNN number and the blog that published it says it is an estimate based on trends, without saying whether it means UTME score or aggregate.

SessionFigureWhat it is
2026/2027160UNN screening minimum, all courses (official)
2026/2027200UNN benchmark declared at JAMB policy meeting (news report)
2025/2026160UNN screening and advert minimum, all courses (UNN notice, as reprinted)
2025/2026 and 2026/2027Not publishedDepartmental cut-off for Civil Engineering
2025/2026250 to 265Unofficial blog estimate only; not a UNN figure

The general cut-off has sat at 160 for two sessions in a row. Departmental cut-offs, where universities publish them, move every year with the size and strength of the applicant pool, so a past figure is a guide to competition, never a promise for this year.

UTME subject combination and O’level requirements for UNN Civil Engineering

Civil Engineering at UNN is a five-year B.Eng. programme in the Faculty of Engineering on the Nsukka campus. The JAMB brochure entry, as reprinted by Myschool, includes a UNN-specific remark, which is what the table follows.

RequirementWhat UNN asks for
UTME subjectsUse of English, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry
O’levelFive credits including English Language, Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry, plus one other science subject
Number of sittingsNot more than two
Direct EntryA’level passes in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics, plus UTME requirements (A’level results verified on NIPEDS)
Minimum age16 by 30 September 2026
CampusNsukka

For the fifth O’level credit, the general brochure accepts any other science subject. Biology, Further Mathematics, Technical Drawing and Agricultural Science are the usual choices. Confirm the current wording on JAMB’s e-brochure before you register, because brochure remarks change between editions.

Two points catch Civil Engineering applicants every year. First, a pass (D7 or E8) in English or Mathematics ends your chances, however high your UTME. Second, the names on your WAEC or NECO result must match your JAMB name; UNN’s 2026/2027 notice says so directly.

How UNN screening and the aggregate work for Civil Engineering

UNN does not publish the formula it uses to rank candidates, and its 2026/2027 notice describes an online registration with no written test, test date or test format. So any aggregate you see online for Civil Engineering, including the one below, is a reconstruction.

The method most often reported by Nigerian education blogs gives UTME 60% and O’level 40%. Your four core O’level grades are converted to points (A1 = 100, B2 = 90, B3 = 80, C4 = 70, C5 = 60, C6 = 50) and added up, so the O’level part is out of 400, the same scale as JAMB. The final figure is UTME x 0.6 plus O’level points x 0.4. This is a commonly used blog method, not an official UNN formula. Use it only to compare yourself with other applicants.

Worked example for a Civil Engineering candidate

Take Chiamaka, who scored 262 in the 2026 UTME with English, Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry. Her WAEC grades in the four core subjects were English B3, Mathematics A1, Physics B2 and Chemistry B3.

StepWorkingResult
O’level points80 (B3) + 100 (A1) + 90 (B2) + 80 (B3)350
UTME share262 x 0.6157.2
O’level share350 x 0.4140
Aggregate (blog method)157.2 + 140297.2 out of 400

Now compare a candidate with 262 in JAMB but C5 in English, C6 in Chemistry, B3 in Mathematics and C4 in Physics. The O’level points fall to 60 + 50 + 80 + 70 = 260, which is 104 after weighting, and the aggregate drops to 261.2. Same UTME, 36 points lower. If the reported method is close to what UNN does, good O’level grades in the four core subjects carry real weight for Civil Engineering.

Admission odds: what score to aim for in Civil Engineering

Civil Engineering draws applicants who want a professional course that leads to COREN registration, and UNN’s programme is one of the oldest in the country. Expect strong competition, especially in the merit slots.

Federal universities fill places using the national admission guideline, which is widely reported as 45% on merit, 35% for catchment states and 20% for educationally less developed states (ELDS). UNN has not published its own split, its catchment list or an ELDS list. UNN’s catchment is generally understood to be the South-East states; confirm on JAMB CAPS or with the UNN admissions office before you rely on it.

In practice, the merit slots go first to the highest scores in the whole applicant pool for the course, whatever their state. The catchment and ELDS slots then let candidates from those states in with somewhat lower scores. Your state of origin on your JAMB profile is the one that counts.

Safe target score (advice, not an official figure)

Your 2026 UTMEMy reading for Civil Engineering at UNN
160 to 199Eligible to apply, but very unlikely for Civil Engineering. Plan a second option.
200 to 229Possible only with excellent O’level grades or a catchment/ELDS advantage
230 to 249In the running; strong O’level grades matter a lot
250 and aboveA comfortable target for most candidates

These bands are my judgement from how competitive the course is and how engineering courses at older federal universities usually fill. They are not UNN figures. If you are below 230, think about which related course you would accept if UNN offers you a change on CAPS.

How to apply to UNN for Civil Engineering: step by step

  1. Get your JAMB profile code: before UTME registration, text NIN, a space and your 11-digit NIN (for example, NIN 12345678901) to 55019 or 66019 from the phone line linked to your NIN. JAMB replies with a 10-character profile code that you take to a CBT centre.
  2. Choose UNN as first choice and Civil Engineering as the course: UNN only screened 2026 candidates who picked it as first choice. Use the exact course name shown on the JAMB e-brochure.
  3. Upload your O’level to CAPS: UNN asked candidates to put their WAEC or NECO results on JAMB CAPS and on the UNN portal by 5 August 2026. You can do the CAPS upload at a JAMB office or accredited CBT centre. Awaiting results were not accepted.
  4. Register on the UNN portal: go to unn.edu.ng, click UNN Portal (unnportal.unn.edu.ng), then Prospective Students and the 2026/2027 screening form. Enter your JAMB registration number, generate the invoice and pay N5,300 on Remita at any commercial bank.
  5. Complete the form: come back, enter your JAMB number again, fill your personal details and O’level centre and exam numbers, and upload each document under 100KB: birth certificate, LGA identification, testimonial, First School Leaving Certificate, JAMB result slip and your O’level result (two if you used two sittings). Check your date of birth before you submit, because UNN does not let you change it later. Print the acknowledgement slip.
  6. Check and accept on CAPS: log in at efacility.jamb.gov.ng, click Check Admission Status, then Access my CAPS and Admission Status. Accept the offer if the course is right, then print your JAMB admission letter.
  7. Pay UNN’s acceptance fee: blogs report it as N25,000, but UNN has not published the 2026/2027 amount in any notice I could open. Pay only through the UNN portal, then follow the clearance instructions.

If anything looks wrong on CAPS, such as missing O’level results or the wrong course, sort it out at a JAMB office before you accept. Our JAMB CAPS guide explains each status you might see.

What you study in Civil Engineering at UNN

Civil Engineering at UNN began in the 1961/62 session, the same period as the Faculty of Engineering itself, which UNN describes as the first engineering faculty in a Nigerian university. The degree was a B.Sc. until 1979/80, when the University Senate approved the switch to a B.Eng.

The department’s own page says the current programme carries 391 credit hours over five years and gives more weight to core Civil Engineering courses from 300 level. Recent changes to the curriculum added computer programming, entrepreneurship, Water Resources and Environmental Engineering, and the Students Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES). The department also says a revised programme is with the Senate committee for approval, so expect some course titles to change.

  • 100 and 200 level: mathematics, physics, chemistry, general studies and the engineering foundation courses shared across the faculty
  • 300 and 400 level: structures, soil and foundation work, hydraulics and water resources, surveying and transport, plus SIWES placement
  • 500 level: design courses, electives and a final-year project

The level breakdown above follows the standard Nigerian B.Eng. pattern. Check the department’s course modules page for UNN’s exact course codes once you are admitted.

Accreditation

The department says its programme got full accreditation in the 2005 NUC exercise. In the COREN accreditation visit to UNN from 27 May 2018, the visiting team scored Civil Engineering 74.5% and recommended full accreditation. The report itself says the final verdict rests with the Council, so treat it as a recommendation.

Careers after Civil Engineering

Graduates go into structural and highway design, construction site management, water supply and sanitation projects, consulting firms, government works ministries and agencies, and postgraduate study. To practise as an engineer in Nigeria you register with COREN after the required years of supervised experience.

If Civil Engineering looks out of reach, compare the other Nsukka engineering courses: Mechanical Engineering, Agricultural and Bioresources Engineering and Metallurgical and Materials Engineering take the same UTME subjects. Outside engineering, Geoinformatics and Surveying is the closest fit for someone who likes site work.

Common mistakes Civil Engineering applicants make

  • Reading 160 as a safe score: it only lets you apply. Admission into Civil Engineering goes well above it.
  • Trusting a blog’s departmental list: no official 2026/2027 Civil Engineering cut-off exists. Lists claiming one cite no UNN document.
  • Writing Biology instead of Chemistry in the UTME: Civil Engineering needs Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry with English.
  • Waiting for NECO or GCE results: UNN’s notice excluded candidates awaiting results.
  • Ignoring CAPS: an offer you don’t accept within four weeks can be lost.
  • Paying “admission agents”: no one outside the UNN portal and JAMB CAPS can sell you a place.

Frequently asked questions

Is 230 enough for Civil Engineering in UNN?

It clears UNN’s 160 screening minimum and the 200 benchmark, so you can be considered. Whether it is enough depends on your O’level grades, your state and the year’s pool; 250 or more is the safer target.

What is the UNN departmental cut off mark for Civil Engineering 2027/2028?

UNN has not published one. The official figure is 160 to apply for screening, with 200 reported as UNN’s declared benchmark at the JAMB policy meeting.

Can I use awaiting result for UNN Civil Engineering?

No. UNN’s 2026/2027 screening notice said candidates awaiting NECO or GCE results were not eligible, and results had to be on CAPS by 5 August 2026.

Does UNN write post-UTME for Civil Engineering?

For 2026/2027, UNN’s notice describes online screening registration with document uploads and no written test. If UNN announces a test in a future session, it will appear on unn.edu.ng.
